Abstract

Mutations affecting the DNA-binding region of the T-box gene TBX3 have been associated with ulnar-mammary syndrome (UMS). In a study of 75 individuals with UMS from 10 families, the TBX3 mutations have been characterized, and half of the mutations are found downstream of the area where the T-box domain is encoded. No apparent phenotypic differences were observed between missense mutations and deletion or frameshifts.

Abstract

An active bracing system has been designed, fabricated, and installed in a full-scale dedicated test structure in Tokyo, Japan, for structural-response control under seismic loads. In 1991, Soong et al. presented the design of the system along with simulation studies for the design earthquake. Presented in this paper, which is the second part of the sequence, are: (1) The description of the constructed system; and (2) the observed performance of the system under two actual earthquakes and other artificial loadings. Installation details of the system in the building structure are presented along with the selections for fail-safe shutdown operations in case of malfunctions. Also presented are the procedures for proper maintenance and self-testing, which ensure continuous control with minimal resources. The observed performance under artificial loadings and actual ground motions is compared with the estimated analytical response.

31. Induction of urea cycle enzymes of rat liver by glucagon.

Abstract

All five urea cycle enzymes of rat liver increased in activity 48 h after subcutaneous administration of crystalline zinc glucagon to male rats and remained elevated after 7 days of continuous glucagon infusion. The maximum ratios of enzyme activities over those of controls were 2.0 for carbamyl phosphate synthetase, 1.3 for ornithine transcarbamylase, 2.7 for argininosuccinate synthetase, 3.2 for argininosuccinase, and 2.2 for arginase. Actinomycin D or puromycin prevented these responses to glucagon. The increase in arginase activity after zinc glucagon treatment was matched by an increase in immunoprecipitable enzyme. All five enzymes were induced by physiological plasma levels of glucagon. Tube feeding of casein hydrolysate for 2 days increased all five enzyme activities 1.5- to 2.2-fold and resulted in plasma glucagon levels similar to those required for induction by exogenous glucagon. Thus, glucagon is an inducer of the entire urea cycle in rat liver and plays a role in the induction of the cycle by protein feeding.
