Tropical and subtropical evergreen broadleaved forests (TEFs) contribute more than one‐third of terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP). However, the continental‐scale leaf phenology‐photosynthesis nexus over TEFs is still poorly understood to date. This knowledge gap hinders most light use efficiency (LUE) models from accurately simulating the GPP seasonality in TEFs. Leaf age is the crucial plant trait to link the dynamics of leaf phenology with GPP seasonality. Thus, here we incorporated the seasonal leaf area index of different leaf age cohorts into a widely used LUE model (i.e., EC‐LUE) and proposed a novel leaf age‐dependent LUE model (denoted as LA‐LUE model). At the site level, the LA‐LUE model (average R2 =.59, average root‐mean‐square error [RMSE] = 1.23 gC m−2 day−1) performs better than the EC‐LUE model in simulating the GPP seasonality across the nine TEFs sites (average R2 =.18; average RMSE = 1.87 gC m−2 day−1). At the continental scale, the monthly GPP estimates from the LA‐LUE model are consistent with FLUXCOM GPP data (R2 =.80; average RMSE = 1.74 gC m−2 day−1), and satellite‐based GPP data retrieved from the global Orbiting Carbon Observatory‐2 (OCO‐2) based solar‐induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) product (GOSIF) (R2 =.64; average RMSE = 1.90 gC m−2 day−1) and the reconstructed TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument SIF dataset using machine learning algorithms (RTSIF) (R2 =.78; average RMSE = 1.88 gC m−2 day−1). Typically, the estimated monthly GPP not only successfully represents the unimodal GPP seasonality near the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, but also captures well the bimodal GPP seasonality near the Equator. Overall, this study for the first time integrates the leaf age information into the satellite‐based LUE model and provides a feasible implementation for mapping the continental‐scale GPP seasonality over the entire TEFs. Central African evergreen broadleaved forests around the equator exhibit a double annual cycle for canopy phenology and carbon uptake seasonality. The underlying drivers of this behavior are poorly understood and the double seasonality is not captured by land surface models (LSM). In this study, we developed a new leaf phenology module into the ORCHIDEE LSM (hereafter ORCHIDEE‐AFP), which utilizes short‐wave incoming radiation (SWd) as the main driver of leaf shedding and partial rejuvenation of the canopy, to simulate the double seasonality of central African forests. The ORCHIDEE‐AFP model has been evaluated by using field data from two forest sites and satellite observations of the enhanced vegetation index (EVI), which is a proxy of young leaf area index (LAIYoung) with leafage less than 6 months, as well as six products of GPP or GPP proxies. Results demonstrate that ORCHIDEE‐AFP successfully reproduces observed leaf turnover (R = 0.45) and young leaf abundance (R = 0.74), and greatly improve the representation of the bimodal leaf phenology. The proportion of grid cells with a significant positive correlation between the seasonality of modeled LAIYoung and observed EVI increased from 0.2% in the standard model to 27% in the new model. For photosynthesis, the proportions of grid cells with significant positive correlations between modeled and observed seasonality range from 26% to 65% across the six GPP evaluation products. The improved performance of the ORCHIDEE‐AFP model in simulating leaf phenology and photosynthesis of central African forests will allow a more accurate assessment of the impacts of climate change in tropical forests. Plain Language Summary: Evergreen broadleaved forests in central Africa near the equator have a unique behavior where their leaf growth and ability to take in carbon peak twice a year. However, the reason underlying this behavior is not well understood, and the current process‐oriented terrestrial biosphere models can not represent this double peak. In this study, we integrated a new module, which uses sunlight as the main factor for when leaves fall and new ones grow in the forest, into a popular process‐oriented terrestrial biosphere model called ORCHIDEE, to simulate this unique behavior in central African forests (hereafter ORCHIDEE‐AFP). We tested our model using real‐world data from the forests acquired at the site level and satellite images. The results show that our new model can successfully simulate when leaves change and how much carbon the forests take in. The new model demonstrates better performance than the standard model. Our improved model will be useful for predicting the future of these forests more accurately under climate change. Interannual variability of the terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink is substantially regulated by various environmental variables and highly dominates the interannual variation of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations. Thus, it is necessary to determine dominating factors affecting the interannual variability of the carbon sink to improve our capability of predicting future terrestrial carbon sinks. Using global datasets derived from machine-learning methods and process-based ecosystem models, this study reveals that the interannual variability of the atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD) was significantly negatively correlated with net ecosystem production (NEP) and substantially impacted the interannual variability of the atmospheric CO2 growth rate (CGR). Further analyses found widespread constraints of VPD interannual variability on terrestrial gross primary production (GPP), causing VPD to impact NEP and CGR. Partial correlation analysis confirms the persistent and widespread impacts of VPD on terrestrial carbon sinks compared to other environmental variables. Current Earth system models underestimate the interannual variability in VPD and its impacts on GPP and NEP.
