Purpose – This paper aims to examine the influence of the interplay between servant leadership behaviors and Machiavellianism on leader effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach – Drawing on trait activation theory and motivation to lead theory, the authors hypothesize that the effect of servant leadership behaviors on perceived leadership effectiveness is manifested differently in teams with high-Machiavellian vs. low-Machiavellian leaders. In teams with low-Machiavellian leaders, servant leadership behaviors are expected to be associated with a cooperative way of handling team conflicts, which enhances employees' leader effectiveness ratings. In contrast, in teams with high-Machiavellian leaders, this mediation role vanishes due to the incongruency between Machiavellian traits and the cooperative context. The authors conducted a two-wave survey-based study and tested the hypotheses with a matched supervisor-employee sample from 310 employees and their leaders in 91 teams. Findings – The results showed that servant leadership behaviors positively impact leadership effectiveness and that this effect takes place through cooperative team conflict management (TCM) without controlling for leaders' Machiavellian trait. Further analysis shows this mediation mechanism is only strong and significant in teams led by low-Machiavellian leaders, but not high-Machiavellian leaders. Current research on maize germination suffers from long sampling intervals, and the relationship between the starch structure and the processing properties of flour in maize is still unclear. This study observed the effect of germination on the structure and composition of maize starch and the processing properties of maize flour over a 72 h period using a short interval sampling method. At 36 h, the short-range ordered structure, crystallinity, and enthalpy of starch reached the highest values of 1.02, 34.30%, and 9.90 J/g, respectively. At 72 h, the ratios of rapidly-digested starch (RDS) and slowly-digested starch (SDS) enhanced to 29.37% and 28.97%; the RS content reduced to 35.37%; and the flow properties of the starch were improved. This study enhances the understanding of the effects of germination on the processing properties of maize starch and flour, determines the appropriate application, and recommends the use of germination in the food industry.

Corn husk, a by-product of corn starch production and processing, contains high-quality dietary fiber (DF). Our study compares and analyzes the impact of Hericium erinaceus solid-state fermentation (SSF) on the structure and physicochemical characteristics of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) of corn husks. The study also investigates the kinetics of SSF of H. erinaceus in this process. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) results revealed significant structural changes in corn husk SDF before and after fermentation, with a significant elevation in the functional group numbers. The data indicate that the fermented corn husk SDF’s water-holding, swelling, and oil-holding capacities increased to 1.57, 1.95, and 1.80 times those of the pre-fermentation SDF, respectively. Additionally, the results suggest that changes in extracellular enzyme activity and nutrient composition during SSF of H. erinaceus are closely associated with the mycelium growth stage, with a mutual promotion or inhibition relationship between the two. Our study offers a foundation for corn husk SDF fermentation and is relevant to the bioconversion of maize processing by-products.

ObjectiveCancer burden can be reduced when the population's knowledge of cancer prevention and control measures is increased. However, current epidemiological research investigating cancer prevention and control knowledge in China is limited. This study aimed to examine the core knowledge levels of cancer prevention and control measures as well as its influencing factors among adults in Fujian, China.Study designA cross-sectional study.MethodsFrom September to December 2021, a total of 2,440 Chinese urban and rural adults from Fujian Province, located in Southeastern China, were randomly selected for this cross-sectional study. The probability proportionate approach to sampling was used. A 38-item questionnaire that covered demographics and basic knowledge of cancer, including concepts, screening, therapy, and rehabilitation-related key points was used to measure knowledge levels of cancer prevention and control measures among 2,074 participants. The level of each participants' core knowledge of cancer prevention and control measures was defined as a rate calculated by the number of correct answers divided by the total number of questions. The binary logistic regression model was used to determine if influencing factors were associated with core knowledge awareness.ResultsIn total, 1,290 participants (62.2%) were in the low knowledge group and 784 (37.8%) were in the high knowledge group. The average knowledge rate of cancer prevention and control measures among all participants was 56.01%. Participants from urban areas, who held white-collar jobs, were married, had a bachelor's degree or above, had a family history of cancer, or self-rated their health level as good or average were associated with higher rates of cancer prevention and control core knowledge (overall p < 0.05).ConclusionThese findings may assist healthcare providers and/or researchers in designing effective primary preventive interventions to enhance the general population's cancer prevention and control knowledge, and subsequently decrease the cancer burden in China.

With the rapid depletion of shallow mineral resources, an increasing number of mines are stepping into deep mining to ensure resource continuity, which generally forms a coordinated production model that includes both existing shallow production systems and new deep projects. Given the complex production patterns of both multi-mining areas and multi-sections formed during the process of deep mining, how to achieve geological resource continuity, stable production capacity, balanced supply grade, and sustainable economic benefits are the key issue to be addressed in the mining scheme during the transition to deep-area. When an underground mine transitions to deep mining, it is necessary to steadily advance the production task and maintain the steady growth of metal quantity and economic benefit. Therefore, to maintain production continuity and stability, it is necessary to optimize the production plan for underground metal mines. Considering the situation of multi-section mining submontanely, the Sanshandao gold mine is used as a case study to investigate the complex production layout of multi-section mining simultaneously subjected to constraints of production capacity balance, grade requirements, and other production system capacities through in-depth analysis of the production capacity continuity in the process of mining transition to deep mineral resources. An optimization model is constructed aiming at maximizing the comprehensive resource exploitation value of multi-section mining. A mathematical planning model for the continuation and optimal allocation of production capacity during the transition period of deep mining is constructed with the optimization goal of maximizing the comprehensive exploitation return of resources from multiple mining areas, taking the constraints of overall capacity succession, balanced output grade, and capacity limits of each mining area into account. Following the solution of the Sanshandao gold mine’s production capacity, succession during the transition to deep-area is obtained. The model considers the coordination and succession of multiple mining areas and sections in terms of time and space, and it achieves a smooth production system transition from shallow to deep areas through accurate evaluation of existing operation conditions and optimal allocation of production factors, all while ensuring the production tasks and economic efficiency targets are met. The optimization model is programmed in Python, and it is solved using the Gurobi software. The results show that the best capacity continuation and production task allocation schemes are obtained to effectively ensure benefit improvement as well as production capacity balance and stability. The example application validates the scientific and efficacy of the optimization model, which can be used by other mines to optimize production plans when switching to deep mining.
