Red yeast rice (RYR) effectively improved the lipid profile; however, the effects of RYR on the risk of incident liver cirrhosis remain to be elucidated. We aimed to evaluate the beneficial effects of RYR use on the risk and outcome of liver cirrhosis.Patients and methods: We identified 156,587 adults who had newly diagnosed hyperlipidemia in 2010– 2016 from health insurance data in this retrospective cohort study. Using propensity score matching, we selected 34,367 patients who used RYR and 34,367 patients who used lovastatin. Events of incident liver cirrhosis that occurred in the two cohorts during the follow-up period of 2010– 2019 were identified. We calculated adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (Cis) for liver cirrhosis risk associated with RYR use in the multiple Cox proportional hazard model.Results: Compared with patients who used lovastatin, patients who used RYR had a decreased risk of liver cirrhosis (HR 0.60, 95% CI 0.57– 0.63), and this association was significant in various subgroups. A biological gradient relationship between the frequency of RYR use and decreased liver cirrhosis was observed (p for trend < 0.0001). Reduced postcirrhosis jaundice (HR 0.56, 95% CI 0.43– 0.72), ascites (HR 0.37, 95% CI 0.28– 0.50), hepatic coma (HR 0.36, 95% CI 0.26– 0.50), and mortality (HR 0.48, 95% CI 0.38– 0.61) were also associated with RYR use.Conclusion: We demonstrated the beneficial effects of RYR use on the risk and outcome of liver cirrhosis; however, the lack of compliance data should be considered. Methods: Fifteen patients were divided into two groups: patients in the control group (n=6) received minimal acupuncture (MA), and those in the experimental group (n=9) received EA. Four acupoints, which include Neiguan (PC6), Shaohai (HT3), Zeqian (Ex-UE, A32), and Shounizhu (EX-UE), were treated near the motor points of the muscles for elbow flexion, forearm pronation, and finger flexion. Both groups were treated for twelve sessions, 20 minutes per session, for 6 weeks (two sessions per week). The outcome measures in this study included angle of muscle reaction (R1), passive range of motion (R2), and dynamic component (R2–R1). Ear acupuncture stimulation has been used for body weight reduction as early as the 1970s. Several hypotheses have been proposed in literature regarding its mechanism of action, among which are the effects of the stimulation of the hypothalamic satiety center on decreased neuropeptide Y production. Here, we present another possible mechanism to account for the temporary and short-term effects of ear acupuncture stimulation in the treatment of obesity, the sympathetic effects of the autonomic nervous system. 14 female volunteers underwent a randomized clinical trial of the ear acupuncture stimulation. A prospective, sham-point control, crossover study was performed with two sequential four-week stimulation periods separated by a two-week washout interval. The clinical features of and effects on the autonomic nervous system were recorded and analyzed. Decreased body weight was observed in both the experimental and the control groups in the first 4 weeks of stimulation. Sympathomimetic effects were also noted in both groups. Whereas the sympathomimetic effects and body weight reduction were sustained in the experimental group in the second 4 weeks of stimulation, such effects were not observed in the control group. Some sympathomimetic effects were noted in both the experimental and the control groups initially. This effect remained apparent in the experimental group in sequential stimulation but was lost in the control group. Consequently, we believe that sympathomimetic effects may account for the reduction in body weight by temporarily increasing basal metabolic rate and decreasing appetite, but the body may regain weight after the termination of such effects. Accordingly, the combination of an optimal exercise and diet program with repeated acupoint therapy may be necessary to maintain a healthy body weight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Developing effective methods for helping athletes recover from muscle fatigue is deemed essential, particularly on the eves' important competitions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of acupuncture stimulation on athletes' recovery abilities. Subjects were selected from 30 male elite university basketball players who were randomly assigned to 3 groups: acupuncture group, sham group, and normal (control) group, each containing 10 subjects. Acupuncture was carried out on each athlete in acupuncture group at the Neiguan (PC6) and Zusanli (ST36) acupoints, beginning at 15 min prior to exercise and continuing until exhaustion of the subject. Similar acupuncture was also carried out on each athlete in the sham group but the positions were 1 cm away from the PC6 and ST36 acupoints. No acupuncture was conducted on the athletes in the normal group. During the experiments, each subject performed separate runs on the treadmill. The data of heart rate (HR(max)), oxygen consumption (VO(2max)), and blood lactic acid were measured during the rest period and at 3 recovery points of time (5th, 30th and 60th min) post-exercise. The results showed that the acupuncture group (PC6 and ST36) has significantly lower HR(max), VO(2max) and blood lactic acid than both the sham and normal groups at the 30th min post-exercise. Blood lactic acid of the acupuncture group was also significantly lower than that of the other two groups in the 60th min post-exercise. Our findings have shed some light on the development of effective acupuncture schemes to enhance the recovery ability for elite basketball athletes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acupuncture treatment has been accepted worldwide. Many clinical trials have been conducted especially in analgesia. The present review includes almost all the important trials since 1970. Among all the pain conditions, postoperative pain, lower back pain, osteoarthritis of the knee and chronic headache are the most popular topics. We found that there are diverse conclusions in each condition; however, most trials agree that acupuncture is an effective therapeutic strategy for analgesia. As with regard to the placebo effect, there is no consensus. In chronic headache treatment, the placebo effect of acupuncture seems to be large. However, in osteoarthritis, the placebo effect is minimal. Another issue is the non-specific physiologic response to piercing the skin. We believe that this effect produces analgesia in some heterogeneous syndrome such as lower back pain. However, this effect is not superior to the specific therapeutic effect of acupuncture based on TCM theory in all the pain conditions reviewed here. We also notice that the design of the sham acupuncture or the placebo has great impact on the result. Rigorous design can minimize the non-specific and placebo effects of acupuncture. Therefore, the real effect of acupuncture can be investigated well. We conclude that acupuncture is a proven treatment for relieving pain. Panax Notoginseng Burk (PN) has been reported to improve blood circulation, as well as learning and memory functions. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of PN on learning and memory functions in chronic cerebral infarct rats. A cerebral infarct animal model was established by blocking the blood flow of both common carotid arteries and right middle cerebral artery for 90 min followed by reperfusion for 4 weeks. PN (0.5 g/kg) was administered orally 3 days per week for 4 weeks, whereas the control group provided bait and water only. The learning and memory functions were estimated by measuring how successful rats were able to negotiate an 8-arm radial maze test; the test was performed after operation once a week for 4 weeks. Finally, the rats were sacrificed and their brains were removed. The brains were sectioned and analyzed for ED1, glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP), nuclear factor-kappaB, and brain derivative neurotrophin factor (BDNF) and beta-secretase by immunostaining. Cerebral infarct rats given PN were able to successfully navigate the 8-arm radial maze test four weeks after cerebral infarction. PN also increased ED1, BDNF and beta-secretase immunoreactive cells, but did not increase GFAP and NF-kappaB immunoreactive cells. PN attenuated the reduction in learning and memory functions induced by cerebral infarction in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injured rats; it also increased the amount of activated microglia and BDNF. These data suggest that the effect of PN, at least in part, is closely related to the increase in BDNF that was generated by activated microglia. The effect that PN has on astrocytes, NF-kappaB and beta-secreatase immunoreactive cells requires further study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous work from our laboratory has demonstrated that the percentage differences of 2nd (C2) and 3rd (C3) pulse harmonics related to Kidney and Spleen were both increased toward another steady state in rats after acute hemorrhage. Therefore, it is suggested that changes in pulse spectra might represent the ability of animals to survive a model of progressive hemorrhage. In this study, the difference of the pulse spectra patterns between survivors and non-survivors after progressive hemorrhage (by loss of 5%, 10% or 20% of the estimated blood volume) in anesthetized rats is determined. Seven rats, dead within 2 hours after a loss of 20% of the estimated blood volume hemorrhage, were defined as 'non-survivors'. The other eleven rats, more than 2 hours after hemorrhage, were defined as 'survivors'. Pulse waves of arterial blood pressure before and after the hemorrhage were measured in parallel to the pulse spectrum analysis. Data among different phases were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Duncan's test for pairwise comparisons. Differences between survivor and non-survivor groups at each phase were analyzed using Student's t-test. A mixed-effects linear regression model was applied to evaluate the relationship in harmonics, which significantly differed between the two groups. The study results showed that in rats, during progressive hemorrhage, the percentage differences of 2nd harmonic proportion increased significantly; however, the result failed to show any significant difference between survivors and non-survivors. After the third blood withdrawal process, the percentage differences of 3rd harmonic proportion increased more significantly in the survivors. In addition, the percentage differences of 1st harmonic proportion related to the Liver for the survivor group was significantly lower than that of the non-survivors. After analysis with the mixed linear regression model, C3 and C1 demonstrated a linear regression relationship, and there existed significant differences between survivors and non-survivors. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) holds that Blood and Qi are fundamental substances in the human body for sustaining normal vital activity. The theory of Qi, Blood and Zang-Fu contribute the most important theoretical basis of human physiology in TCM. An animal model using conscious rats was employed in this study to further comprehend how organisms survive during acute hemorrhage by maintaining the functionalities of Qi and Blood through dynamically regulating visceral physiological conditions. Pulse waves of arterial blood pressure before and after the hemorrhage were taken in parallel to pulse spectrum analysis. Percentage differences of mean arterial blood pressure and harmonics were recorded in subsequent 5-minute intervals following the hemorrhage. Data were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Duncan's test for pairwise comparisons. Results showed that, within 30 minutes following the onset of acute hemorrhage,the reduction of mean arterial blood pressure was improved from 62% to 20%. Throughout the process, changes to the pulse spectrum appeared to result in a new balance over time. The percentage differences of the second and third harmonics, which were related to kidney and spleen, both increased significantly than baseline and towards another steady state. Apart from the steady state resulting from the previous stage, the percentage difference of the 4th harmonic decreased significantly to another steady state. The observed change could be attributed to the induction of functional Qi, and is a result of Qi-Blood balancing activity that organisms hold to survive against acute bleeding. Two components of garlic, diallyl sulfide (DAS) and diallyl disulfide (DADS), inhibited arylamine N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity and 2-aminofluorene-DNA adduct in human promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL-60). The NAT activity was measured by high performance liquid chromatography assaying for amounts of N-acetyl-2-aminofluorene (2-AAF) and remaining 2-aminofluorene (2-AF). Cellular cytosols and intact cell suspensions were assayed. The inhibition of NAT activity and 2-AF-DNA adduct formation in human leukemia cells by DAS and DADS were dose-dependent and were directly proportional. The data also indicated that DAS and DADS decrease the apparent values of Km and Vmax from human leukemia cells in both assays. This is the first report of garlic components affecting human leukemia cell NAT activity and 2-AF-DNA adduct formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Psychological stress has a significant impact on individuals' quality of life and health. Traditionally, psychological stress assessment relies on self-reported tools such as the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), which are inherently subjective. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of using wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) to assess cortisol and cortisone as biomarkers for psychological stress. We conducted sampling and monitoring of cortisol and cortisone concentrations at both a small-scale campus setting (five weeks) and a large-scale municipal wastewater treatment plant (12 months), calculating the mass loads of these hormones. At the campus level, while the mass load of cortisone was higher during exam weeks compared to regular class weeks, and higher in females than in males, no significant differences were observed in the mass load of cortisol. The mass load results of cortisone were consistent with the findings of the PSS-14 questionnaire. These results suggest that cortisone is a more suitable biomarker for psychological stress assessment. In the large-scale municipal wastewater samples, seasonal variations were observed, with higher levels of cortisol and cortisone in winter compared to summer, likely due to the COVID-19 outbreak in winter and the presence of external pharmaceutical sources. The TRPM8 channel, a temperature-sensitive ion channel, plays a crucial role in various physiological processes, particularly in the modulation of inflammation and nociception. Although electroacupuncture (EA) is a recognized analgesic treatment for pain conditions, its interaction with TRPM8 remains underexplored. This study aims to determine TRPM8's role in EA-induced analgesia using a murine model of inflammatory pain. Mechanical allodynia, evidenced by a reduced paw withdrawal threshold (PWT), was induced in both wild-type and Trpm8 -/- mice through CFA injection. EA applied at the GB34 and LR3 acupoints significantly alleviated mechanical allodynia in both groups. In wild-type mice, the analgesic effects of EA were partially reversed by naloxone (an opioid receptor antagonist) or AM251 (a CB1 receptor antagonist) and fully reversed by their combination. In contrast, only AM251 reversed EA-induced analgesia in Trpm8 -/- or TRPM8-inhibited wild-type mice (via AMTB treatment, a TRPM8 antagonist), indicating no involvement of the opioid pathway. Additionally, the combination of menthol, a partial TRPM8 agonist, and EA enhanced analgesia in wild-type mice. In Trpm8 -/- or AMTB-pretreated mice, the CB1 receptor agonist WIN 55,212-2 (WIN) exhibited stronger analgesic effects compared to wild-type controls. These findings suggest that EA at LR3 and GB34 mediates analgesia through both opioid and endocannabinoid pathways. TRPM8 is critical for EA to activate the opioid pathway, while its inhibition or deletion shifts the analgesic mechanism towards reliance on the cannabinoid system. Understanding this mechanistic shift may help optimize EA treatment strategies and improve pain management outcomes.

Since the onset of COVID-19, respiratory diseases have emerged as a focal concern within the field of public health. This study aims to reveal the prevalence of acute respiratory infectious diseases by screening antipyretic, antiviral, and antibiotic biomarkers through wastewater analysis. Samples were collected over a seven-day period each year in 2022, 2023, and 2024 from a northern city in China, assessing the concentrations of two antipyretics (paracetamol and ibuprofen), one antiviral drug (oseltamivir), eleven antibiotics, and three pathogens (influenza A, influenza B, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae). The usage of most antipyretics and antibiotics was higher in 2023 and 2024, primarily due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2023 and the prevalence of influenza A, influenza B, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae in 2024. The prevalence assessed using antipyretics (2.68 %) and pathogens (2.70 %) demonstrated a high degree of consistency, whereas the prevalence estimated using antibiotics and antiviral drugs was only 0.53 % and 0.36 %, respectively. Antibiotics are generally used to treat a broad spectrum of bacterial infections rather than targeting a specific pathogen, so their presence in wastewater may not directly reflect the prevalence of a particular disease. In contrast, antipyretics and specific pathogens exhibit a stronger correlation, suggesting that they may serve as more reliable biomarkers than antiviral and antibiotic drugs. Background/objectives: Acute kidney injury (AKI) syndrome is distinguished by a quick decline in renal excretory capacity and usually diagnosed by the presence of elevated nitrogen metabolism end products and/or diminished urine output. AKI frequently occurs in hospital patients, and there are no existing specific treatments available to diminish its occurrence or expedite recovery. For an extended period in the food industry, Pediococcus acidilactici has been distinguished by its robust bacteriocin production, effectively inhibiting pathogen growth during fermentation and storage., Methods: In this study, the aim is to assess the effectiveness of P. acidilactici GKA4, dead probiotic GKA4, and postbiotic GKA4 against cisplatin-induced AKI in an animal model. The experimental protocol involves a ten-day oral administration of GKA4, dead probiotic GKA4, and postbiotic GKA4 to mice, with a cisplatin intraperitoneal injection being given on the seventh day to induce AKI., Results: The findings indicated the significant alleviation of the renal histopathological changes and serum biomarkers of GKA4, dead probiotic GKA4, and postbiotic GKA4 in cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. GKA4, dead probiotic GKA4, and postbiotic GKA4 elevated the expression levels of HO-1 and decreased the expression levels of Nrf-2 proteins. In addition, the administration of GKA4, dead probiotic GKA4, and postbiotic GKA4 significantly reduced the expression of apoptosis-related proteins (Bax, Bcl-2, and caspase 3), autophagy-related proteins (LC3B, p62, and Beclin1), and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related proteins (GRP78, PERK, ATF-6, IRE1, CHOP, and Caspase 12) in kidney tissues. Notably, GKA4, dead probiotic GKA4, and postbiotic GKA4 also upregulated the levels of proteins related to organic anion transporters and organic cation transporters., Conclusions: Overall, the potential therapeutic benefits of GKA4, dead probiotic GKA4, and postbiotic GKA4 are significant, particularly after cisplatin treatment. This is achieved by modulating apoptosis, autophagy, ER stress, and transporter proteins to alleviate oxidative stress.

Endothelial senescence, aging-related inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction are prominent features of vascular aging and contribute to the development of aging-associated vascular disease. Accumulating evidence indicates that DNA damage occurs in aging vascular cells, especially in endothelial cells (ECs). However, the mechanism of EC senescence has not been completely elucidated, and so far, there is no specific drug in the clinic to treat EC senescence and vascular aging. Here we show that various aging stimuli induce nuclear DNA and mitochondrial damage in ECs, thus facilitating the release of cytoplasmic free DNA (cfDNA), which activates the DNA-sensing adapter protein STING. STING activation led to a senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), thereby releasing pro-aging cytokines and cfDNA to further exacerbate mitochondrial damage and EC senescence, thus forming a vicious circle, all of which can be suppressed by STING knockdown or inhibition. Using next-generation RNA sequencing, we demonstrate that STING activation stimulates, whereas STING inhibition disrupts pathways associated with cell senescence and SASP. In vivo studies unravel that endothelial-specific Sting deficiency alleviates aging-related endothelial inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction and prevents the development of atherosclerosis in mice. By screening FDA-approved vasoprotective drugs, we identified Cilostazol as a new STING inhibitor that attenuates aging-related endothelial inflammation both in vitro and in vivo. We demonstrated that Cilostazol significantly inhibited STING translocation from the ER to the Golgi apparatus during STING activation by targeting S162 and S243 residues of STING. These results disclose the deleterious effects of a cfDNA-STING-SASP-cfDNA vicious circle on EC senescence and atherogenesis and suggest that the STING pathway is a promising therapeutic target for vascular aging-related diseases. Although diverse microorganisms can remove ammonium and nitrate simultaneously, their metabolic mechanisms are not well understood. Paracoccus denitrificans R-1 showed the maximal NH 4 + removal rate 9.94 mg L -1 ·h -1 and 2.91 mg L -1 ·h -1 under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. Analysis of the nitrogen balance calculation and isotope tracing experiment indicated that NH 4 + was consumed through assimilation. The maximal NO 3 - removal rate of strain R-1 was 18.05 and 19.76 mg L -1 ·h -1 under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. The stoichiometric consumption ratio of acetate to nitrate was 0.902 and NO 3 - was reduced to N 2 for strain R-1 through 15 NO 3 - isotopic tracing experiment, which indicated a respiratory process coupled with the oxidation of electron donors. Genomic analysis showed that strain R-1 contained genes for ammonium assimilation and denitrification, which effectively promoted each other. Deep treatment and bioenergy recovery of swine wastewater (SW) are beneficial for constructing a low-carbon footprint and resource-recycling society. In this study, Fe (III) addition from 0 to 600 mg/L significantly increased the methane (CH 4 ) content of the recovered biogas from 61.4 ± 2.0 to 89.3 ± 2.0 % during SW treatment in an anaerobic membrane digestion system. The specific methane yields (SMY) also increased significantly from 0.20 ± 0.05 to 0.29 ± 0.02 L/g COD. Fe (III) and its bio-transformed products which participated in establishing direct interspecific electron transfer (DIET), upregulated the abundance of e-pili and Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), enriched electroactive bacteria. The increase in cellular adenosine triphosphate (cATP) from 6583 to 14,518 ng/gVSS and electron transport system (ETS) from 1468 to 1968 mg/(g·h) promoted the intensity of energy flow and electron flow during anaerobic digestion of SW. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation has been considered as an environmental-friendly and energy-efficient biological nitrogen removal (BNR) technology. Recently, new reaction pathway for ammonium oxidation under anaerobic condition had been discovered. In addition to nitrite, iron trivalent, sulfate, manganese and electrons from electrode might be potential electron acceptors for ammonium oxidation, which can be coupled to traditional BNR process for wastewater treatment. In this paper, the pathway and mechanism for ammonium oxidation with various electron acceptors under anaerobic condition is studied comprehensively, and the research progress of potentially functional microbes is summarized. The potential application of various electron acceptors for ammonium oxidation in wastewater is addressed, and the N 2 O emission during nitrogen removal is also discussed, which was important greenhouse gas for global climate change. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a global pandemic. Known as COVID-19, it has affected billions of people worldwide, claiming millions of lives and posing a continuing threat to humanity. This is considered one of the most extensive pandemics ever recorded in human history, causing significant losses to both life and economies globally. However, the available evidence is currently insufficient to establish the effectiveness and safety of antiviral drugs or vaccines. The entry of the virus into host cells involves binding to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), a cell surface receptor, via its spike protein. Meanwhile, transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2), a host surface protease, cleaves and activates the virus's S protein, thus promoting viral infection. Plant protease inhibitors play a crucial role in protecting plants against insects and/or microorganisms. The major storage proteins in sweet potato roots include sweet potato trypsin inhibitor (SWTI), which accounts for approximately 60% of the total water-soluble protein and has been found to possess a variety of health-promoting properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, ACE-inhibitory, and anticancer functions. Our study found that SWTI caused a significant reduction in the expression of the ACE2 and TMPRSS2 proteins, without any adverse effects on cells. Therefore, our findings suggest that the ACE2 and TMPRSS2 axis can be targeted via SWTI to potentially inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Background: Both the size of the older population and the use of complementary and alternative medicine are increasing worldwide. This study evaluated the long-term trend in utilization of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and associated factors among older people in Taiwan., Methods: Using the database of population-based interview surveys, we evaluated the one-month prevalence of TCM use among 13,945 older people aged over 65 years from 2001-2017. The sociodemographic status and medical comorbidities of older people who did and did not use TCM were compared by calculating adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in the multiple logistic regressions., Results: The one-month prevalence of TCM use increased from 5.5% in 2001 to 9.1% in 2017 among older people in Taiwan. Overall, 7.3% of older people had used TCM within the previous month. People with a history of heart disease (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.24-2.12), use of folk therapy (OR 3.16, 95% CI 2.00-4.99), and purchase of non-prescribed Chinese herbal medicine (OR 2.08, 95% CI 1.48-2.91) were more likely to use TCM than the comparison group. However, age ≥80 years (OR 0.48, 95% CI 0.31-0.72) and previous hospitalization (OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.41-0.85) were associated with the reduced use of TCM., Conclusion: From 2001-2017, the use of TCM increased in the older population in Taiwan. Liquid digestate of food waste is an ammonium-, ferric- and sulfate-laden leachate produced during digestate dewatering, where the carbon source is insufficient for nitrogen removal. A two-stage partial nitrification-anammox/denitrification process was established for nitrogen removal of liquid digestate without pre-treatment (>300 d), through which nitrogen (95 %), biodegradable organics (100 %), sulfate (78 %) and iron (100 %) were efficiently removed. Additional ammonium conversion (20 %N) might be coupled with ferric and sulfate reduction, while produced nitrite could be further converted to di-nitrogen gas through anammox (75 %) and denitrification (25 %). Notably, since increasingly contribution of hydroxylamine producing nitrous oxide, and up-regulated expression of electron transfer and cytochrome c protein, the enhanced ammonium oxidation was probably conducted through extracellular polymeric substances-mediated electron transfer between sulfate/ferric-reducers and aerobic ammonium oxidizers. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX)-mediated system is a cost-effective green nitrogen removal process. However, there are few examples of successful application of this advanced wastewater denitrification process in wastewater treatment plants, and the understanding of how to implement anaerobic ammonia oxidation process in full-scale is still limited. In this study, it was found that the abundance of anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB) in the two livestock wastewater plants named J1 and J2, respectively, showed diametrically opposed trends of waxing and waning with time. The microbial communities of the activated sludge in the two plants at different time were sampled and analyzed by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. Structural equation models (SEMs) were used to reveal the key factors affecting the realization of the ANAMMOX. Changes in the concentration of dissolved oxygen and C/N had a significant effect on the relative abundance of anaerobic ammonia oxidation bacteria (AnAOB). The low concentration of DO (0.2∼0.5 mg/L) could inhibit the activity of nitrifying bacteria (NOB) to achieve partial oxidation of ammonia nitrogen and provide sufficient substrate for the growth of AnAOB, similar to the CANON (Completely Autotrophic Nitrogen removal Over Nitrite). Unlike CANON, heterotrophic denitrification is also a particularly critical part of the livestock wastewater treatment, and a suitable C/N of about 0.6 could reduce the competition risk of heterotrophic microorganisms to AnAOB and ensure a good ecological niche for AnAOB. Based on the results of 16S rRNA and microbial co-occurrence networks, it was discovered that microorganisms in the sludge not only had a richer network interaction, but also achieved a mutually beneficial symbiotic interaction network among denitrifying bacteria (Pseudomonas sp., Terrimonas sp., Dokdonella sp.), AnAOB (Candidatus Brocadia sp.) at DO of 0.2∼0.5 mg/L and C/N of 0.6. Among the top 20 in abundance of genus level, AnAOB had a high relative abundance of 27.66%, followed by denitrifying bacteria of 3.67%, AOB of 0.64% and NOB of 0.26%, which is an essential indicator for the emergence of an AnAOB-dominated nitrogen removal cycle. Dietary-derived substances possess significant potential as anthropogenic markers owing to the large consumption and different intake habit. To investigate and evaluate such markers, wastewater samples from 35 wastewater treatment plants across 29 Chinese cities were collected to analyze artificial sweeteners (acesulfame and cyclamate) and natural spicy compounds (capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin). Acesulfame (mean: 14.6 μg/L), cyclamate (mean: 24.3 μg/L), and capsaicin (mean: 101 ng/L) can be further investigated as anthropogenic markers due to their high detection frequency at high concentrations. Spatial use patterns revealed that acesulfame (5.31 g/d/1000 inhabitants (inh)) and cyclamate (8.16 g/d/1000 inh) use in northern China notably surpassed that in southern China (1.79 g/d/1000 inh and 3.23 g/d/1000 inh, p < 0.05). Conversely, chili pepper use was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in southern China (6702 g/d/1000 inh) than in northern China (2751 g/d/1000 inh), signifying a preference for sweetness in the northern regions and a predilection for spiciness in the southern regions. The total annual use of acesulfame (1842 t), cyclamate (3110 t), and chili (18.4 million tonnes) in China was estimated by this study, which was close to the national statistical production. In addition, sweetener use was negatively associated with the elderly population ratio, suggesting that the elderly population might not consume sweet foods. The start-up of a relatively high nitrogen load PD/Anammox in an EGSB reactor was achieved through strategies of bioaugmentation, mass transfer enhancement, and COD/NO 3 - -N control, with NRR of 5.2 g N/L/d. Longitudinal heterogeneity in EGSB reactor induced divergent nitrogen conversion pathways and enriched different functional microorganisms between stratified sludge. Along the elevation of the reactor, the proportion of removed nitrogen through anammox increased continuously from bottom, middle and up, which were 65.0 %, 79.8 %, and 84.1 %, respectively, consistent with the trend of ex-situ activities calculated with Gompertz model. The bottom zone played a role in mixed nitrogen conversion to provide NO 2 - -N accumulation and nitrogen removal, with higher abundance of Thauera, Denitratisoma and Ignavibacterium. The middle part was enriched Candidatus&#95;Kuenenia (12.51 %), and up inhibited completed denitrification, together forming the anammox dominant zone. Acupuncture is widely accepted as a therapeutic treatment by patients and healthcare providers globally. The safety record has been well established in acupuncture practice although some rare adverse events (AEs) were reported in the literature. While acupuncture-related AEs are generally defined as any undesirable event that occurs in patients during acupuncture treatment that may or may not be associated with the treatment, acupuncture-related adverse reactions (ARs) are defined as any undesirable or harmful reaction induced by trained practitioners practicing acupuncture treatment with standard doses. In this review, we clarify the relationship between AEs and ARs. Furthermore, we compile a list of acupuncture-related AEs reported in systematic reviews and meta-analysis articles. We find that serious acupuncture-related AEs are rare, with serious AEs occurring at a rate of approximately 0.04-0.08 per 10,000 treatments. The most likely serious AEs are pneumothorax, central and peripheral nerve injuries, heart injuries, abdominal organ injuries, infections, and needle breakage. Commonly reported minor AEs include bruising, hematoma, or bleeding at the needling site, as well as vasovagal reactions such as tiredness, dizziness, fainting, or residual pain at insertion points. The analysis identifies contributing factors for serious AEs being deep needle penetration, incorrect acupoint selection, and improper needle manipulation. It also addresses infections caused by contaminated needles, environmental factors, and inadequate skin disinfection. Moreover, other serious AEs, like needle breakage, are mostly due to aggressive manipulation and repeated reheating. Importantly, most acupuncture-related AEs are preventable. To avoid such AEs, acupuncturists in clinical practice should carefully select needling areas, be aware of cautions and contraindications of acupuncture, maintain safe acupuncture depth and hygiene, and strictly adhere to standard operating procedures.

In Taiwan, the Integrated Home Care (IHC) project was introduced for medically compromised patients living at home receiving Home Health Care (HHC) in 2016. The focus of the project was on organizing care teams and managing care for patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the benefits and impacts of IHC in Taiwan. The primary outcome measure was the mortality rate of patients who received IHC versus those who did not receive IHC (non-IHC). The secondary outcomes were medical utilization and expenditure. The results showed that IHC was associated with a statistically significant reduction in mortality compared to non-IHC for home-dwelling patients over 90-, 180-, and 365-days periods. Additionally, IHC users were less likely to be hospitalized and had shorter hospitalization times compared to non-IHC users. Furthermore, IHC was found to reduce medical expenditure compared to non-IHC.

The simultaneous monitoring of individual or multiple diseases can be achieved by selecting therapeutic medicines used to treat the primary symptoms of the condition as biomarkers in wastewater. This study proposes a novel approach to monitor the prevalence of COVID-19 and influenza A (H1N1) by selecting nine medicines to serve as biomarkers, including three antipyretics, three antivirals, and three cough suppressants. To verify our approach, wastewater samples were collected from seventeen urban and five rural wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in a Chinese city over a period of one year. The use of antipyretics increased notably during the COVID-19 pandemic, while the consumption of antivirals for influenza A (H1N1) rose in the post-COVID-19 pandemic period, indicating a minor spike in the occurrence of influenza A (H1N1) after the COVID-19 pandemic. Fever is a significant symptom of COVID-19 and can serve as a reliable indicator of disease prevalence. Our research found that the prevalence of COVID-19 in urban areas was significantly higher (at 78.5 %, 95 % CI: 73.4 % - 83.9 %) than in rural areas (with a prevalence of 48.1 %, 95 % CI: 42.4 % - 53.8 %). The prevalence of COVID-19 in urban areas in this study was consistent with the data reported by the Chinese center for Disease Control and Prevention (82.4 %). Continuous monitoring of WWTPs in urban areas with fluctuating populations and complex demographics can provide early disease warning. Maintaining redox homeostasis is an essential feature of cancer cells, and disrupting this homeostasis to cause oxidative stress and induce cell death is an important strategy in cancer therapy. M 4 IDP, a zoledronic acid derivative, can cause the death of human colorectal cancer cells by increasing the level of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, its potential molecular mechanism is unclear. Our in vitro studies showed that treatment with M 4 IDP promoted oxidative stress in HCT116 cells, as measured by the decreased ratios of GSH/GSSG and NADPH/NADP + and increased level of MDA. M 4 IDP could cause the decrease of GSH content, the increase of GSSG content, the decrease of NADPH content and pentose phosphate pathway flux, the downregulation of G6PD expression, the upregulation of unprenylated Rap1A and total expression of RhoA and CDC42. The increase of ROS and cytotoxicity induced by M 4 IDP could be reversed by the supplementation of NADPH, the overexpression of G6PD and the supplementation of GGOH. In vivo studies showed that M 4 IDP inhibited tumor growth in the human colorectal cancer xenograft mouse model, which was accompanied with a decreased [ 18 F]FDG uptake. Collectively, these results provide evidence that M 4 IDP can promote oxidation in colon cancer cells by inhibiting mevalonate pathway and pentose phosphate pathway and produce therapeutic effect. This study revealed for the first time a possible mechanism of bisphosphonate-induced increase of ROS in malignant tumor cells. Background: The physical tolerance in the advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patient often deteriorates, with a limited effective rate of the third-line treatment. This study retrospectively analyzed the efficacy and safety of etoposide soft capsules combined with anlotinib in the third-line treatment of advanced NSCLC., Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 46 patients with advanced NSCLC who had failed second-line treatment. Progression-free survival (PFS) of advanced NSCLC patients served as an endpoint. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were applied to evaluate the short-term efficacy of anlotinib treatment in advanced NSCLC patients., Results: Among 46 third-line NSCLC patients, none had complete remission (CR), 9 had partial remission (PR), 29 had stable disease (SD), and 8 had progressive disease (PD). The objective response rate (ORR) was 19.57%, the disease control rate (DCR) was 82.61%, the median progression-free survival (mPFS) was 6.3 months, and the median overall survival (mOS) was 10.1 months. Common adverse reactions included fatigue, hypertension, nausea, stomatitis, leukopenia, hand-foot syndrome, abnormal liver function, proteinuria, hemoptysis, and hypothyroidism, among others. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), stemming from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has had a profound global impact. This highly contagious pneumonia remains a significant ongoing threat. Uncertainties persist about the virus's effects on human health, underscoring the need for treatments and prevention. Current research highlights angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) as key targets against SARS-CoV-2. The virus relies on ACE2 to enter cells and TMPRSS2 to activate its spike protein. Inhibiting ACE2 and TMPRSS2 expression can help prevent and treat SARS-CoV-2 infections. Anisomeles indica (L.) Kuntze, a medicinal plant in traditional Chinese medicine, shows various promising pharmacological properties. In this study, ethanolic extracts of A. indica were examined both in vivo (250 and 500 μM) and in vitro (500 μM). Through Western blotting analysis, a significant reduction in the expression levels of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 proteins was observed in HepG2 (human hepatocellular carcinoma) cells and HEK 293T (human embryonic kidney) cell lines without inducing cellular damage. The principal constituents of A. indica , namely, ovatodiolide (5 and 10 μM), anisomlic acid (5 and 10 μM), and apigenin (12.5 and 25 μM), were also found to produce the same effect. Furthermore, immunohistochemical analysis of mouse liver, kidney, and lung tissues demonstrated a decrease in ACE2 and TMPRSS2 protein expression levels. Consequently, this article suggests that A. indica and its constituents have the potential to reduce ACE2 and TMPRSS2 protein expression levels, thus aiding in the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infections.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a type of interstitial pneumonia characterized by chronic and progressive fibrosis with an unknown etiology. Previous pharmacological studies have shown that Sanghuangporus sanghuang possesses various beneficial properties including immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, antitumor, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. This study used a bleomycin (BLM)-induced IPF mouse model to illustrate the possible benefits of SS in ameliorating IPF. BLM was administered on day 1 to establish a pulmonary fibrosis mouse model, and SS was administered through oral gavage for 21 d. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Masson's trichrome staining results showed that SS significantly reduced tissue damage and decreased fibrosis expression. We observed that SS treatment resulted in a substantial lowering in the level of pro-inflammatory cytokines like TGF-β, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 as well as MPO. In addition, we observed a notable increase in glutathione (GSH) levels. Western blot analysis of SS showed that it reduces inflammatory factors (TWEAK, iNOS, and COX-2), MAPK (JNK, p-ERK, and p-38), fibrosis-related molecules (TGF-β, SMAD3, fibronectin, collagen, α-SMA, MMP2, and MMP9), apoptosis (p53, p21, and Bax), and autophagy (Beclin-1, LC3A/B-I/II, and p62), and notably increases caspase 3, Bcl-2, and antioxidant (Catalase, GPx3, and SOD-1) levels. SS alleviates IPF by regulating the TLR4/NF-κB/MAPK, Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1, CaMKK/AMPK/Sirt1, and TGF-β/SMAD3 pathways. For intensive aquaculture in freshwater ponds, microcystin (MC-LR) generated from cyanobacterial blooms is one of the bottlenecks for the healthy and sustainable development of shrimp aquaculture industry. In this study, we measured the MC-LR content in the hepatopancreas and muscles of Litopenaeus vannamei stressed by MC-LR, and analyzed protein expression in the hepatopancreas using DIA high-throughput proteomics technology. The results showed that MC-LR content in the hepatopancreas and muscles reached the highest at 1 h after MC-LR injection, which was (6.12±0.45) μg·kg -1 and (5.00±0.19) μg·kg -1 , respectively. Then, it decreased gra-dually, with that in the hepatopancreas being significantly higher than in muscles. We identified 820 differential expressed proteins, including 586 up-regulated and 234 down-regulated ones. Results of bioinformatics analysis showed that MC-LR stress significantly affected immune-related pathways such as lysosome, RIG-Ⅰ receptor signals and interleukin-2. It also altered energy metabolisms including citrate cycle, metabolism of starch and sucrose, and interconversion of pentose and glucoronate, which in turn led to the disorder of carbohydrate metabolism. In addition, MC-LR significantly upregulated 19 cytoskeleton-related blood shadow proteins and damaged the hepatopancreas cytoskeleton. It was concluded that MC-LR mainly affected the physiological processes associated with immunity, energy metabolism, and cytoskeleton in the hepatopancreas of L. vannamei .

One of the most popular edible mushrooms in the world, Flammulina velutipes , has been shown to possess pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, the potential activity of the brown strain of F. velutipes , a hybrid between the white and yellow strains, has not been thoroughly investigated. Numerous studies have been conducted in recent years to determine whether natural products can aid in improving or treating kidney diseases. In this study, we focused on the renoprotective effects of the brown strain of F. velutipes on cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) in mice. Mice were pretreated with water extract from the brown strain of F. velutipes (WFV) from day 1 to day 10, with a single-dose intraperitoneal injection of cisplatin on day 7 to induce AKI. Our results demonstrated that WFV administration resulted in a reduction in weight loss and the amelioration of renal function and renal histological changes in mice with cisplatin-induced AKI. WFV improved antioxidative stress and anti-inflammatory capacity by increasing antioxidant enzymes and decreasing inflammatory factors. The expression of related proteins was determined via Western blot analysis, which showed that WFV could improve the expression of apoptosis and autophagy. We used the PI3K inhibitor Wortmannin and found that WFV achieved a protective effect by modulating the PI3K/AKT pathway and the expression of autophagy. Overall, WFV as a natural substance could be used as a new therapeutic agent for AKI.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted human lifestyles around the world, causing huge distress in terms of public health systems, emergency response capacity and economic development. The causative agent of COVID-19, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is associated with respiratory involvement, cardiovascular-related diseases, and ultimately causes multiple organ failure and death in severely affected individuals. Thus, effective prevention or early treatment of COVID-19 is critical. An effective vaccine offers a way out of the pandemic for governments, the scientific community and people worldwide, but we still lack effective drug therapies, including treatments for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. This had led to a high global demand for many complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs). Moreover, many healthcare providers are now requesting information about CAMs that prevent, relieve, or treat the symptoms of COVID-19 and even alleviate vaccine-related side effects. Experts and scholars must therefore become familiar with the use of CAMs in COVID-19, current research directions and effectiveness of CAMs for COVID-19. This narrative review updates the current status and research worldwide on the use of CAMs for COVID-19. The magnetic pinning properties of a ferromagnet/superconductor hybrid structure consisting of a La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) layer with various thicknesses on top of a fixed thickness YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7- x (YBCO) layer are investigated in this article. The existence of a weakly magnetic layer was identified at the interface between YBCO and LSMO by a ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) study. Magnetic moment and anisotropy of the interfacial layer were probed using the angular-dependent FMR study. This layer gives rise to an additional flux pinning contribution to the bulk magnetic pinning from the LSMO layer. Introduction: Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) accounts for the majority of all stroke, globally the second leading cause of death. Due to its rapid development after onset, its early diagnosis is crucial., Objectives: We aim to identify potential highly reliable blood-based biomarkers for early diagnosis of AIS using quantitative plasma lipid profiling via a machine learning approach., Methods: Lipidomics was used for quantitative plasma lipid profiling, based on ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Our samples were divided into a discovery and a validation set, each containing 30 AIS patients and 30 health controls (HC). Differentially expressed lipid metabolites were screened based on the criteria VIP > 1, p < 0.05, and fold change > 1.5 or < 0.67. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and random forest algorithms in machine learning were used to select differential lipid metabolites as potential biomarkers., Results: Three key differential lipid metabolites, CarnitineC10:1, CarnitineC10:1-OH and Cer(d18:0/16:0), were identified as potential biomarkers for early diagnosis of AIS. The former two, associated with thermogenesis, were down-regulated, whereas the latter, associated with necroptosis and sphingolipd metabolism, was upregulated. Univariate and multivariate logistic regressions showed that these three lipid metabolites and the resulting diagnostic model exhibited a strong ability in discriminating between AIS patients and HCs in both the discovery and validation sets, with an area under the curve above 0.9., Conclusions: Our work provides valuable information on the pathophysiology of AIS and constitutes an important step toward clinical application of blood-based biomarkers for diagnosing AIS., (© 2023. Objective: The emergency department (ED) is an opportune venue to screen for unmet social needs and connect patients with social services. This quality improvement study incorporates both qualitative and quantitative data to examine unmet social needs among ED patients and program implementation., Methods: From September 2020 to December 2021, an urban safety-net hospital adult ED implemented a social needs screening and referral program. Trained emergency staff screened eligible patients for 5 social needs (housing, food, transportation, utilities, employment), giving resource guides to patients who screened positive (THRIVE+). We collected screening data from the electronic health record, conducted semi-structured interviews with THRIVE+ patients and clinical staff, and directly observed discharge interactions., Results: Emergency staff screened 58.5% of eligible patients for social risk. Of the screened patients, 27.0% reported at least 1 unmet social need. Of those, 74.8% requested assistance. Screened patients reported housing insecurity (16.3%) as the most prevalent unmet social need followed by food insecurity (13.3%) and unemployment (8.7%). Among interviewed patients, 57.1% recalled being screened, but only 24.5% recalled receiving resource guides. Patients who received guides reported little success connecting with resources and supported universal guide dissemination. Staff expressed preference for warm handoff to social services. Of 13 observed discharge interactions, clinical staff only discussed guides with 2 patients, with no positive endorsement of the guides in any observed interactions., Conclusions: An ED social needs screening program can be moderately feasible and accepted. We identified housing as the most prevalent need. Significant gaps exist between screening and referral, with few patients receiving resources. With rapid economic development, an increasing number of people suffer from mental health diseases, which are gradually receiving the attention of society. However, basic data from surveys of mental disorders are limited. Composite influent samples were collected from 26 wastewater treatment plants in 23 major cities in China. The concentrations of the psychoactive drugs diphenhydramine, fluoxetine, doxepin, imipramine, sulpiride, zolpidem, carbamazepine, and flunitrazepam in the wastewater were determined. The detection frequency of diphenhydramine, sulpiride, and carbamazepine was close to 100 %, whereas that of the compounds was lower than 35 %. Carbamazepine had the highest mean consumption (31.1 mg/d/1000 people), followed by diphenhydramine (10.4 mg/d/1000 people) and sulpiride (11.3 mg/d/1000 people). Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) estimates of the average use of the three drugs were lower than those from the drug statistics data. Consumption of diphenhydramine in northern China was higher than that in southern China. A correlation analysis of psychotropic and illicit drugs revealed a correlation between sulpiride and heroin use, which may be related to the adverse effects of sulpiride treatment after heroin withdrawal. Psychotropic drug use is associated with both economic and social factors. We found associations between the use of the three drugs and age, occupation, and obesity, which are risk factors for mental disorders. Background: Low-back pain (LBP) in nurses is a major health concern that affects their quality of life and ability to work, with consequences for their economic status., Objective: This study evaluates the effect of low-level laser acupuncture combined with auricular acupressure (LAA) on pain intensity, pain interference and quality of life in nurses with LBP., Design, Setting, Participants and Interventions: This randomized controlled trial recruited a convenience sample of hospital-based nurses from one teaching hospital in Taiwan, China. Participants were randomly assigned to the LAA group (n = 38) receiving low-level laser acupuncture and auricular acupressure for 4 weeks, and the control group (n = 38) receiving only sham laser acupuncture treatment without laser energy output., Main Outcome Measures: Data were collected for the primary pain outcome using the Short Form of the Brief Pain Inventory, while the secondary outcome, quality of life, was evaluated using the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire. Both primary and secondary outcomes were scored before the intervention, and after 2-week and 4-week intervention. The rate of LBP recurrence was evaluated at the 4th week and 8th week after the end of intervention., Results: After controlling for prior pain, the result of linear mixed model analysis showed trends in significant between-group differences in the level of current pain occurring in week 4 (P < 0.001), worst pain in week 2 (P < 0.001) and week 4 (P < 0.001), least pain in week 2 (P = 0.032) and week 4 (P < 0.001), pain interference in week 2 (P = 0.009) and week 4 (P < 0.001), and in the life dysfunction in week 2 (P < 0.001) and week 4 (P < 0.001). Recurrence rates of LBP at the 4th and 8th weeks after the end of intervention were 0% and 36.89% in the LAA group, and 69.44% and 36.11% in the control group., Conclusion: This study shows that 4-week LAA intervention reduced pain intensity and pain interference, and improved quality of life for hospital-based nurses with LBP. These effects were maintained continuously for at least 4 weeks after the intervention. While it is well known that expression levels of metabolic enzymes regulate the metabolic state of the cell, there is mounting evidence that the converse is also true, that metabolite levels themselves can modulate gene expression via epigenetic modifications and transcriptional regulation. Here we focus on the one-carbon metabolic pathway, which provides the essential building blocks of many classes of biomolecules, including purine nucleotides, thymidylate, serine, and methionine. We review the epigenetic roles of one-carbon metabolic enzymes and their associated metabolites and introduce an interactive computational resource that places enzyme essentiality in the context of metabolic pathway topology. Therefore, we briefly discuss examples of metabolic condensates and higher-order complexes of metabolic enzymes downstream of one-carbon metabolism. We speculate that they may be required to the formation of transcriptional condensates and gene expression control. The current global pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) of COVID-19 has infected hundreds of millions of people, killed millions, and continues to pose a threat. It has become one of the largest epidemics in human history, causing enormous damage to people's lives and economies in the whole world. However, there are still many uncertainties and continued attention to the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on human health. The entry of SARS-CoV-2 into host cells is facilitated by the binding of the spike protein on the virus surface to the cell surface receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Furthermore, transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2) is a host surface protease that cleaves and proteolytically activates its S protein, which is necessary for viral infection. Thus, SARS-CoV-2 uses the ACE2 receptor for cell entry and initiates the S protein using the protease TMPRSS2. Schizophyllum commune (SC) is one of the most widely distributed fungi, often found on the rotten wood of trees that has been found to have various health benefits, including anticancer, antimicrobial activity, antiparasitic, and immunomodulatory function. In this article, SC significantly diminished the expression ACE2 and TMPRSS2 protein in vitro and in vivo without cell damage. In addition, adenosine from SC was also proven in this experiment to reduce the ACE2 and TMPRSS2 expression. Thus, our findings suggest that SC and adenosine exhibit potential for the repression of SARS-CoV-2 infection via the ACE2 and TMPRSS2 axis.

Background: Whether acupuncture therapy contributes to preserving residual renal function (RRF) remains largely unknown. This case series demonstrated the potential beneficial effects of acupuncture for preserving RRF in five patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis (HD) treatment., Participants: HD patients received eight sessions of weekly 30 min interdialytic acupuncture (Inter-A) at ten selected acupoints, namely Yintang (GV29), Yingxiang (LI20), Shuijin (Tung's Acupuncture), Lianquan (CV23), Shangqu (KI17), Tianshu (ST25), Siman (KI14), Hegu (LI4), Zusanli (ST36) and Sanyingjao (SP6). Residual urine volume (rUV) and residual glomerular filtration rate (rGFR) were recorded once every two weeks Outcomes: Changes in rUV and rGFR were calculated using 24 h urine collection data to assess RRF. Variations in hemoglobin, urea Kt/V and serum albumin levels were measured monthly to evaluate HD adequacy., Results: After eight Inter-A sessions, the mean[standard deviation] rUV and rGFR increased from 612[184] ml/day and 1.48[0.94] ml/min/1.73 m 2 at baseline to the peak of 803[289] ml/day and 2.04[1.17] ml/min/1.73 m 2 at 2- and 4-week follow-up, respectively. The mean percentage difference increased by 31% in the rUV and 37% in the rGFR. Routine measurements of HD adequacy also showed improvements., Conclusions: Acupuncture might be an optional add-on treatment for HD population with poor control of water; however, further well-designed controlled trials are warranted., (Copyright © 2022 The Authors.
