Abstract This research delves into the dynamic behavior of acoustic levitation of the particle chain in a nonlinear standing wave field. Experimental acoustic levitation control tests reveal bifurcation and jump phenomena during dynamic adjustments to resonant cavity height. Employing the 10-particle chain experiments and the COMSOL simulation models, the Sine-Gordon 2D vibration model is established to study the dynamic deformation process of the particle chain. The study uncovers the nonlinear interaction of particle lateral vibrations, horizontal acoustic radiation force, and conical wave fields that generate the jumping standing wave field. Notably, the fourth particle acts as a prominent jumping critical point in the secondary standing wave field, facilitating the derivation of the particle chain’s nonlinear levitation dynamics. This discovery provides us with a new method to regulate the particle chain system.

Abstract This study aims at the controllability of acoustically manipulated non-contact aggregation of bi-particle. Based on the acoustic wave radiation model of the transducer and the acoustic wave interference theory, the mathematical model between the spatial levitation point and the phase of the phased array ultrasonic array unit is established. A double-sided phased array test system was developed and the phase calculation algorithm for independently manipulating bi-particle was optimized. The algorithm is capable of independently distributing the energy applied to each levitation point. Through simulation and experiment, the horizontally aggregation characteristics of two levitated particles are investigated, and a interesting relationship between particles aggregation and standing wave phase difference is revealed, which follows the law of “attraction in the same phase but repulsion in the opposite phase”. By adjusting the tilt angle of the standing wave acoustic trap, the critical distance when particles to accelerate and collision is sharply reduced from 1.5λ to 0.5λ, which provides a new perspective and potential application path for acoustic manipulation technology.

BackgroundPatients undergoing liver transplantation (LT) are at risk of perioperative neurocognitive dysfunction (PND), which significantly affects the patients’ prognosis. ObjectiveThis study used machine learning (ML) algorithms with an aim to extract critical predictors and develop an ML model to predict PND among LT recipients. MethodsIn this retrospective study, data from 958 patients who underwent LT between January 2015 and January 2020 were extracted from the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Six ML algorithms were used to predict post-LT PND, and model performance was evaluated using area under the receiver operating curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and F1-scores. The best-performing model was additionally validated using a temporal external dataset including 309 LT cases from February 2020 to August 2022, and an independent external dataset extracted from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care Ⅳ (MIMIC-Ⅳ) database including 325 patients. ResultsIn the development cohort, 201 out of 751 (33.5%) patients were diagnosed with PND. The logistic regression model achieved the highest AUC (0.799) in the internal validation set, with comparable AUC in the temporal external (0.826) and MIMIC-Ⅳ validation sets (0.72). The top 3 features contributing to post-LT PND diagnosis were the preoperative overt hepatic encephalopathy, platelet level, and postoperative sequential organ failure assessment score, as revealed by the Shapley additive explanations method. ConclusionsA real-time logistic regression model-based online predictor of post-LT PND was developed, providing a highly interoperable tool for use across medical institutions to support early risk stratification and decision making for the LT recipients.

In the process of artificial breeding, due to the lack of rigorous and standardized screening and cultivation of parent fish, the quality of M. armatus' seedlings had sharply declined, seriously affecting the sustainable and healthy development of the artificial breeding industry of M. armatus. Therefore, we set up four breeding combinations (HH, Huizhou ♂ x Huizhou ♀; KK, Kaiping ♂ x Kaiping ♀; HK, Huizhou ♂ x Kaiping ♀; KH, Kaiping ♂ x Huizhou ♀) to study the effect of hybridization on the growth performance of M. armatus. After hatching, the juvenile fish were continuously farmed for 180 days, and their total length and weight were measured every 60 days. Liver tissues from various combinations were collected for transcriptome and metabolomic analysis. Compared with the HH combination and the KK combination, the total length and weight of individuals in the HK combination and the KH combination were significantly increased, and the expression levels of GH in brain tissue and GH, IGF-Ⅰ in muscle tissue were significantly up-regulated. Transcriptome analysis showed that the growth of individuals in the dominant hybrid combination (HK combination) was related to genes such as SCD, FASN, PPARα, ACO, etc. in the lipid metabolism pathways. Metabolomic analysis showed that the glycerol content in the HK combination was significantly lower than that in the KK combination. The combined analysis of transcriptome and metabolome showed that hybrid advantage was well demonstrated in the lipid metabolism pathways, and high expression of PPARα could promote the expression of AQP9 protein, further promoting the liver's uptake and metabolism of glycerol. The research results indicated that individuals in the HK combination had higher lipid synthesis and metabolic ability, and one of the hybrid advantages of M. armatus was its efficient utilization of glycerol.

Plesiomonas shigelloides (P. shigelloides), a dominant pathogenic strain identified as YY001, was successfully isolated and characterized from the hepatopancreas of diseased Mastacembelus armatus (M. armatus) for the first time. The strain was identified through a comprehensive approach that included morphological, physiological, and biochemical characterization, as well as 16S rRNA, 23S rRNA, and gyrB gene sequence analysis. Strain YY001 is classified as a Gram-negative bacterium, with optimal growth conditions observed at 28°C and pH 7.0. Results from the bacterium hemolysis test indicated the absence of hemolytic activity in YY001. However, the strain exhibited amplification of nine virulence genes: nanE, waaA, clpP, ssb, actP, aphA, astA, astD, and astB. Drug-resistance testing showed that YY001 displayed resistance only to penicillin G, oxacillin, norfloxacin, and tetracycline, while remaining sensitive to the majority of other antibiotics. Furthermore, nine drug-resistance genes, including emrD, catB, macB, ksgA, tolC, bacA, MdfA, sul1, and DegP, were detected through amplification. Experimental infection demonstrated that YY001 induced symptoms such as abdominal swelling, visceral edema, and hemorrhage, with hepatopancreatic manifestations being particularly severe. The median lethal dosage of strain YY001 in M. armatus was 9.7×108 colony-forming units (CFU)/mL within 48 h, and 4.9×106 CFU/mL within 192 h under the conditions of intraperitoneal injection. The hepatopancreas, gill, and intestine of infected fish showed obvious pathological symptoms, including tissue loosening, hemorrhage, and cell necrosis. The results of this study provided evidence for a more comprehensive understanding of P. shigelloides strain YY001 infection in M. armatus.

Mastacembelus armatus is an important economic fish in China. Since males grow faster and larger than females, breeding monosex M. armatus has great value in the aquaculture industry. Cultivating YY fish is the key to producing genetically all male M. armatus. However, there have been no reports on production of fertile YY supermale, and the production technique of all-male fish has not yet been established in M. armatus. In this study, YY M. armatus offspring were obtained by mating XY pseudofemales with XY males and it was proved that YY fish is sublethal. The offspring were cultured under LE and AS treatment, followed by sex-linked marker screening, to obtain YY pseudofemales and YY supermales, respectively. A portion of YY supermales proved to be viable and fertile, but the fertility of YY pseudofemale still needs further verification. Subsequently, by mating XX females with YY supermales and performing AS treatment on their offspring, mass production of genetically all male M. armatus could be achieved. For the first time, YY M. armatus was confirmed to be able to survive and has obtained fertile YY supermale fish. In addition, marker assisted selection (MAS) technique was established to produce genetically all male fish (GM) in M. armatus (MAS-GM technique). This is expected to significantly increase the yield and economic benefits of the M. armatus aquaculture industry. Beyond that, YY fish provides useful material for understanding the sex determination mechanism of M. armatus. In summary, MAS-GM technique can achieve the all-male breeding of M. armatus, laying the foundation for the development of standardized M. armatus farming.

Following ion-adsorption rare earth mining, the residual tailings experience considerable heavy metal contamination and gradually evolve into a pollution source. Therefore, the leaching characteristics and environmental impact of heavy metals in ion-adsorption rare earth tailings require immediate and thorough investigation. This study adopted batch and column experiments to investigate the leaching behaviour of heavy metals in tailings and assess the impact of tailings on paddy soil, thereby providing a scientific basis for environmental protection in mining areas. The results showed that Mn, Zn, and Pb contents were 431.67, 155.05, and 264.33 mg·kg−1, respectively, which were several times higher than their respective background values, thereby indicating significant heavy metal contamination in the tailings. The batch leaching experiment indicated that Mn and Pb were priority control heavy metals. Heavy metals were divided into fast and slow leaching stages. The Mn and Pb leaching concentrations far exceeded environmental limits. The DoseResp model perfectly fitted the leaching of all heavy metals from the tailings (R2 > 0.99). In conjunction with the findings of the column experiment and correlation analysis, the chemical form, rainfall pH, ammonia nitrogen, and mineral properties were identified as the primary factors controlling heavy metal release from tailings. Rainfall primarily caused heavy metal migration in the acid-extraction form from the tailings. The tailing leachate not only introduced heavy metals into the paddy soil but also caused the transformation of the chemical form of heavy metals in the paddy soil, further exacerbating the environmental risk posed by heavy metals. The study findings are significant for environmental conservation in mining areas and implementing environmentally friendly practices in rare earth mining.

4,4′-azobis(1,2,4-triazole) (Atrz) is an excellent thermally stable explosive that is widely used to synthesize high-energy nitrogen-rich compounds. However, current methods for synthesizing this compound are low-yield and exothermic. In order to overcome these limitations, in this study, a continuous method based on the use of continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) was used to prepare Atrz for the first time, and the optimal experimental conditions were obtained by single factor experimental method and orthogonal experimental method. The yield of Atrz increased from 20%-30% to 71.84%, and the purity reached 98.54%. The use of CSTR enables materials to be mixed efficiently, making the reaction process efficient and environmentally friendly. At the same time, this method has the advantages of simple reaction process, easy large-scale continuous production, and high yield.

In orchard environments, negative obstacles such as ditches and potholes pose significant safety risks to robots working within them. This paper proposes a negative obstacle detection method based on LiDAR tilt mounting. With the LiDAR tilted at 40°, the blind spot is reduced from 3 m to 0.21 m, and the ground point cloud density is increased by an order of magnitude. Based on geometric features of laser point clouds (such as rear wall height and density, and spacing jump between points), a method for detecting negative obstacles is presented. This method establishes a mathematical model by analyzing changes in point cloud height, density, and point spacing, integrating features captured from multiple frames to enhance detection accuracy. Experiments demonstrate that this approach effectively detects negative obstacles in orchard environments, achieving a success rate of 92.7% in obstacle detection. The maximum detection distance reaches approximately 8.0 m, significantly mitigating threats posed to robots by negative obstacles in orchards. This research contributes valuable technological advancements for future orchard automation.

Abstract High-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) is a heterogeneous disease, and a highstromal/desmoplastic tumor microenvironment (TME) is associated with a poor outcome. Stromal cell subtypes, including fibroblasts, myofibroblasts, and cancer-associated mesenchymal stem cells, establish a complex network of paracrine signaling pathways with tumor-infiltrating immune cells that drive effector cell tumor immune exclusion and inhibit the antitumor immune response. In this work, we integrate single-cell transcriptomics of the HGSOC TME from public and in-house datasets (n = 20) and stratify tumors based upon high vs. low stromal cell content. Although our cohort size is small, our analyses suggest a distinct transcriptomic landscape for immune and non-immune cells in high-stromal vs. low-stromal tumors. High-stromal tumors have a lower fraction of certain T cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and macrophages, and increased expression of CXCL12 in epithelial cancer cells and cancer-associated mesenchymal stem cells (CA-MSCs). Analysis of cell-cell communication indicate that epithelial cancer cells and CA-MSCs secrete CXCL12 that interacte with the CXCR4 receptor, which is overexpressed on NK and CD8+ T cells. Dual IHC staining show that tumor infiltrating CD8 T cells localize in proximity of CXCL12+ tumor area. Moreover, CXCL12 and/or CXCR4 antibodies confirm the immunosuppressive role of CXCL12-CXCR4 in high-stromal tumors.

In this study, four groups of diet were prepared, with eel commercial diet without hydrolyzable tannin (HT) as the control group (H0), and the other three groups were fed with diet containing 0.05% (H1), 0.1% (H2), and 0.2% (H3) doses of HT to juvenile Mastacembelus armatus with an initial body weight of (0.40 ± 0.005) g. Juvenile fish in all groups were fed continuously for 60 days. Growth indices, hepatopancreatic antioxidant enzymes, biochemical indices (including total superoxide dismutase [T-SOD], catalase [CAT], malondialdehyde [MDA], total antioxidant capacity [T-AOC], alanine aminotransferase [ALT], aspartate aminotransferase [AST], alkaline phosphatase [AKP], and triglyceride [TG]), the content of muscle amino acids and fatty acids, stomach and intestine enzyme activities (pepsin, amylase, lipase), and genes expressions were evaluated. The results showed that 0.1% HT significantly improved the growth performance, hepatopancreatic antioxidant capacity, as well as muscle quality and lipase activity of juvenile M. armatus. In summary, the optimal addition level of HT in the diet of juvenile M. armatus is 0.1%, which helps to improve aquaculture efficiency and improve the muscle quality of M. armatus. However, the long-term effects of feeding HT on M. armatus and its physiological reaction mechanism need to be further explored.

In this paper, we investigate the impact of modified SiO2 nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) composites through a combination of molecular dynamics simulation and experimentation. Our investigation focuses on analyzing the elastic modulus, bulk modulus, shear modulus, and Cauchy ratio of pure PMMA, PMMA/SiO2 composites, and PMMA/modified SiO2 composites over a temperature range of 200–400 K. Our results indicate that, as the temperature increases, the elastic modulus, bulk modulus, and Cauchy ratio of all materials decrease, while the shear modulus initially increases and then decreases. Notably, at room temperature, the elastic modulus, bulk modulus, and shear modulus of the composites increase with an increase in the degree of nanoparticle modification, while the Cauchy ratio exhibits the opposite trend. Our findings suggest that modified SiO2 nanoparticles have the potential to enhance the mechanical properties of composite materials. To validate our simulation results, we also conducted experiments that demonstrated the rationality of our approach.

In order to explore the main regulatory genes and related pathways of growth traits, transcriptome sequencing was first performed on the brain, liver, and muscle tissues of 3-month-old M. armatus with different growth rates. By comparative transcriptome analysis of fast-growing and slow-growing groups of M. armatus, a total of 2887 DEGs were screened, of which 59 up-regulated genes and 105 down-regulated genes were detected in the brain, 146 up-regulated genes and 202 down-regulated genes were detected in the liver, and 529 up-regulated genes and 1846 down-regulated genes were detected in muscle, including insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1a (IGFBP1A), insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1b (IGFBP1B), myosin, light chain 1 (MYL1), and myoglobin (MB). Through Gene Ontology (GO) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis, we identified a total of 288 significantly enriched GO entries and 68 significantly enriched KEGG pathways related to growth, such as skeletal muscle tissue development, insulin-like growth factor binding, and the mitotic cell cycle. These key genes and signaling pathways may play a key role in regulating the growth of M. armatus. Digging into the regulatory mechanisms of these key genes will provide a theoretical basis for further exploration of the molecular mechanisms related to the growth and development of M. armatus, and help to breed new varieties of M. armatus with rapid growth.

Abstract Background In brown algae, dioicy is the prevalent sexual system, and phenotypic differences between male and female gametophytes have been found in many dioicous species. Saccharina japonica show remarkable sexual dimorphism in gametophytes before gametogenesis. A higher level of phenotypic differentiation was also found in female and male gametes after gametogenesis. However, the patterns of differential gene expression throughout gametophyte development and how these changes might relate to sex-specific fitness at the gamete stage in S. japonica are not well known. Results In this study, differences in gene expression between male and female gametophytes in different developmental stages were investigated using comparative transcriptome analysis. Among the 20,151 genes expressed in the haploid gametophyte generation, 37.53% were sex-biased. The abundance of sex-biased genes in mature gametophytes was much higher than that in immature gametophytes, and more male-biased than female-biased genes were observed in the mature stage. The predicted functions of most sex-biased genes were closely related to the sex-specific characteristics of gametes, including cell wall biosynthesis, sperm motility, and sperm and egg recognition. In addition, 51 genes were specifically expressed in males in both stages, showing great potential as candidate male sex-determining region (SDR) genes. Conclusions This study describes a thorough investigation into differential gene expression between male and female gametophytes in the dioicous kelp S. japonica. A large number of sex-biased genes in mature gametophytes may be associated with the divergence of phenotypic traits and physiological functions between female gametes (eggs) and male gametes (sperm) during sexual differentiation. These genes may mainly come from new sex-biased genes that have recently evolved in the S. japonica lineage. The duplication of sex-biased genes was detected, which may increase the number of sex-biased genes after gametogenesis in S. japonica to some extent. The excess of male-biased genes over female-biased genes in the mature stage may reflect the different levels of sexual selection across sexes. This study deepens our understanding of the regulation of sex development and differentiation in the dioicous kelp S. japonica.

Calmodulins (CaMs) and Calmodulin-like proteins (CMLs) are vital in plant growth, development, and stress responses. However, CaMs and CMLs have not been fully identified and characterized in brown algae, which has been evolving independently of the well-studied green plant lineage. In this study, whole-genome searches revealed one SjCaM and eight SjCMLs in Saccharina japonica, and one EsCaM and eleven EsCMLs in Ectocarpus sp. SjCaM and EsCaM encoded identical protein products and shared 88.59–89.93% amino acid identities with Arabidopsis thaliana AtCaMs, thereby indicating that brown algae CaMs retained a similar Ca2+ sensors function as in plants. The phylogenetic and gene structure analysis results showed that there was significant divergence in the gene sequences among brown algae CMLs. Furthermore, evolutionary analysis indicated that the function of brown alga CMLs was relatively conserved, which may be related to the fact that brown algae do not need to face complex environments like terrestrial plants. Regulatory elements prediction and the expression analysis revealed the probable functioning of SjCaM/CML genes in gametophyte development and the stress response in S. japonica. In addition, the SjCaM/SjCMLs interacting proteins and chemicals were preliminarily predicted, suggesting that SjCaM/SjCMLs might play putative roles in Ca2+/CaM-mediated growth and development processes and stimulus responses. Therefore, these results will facilitate our understanding of the evolution of brown algae CaMs/CMLs and the functional identification of SjCaM/SjCMLs.

Soil salinity has become a major stress factor that reduces crop productivity worldwide. Sodium (Na+) toxicity in a number of crop plants is tightly linked with shoot Na+ overaccumulation, thus Na+ exclusion from shoot is crucial for salt tolerance in crops. In this study, we identified a member of the high-affinity K+ transport family (HAK), OsHAK12, which mediates shoots Na+ exclusion in response to salt stress in rice. The Oshak12 mutants showed sensitivity to salt toxicity and accumulated more Na+ in the xylem sap, leading to excessive Na+ in the shoots and less Na+ in the roots. Unlike typical HAK family transporters that transport K+, OsHAK12 is a Na+-permeable plasma membrane transporter. In addition, OsHAK12 was strongly expressed in the root vascular tissues and induced by salt stress. These findings indicate that OsHAK12 mediates Na+ exclusion from shoot, possibly by retrieving Na+ from xylem vessel thereby reducing Na+ content in the shoots. These findings provide a unique function of a rice HAK family member and provide a potential target gene for improving salt tolerance of rice.

Acoustic radiation forces have been extensively studied regarding static particles, cell patterning, and dynamic transportation. Compared with standing wave manipulation, traveling wave manipulation can be more easily modulated in real time and has no matching requirement between the size of the resonant cavity and the sound frequency. In this work, we present an efficient, multi-layer microparticle pattern technique in a 3D polygon cavity with a traveling bulk acoustic wave. There are two types of excitation modes: the interval excitation mode (IEM) and the adjacent excitation mode (AEM). We conducted theoretical and simulation analyses, and our results show that both of these modes can form particle arrays in the resonant cavity, which is in accordance with the experimental results. The array spacings in the IEM and AEM were about 0.8 mm and 1.3 mm, respectively, while the acoustic frequency was 1MHz. Double-layer particle patterns were arrayed by a double in the resonant cavity. The spacing between the two layers was set at 3.0 mm. The line spacings were about 0.4 mm in both layers. The line width was 0.2 mm, which was larger than the single layer. The results show that ultrasonic traveling waves are a feasible method to manipulate particles and cells that form 3D patterns in particle–fluid flows.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by a heterozygous CAG repeat expansion in the ataxin 3 gene ( ATXN3 ). However, patients with homozygous SCA3 carrying expanded CAG repeats in both alleles of ATXN3 are extremely rare. Herein, we present a case of a 50-year-old female who had homozygous SCA3 with expansion of 62/62 repeats. Segregation analysis of the patient’s family showed both a contraction pattern of CAG repeat length and stable transmission. The present case demonstrated an earlier onset and more severe clinical phenotype than that seen in heterozygous individuals, suggesting that the gene dosage enhances disease severity.

Ultrasound technology, which is environment-friendly and economical, has emerged as a novel strategy that can be used to enhance the partial nitrification process. However, its effect on this process remains unclear. Therefore, in this study, partial nitrification sludge was subjected to low-intensity (0.15 W/mL) ultrasound treatment for 10 min, and the effect of ultrasonic treatment on the partial nitrification process was evaluated based on changes in reactor performance, sludge characteristics, and the properties of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The results obtained showed that the ultrasonic treatment enhanced nitrite accumulation performance as well as the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria from 3.3 to 16.6 mg O2/g VSS,⋅while inhibiting the activity of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria. Further analysis showed that owing to the ultrasonic treatment, there was an increase in EPS contents. Particularly, there was a significant increase in loosely bound polysaccharide (PS) contents, indicating the occurrence of intracellular PS anabolics as well as PS secretion. Additionally, ultrasonic treatment induced a significant increase in carbonyl, hydroxyl, and amine functional group contents, and EPS analysis results revealed that it had a positive effect on mass transfer efficiency; thus, it enhanced the partial nitrification process. Overall, this study describes the effect of intermittent low-intensity ultrasound on the partial nitrification process as well as the associated enhancement mechanism.

Determining the concentration of glutathione is crucial for developing workable medical diagnostic strategies. In this paper, we developed an electrochemical sensor by electrodepositing amino-based reactive groups and gold–platinum nanomaterials on the surface of glassy carbon electrode successively. The sensor was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS). Results showed that Au@Pt nanoparticles with the size of 20–40 nm were presented on the surface of electrode. The sensor exhibits excellent electrocatalytic oxidation towards glutathione. Based on this, we devised an electrochemical biosensor for rapid and sensitive detection of glutathione. After optimizing experimental and operational conditions, a linear response for the concentration of GSH, in the range of 0.1–11 μmol/L, with low detection and quantification limits of 0.051 μM (S/N = 3), were obtained. The sensor also exhibits superior selectivity, reproducibility, low cost, as well as simple preparation and can be applied in human serum sample detection.

Introduction Sediment and nutrient retention have significant impacts on agricultural productivity and water quality. Obvious changes of climate and land-use have deeply affected freshwater ecosystem services in the last several decades. Nevertheless, it is unclear what the differences are in the impact of climate and land-use changes on freshwater ecosystem services. Outcomes The impacts of climate and land-use change on sediment and nutrient retention (two essential freshwater ecosystem services) were evaluated with the help of the Integrated Valuation of Environmental Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model. The results from the study area suggest a decreasing trend in sediment and nutrient retention from 1995 to 2015 when climate and land-use were changed simultaneously. A decreasing trend in sediment retention and an increasing trend in nutrient retention were presented under scenario A (climate change from 1995 to 2015 with land-use unchanged), while the sediment exported and nutrient retention exhibited a decreasing trend except sediment retained under scenario B (land-use change from 1995 to 2015 with unchanged climate). Rainfall erosivity and soil erodibility were more sensitive to the output of sediment retention, while retention efficiency produced more of an effect on nutrient retention. Discussion and Conclusion Climate change played a dominant role in the change in sediment retention, while land-use change had a more significant effect on nutrient retention change than climate change. The results of this study provide explicitinformation for land-use managers to reduce the negative effects associated with sediment and nutrient retention.

Collecting sweat and monitoring its rate is important for determining body condition and further sweat analyses, as this provides vital information about physiologic status and fitness level and could become an alternative to invasive blood tests in the future. Presented here is a one-dollar, disposable, paper-based microfluidic chip for real-time monitoring of sweat rate. The chip, pasted on any part of the skin surface, consists of a skin adhesive layer, sweat-proof layer, sweat-sensing layer, and scale layer with a disk-shape from bottom to top. The sweat-sensing layer has an impressed wax micro-channel containing pre-added chromogenic agent to show displacement by sweat, and the sweat volume can be read directly by scale lines without any electronic elements. The diameter and thickness of the complete chip are 25 mm and 0.3 mm, respectively, permitting good flexibility and compactness with the skin surface. Tests of sweat flow rate monitoring on the left forearm, forehead, and nape of the neck of volunteers doing running exercise were conducted. Average sweat rate on left forearm (1156 g·m−2·h−1) was much lower than that on the forehead (1710 g·m−2·h−1) and greater than that on the nape of the neck (998 g·m−2·h−1), in good agreement with rates measured using existing common commercial sweat collectors. The chip, as a very low-cost and convenient wearable device, has wide application prospects in real-time monitoring of sweat loss by body builders, athletes, firefighters, etc., or for further sweat analyses.

In this paper, phase field model is employed to simulate the process of femtosecond laser which irradiates on silicon surface. The numerical model is mainly used to study the micro/nano evolution process and the atomic diffusion motion of the system. Meanwhile, the Semi-Implicit Fourier spectral method and Semi-Implicit Backwards Differentiation Formula are applied for high efficiency and numerical stability. Further, the rules of surface bumps are controlled by different thermal conductivities which are systematically revealed. Our work provides a new prospect for fabricating the bumps of the probe, to obtain high sensitivity sensors in chemical and biological fields.

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) was imbedded in agar and stored at 4 °C for 30 days, and then the stored granules were recovered in a sequencing batch reactor fed real wastewater within 11 days. Variations in microbial community compositions were investigated during dry storage and recovery of AGS, aiming to elucidate the mechanism of granular stability loss and recovery. The storage and recovery of AGS involved microbial community evolution. The dominant bacterial genera of the mature AGS were Zoogloea (relative abundance of 22.39%), Thauera (16.03%) and Clostridium_sensu_stricto (11.17%), and those of the stored granules were Acidovorax (26.79%), Macellibacteroides (12.83%) and Pseudoxanthomonas (5.69%), respectively. However, the dominant genera were Streptococcus (43.64%), Clostridium_sensu_stricto (12.3.6%) and Lactococcus (11.47%) in the recovered AGS. Methanogens were always the dominant archaeal species in mature AGS (93.01%), stored granules (99.99%) and the recovered AGS (94.84%). Facultative anaerobes and anaerobes proliferated and dominated in the stored granules, and their metabolic activities gradually led to granular structure destruction and property deterioration. However, the stored granules served as carriers for the microbes originated from the real septic tank wastewater during recovery. They proliferated rapidly and secreted a large number of extracellular polymeric substances which helped to recover the granular structure in 11 days.

Aiming at the key factors affecting the quality and efficiency of high-energy in-beam machining, this paper studies the broadband acoustic focusing effect based on a discrete temperature gradient. Firstly, the basic theory and mathematical model of temperature-controlled acoustic focusing are established. Secondly, the acoustic focusing effect is achieved by combining the design of metasurfaces and discrete temperature. Then, the acoustic pressure and intensity distribution of acoustic focusing under a discrete temperature gradient are simulated and experimentally studied. The results show that the phase delay of transmission and reflection of acoustic wave covers the 2π interval by changing the temperature in different transmission units, which provides a theoretical basis for the processing of the acoustic focusing cavity.

This work proposes a detailed process of micro/nano-structure surface modification in relation to temperature field. In this paper, a femtosecond laser is used to induce the surface morphology of a silicon substrate. We provide a new method for the fabrication of a micro/nano-cantilever probe by controlling the aspect ratio of the silicon surface morphology. A computational method is used to investigate the mechanical behaviors of early perturbation to late-stage structure. A diffuse interface model is employed to describe the evolution and provide a general framework. The theoretical model of femtosecond laser control surface morphology is verified by the experiments. For systematic study, the model involves the interface energy and kinetics of diffusion. This method provides an effective way to improve the sensitivity of micro/nano-cantilever sensors.

The aim of this research was to evaluate doxorubicin (DOX)-loaded zein in situ gels, a new drug delivery system in which a liquid state drug can be transformed into semi-solid after intratumoral injection. In vitro release of DOX-loaded zein was investigated and the pharmacokinetics, biodistribution and therapeutic efficacy of these DOX-loaded zein formulations were investigated using BALB/c nude tumor-bearing mice. In vitro release of DOX from the gels extended up to 7 days. Efficient accumulation of DOX in the tumor with lower drug concentration in blood and normal organs was obtained resulting in effective inhibition of tumor growth and fewer off-target side effects. In conclusion, a DOX-loaded in situ gel was developed with sustained release, enhanced anti-cancer efficacy for colorectal cancer in vivo, and especially with reduced off-target side effects.

Catalytic gas sensors are widely used for measuring concentrations of combustible gases to prevent explosive accidents in industrial and domestic environments. The typical structure of the sensitive element of the sensor consists of carrier and catalyst materials, which are in and around a platinum coil. However, the size of the platinum coil is micron-grade and typically has a cylindrical shape. It is extremely difficult to control the amount of carrier and catalyst materials and to fulfill the inner cavity of the coil, which adds to the irreproducibility and uncertainty of the sensor performance. To solve this problem, this paper presents a new method which uses a drop-on-demand droplet generator to add the carrier and catalytic materials into the platinum coil and fabricate the micropellistor. The materials in this article include finely dispersed Al2O3 suspension and platinum palladium (Pd-Pt) catalyst. The size of the micropellistor with carrier material can be controlled by the number of the suspension droplets, while the amount of Pd-Pt catalyst can be controlled by the number of catalyst droplets. A bridge circuit is used to obtain the output signal of the gas sensors. The original signals of the micropellistor at 140 mV and 80 mV remain after aging treatment. The sensitivity and power consumption of the pellistor are 32 mV/% CH4 and 120 mW, respectively.

Cadmium (Cd) is a known environmental pollutant that is associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, and cell apoptosis. Astragalus polysaccharide (APS) is a major component of Astragalus membranaceus, a vital qi-reinforcing herb medicine with favorable immuneregulation properties. To study the effect of APS on the inhibition of the cadmium-induced injury of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) in chickens through the MDA5/NF-κB signaling pathway, PLBs acquired from 15-day-old chickens were divided into control group, Cd group, APS + Cd group, anti-MDA5 mAb + Cd group, BAY 11-7082 (a nuclear factor kappa-light chain-enhancer of activated B cells [NF-κB] inhibitor) +Cd group, APS group, anti-MDA5 mAb group, and BAY 11-7082 group. The transcription levels of melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5), interferon promoter-stimulating factor 1 (IPS-1), NF-κB, and inflammatory factors tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6 were measured by quantitative real-time PCR. MDA5 protein expression was measured by western blotting. Levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were measured by corresponding antioxidant kit. The morphological change of PBLs was measured by transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that Cd significantly increased the expression of MDA5, IPS-1, NF-κB, and their downstream cytokines, IL-1β and TNF-α, IL-6 in PLBs. In addition, a high level of MDA was observed in the Cd treatment group; the activities of GSH-Px and SOD were significantly lower in the Cd treatment group than those in controls (p < 0.05). Ultrastructural changes of PBLs showed that Cd promoted autophagy, apoptosis, and necrosis in PBLs. However, APS can efficiently improve Cd-induced cell damage by decreasing the activation of the MDA5 signaling pathway. The effect is consistent with that of anti-MDA5 mAb or/and BAY. The results indicated that APS inhibited Cd-induced cytotoxicity through the regulation of MDA5/NF-κB signaling.

To prepare aceclofenac pellets by centrifugal granulation. Using 90~100 g of starch pellets as the core pellets,100 g of aceclofenac mixed with 50 g of microcrystalline cellulose(MCC) and 4 g talc, methyl cellulose (HPMC) as binder,the aceclofenac pellets were prepared by centrifugal granulation .And evaluate the quality of the pellets. The aceclofenac pellets had high yield and less losses,the pellets had a partical size of 0.70~0.88 mm（18~24 mesh）and had uniform particle size .the moisture ,drug content and dissolution meet the requirement . Aceclofenac pellets were prepared by the process of centrifugal granulation .The preparation prescription and process parameters were optimized by single factor method .and the pellets meet the standard requirements.

In recent years, the difference-of-convex (DC) optimization has been successfully applied to real-world problems, including signal recovery and image processing. In this paper, we apply a special case of DC optimization, l1 - l2 optimization, to the application of function approximation. Using the sparsity-promoting property of l1 - l2 optimization, we aim to extract an approximation of an unknown function with parsimonious terms from random features. Using concentration inequalities of random variables, we derive a probabilistic error bound for a certain class of functions. From approximation experiments on both synthetic and real datasets, we demonstrate that the proposed optimization outperforms the benchmark algorithm in the aspect of approximation accuracy and robustness to randomness.
