Context: Ankle sprains are a common injury in sports, for which use of external ankle support during rehabilitation has been suggested to improve clinical outcomes. Design: Cohort study. Methods: Thirteen soccer players experiencing acute lateral ankle sprain injury were provided a novel adaptive ankle brace or conventional ankle taping (control) as external ankle support throughout the injury rehabilitation process. All other clinical procedures were identical, and rehabilitation was supervised by the same team staff member. Time from injury to clearance to return to sport was tracked. Player experience with the ankle brace also was queried via electronic surveys. Results: The median time to return to sport was less for the Brace group (52.5 d) compared to the Control group (79.5 d), but the distributions of the 2 groups were not found to differ significantly (P =.109). Player surveys indicated they felt the brace to be comfortable or very comfortable, with better freedom of movement than other braces and the same freedom of movement as wearing no brace. All players reported wearing the brace to be the same or better experience as ankle taping. Discussion: These preliminary results indicate that the adaptive ankle brace is at least as effective as ankle taping for providing external support during the rehabilitation phase following acute lateral ankle sprain and suggest it may be a more effective ankle support solution in terms of patient compliance than conventional bracing or taping. Background: Digital health interventions are a promising method for delivering timely support to underresourced family caregivers. The uptake of digital health interventions among caregivers may be improved by engaging caregivers in participatory design (PD). In recent years, there has been a shift toward conducting PD remotely, which may enable participation by previously hard-to-reach groups. However, little is known regarding how best to facilitate engagement in remote PD among family caregivers. Objective: This study aims to (1) understand the context, quality, and outcomes of family caregivers' engagement experiences in remote PD and (2) learn which aspects of the observed PD approach facilitated engagement or need to be improved. Methods: We analyzed qualitative and quantitative data from evaluation and reflection surveys and interviews completed by research and community partners (family caregivers) across 4 remote PD studies. Studies focused on building digital health interventions for family caregivers. For each study, community partners met with research partners for 4 to 5 design sessions across 6 months. After each session, partners completed an evaluation survey. In 1 of the 4 studies, research and community partners completed a reflection survey and interview. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize quantitative evaluation and reflection survey data, while reflexive thematic analysis was used to understand qualitative data. Results: In 62.9% (83/132) of evaluations across projects 1-3, participants described the session as "very effective." In 74% (28/38) of evaluations for project 4, participants described feeling "extremely satisfied" with the session. Qualitative data relating to the engagement context identified that the identities of partners, the technological context of remote PD, and partners' understanding of the project and their role all influenced engagement. Within the domain of engagement quality, relationship-building and co-learning; satisfaction with prework, design activities, time allotted, and the final prototype; and inclusivity and the distribution of influence contributed to partners' experience of engagement. Outcomes of engagement included partners feeling an ongoing interest in the project after its conclusion, gratitude for participation, and a sense of meaning and self-esteem. Conclusions: These results indicate high satisfaction with remote PD processes and few losses specific to remote PD. The results also demonstrate specific ways in which processes can be changed to improve partner engagement and outcomes. Community partners should be involved from study inception in defining the problem to be solved, the approach used, and their roles within the project. Throughout the design process, online tools may be used to check partners' satisfaction with design processes and perceptions of inclusivity and power-sharing. Emphasis should be placed on increasing the psychosocial benefits of engagement (eg, sense of community and purpose) and increasing opportunities to participate in disseminating findings and in future studies. Background: As Alzheimer disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD) progress, individuals increasingly require assistance from unpaid, informal caregivers to support them in activities of daily living. These caregivers may experience high levels of financial, mental, and physical strain associated with providing care. CareVirtue is a web-based tool created to connect and support multiple individuals across a care network to coordinate care activities and share important information, thereby reducing care burden. Objective: This study aims to use a computational informatics approach to thematically analyze open text written by AD/ADRD caregivers in the CareVirtue platform. We then explore relationships between identified themes and use patterns. Methods: We analyzed journal posts (n=1555 posts; 170,212 words) generated by 51 unique users of the CareVirtue platform. Latent themes were identified using a neural network approach to topic modeling. We calculated a sentiment score for each post using the Valence Aware Dictionary and Sentiment Reasoner. We then examined relationships between identified topics; semantic sentiment; and use-related data, including post word count and self-reported mood. Results: We identified 5 primary topics in users' journal posts, including descriptions of specific events, professional and medical care, routine daily activities, nighttime symptoms, and bathroom/toileting issues. This 5-topic model demonstrated adequate fit to the data, having the highest coherence score (0.41) among those tested. We observed group differences across these topics in both word count and semantic sentiment. Further, posts made in the evening were both longer and more semantically positive than other times of the day. Conclusions: Users of the CareVirtue platform journaled about a variety of different topics, including generalized experiences and specific behavioral symptomology of AD/ADRD, suggesting a desire to record and share broadly across the care network. Posts were the most positive in the early evening when the tool was used habitually, rather than when writing about acute events or symptomology. Consumption of the same products in the west has increased. Policy instruments, used with positive effects nationally, have become more or less ineffective or irrelevant. Some environmental problems related to production practices have been relocated to other countries, while the import of products involves new environmental and health impacts for consumers. In integrated product policy, including phases of design, production, distribution, consumption and waste management, the possibility of using policy instruments to address designing and producing actors are highly affected by globalisation. The globalisation of production is a challenge for environmental policy as regards defining policy instruments with international validity. Case studies, the integrated product chain for batteries, clothing and meat, are used analysing globalisation and policy instruments. The empirical materials include legislation, propositions, protocols and interviews with officials in ministries, authorities, production and distribution organisations.

Actors are persons or corporations deciding upon the fate of the product. The policy instruments refer to well-known measures like information, economic or administrative measures. The theoretical part of the study discuss governance and the role of policy instruments influencing actors' decisions and behaviour during the lifecycle of a product. The empirical part of the study analyses the use of policy instruments addressed to actors involved in the lifecycle of batteries and to what extent policy instruments affect actors' behaviour.

Background: Care partners (family and friends) for people living with Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias (ADRD) often provide care within a care network of both informal (e.g. family, friends) and formal (e.g. home aides, respite care) supports. Care networks can improve care but are often associated with increased communication and coordination demands. Technology interventions have potential to support care networks, but evidence is limited. This study explored care network use of a shared communication platform to identify care partner's perceptions of the platform's usefulness. Method: This study used data from a feasibility trial for CareVirtue, a web application designed to support care partners in storing and sharing information with members of their network. Fifty‐one care networks comprised of a primary care partner and other network members (N = 61) in California and Wisconsin used CareVirtue for 60 days and completed a post‐trial semi‐structured interview. This analysis focused on CareVirtue's journal feature, which allows users to share daily experiences through written posts published to a newsfeed that care network members can view and comment on. We exported the text of these journal entries and conducted team‐based content analysis. We performed a thematic analysis on interview transcripts to identify themes related to the journal's usefulness. Result: In total 2,535 journal entries from 51 primary care partners (75% female, mean age = 60 years old, 55% children of care recipient, 40% spouses) and their care network were analyzed. Journal entries: We identified four categories of communication and coordination activities: 1) information acquisition in which care network members sought updates; 2) information sharing including tracking behaviors, symptoms, and daily activities; 3) strategy development in which care network members used two‐way communication to co‐create care solutions; and 4) feedback including affirmation, empathy, gratitude, confirmation, and information exchange. Interviews: We identified three journal usefulness themes: individual level usefulness including tracking information and therapeutic benefits; network level usefulness including facilitating collaboration; and relational usefulness including increased situational awareness and feeling seen as a care partner. Conclusion: The CareVirtue journal facilitated communication across the care network and also enabled self‐exploration, heightened awareness, and collaborative strategy development among the care network. Byline: Annika Carlsson-Kanyama, Anna-Lisa Linden Changes in Swedish food consumption patterns during recent decades are studied, together with some possible future changes of importance for increasing resource efficiency. The increased consumption of meat and a more global food supply have contributed negatively. An increased interface with foreign food cultures through travelling and immigration are the main causes of these consumption changes. Meat consumption may decline while the consumption of organic and convenience foods may increase in the future. Environmental and health reasons will be the main causes, together with an increased acceptance among younger people of food cultures with vegetarian ingredients. Lack of time and skills for cooking and an increased supply of convenience foods are other causes. The environmental consequences of changes in food cultures may be beneficial, but that depends partly on the locations of food industries and producers as well as on methods used in farming and the food industry.

Background. Human factors research involves the study of work system interactions, physician workload, cognitive effort, and performance. This pilot study incorporated a human factor approach and other surgery-based metrics to assess cognitive workload among plastic surgeons during elective plastic surgery breast procedures. Methods. In this prospective study of plastic surgery breast procedures over a 3-month period, surgeon and patient demographics and procedural details were collected. The lead surgeon assessed each procedure using a validated workload questionnaire (National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index [NASA-TLX]) that included 6 subscales (ie, mental, physical, temporal demand, performance, effort, and frustration), a question on distraction, and their expectation of procedural difficulty. Results. Fifty-seven cases were included in this study. Surgical duration had a positive correlation with increased mental demand (P < .001), physical demand (P < .001), and degree of distractions (P < .001). Free flap reconstruction, breast reduction, and transgender mastectomy had the highest average mental, physical demands, and perceived effort. Bilateral cases had significantly higher workload than unilateral ones (P = .002). NASA-TLX scores between immediate and delayed reconstructions were comparable, but delayed cases had higher degree of distractions (P = .04). There was a strong correlation between degree of distractions and increased mental workload (R = 0.68; P < .001), increased physical demand (R =0.61; P < .001), and increased temporal demand (R = 0.78; P < .001). More difficult procedures were associated with greater procedural duration than those rated as difficult as expected or less difficult than expected (P = .02). Conclusions. These preliminary data demonstrated multiple factors that may influence and govern perceived physician workload and may provide insight for targeted quality improvement to plan procedures safely and effectively.
