In our society, work is generally considered central to citizenship and individual well-being. However, paid employment is often out of reach for individuals with mental illness. The Clubhouse model is a community-based rehabilitation programme that therefore offers people with mental illness the possibility to enjoy some social advantages of work. However, the status of the day-to-day Clubhouse activities as “work” is a matter of discursive contestation. Drawing on 29 meetings of a Clubhouse rehabilitation group as data, and using conversation analysis and discourse analysis as methods, this study examines two competing interpretive repertoires that are systematically manifested in this context: the capitalist “paid work” repertoire used by Clubhouse clients and the more flexible “productive activity” repertoire used by support workers. The adoption of these two repertoires reflects two competing discursive agendas, which define the scope of mental health rehabilitation and the role of the client in their own rehabilitation process in distinct ways. From this perspective, the support workers' central institutional task is essentially of a discursive and ideological nature—exposing the clients to new ways of talking about their lives with reference to work. publishedVersion

Osallistumiseen kasvattaminen on keskeinen, läpi elämän jatkuva sosialisaation haaste. Konkreettinen osallistumiseen kasvattamisen keino on tekstin yhteinen tuottaminen kasvokkaisessa vuorovaikutuksessa, mitä tässä tapaustutkimuksessa tarkastelemme kahdessa ryhmässä: 1) uusiin työkäytänteisiin keskittyvässä henkilöstökoulutuksessa ja 2) työelämään valmentavassa mielenterveyskuntoutuksessa. Tutkimusmenetelmänä on keskustelunanalyysi, jonka avulla yhtäältä selvitämme, miten osallistumista pyritään edistämään tekstin yhteisen tuottamisen avulla. Toisaalta tarkastelemme tämän tavoitteen toteutumista käytännössä kysyen, millaisia osallistumisen mahdollisuuksia ja rajoitteita tekstin avulla osallistaminen faktuaalisesti tuo vuorovaikutukseen. Analyysimme viittaa osallistamispyrkimysten ja todellisen osallistumisen väliseen jännitteeseen. Henkilöstökoulutuksessa tekstin yhteinen tuottaminen näyttää edistävän osallistumista, mikä ilmenee osallistujien tavassa jatkaa toistensa aloittamia lauseita sisällöllisesti ja syntaktisesti sekä pyrkiä yhteistoiminnassa saattamaan ajatukset dokumentointikelpoiseen muotoon. Kirjoittamistoiminnan kannalta tuotettavan tekstin yhteisen omistajuuden säilyttäminen on silti haasteellista, mikä asettaa osallistumiselle myös rajoitteita. Mielenterveyskuntoutuksessa tavoitteiden ja käytännön välinen jännite on erityisen selkeä, mikä haastaakin kehittämään tässä kontekstissa paremmin toimivia yhteiskirjoittamisen käytäntöjä. Yhteisöllisten tekstikäytänteiden hallinta ei synny vain kirjoitusmahdollisuuden tarjoamisesta, vaan sitä on tuettava pedagogisin ratkaisuin.

Negotiations about the body – a CA study of pain and effort in personal training and massage Even though physical pain and sensations are a common human experience, they are subjective, difficult or even impossible to express and share with others. In this study, we investigate expressions of pain during ongoing physical activity, here personal training and massage, and describe how the participants negotiate and make meaning of them in interaction. The data was extracted from a 14-hour corpus of Swedish-spoken interactions in preventive health care activities in Sweden and Finland. We demonstrate how participants create common understanding of the clients’ experienced pain by evaluating it in relation to the physical activity. Our results show that pain usually is treated as avoidable or as an indication of the need to correct the activity. In special cases, such as in cases of pain caused by prior sessions of physical training, the participants treat pain as acceptable. There are also cases where we see an orientation towards pain as a sign of accomplished effort, and therefore worth aiming at in this context. In our study, the body and performance of one of the participants are in focus of the physical activity, and also in focus of the verbal interaction. Interactional work is done by the experts and lay persons respectively to handle this socially delicate situation. The study contributes to the field of embodied interaction and provides new knowledge about preventive healthcare as a phenomenon in modern society.
