Abstract

This article emerges from an approach to transformative learning where students are challenged to explore taken-for-granted assumptions about their experiences in the world. We outline the 6-Part Story Method (6PSM), which uses abstract images to provide a structured storytelling process that enables reflexive learning. This is documented through conversations between a university teacher and three Masters students about the method used in their course on practical ethics in process consulting. Using individual stories that emerged from a common set of cards, we illustrate how the method enabled us to critically explore our practices as teacher and student consultants.

31. Widening the Angle: Film as Alternative Pedagogy for Wellness in Indigenous Youth

Abstract

Indigenous youth face numerous challenges in terms of their well-being. Colonization enforced land and cultural loss, fractured relationships, and restricted the use of the imagination and agentic capacity (Colonial policies, structures, and approaches in education have been detrimental to Indigenous youth (Nardozi, 2013). Many First Nations leaders, community members, and youth have expressed a need for a wider range of activities that move beyond Western models of knowledge and learning (Goulet & Goulet, 2015). School curricula in Indigenous communities are incorporating alternative pedagogical tools, such as the arts, that not only allow youth to explore and express their realities and interests but that also offer them holistic ways of learning and knowing (Yuen et al., 2013). This article describes a participatory arts research project which featured film production and was delivered in the context of a grade 10 Communications Media course. The research took place at a First Nations high school in a Neehithuw (Woodland Cree) community in northern Saskatchewan. This article highlights the content of the films produced, the benefits of the filmmaking experience, and the challenges faced by the teacher and students during the process.

37. Reflections in a Maze of Mirrors: Exploring Our Emerging Identities as Arts Educators.

Abstract

In this paper, two arts education instructors engage in a dialogue about their emerging identities to further knowledge for pre-service educators in teacher education programs. Thus, the paper provides a forum about the conduct and theory of arts-based research in education. It also provides examples and critiques of theories of practice and knowing in arts education. In the first part of the paper, "An Autobiographical Prelude," one of the instructors explores the tensions and complexities inherent in the transformation of one's experience as a performing musician into a music educator. In the second part of the paper, "Metaxic Journeys in Drama Facilitation," the other instructor describes how the educator has facilitated workshops for the past 14 years based on Augusto Boal's"Theater of the Oppressed," a popular theater approach that investigates relationships by embracing and recognizing the tacit and implicit knowledge emerging in the performance process. 38. The Spiralling Journeys of the Been-Being-Becoming-Imag(e)ining Drama Facilitator.

Abstract

A study-in-progress is examining the multiple and fluid identities in one person's "been-being-becoming-imagining" as a facilitator in transformative drama--for example, as researcher, facilitator, participant, observer, audience. The inquiry is a recursive and spiraling process. The goals and procedure arise through the research undertaken in conversation with experiences remembered and reconsidered. Narratives of the researcher's life as facilitator read through different forms and voices help draw his attention to his practice. By exploring these his identity can begin to be seen in the flux and flow of a spiral--no static "I" is written about nor is one "experience" focused on. Theater plays with forms of text and languages. Writing about the process of coming to know an identity-in-process as a drama facilitator is an exploration of how the researcher is becoming what he is continually becoming. The processes of self discovery can only happen if both facilitator and participants are engaged in it. (Contains 15 references.) (NKA)

In this article, we take a strength-based approach to understand how applied theatre as a vehicle provides opportunities for embodied voices to have a positive influence on the well-being, and attitudes to health, of young people who have been "pushed" to the margins. We begin by explaining the concepts of well-being, embodiment and embodied voices, and applied theatre. Following this we explore an example of a theatre project developed in Canada with Indigenous youth to illustrate how the well-being of those who might be termed "marginalised" in this context, is enhanced through a process of embodied reflexivity using applied theatre approaches. Finally, we discuss challenges with this approach to working with "marginalised" youth, and also present some recommendations for professionals using applied theatre for co-creation with "marginalised" youth for their well-being. We share how our research led us to conclude that a commitment to the arts as a fundamental and core process for developing wellness and wellbeing is necessary. This would mean professionals associated with any programmes or projects generated to explore embodied work with young people need see the arts as a philosophical underpinning, rather than as just an additional activity that can be inserted into any programme.

Abstract

Despite the significant amount of literature dedicated to ethical and methodological issues related to youth engagement and youth participation in research, few studies have examined how young people themselves view and give meaning to their own participation in research projects that employ creative practices that affect them. This article explores the perspectives of youth with regard to their participation in a research project. Drawing upon the voices and perspectives of youth affected by the genocide in Rwanda, we trace young people's views on ethical issues, particularly in relation to harm, process and power in research. We highlight some of the ethical challenges and opportunities in participatory research and practice with young people and discuss implications based on their thoughtful insights and reflections. Abstract

This article emerges from the assumption that, as transformative learners, practitioners can use storytelling to work through challenging experiences. We used the 6-Part-Story Method (6PSM) to aid in the context of reflective and reflexive practice. We explore one student’s experience in a master’s-level course that introduces, through experiential learning, process consulting to students. By using storytelling to explore her work with a client, the practitioner shares how the particular method enabled her to look at her own practice. We outline how the 6PSM as a structured storytelling process enables student consultants to reflexively understand the clients they work with and enable them to gain greater professional and personal self-development.

49. Click, Clack, Move: Facilitation of the Arts as Transformative Pedagogy

Abstract

This article explores the arts' potential to transform the relationships between students and teachers, so that education becomes an "as if" world, where education is an act of social justice. Interweaving themes from the children's book "Click Clack Moo, Cows that Type" with theories of transformative pedagogy and their own teaching practices in Canada and Scotland, the authors look at the metonymic way in which the children's story, as a form of performative writing, explores democracy, leadership, and group dynamics. Drawing from a concept of social justice as being a multi- or interdisciplinary experience that enables individuals to make sense of the social system around them, we explore how we have embraced transformative pedagogy in working with groups. In the process of the workshop, a shared space is opened up, where the exploration of stories can lead all participants to engage in transformative dialogue through visual images, movement, sound and physicality.
