Abstract Background Pulmonary abscesses resulting from epididymitis caused by extended spectrum β-lactamase-producing hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (ESBL-hvKp) in a nondiabetic patient are extremely uncommon. The infection caused by this disseminated drug-resistant bacteria, which is generally considered an intractable case, poses a potential challenge in clinical practice. Case presentation In this case report, we present the clinical course of a 71-year-old male patient with epididymitis, who subsequently developed cough and dyspnea following anti-infection treatment. Imaging examinations revealed severe pneumonia and pulmonary abscess. The infection of ESBL-hvKp in the epididymis led to bacteremia and subsequent lung lesions. Due to poor response to anti-infection therapy, the patient required an extended duration of anti-infection treatment and ultimately chosed to discontinue treatment. Conclusions Acute epididymitis caused by ESBL-hvKP infection can result in the spread of the infection through the bloodstream, leading to severe pneumonia and lung abscess. Given the critical condition of the patient, even with active anti-infection treatment, there is a risk of treatment failure or potentially fatal outcomes.

ObjectiveTo investigate the clinical characteristics and risk factors of patients with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection complicated with cardiovascular diseases.MethodsA retrospective analysis of general clinical data was conducted on patients with SARS-CoV-2 omicron infection complicated with hypertension, coronary heart disease, and heart failure admitted to one hospital in Guangdong Province from December 1, 2022, to February 28, 2023. Clinical symptoms, laboratory tests, imaging examinations, treatment, and clinical outcomes were collected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the risk factors for mortality in patients with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection complicated with cardiovascular diseases. ROC curves were drawn to evaluate the predictive value of CRP, D-dimer, and CK-MB in predicting the risk of death.ResultsA total of 364 confirmed cases were included, divided into the asymptomatic group, mild to moderate group, and severe to critically ill group based on the symptoms of COVID-19. ObjectiveTo analyze the clinical characteristics and prognostic impacts of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron infection among cancer inpatients during the December 2022 – February 2023 surge, in order to provide scientific evidence for clinical treatment and prevention and control measures.MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical features, prognosis, and vaccination status of cancer in-patients infected with the Omicron variant during the COVID-19 pandemic of December 2022 – February 2023.ResultsA total of 137 cancer inpatients were included in the study, with a median age of 61 years, and 75 patients (54.74%) were male. The main symptoms were cough (69 cases, 50.36%), expectoration (60 cases, 43.80%), and fever (53 cases, 39.69%). Chest CT examination revealed bilateral pneumonia in 47 cases (34.31%, 47/137) and pleural effusion in 24 cases (17.52%, 24/137). Among the cancer patients, 116 cases (84.67%, 116/137) had solid tumors, and 21 cases (15.33%, 21/137) had hematologic malignancies, with the main types being breast cancer (25 cases, 18.25%) and lung cancer (24 cases, 17.52%). Among the cancer patients, 46 cases (33.58%) were asymptomatic, 81 cases (59.12%) had mild disease, 10 cases (7.30%) had severe infection, and 8 cases (5.84%) died. A total of 91 patients (66.42%) had been vaccinated, with 58 patients (42.34%) receiving three doses. Multivariate analysis showed that cerebral infarction and hypoproteinemia were risk factors for death from COVID-19 infection.ConclusionCancer patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron typically exhibit mild disease manifestations, but some cancer patients infected with the Omicron variant might progress to severe illness, and even death, necessitating close monitoring and attention during the early stages of infection. Additionally, the presence of cerebral infarction and hypoproteinemia significantly increases the risk of death.

Background Programmed death 1 (PD-1) inhibitor demonstrated durable antitumor activity in advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), but the clinical benefit of perioperative immunotherapy in ESCC remains unclear. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) combined with the PD-1 inhibitor toripalimab in patients with resectable ESCC.Methods From July 2020 to July 2022, 21 patients with histopathologically confirmed thoracic ESCC and clinical staged as cT1-4aN1-2M0/cT3-4aN0M0 were enrolled. Eligible patients received radiotherapy (23 fractions of 1.8 Gy, 5 fractions a week) with concurrent chemotherapy of paclitaxel/cisplatin (paclitaxel 45 mg/m2 and cisplatin 25 mg/m2) on days 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and two cycles of toripalimab 240 mg every 3 weeks after nCRT for neoadjuvant therapy before surgery, four cycles of toripalimab 240 mg every 3 weeks for adjuvant therapy after surgery. The primary endpoint was the major pathological response (MPR) rate. The secondary endpoints were safety and survival outcomes.Results A total of 21 patients were included, of whom 20 patients underwent surgery, 1 patient refused surgery and another patient was confirmed adenocarcinoma after surgery. The MPR and pathological complete response (pCR) rates were 78.9% (15/19) and 47.4% (9/19) for surgery ESCC patients. 21 patients (100.0%) had any-grade treatment-related adverse events, with the most common being lymphopenia (100.0%), leukopenia (85.7%), neutropenia (52.4%). 14 patients (66.7%) had adverse events of grade 3 with the most common being lymphopenia (66.7%). The maximum standardized uptake value and total lesion glycolysis of positron emission tomography/CT after neoadjuvant therapy well predicted the pathological response. The peripheral CD4+%, CD3+HLA-DR+/CD3+%, CD8+HLA-DR+/CD8+%, and IL-6 were significant differences between pCR and non-pCR groups at different times during neoadjuvant therapy. Three patients had tumor relapse and patients with MPR have longer disease-free survival than non-MPR patients.Conclusions nCRT combined with perioperative toripalimab is effective and safe for locally advanced resectable ESCC. Long-term survival outcomes remain to be determined.Trial registration number NCT04437212.

Baicalein (BE) has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. It has also been reported able to improve cerebral blood circulation in brain ischemic injury. However, its chronic efficacy and metabolomics in Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain unknown. In this study, BE at 80 mg/kg was administrated through the oral route in J20 AD transgenic mice aged from aged 4 months to aged 10 months. Metabolic- and neurobehavioural phenotyping was done before and after 6 months' treatment to evaluate the drug efficacy and the relevant mechanisms. Meanwhile, molecular docking was used to study the binding affinity of BE and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) which is related to neuronal injury. The open field test showed that BE could suppress hyperactivity in J20 mice and increase the frequency of the target quadrant crossing in the Morris Water Maze test. More importantly, BE restored cerebral blood flow back to the normal level after the chronic treatment. A 1H NMR-based metabolomics study showed that BE treatment could restore the tricarboxylic acid cycle in plasma. And such a treatment could suppress oxidative stress, inhibit neuroinflammation, alleviate mitochondrial dysfunction, improve neurotransmission, and restore amino homeostasis via starch and sucrose metabolism and glycolipid metabolism in the cortex and hippocampus, which could affect the behavioural and cerebral blood flow. These findings showed that BE is a potential therapeutic agent for AD.

Background: Adolescent-specific ADHD self-report screening measures can greatly increase the likelihood of correct diagnosis and timely treatment of ADHD in adolescents. This study provides preliminary evidence for evaluating the reliability and validity of the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale-Revised (ASRS-R) in a school-based sample of Chinese adolescents. Methods: The ASRS-R and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) were administered to 867 adolescents aged 12 to 16 years (M[subscript age] = 13.08 years). Construct validity was assessed using correlation analysis of the ASRS-R with the SDQ. Moreover, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), internal consistency, retest reliability, and measurement invariance of the scales were examined by gender. Results: CFA showed a two-dimensional factor structure of the ASRS-R, and the model fitted the data well ([chi-squared]/df = 4.370, RMSEA = 0.062, TLI = 0.932, CFI = 0.940, GFI = 0.927, AGFI = 0.907, and SRMR = 0.038). The ASRS-R scale was invariant across gender and had satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.934) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.874). The construct validity, as calculated using the SDQ, was also acceptable. Conclusion: The ASRS-R can be a psychometrically reliable self-report instrument and provide preliminary support as a simple tool for identifying ADHD symptoms in Chinese adolescents. The findings provide evidence for extending the application of the ASRS, previously limited to adults, to the adolescent populations.

PurposeNeoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) is a standard treatment option for patients with stage III oesophageal cancer. Approximately 30% of oesophageal cancer patients will have a pathological complete response (pCR) after nCRT. However, available clinical methods cannot accurately predict pCR for patients. We aimed to find more indicators that could be used to predict the pathological response to nCRT.MethodA total of 84 patients with stage III oesophageal squamous cell cancer were enrolled in this study. Ten patients failed to have surgery as a result of progressive disease (PD). Among the patients who underwent surgery, 32 patients had a pathologic complete response (pCR), whereas 42 patients showed no or partial response (npCR) after nCRT. Routine blood test results and lymphocyte subset assessments before and after nCRT were retrospectively analysed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify independent predictors of the clinical curative effect of nCRT. Eventually, nomograms were established for predicting the PD and pCR rates.ResultsThe numbers of lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, Th lymphocytes, Ts lymphocytes, and NK cells and the percentages of B lymphocytes and NK cells were decreased significantly after nCRT (P < 0.0001), whereas the percentages of T lymphocytes and Ts lymphocytes increased (P < 0.0001). Univariate analysis showed that age, the length of the lesion, the level of haemoglobin before nCRT, and the amount of change in haemoglobin were related to PD, and the percentage of NK cells after nCRT was related to pCR. Multivariate logistic analysis demonstrated that the length of the lesion, the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) before nCRT, and the amount of change in haemoglobin were independent predictors of PD, whereas the percentage of NK cells after nCRT was an independent predictor of pCR.ConclusionLymphocyte subsets changed dramatically during nCRT, and these changes together with baseline and posttreatment lymphocyte subsets have predictive value in determining the response to nCRT for oesophageal cancer.

Abstract Background Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) followed by surgery is a currently widely used strategy for locally advanced esophageal cancer (EC). However, the conventional imaging methods have certain deficiencies in the evaluation and prediction of the efficacy of nCRT. This study aimed to explore the value of functional imaging in predicting the response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) in locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Methods Fifty-four patients diagnosed with locally advanced ESCC from August 2017 to September 2019 and treated with nCRT were retrospectively analyzed. DW-MRI scanning was performed before nCRT, at 10–15 fractions of radiotherapy, and 4–6 weeks after the completion of nCRT. 18F-FDG PET/CT scans were performed before nCRT and 4–6 weeks after the completion of nCRT. These 18F-FDG PET/CT and DW-MRI parameters and relative changes were compared between patients with pathological complete response (pCR) and non-pCR. Results A total of 8 of 54 patients (14.8%) were evaluated as disease progression in the preoperative assessment. The remaining forty-six patients underwent operations, and the pathological assessments of the surgical resection specimens demonstrated pathological complete response (pCR) in 10 patients (21.7%) and complete response of primary tumor (pCR-T) in 16 patients (34.8%). The change of metabolic tumor volume (∆MTV) and change of total lesion glycolysis (∆TLG) were significantly different between patients with pCR and non-pCR. The SUVmax-Tpost, MTV-Tpost, and TLG-Tpost of esophageal tumors in 18F-FDG PET/CT scans after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and the ∆ SUVmax-T and ∆MTV-T were significantly different between pCR-T versus non-pCR-T patients. The esophageal tumor apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) increased after nCRT; the ADCduring, ADCpost and ∆ADCduring were significantly different between pCR-T and non-pCR-T groups. ROC analyses showed that the model that combined ADCduring with TLG-Tpost had the highest AUC (0.914) for pCR-T prediction, with 90.0% and 86.4% sensitivity and specificity, respectively. Conclusion 18F-FDG PET/CT is useful for re-staging after nCRT and for surgical decision. Integrating parameters of 18F-FDG PET/CT and DW-MRI can identify pathological response of primary tumor to nCRT more accurately in ESCC.

BackgroundRadiotherapy plays an important effect on the standard therapy of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). However, the efficacy of the therapy is limited and a few patients do not achieve satisfactory treatment results due to the existence of radiation resistance. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the potential predictive biomarkers and treatment targets for ESCC.MethodsWe performed the whole-exome sequencing to determine the germline and somatic mutations in ESCC. Functional enrichment and pathway-based protein-protein interaction analyses were used to ascertain potential regulatory networks. Cell survival and cell death after treatment with radiotherapy were determined by CCK-8 and LDH release assays in ESCC cells. The correlations of NOTCH1 and tumor immune infiltration were also analyzed in ESCC.ResultsOur results showed that 344 somatic and 65 germline differentially mutated genes were detected to be radiosensitivity-related loci. The tumor mutational burdens (TMB) or microsatellite instability (MSI) were not significantly correlated with the response to radiotherapy in ESCC patients. Pathway-based protein-protein interaction analyses implied several hub genes with most nodes (such as PIK3CA, NOTCH1, STAT3 and KDR). The in vitro studies showed that the knockdown of NOTCH1 inhibited cell survival and rendered more cell death after the treatment with radiotherapy in ESCC cells, while NOTCH1 overexpression had the opposite effects. Moreover, NOTCH1, frequently up-regulated in ESCC, was negatively correlated with activated B cell and immature dendritic cell in ESCC. High expression of NOTCH1 was accompanied with the low levels of some immunotherapy-related cells, including CD8(+) T cells and NK cells.ConclusionsThese results indicate the differences of the germline mutations and somatic mutations between the radiosensitive and radioresistence groups in ESCC and imply that NOTCH1 plays important roles in regulating the radiosensitivity of ESCC. The findings might provide the biomarkers and potential treatment targets for improving the sensitivity to radiotherapy in ESCC.

Background: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of essential enzymes for alcohol metabolism ADH1B, ADH1C, and ALDH2 are commonly regarded as genetic biomarkers for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) susceptibility. However, there have not been any reports on relations between SNPs of these genes and the prognosis of postoperative radiotherapy in ESCC. The current study aimed to understand the associations between gene variants of alcohol metabolism and adjuvant radiotherapy’s prognosis in ESCC.Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 110 ESCC patients from our institution who received adjuvant radiotherapy after surgery. The SNPs of ADH1B rs1229984, ADH1C rs1789924, and ALDH2 rs671 were detected by Sanger sequencing using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor samples. A nomogram was drawn based on prognostic factors associated with overall survival (OS).Results: ADH1C rs1789924 (C>T) was associated with poor DFS and OS in ESCC patients undergoing adjuvant radiotherapy. Multivariate analysis showed that ADH1C rs1789924 (C>T) was one of the independent prognosis factors of DFS and OS. However, the genotypes of ADH1B SNP rs1229984 and ALDH2 rs671 were not associated with differences in the PFS and OS of these patients. Compared with the AJCC staging system, the nomogram containing the ADH1C genotype can more effectively and accurately predict the survival time of ESCC after surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy.Conclusion: ADH1C rs1789924 might be a prognostic genetic biomarker for ESCC patients undergoing surgery and postoperative radiotherapy.

ObjectiveStage I and II cervical cancer with pelvic and/or para-aortic lymph node (LN) metastases are upstaged to stage IIIC under the new FIGO 2018 staging system, and radical chemoradiotherapy was recommended. But heterogeneity in outcome existed in this group of patients. We conducted this retrospective analysis to evaluate the heterogeneity of these patients and tried to provide a more detailed classification to reflect the prognosis and guide the treatment. We also evaluated the efficacy and toxicity of surgery followed by sequential chemoradiotherapy in this cohort.MethodsEarly-stage cervical cancer with LN involvement that had radical hysterectomy followed by sequential chemoradiotherapy were retrospectively analyzed. Survival analyses were conducted to identify the prognostic factors.ResultsA total of 242 patients were included in the study; 64 (26.4%) patients had treatment failure, and 51 (21.1%) died. Pathology, T stage, the number of pathologic LN (pLN), and neoadjuvant chemotherapy or not were independent prognostic factors for disease-free survival and overall survival (OS). Patients with T1N < 3 pLN had significantly better survival than T2N < 3 pLN/T1-2 N≥ 3 pLN, with failure rates of 11.6% and 35.8% in each group; and 5 year OS was 92% and 62%, respectively (P = 0.000). About 1.5% of the patients discontinued radiotherapy, and 14.1% had G3-4 hematological toxic effects during radiotherapy; 1.7% developed G2-3 lower limb edema, and 2.9% developed severe urinary toxicity.ConclusionNodal involvement alone is inadequate as the sole pathologic factor to predict survival in early-stage cervical cancer. The combination of tumor and node subcategory provides better prognostic discrimination.

Background/Aims: Acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) is the most common reason for outpatient physician office visits. Although powerful and significant in the treatment of infections, antibiotics used for ARTI inappropriately have been an important contributor to antibiotic resistance. We previously reported that Shufeng Jiedu Capsule (SJC) can effectively amplify anti-inflammatory signaling during infection. In this study, we aimed to systematically explore its composition and the mechanism of its effects in ARTI. Methods: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PAK) strain was used to generate a mouse model of ARTI, which were then treated with different drugs or compounds to determine the corresponding anti-inflammatory roles. High-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight-tandem mass spectrometry. was conducted to detect the chemical compounds in SJC. RNAs from the lung tissues of mice were prepared for microarray analysis to reveal globally altered genes and the pathways involved after SJC treatment. Results: SJC significantly inhibited the expression and secretion of inflammatory factors from PAK-induced mouse lung tissues or lipopolysaccharide-induced peritoneal macrophages. Verbenalin, one of the bioactive compounds identified in SJC, also showed notable anti-inflammatory effects. Microarray data revealed numerous differentially expressed genes among the different treatment groups; here, we focused on studying the role of GPR18. We found that the anti-inflammatory role of verbenalin was attenuated in GPR18 knockout mice compared with wild-type mice, although no statistically significant difference was observed in the untreated PAK-induced mice types. Conclusion: Our data not only showed the chemical composition of SJC, but also demonstrated that verbenalin was a significant anti-inflammatory compound, which may function through GPR18.

Accumulating evidence suggests that disruptions in brain energy metabolism may be a key player in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Pioglitazone (PIO) has been found to exert beneficial effects on metabolic dysfunction in many AD preclinical studies. However, limited success in clinical trials remains an obstacle to its development for the treatment of AD. PIO’s poor brain penetration was often cited as a contributing factor to the lack of clinical benefit. In this study, we prepared PIO-loaded poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles and administered them as suspended nanoparticles via nebulization. Preliminary investigation of drug distribution to the brain revealed comparatively reduced systemic exposure after administering PIO nanoparticles via the intranasal route. In vitro, extracellular flux analysis showed significantly raised spare respiratory capacity when cells were treated with low-dose PIO nanoparticles. Tg2576 transgenic mice treated with low-dose PIO nanoparticles over four months exhibited an overall trend of reduced hyperactivity in open field tests but did not show any visible effect on alternation rates in the Y-maze task. Subsequent 1H NMR-based metabolic profiling of their plasma and different brain regions revealed differences in metabolic profiles in the cerebellum, cortex, and hippocampus of Tg2576 mice after long-term PIO treatment, but not in their midbrain and plasma. In particular, the specificity of PIO’s treatment effects on perturbed amino acid metabolism was observed in the cortex of transgenic mice with increases in alanine and N-acetylaspartate levels, supporting the notion that PIO treatment exerts beneficial effects on impaired energy metabolism associated with AD. In conclusion, inhalation exposure to PIO nanoparticles presents an exciting opportunity that this drug could be administered intranasally at a much lower dose while achieving a sufficient level in the brain to elicit metabolic benefits at an early stage of AD but with reduced systemic exposure.

The aim of the present study was to develop tamsulosin hydrochloride sustained-release pellets using two-layered membrane techniques. Centrifugal granulator and fluidized-bed coater were employed to prepare drug-loaded pellets and to employ two-layered membrane coating respectively. The prepared pellets were evaluated for physicochemical characterization, subjected to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in vitro release of different pH. Different release models and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilized to analyze the release mechanism of Harnual® and home-made pellets. By comparing the dissolution profiles, the ratio and coating weight gain of Eudragit® NE30D and Eudragit® L30D55 which constitute the inside membrane were identified as 18:1 and 10%–11%. The coating amount of outside membrane containing Eudragit® L30D55 was determined to be 0.8%. The similarity factors (f2) of home-made capsule and commercially available product (Harnual®) were above 50 in different dissolution media. DSC studies confirmed that drug and excipients had good compatibility and SEM photographs showed the similarities and differences of coating surface between Harnual® and self-made pellets before and after dissolution. According to Ritger-Peppas model, the two dosage form had different release mechanism.

This systematic review aimed to investigate the role of technology as a solution in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP). A total of 49 articles published between 2004 and 2023 were examined to gather information on general aspects, methodology, technology implementation, learning outcomes, and limitations and solutions related to technology-enhanced learning strategies in SLP research. The study focused on identifying the target participants, technological approaches, and the effectiveness of technology in SLP. The analysis revealed that the majority of studies included graduate students and general participants, highlighting a need for further exploration of technology's impact on babies and older adults in the field of SLP. Various technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), robots, and artificial intelligence (AI) were investigated, with computer-based, web-based, and online multimedia environments being the most used technology environments. Limitations of previous studies were identified, and potential solutions and advantages were suggested for guiding future research. The findings can be used as a reference for researchers, practitioners, schools, associations, and policy-makers intending to conduct SLP studies or implement technology-enhanced SLP solutions. The identified limitations and proposed solutions can serve as a reference for improving future studies in this field.

Background: Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), Malaysia 2011 reported that the prevalence of smoking was highest among Malays male i.e., 24.6% (CI:22.1,27.3). The aim of this study was to evaluate the perception of a group of smokers towards various national anti-smoking initiatives as well as its association with age and education level. Methods: The study was conducted in a randomly selected pre-dominantly Malay settlement in Malaysia using a validated self-administered questionnaire. The national anti-smoking initiatives assessed were ‘anti-smoking campaign’, ‘labelling on cigarette pack’, ‘increment of cigarette price’, ‘smoke free zone policies’ and ‘Quit smoking clinic’ initiatives. Results: A total of 136 Malay male smokers participated in this study. The percentage of respondents agreeing with the questions asked were very low, ranging from only 5.9% to 24.3%, except for one i.e., 99.3% agreed that the information on cigarette packs can be trusted. Assessing the success of various types of national anti-smoking initiatives in helping smokers to quit, the percentage of those who agreed ranged between 17.6% - 24.3% and in helping to reduce numbers of cigarette smoked, the range was from 12.5% to 18.4%. There was a significant association between ‘increment of cigarette price’ initiative with level of education (P=0.02). Conclusion: The percentage of positive perceptions towards all anti-smoking efforts was low and perception towards ‘increment of cigarette price’ was associated with level of education. Methods: The ASRS-R and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) were administered to 867 adolescents aged 12 to 16 years (M age = 13.08 years). Construct validity was assessed using correlation analysis of the ASRS-R with the SDQ. Moreover, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), internal consistency, retest reliability, and measurement invariance of the scales were examined by gender. Results: CFA showed a two-dimensional factor structure of the ASRS-R, and the model fitted the data well (χ2/ df = 4.370, RMSEA = 0.062, TLI = 0.932, CFI = 0.940, GFI = 0.927, AGFI = 0.907, and SRMR = 0.038). The ASRS-R scale was invariant across gender and had satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha =.934) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient =.874). The construct validity, as calculated using the SDQ, was also acceptable. Conclusion: The ASRS-R can be a psychometrically reliable self-report instrument and provide preliminary support as a simple tool for identifying ADHD symptoms in Chinese adolescents. This systematic review aimed to investigate the role of technology as a solution in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP). A total of 49 articles published between 2004 and 2023 were examined to gather information on general aspects, methodology, technology implementation, learning outcomes, and limitations and solutions related to technology-enhanced learning strategies in SLP research. The study focused on identifying the target participants, technological approaches, and the effectiveness of technology in SLP. The analysis revealed that the majority of studies included graduate students and general participants, highlighting a need for further exploration of technology's impact on babies and older adults in the field of SLP. Various technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), robots, and artificial intelligence (AI) were investigated, with computer-based, web-based, and online multimedia environments being the most used technology environments. Limitations of previous studies were identified, and potential solutions and advantages were suggested for guiding future research. The findings can be used as a reference for researchers, practitioners, schools, associations, and policy-makers intending to conduct SLP studies or implement technology-enhanced SLP solutions. Currently, deep drilling operates under extreme conditions of high temperature and high pressure, demanding more from subterranean power motors. The all-metal positive displacement motor, known for its robust performance, is a critical choice for such drilling. The dimensions of the PDM are crucial for its performance output. To enhance this, optimization of the motor's profile using a genetic algorithm has been undertaken. The design process begins with the computation of the initial stator and rotor curves based on the equations for a screw cycloid. These curves are then refined using the least squares method for a precise fit. Following this, the PDM's mathematical model is optimized, and motor friction is assessed. The genetic algorithm process involves encoding variations and managing crossovers to optimize objective functions, including the isometric radius coefficient, eccentricity distance parameter, overflow area, and maximum slip speed. This optimization yields the ideal profile parameters that enhance the motor's output. Comparative analyses of the initial and optimized output characteristics were conducted, focusing on the effects of the isometric radius coefficient and overflow area on the motor's performance. Results indicate that the optimized motor's overflow area increased by 6.9%, while its rotational speed reduced by 6.58%. The torque, as tested by Infocus, saw substantial improvements of 38.8%. This optimization provides a theoretical foundation for improving the output characteristics of allmetal PDMs and supports the ongoing development and research of PDM technology. Drug addiction can cause severe damage to the human brain, leading to significant problems in cognitive processing, such as irritability, speech distortions, and exaggeration of negative stimuli. Speech plays a fundamental role in social interaction, including both the production and perception. The ability to perceive communicative functions conveyed through speech is crucial for successful interpersonal communication and the maintaining good social relationships. However, due to the limited number of previous studies, it remains unclear whether the cognitive disorder caused by drug addiction affects the perception of communicative function conveyed in Mandarin speech. To address this question, we conducted a perception experiment involving sixty male participants, including 25 heroin addicts and 35 healthy controls. The experiment aimed to examine the perception of three communicative functions (i.e., statement, interrogative, and imperative) under three background noise conditions (i.e., no noise, SNR [Signal to Noise Ratio] = 10, and SNR = 0). Eight target sentences were first recorded by two native Mandarin speakers for each of the three communicative functions. Each half was then combined with Gaussian White Noise under two background noise conditions (i.e., SNR = 10 and SNR = 0). Finally, 48 speech stimuli were included in the experiment with four options provided for perceptual judgment. The results showed that, under the three noise conditions, the average perceptual accuracies of the three communicative functions were 80.66% and 38% for the control group and the heroin addicts, respectively. Significant differences were found in the perception of the three communicative functions between the control group and the heroin addicts under the three noise conditions, except for the recognition of imperative under strong noise condition (i.e., SNR = 0). Moreover, heroin addicts showed good accuracy (around 50%) in recognizing imperative and poor accuracy (i.e., lower than the chance level) in recognizing interrogative. This paper not only fills the research gap in the perception of communicative functions in Mandarin speech among drug addicts but also enhances the understanding of the effects of drugs on speech perception and provides a foundation for the speech rehabilitation of drug addicts.
