Abstract

In this paper, we attempt to provide a semantic foundation for the role-related concepts in the RM-ODP. We believe that some theories of conceptual modelling may help us to provide a well-founded underpinning for these concepts, and to harmonize competing proposals for them. As a starting point of our effort, we study the definitions of Genilloud and Wegmann, and the proposed definition in the Working Document for the amendment of the standard as contributed by Linington.

Abstract

In this paper we argue that design concepts should represent relevant design patterns and implementation (middleware) constructs in a problem domain precisely and concisely. We claim that this follows logically fiom the role that design concepts play in the design process. Subsequently, we show the problems that arise if existing patterns and implementation constructs are not observed when developing design concepts. We focus our argument on concepts for interaction design and on the Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing.

Abstract

An RPC implementation is described which uses a small network of Transputers as a parallel front end processor to reduce communications delays. Parallel processing allows different aspects of the protocol support and parameter marshalling to be overlapped. Particular attention is paid to issues which affect the performance of the system. Some comparisons are drawn with the ANSAware distributed systems platform.
