1. Controlling Raman enhancement in particle-aperture hybrid nanostructures by interlayer spacing

Abstract

Here we show how surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) features can be fine-tuned in optically active substrates made of layered materials. To demonstrate this, we used DNA-assisted lithography (DALI) to create substrates with silver bowtie nanoparticle-aperture pairs and then coated the samples with rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules. By varying the spacing between the aperture and particle layer, we were able to control the strength of the interlayer coupling between the plasmon resonances of the apertures and those of the underlying bowtie particles. The changes in the resulting field enhancements were confirmed by recording the Raman spectra of R6G from the substrates, and the experimental findings were supported with finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations including reflection/extinction and near-field profiles., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

COVID-19 hastened a trend that was already ongoing before the pandemic outbreak: the progressively increasing use of distance and online teaching and learning, alongside with lectures and classes. The potentialities of online teaching allowed a didactic continuity that would have been impossible otherwise, and this approach is likely to be maintained even after COVID-19 related restrictions end. From these remarks, it immediately follows that it is of great importance that teachers, students and other personnel, such as technicians and program managers, possess digital skills devoted to education. In the context of security and defence, areas with a strong international vocation, these skills are even more valuable. This research investigates the impact of COVID-19 on education in these contexts: the changes caused by the pandemic, the teachers' perception about some aspects of their job, such as the way they relate with students, and their ability to perform the same commitments in a different scenario. The research has been conducted based on the analysis of an online anonymous questionnaire with more than 500 responses. Results suggested the importance of the development of a training devoted to improving teachers' digital skills, since they live frontline in education, and they have been directly impacted by disruptive changes. This study is part of the European project Digital Competences for Improving Security and Defence Education - DIGICODE. Pursuing to the Digital Education Action Plan, the project aims at improving education quality in security and defence, by means of digital tools in didactics, and the development of teachers' professional competences. 4. Raman Enhancement in Bowtie-Shaped Aperture-Particle Hybrid Nanostructures Fabricated with DNA-Assisted Lithography

Abstract

We report on efficient surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) supporting substrates, which are based on DNA-assisted lithography (DALI) and a layered configuration of materials. In detail, we used nanoscopic DNA origami bowtie templates to form hybrid nanostructures consisting of aligned silver bowtie-shaped particles and apertures of similar shape in a silver film. We hypothesized that this particular geometry could facilitate a four-fold advantage in Raman enhancement compared to common particle-based SERS substrates, and further, we verified these hypotheses experimentally and by finite difference time domain simulations. In summary, our DALI-fabricated hybrid structures suppress the background emission, allow emission predominantly from the areas of high field enhancement, and support additional resonances associated with the nanoscopic apertures. Finally, these nanoapertures also enhance the fields associated with the resonances of the underlying bowtie particles. The versatility and parallel nature of our DNA origami-based nanofabrication scheme and all of the above-mentioned features of the hybrid structures therefore make our optically resonant substrates attractive for various SERS-based applications., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, Supporting Information (5 pages, 3 tables, 1 figure)

Abstract

The controllable handling of an arbitrary single particle of matter with sub-100 nanometer (nm) dimensions is an essential but unsolved scientific challenge. We demonstrate nanoparticle-seeded glancing angle deposition using 10-100 nm diameter nanoparticle seeds (Er2O3, Fe@C, and Fe). The products are nanoparticle-nanowire heterostructures composed of arbitrary nanoscale tips attached to micron-length nanowire handles. Abstract

We present a method for controlled connection of gold electrodes with dsDNA molecules (locally on a chip) by utilizing polymerase to elongate single-stranded DNA primers attached to the electrodes. Thiol-modified oligonucleotides are directed and immobilized to nanoscale electrodes by means of dielectrophoretic trapping, and extended in a procedure mimicking PCR, finally forming a complete dsDNA molecule bridging the gap between the electrodes. Abstract

The utilization of digital tools in teaching and learning has experienced a remarkable surge in recent years. Even prior to the year 2020, their integration was steadily on the rise, but the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the early years of this decade significantly accelerated their widespread adoption. Importantly, this shift has endured beyond the pandemic's acute phase, signaling that certain changes have a lasting impact. The incorporation of digital tools into the educational landscape presents advantages and challenges. Moving from the conventional use of computers and similar devices for everyday tasks to their seamless integration into educational contexts is a process fraught with complexities. The scope of this research is understanding how students perceive higher education amidst the ongoing transition catalyzed by the pandemic. A comprehensive survey was administered to both military and civilian students enrolled in Security and Defence studies, with a specific focus on their experiences and perspectives as they navigate profound alterations in their educational routines. The analysis of the questionnaire highlights challenges faced by students in various dimensions. Among these hurdles, establishing meaningful connections with instructors and replicating a level of engagement comparable to face-to-face lectures emerged as significant challenges. Notably, there was a discernible uptick in students' self-assessment of their digital competencies. This research is a constituent part of the overarching initiatives undertaken within the European project DIGICODE. This project aims at enhancing the quality of education in Security and Defence by not only advocating for the judicious utilization of digital tools but also fostering the robust development of digital competencies among both students and educators.
