Preterm infants are most at risk of iron deficiency. However, our knowledge of the regulation of iron homeostasis in preterm infants is poor. The main goal of our research was to develop and validate an animal model of human prematurity to assess iron status in preterm infants. We performed a cesarean section on sows on the 109th day of pregnancy, which corresponds to the last trimester of human pregnancy. Preterm piglets showed decreased body weight, red blood cell indices, plasma iron level and transferrin saturation. Interestingly, higher hepatic and splenic non-heme iron content and plasma and hepatic ferritin levels were found in premature piglets compared with term ones. In addition, premature piglets showed higher mRNA levels of iron-regulatory hormone hepcidin in the liver than term animals, which have not been reflected in higher plasma hepcidin-25 levels. We also showed changes in hepcidin regulators, including hepatic bone morphogenetic protein 6, plasma erythroferrone and growth differentiation factor 15 in preterm piglets. Consequently, no difference was observed in iron-exporter ferroportin levels in the spleen and liver. Overall, it seems that premature piglets show a pattern of iron metabolism characteristic of functional iron deficiency and iron accumulation in the tissue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neonatal iron deficiency anemia is prevalent among domestic pigs but does not occur in the offspring of wild boar. The main causes of this disorder in piglets of modern pig breeds are paucity of hepatic iron stores, high birth weight, and rapid growth. Replenishment of fetal iron stores is a direct result of iron transfer efficiency across the placenta. In this study, we attempted to investigate the molecular potential of iron transfer across the placenta as a possible cause of differences between wild boar and Polish Large White (PLW) offspring. Furthermore, by analyzing placentas from PLW gilts that had litters of different sizes, we aimed to elucidate the impact of the number of fetuses on placental ability to transport iron. Using RNA sequencing, we examined the expression of iron-related genes in the placentas from wild boar and PLW gilts. We did not reveal significant differences in the expression of major iron transporters among all analyzed placentas. However, in wild boar placentas, we found higher expression of copper-dependent ferroxidases such as ceruloplasmin, zyklopen, and hephaestin, which facilitate iron export to the fetal circulation. We also determined a close co-localization of ceruloplasmin and zyklopen with ferroportin, the only iron exporter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In pigs, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a common disorder that occurs during the early postnatal period, leading to the stunted growth and increased mortality of piglets. The main cause of IDA is low iron stores in the liver of newborn piglets; these stores constitute the main source of iron needed to satisfy the erythropoietic requirements of the piglets in their first weeks of life. Insufficient iron stores in piglets are usually due to the inadequate placental iron transfer from the sow to the fetuses. Therefore, iron supplementation in pregnant sows has been implemented to enhance placental iron transfer and increase iron accumulation in the liver of the fetuses. Over the years, several oral and parenteral approaches have been attempted to supplement sows with various iron preparations, and consequently, to improve piglets' red blood cell indices. However, there is debate with regard to the effectiveness of iron supplementation in pregnant sows for preventing IDA in newborn piglets. Importantly, this procedure should be carried out with caution to avoid iron over-supplementation, which can lead to iron toxicity. Iron is an essential micronutrient for almost all living organisms. It plays an important role in DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis and takes part in electron transport, cellular respiration, cell proliferation and differentiation, and gene expression regulation. However, there is a fine line between excessive and insufficient body iron content. Iron overload is biochemically dangerous. It causes serious toxicities and generates reactive oxygen species via the Fenton reaction, leading to damage to cellular membranes, proteins, and DNA. Omega-3 fatty acids play an essential role in many physiological processes, including energy metabolism and signal transduction, as well as acting as structural components of cell membranes. Omega-3 fatty acids also help to maintain homeostasis and combat diseases. Recent studies using model organisms as well as clinical studies have revealed a link between omega-3 fatty acids and iron metabolism. Moreover, various iron-related disorders are significantly affected by omega-3 fatty acids. There is a clear relationship between iron and omega-3 fatty acid metabolisms; however, the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Therefore, in-depth research is needed to determine the exact nature of the metabolic interactions of these nutrients. Introduction/background: Obtaining funding for the implementation of a project entails the need to adapt the project to the requirements set by the European Union, as well as adequate competence on the part of the project team. This was particularly difficult during the Covid-19 pandemic, as even the most experienced and specialised teams could not fully anticipate the pandemic situation, which forced a number of changes in relation to the running of projects. These changes ranged from projects started before the outbreak of the pandemic to those that had already started during the pandemic. Given the authors' personal experience of working on EU projects during this period, there was very little information on how to implement changes in accordance with the health restrictions imposed by the Ministry of Health. At the time of the epidemic, even what appeared to be basic information had to be changed or clarified, however, to comply with the guidelines for implementing European projects. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, many organisations and actors implemented projects successfully. The question then is what factors influenced the successful implementation of these projects? Aim of the paper: The aim of the paper is to identify and define the conditions affecting the successful implementation of EU co-financed projects during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods: The study used a diagnostic survey method and desk research analysis, and the research tool used was an original interview questionnaire. Results and conclusions: The following were identified as the most important factors influencing the success of EU projects during the COVID-19 pandemic: the high level of knowledge of team members and their personality traits, the ability to transfer knowledge effectively, communication skills on the part of the project manager and team members, and the provision of appropriate tools and technology to carry out the work remotely.
