1. Optimal embedding results for fractional Sobolev spaces

Abstract

This paper deals with the fractional Sobolev spaces $W^{s, p}(\Omega)$, with $s\in (0, 1]$ and $p\in[1,+\infty]$. Here, we use the interpolation results in [4] to provide suitable conditions on the exponents $s$ and $p$ so that the spaces $W^{s, p}(\Omega)$ realize a continuous embedding when either $\Omega=\mathbb R^N$ or $\Omega$ is any open and bounded domain with Lipschitz boundary. Our results enhance the classical continuous embedding and, when $\Omega$ is any open bounded domain with Lipschitz boundary, we also improve the classical compact embeddings. All the results stated here are proved to be optimal. Also, our strategy does not require the use of Besov or other interpolation spaces.

Abstract

We present the experimental apparatus enabling the observation of the heteronuclear Efimov effect in an optically trapped ultracold mixture of $^6$Li-$^{133}$Cs with high-resolution control of the interactions. A compact double-species Zeeman slower consisting of four interleaving helical coils allows for a fast-switching between two optimized configurations for either Li or Cs and provides an efficient sequential loading into their respective MOTs. By means of a bichromatic optical trapping scheme based on species-selective trapping we prepare mixtures down to 100 nK of 1$\times$ 10$^4$ Cs atoms and 7$\times$ 10$^3$ Li atoms. Highly stable magnetic fields allow high-resolution atom-loss spectroscopy and enable to resolve splitting in the loss feature of a few tens of milligauss. These features allowed for a detailed study of the Efimov effect.

3. Quantum correlations, mixed states and bistability at the onset of lasing

Abstract

We derive a model for a single mode laser that includes all two particle quantum correlations between photons and electrons. In contrast to the predictions of semi-classical models, we find that lasing takes place in the presence of quantum bistability between a non-lasing and a non-classical coherent state. The coherent state is characterized by a central frequency and a finite linewidth and emerges with finite amplitude from a saddle-node bifurcation together with an unstable coherent state. Hence coherent emission in nanolasers originates through a mixing of lasing and non-lasing states. In the limit of a macrolaser with a large number of emitters and non-resonant modes, the laser threshold approaches the prediction of the semi-classical theory, but with the important difference that lasing can be achieved only in the presence of finite size perturbations., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

4. Global perturbative elliptic problems with critical growth in the fractional setting

Abstract

Given $s$, $q\in(0,1)$, and a bounded and integrable function $h$ which is strictly positive in an open set, we show that there exist at least two nonnegative solutions $u$ of the critical problem $$(-\Delta)^s u=\varepsilon h(x)u^q+u^{2^*_s-1},$$ as long as $\varepsilon>0$ is sufficiently small. Also, if $h$ is nonnegative, these solutions are strictly positive. The case $s=1$ was established in [APP00], which highlighted, in the classical case, the importance of combining perturbative techniques with variational methods: indeed, one of the two solutions branches off perturbatively in $\varepsilon$ from $u=0$, while the second solution is found by means of the Mountain Pass Theorem. The case $s\in\left(0,\frac12\right]$ was already established, with different methods, in [DMV17] (actually, in [DMV17] it was erroneously believed that the method would have carried through all the fractional cases $s\in(0,1)$, so, in a sense, the results presented here correct and complete the ones in [DMV17]).

5. A general theory for the $(s, p)$-superposition of nonlinear fractional operators

Abstract

We consider the continuous superposition of operators of the form \[ \iint_{[0, 1]\times (1, N)} (-\Delta)_p^s \,u\,d\mu(s,p), \] where $\mu$ denotes a signed measure over the set $[0, 1]\times (1, N)$, joined to a nonlinearity satisfying a proper subcritical growth. The novelty of the paper relies in the fact that, differently from the existing literature, the superposition occurs in both $s$ and $p$. Here we introduce a new framework which is so broad to include, for example, the scenarios of the finite sum of different (in both $s$ and $p$) Laplacians, or of a fractional $p$-Laplacian plus a $p$-Laplacian, or even combinations involving some fractional Laplacians with the "wrong" sign. The development of this new setting comes with two applications, which are related to the Weierstrass Theorem and a Mountain Pass technique. The results obtained contribute to the existing literature with several specific cases of interest which are entirely new.

Abstract

Using lower-limbs exoskeletons provides potential advantages in terms of productivity and safety associated with reduced stress. However, complex issues in human-robot interaction are still open, such as the physiological effects of exoskeletons and the impact on the user's subjective experience. In this work, an innovative exoskeleton, the Wearable Walker, is assessed using the EXPERIENCE benchmarking protocol from the EUROBENCH project. The Wearable Walker is a lower-limb exoskeleton that enhances human abilities, such as carrying loads. The device uses a unique control approach called Blend Control that provides smooth assistance torques. It operates two models simultaneously, one in the case in which the left foot is grounded and another for the grounded right foot. These models generate assistive torques combined to provide continuous and smooth overall assistance, preventing any abrupt changes in torque due to model switching. The EXPERIENCE protocol consists of walking on flat ground while gathering physiological signals such as heart rate, its variability, respiration rate, and galvanic skin response and completing a questionnaire. The test was performed with five healthy subjects. The scope of the present study is twofold: to evaluate the specific exoskeleton and its current control system to gain insight into possible improvements and to present a case study for a formal and replicable benchmarking of wearable robots., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

7. The pre-perihelion evolution of the activity of comet C/2017 K2 (PANSTARRS) during the water ice-line crossover

Abstract

Comets, relics from the early solar system, consist of dust and ice. The ice sublimates as comets approach the Sun, ejecting dust from their nuclei seen as activity. Different volatiles sublimate at different Sun-comet distances and eject dust of unique sizes, structures, and compositions. In this study, we present new polarimetric observations of Oort-cloud comet C/2017 K2 (PANSTARRS) in R and I-filter domains before, during, and after its crossover of the water-ice sublimation regime at phase angles of 15.9\arcdeg, 10.5\arcdeg, and 20.0\arcdeg, respectively. Combining multiband optical imaging data covering a wide range of heliocentric distances ($\sim$14$-$2.3 au), we aim to characterize the preperihelion evolution of cometary activity as well as the properties of its coma dust. Two discontinuous brightening events were observed: at $\sim$6 au presumably associated with changes in CO-like supervolatile ice activity, and at $\sim$2.9 au when water ice took over. Particularly, the latter activation is accompanied by changes in coma morphology and color whose trends differ between the inner ($\sim$10$^3$-km) and outer ($\sim$10$^4$-km) parts of the coma. No polarimetric discontinuities on the comet were observed over the inner coma region, all epochs showing phase-angle and wavelength dependencies compatible with those of active comets observed in similar observing geometry. During this period, the underlying dust continuum overwhelmed H$\alpha$ emission at around 656.3 nm, suggesting less water ice on the comet's surface than expected. We discuss K2's coma environment by combining numerical simulations of light scattered by dust and place the observations within the context of the comet's evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

Abstract

Methyl cyanide is one of the simplest interstellar complex organic molecules, widely detected in young solar analogues, shocked regions, protoplanetary disks and comets. CH3CN can be considered a key species to explore the chemical connections between planet forming disks and comets. For such comparison to be meaningful kinetics data for the reactions leading to CH3CN formation and destruction must be updated. We focus on the destruction of methyl cyanide through collisions with He+. A combined experimental and theoretical methodology is employed to obtain cross sections (CSs) and branching ratios (BRs) as a function of collision energy, from which reaction rate coefficients $k(T)$ are calculated in the temperature range from 10 to 300 K. CSs and BRs are measured using a guided ion beam set-up. A theoretical treatment based on an analytical formulation of the potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the charge exchange process is developed. The method employs a Landau Zener model to obtain reaction probabilities at crossings between the entrance and exit PESs, and an adiabatic centrifugal sudden approximation to calculate CSs and k(T). Rates and BRs differ from those predicted from widely-used capture models. In particular, the rate coefficient at 10 K is estimated to be almost one order of magnitude smaller than what reported in the KIDA database. As for BRs, the charge exchange is completely dissociative and the most abundant fragments are HCCN+/CCNH+, HCNH+ and CH2+. Our results, combined with a revised chemical network for formation of CH3CN, support the hypothesis that methyl cyanide in protoplanetary disks could be mostly the product of gas-phase processes rather than grain chemistry, as currently proposed. Abstract

Several neutrino detectors, KamLAND, Daya Bay, Double Chooz, RENO, and the forthcoming large-scale JUNO, rely on liquid scintillator to detect reactor antineutrino interactions. In this context, inverse beta decay represents the golden channel for antineutrino detection, providing a pair of correlated events, thus a strong experimental signature to distinguish the signal from a variety of backgrounds. However, given the low cross-section of antineutrino interactions, the development of a powerful event selection algorithm becomes imperative to achieve effective discrimination between signal and backgrounds. In this study, we introduce a machine learning (ML) model to achieve this goal: a fully connected neural network as a powerful signal-background discriminator for a large liquid scintillator detector. We demonstrate, using the JUNO detector as an example, that, despite the already high efficiency of a cut-based approach, the presented ML model can further improve the overall event selection efficiency. Moreover, it allows for the retention of signal events at the detector edges that would otherwise be rejected because of the overwhelming amount of background events in that region. We also present the first interpretable analysis of the ML approach for event selection in reactor neutrino experiments. Abstract

The optical and radiochemical purification of the scintillating liquid, which will fill the central detector of the JUNO experiment, plays a crucial role in achieving its scientific goals. Given its gigantic mass and dimensions and an unprecedented target value of about 3% @ 1 MeV in energy resolution, JUNO has set severe requirements on the parameters of its scintillator, such as attenuation length (Lat>20 m at 430 nm), transparency, light yield, and content of radioactive contaminants (238U,232Th<10-15 g/g). To accomplish these needs, the scintillator will be processed using several purification methods, including distillation in partial vacuum and gas stripping, which are performed in two large scale plants installed at the JUNO site. In this paper, layout, operating principles, and technical aspects which have driven the design and construction of the distil- lation and gas stripping plants are reviewed. The distillation is effective in enhancing the optical properties and removing heavy radio-impurities (238U,232Th, 40K), while the stripping process exploits pure water steam and high-purity nitrogen to extract gaseous contaminants (222Rn, 39Ar, 85Kr, O2) from the scintillator. The plant operating parameters have been tuned during the recent com- missioning phase at the JUNO site and several QA/QC measurements and tests have been performed to evaluate the performances of the plants. Abstract

In the field of rare event physics, it is common to have huge masses of organic liquid scintillator as detection medium. In particular, they are widely used to study neutrino properties or astrophysical neutrinos. Thanks to its safety properties (such as low toxicity and high flash point) and easy scalability, linear alkyl benzene is the most common solvent used to produce liquid scintillators for large mass experiments. The knowledge of the refractive index is a pivotal point to understand the detector response, as this quantity (and its wavelength dependence) affects the Cherenkov radiation and photon propagation in the medium. In this paper, we report the measurement of the refractive index of the JUNO liquid scintillator between 260-1064 nm performed with two different methods (an ellipsometer and a refractometer), with a sub percent level precision. In addition, we used an interferometer to measure the group velocity in the JUNO liquid scintillator and verify the expected value derived from the refractive index measurements., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

We explore the bound neutrons decay into invisible particles (e.g., $n\rightarrow 3 \nu$ or $nn \rightarrow 2 \nu$) in the JUNO liquid scintillator detector. The invisible decay includes two decay modes: $ n \rightarrow { inv} $ and $ nn \rightarrow { inv} $. The invisible decays of $s$-shell neutrons in $^{12}{\rm C}$ will leave a highly excited residual nucleus. Subsequently, some de-excitation modes of the excited residual nuclei can produce a time- and space-correlated triple coincidence signal in the JUNO detector. Based on a full Monte Carlo simulation informed with the latest available data, we estimate all backgrounds, including inverse beta decay events of the reactor antineutrino $\bar{\nu}_e$, natural radioactivity, cosmogenic isotopes and neutral current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos. Pulse shape discrimination and multivariate analysis techniques are employed to further suppress backgrounds. With two years of exposure, JUNO is expected to give an order of magnitude improvement compared to the current best limits. After 10 years of data taking, the JUNO expected sensitivities at a 90% confidence level are $\tau/B( n \rightarrow { inv} ) > 5.0 \times 10^{31} \, {\rm yr}$ and $\tau/B( nn \rightarrow { inv} ) > 1.4 \times 10^{32} \, {\rm yr}$., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

A search for full energy depositions from bosonic keV-scale dark matter candidates of masses between 65 keV and 1021 keV has been performed with data collected during Phase II of the GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment. Our analysis includes direct dark matter absorption as well as dark Compton scattering. With a total exposure of 105.5 kg yr, no evidence for a signal above the background has been observed. The resulting exclusion limits deduced with either Bayesian or Frequentist statistics are the most stringent direct constraints in the major part of the 140-1021 keV mass range. As an example, at a mass of 150 keV the dimensionless coupling of dark photons and axion-like particles to electrons has been constrained to $\alpha$'/$\alpha$ < 8.7x10$^{-24}$ and g$_{ae}$ < 3.3x10$^{-12}$ at 90% credible interval (CI), respectively. Additionally, a search for peak-like signals from beyond the Standard Model decays of nucleons and electrons is performed. We find for the inclusive decay of a single neutron in $^{76}$Ge a lower lifetime limit of $\tau_n$ > 1.5x10$^{24}$ yr and for a proton $\tau_p$ > 1.3x10$^{24}$ yr at 90% CI. For the electron decay e$^-\rightarrow\nu_e\gamma$ a lower limit of $\tau_e$ > 5.4x10$^{25}$ yr at 90% CI has been determined., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, 7 tables

Abstract

We discuss the existence theory of a nonlinear problem of nonlocal type subject to Neumann boundary conditions. Differently from the existing literature, the elliptic operator under consideration is obtained as a superposition of operators of mixed order. The setting that we introduce is very general and comprises, for instance, the sum of two fractional Laplacians, or of a fractional Laplacian and a Laplacian, as particular cases (the situation in which there are infinitely many operators, and even a continuous distribution of operators, can be considered as well). New bits of functional analysis are introduced to deal with this problem. An eigenvalue analysis divides the existence theory into two streams, one related to a Mountain Pass method, the other to a Linking technique.

18. Visual Action Planning with Multiple Heterogeneous Agents

Abstract

Visual planning methods are promising to handle complex settings where extracting the system state is challenging. However, none of the existing works tackles the case of multiple heterogeneous agents which are characterized by different capabilities and/or embodiment. In this work, we propose a method to realize visual action planning in multi-agent settings by exploiting a roadmap built in a low-dimensional structured latent space and used for planning. To enable multi-agent settings, we infer possible parallel actions from a dataset composed of tuples associated with individual actions. Next, we evaluate feasibility and cost of them based on the capabilities of the multi-agent system and endow the roadmap with this information, building a capability latent space roadmap (C-LSR). Additionally, a capability suggestion strategy is designed to inform the human operator about possible missing capabilities when no paths are found. The approach is validated in a simulated burger cooking task and a real-world box packing task.

Haptic feedback is essential for humans to successfully perform complex and delicate manipulation tasks. A recent rise in tactile sensors has enabled robots to leverage the sense of touch and expand their capability drastically. However, many tasks still need human intervention/guidance. For this reason, we present a teleoperation framework designed to provide haptic feedback to human operators based on the data from camera-based tactile sensors mounted on the robot gripper. Partial autonomy is introduced to prevent slippage of grasped objects during task execution. Notably, we rely exclusively on low-cost off-the-shelf hardware to realize an affordable solution. Abstract

Artificial intelligence is continuously seeking novel challenges and benchmarks to effectively measure performance and to advance the state-of-the-art. In this paper we introduce KANDY, a benchmarking framework that can be used to generate a variety of learning and reasoning tasks inspired by Kandinsky patterns. By creating curricula of binary classification tasks with increasing complexity and with sparse supervisions, KANDY can be used to implement benchmarks for continual and semi-supervised learning, with a specific focus on symbol compositionality. Classification rules are also provided in the ground truth to enable analysis of interpretable solutions. Together with the benchmark generation pipeline, we release two curricula, an easier and a harder one, that we propose as new challenges for the research community. With a thorough experimental evaluation, we show how both state-of-the-art neural models and purely symbolic approaches struggle with solving most of the tasks, thus calling for the application of advanced neuro-symbolic methods trained over time.

Abstract

The paper reports the results of an experiment aimed at testing to what extent ChatGPT 3.5 and 4 is able to answer questions regarding privacy policies designed in the new format that we propose. In a world of human-only interpreters, there was a trade-off between comprehensiveness and comprehensibility of privacy policies, leading to the actual policies not containing enough information for users to learn anything meaningful. Having shown that GPT performs relatively well with the new format, we provide experimental evidence supporting our policy suggestion, namely that the law should require fully comprehensive privacy policies, even if this means they become less concise.

Abstract

Nuclear reactors are a source of electron antineutrinos due to the presence of unstable fission products that undergo $\beta^-$ decay. They will be exploited by the JUNO experiment to determine the neutrino mass ordering and to get very precise measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters. This requires the reactor antineutrino spectrum to be characterized as precisely as possible both through high resolution measurements, as foreseen by the TAO experiment, and detailed simulation models. In this paper we present a benchmark analysis utilizing Serpent Monte Carlo simulations in comparison with real pressurized water reactor spent fuel data. Our objective is to study the accuracy of fission fraction predictions as a function of different reactor simulation approximations. Then, utilizing the BetaShape software, we construct fissile antineutrino spectra using the summation method, thereby assessing the influence of simulation uncertainties on reactor antineutrino spectrum.

Timely treatment of stroke is critical to minimize brain damage. Therefore, efforts are being made to educate the public on detecting stroke symptoms, e.g., face, arms, and speech test (FAST). In this position paper, we propose to perform the arm weakness test using the integrated video tracking from an iPhone - some general tests to assess the tracking quality and discuss potential critical points. The test has been performed on 4 stroke patients. The result is compared with the report of the clinician. Although presenting some limitations, the system proved to be able to detect arm weakness as a symptom of stroke. We envisage that introducing a portable body tracking system in such clinical tests will provide advantages in terms of objectivity, repeatability, and the possibility to record and compare groups of patients., Comment: 8 pages. Abstract

Human and humanoid posture control models usually rely on single or multiple degrees of freedom inverted pendulum representation of upright stance associated with a feedback controller. In models typically focused on the action between ankles, hips, and knees, the control of head position is often neglected, and the head is considered one with the upper body. However, two of the three main contributors to the human motion sensorium reside in the head: the vestibular and the visual system. As the third contributor, the proprioceptive system is distributed throughout the body. In human neurodegenerative brain diseases of motor control, like Progressive Supranuclear Palsy PSP and Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease IPD, clinical studies have demonstrated the importance of head motion deficits. This work specifically addresses the control of the head during a perturbed upright stance. A control model for the neck is proposed following the hypothesis of a modular posture control from previous studies. Data from human experiments are used to fit the model and retrieve sets of parameters representative of the behavior obtained in different conditions. The result of the analysis is twofold: validate the model and its underlying hypothesis and provide a system to assess the differences in posture control that can be used to identify the differences between healthy subjects and patients with different conditions. Abstract

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment operated enriched high-purity germanium detectors in a liquid argon cryostat, which contains 0.33% of $^{36}$Ar, a candidate isotope for the two-neutrino double-electron capture (2$\nu$ECEC) and therefore for the neutrinoless double-electron capture (0$\nu$ECEC). If detected, this process would give evidence of lepton number violation and the Majorana nature of neutrinos. In the radiative 0$\nu$ECEC of $^{36}$Ar, a monochromatic photon is emitted with an energy of 429.88 keV, which may be detected by the GERDA germanium detectors. We searched for the $^{36}$Ar 0$\nu$ECEC with GERDA data, with a total live time of 4.34 yr (3.08 yr accumulated during GERDA Phase II and 1.26 yr during GERDA Phase I). No signal was found and a 90% C.L. lower limit on the half-life of this process was established T$_{1/2}$ > 1.5x10$^{22}$ yr, Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Background Heterologous prime-boost schedules have been employed in SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, yet additional data on immunogenicity and effectiveness are still needed.Research design and methods Here, we measured the immunogenicity and effectiveness in the real-world setting of the mRNA booster dose in 181 subjects who had completed primary vaccination with ChAdOx1, BNT162b2, or mRNA1273 vaccines (IMMUNO_COV study; protocol code 18,869). The spike-specific antibody and B cell responses were analyzed up to 6 months after boosting.Results After an initial slower antibody response, the heterologous ChAdOx1/mRNA prime-boost formulation elicited spike-specific IgG titers comparable to homologous approaches, while spike-specific B cells showed a higher percentage of CD21−CD27− atypical cells compared to homologous mRNA vaccination. Mixed combinations of BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 elicited an immune response comparable with homologous strategies. Non-significant differences in the Relative Risk of infection, calculated over a period of 18 months after boosting, were reported among homologous or heterologous vaccination groups, indicating a comparable relative vaccine effectiveness.Conclusions Our data endorse the heterologous booster vaccination with mRNA as a valuable alternative to homologous schedules. This approach can serve as a solution in instances of formulation shortages and contribute to enhancing vaccine strategies for potential epidemics or pandemics.

Abstract

Abstract Arrhythmogenic Cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a life-threatening, genetically determined disease primarily caused by mutations in desmosomal genes, such as PKP2. Currently, there is no etiological therapy for ACM due to its complex and not fully elucidated pathogenesis. Various cardiac cell types affected by the genetic mutation, such as cardiomyocytes (CM) and cardiac mesenchymal stromal cells (cMSC), individually contribute to the ACM phenotype, driving functional abnormalities and fibro-fatty substitution, respectively. However, the relative importance of the CM and cMSC alterations, as well as their reciprocal influence in disease progression remain poorly understood. We hypothesised that ACM-dependent phenotypes are driven not only by alterations in individual cell types but also by the reciprocal interactions between CM and cMSC, which may further impact disease pathogenesis. We utilized a patient-specific, multicellular cardiac system composed of either control or PKP2-mutated CM and cMSC to assess the mutation’s role in fibro-fatty phenotype by immunofluorescence, and contractile behaviour of co-cultures using cell motion detection software. Additionally, we investigated reciprocal interactions both in silico and via multi-targeted proteomics. We demonstrated that ACM CM can promote fibro-adipose differentiation of cMSC. Conversely, ACM cMSC contribute to increasing the rate of abnormal contractile events with likely arrhythmic significance. Furthermore, we showed that an ACM-causative mutation alters the CM-cMSC interaction pattern. We identified the CM-sourced DLK1 as a novel regulator of fibro-adipose remodelling in ACM. Our study challenges the paradigm of exclusive cell-specific mechanisms in ACM. A deeper understanding of the cell-cell influence is crucial for identifying novel therapeutic targets for ACM, and this concept is exploitable for other cardiomyopathies.

Abstract

The core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is considered one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the supernova (SN) burst presents a unique opportunity for multi-messenger observations of CCSN events. In this study, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector currently under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed to ensure both prompt alert speed and comprehensive coverage of progenitor stars. It incorporates prompt monitors on the electronic board as well as online monitors at the data acquisition stage. Assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system exhibits sensitivity to pre-SN neutrinos up to a distance of approximately 1.6 (0.9) kiloparsecs and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kiloparsecs for a progenitor mass of 30 solar masses, considering both normal and inverted mass ordering scenarios. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by analyzing the accumulated event anisotropy of inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos. Abstract

We present the measurement of the two-neutrino double-$\beta$ decay rate of $^{76}$Ge performed with the GERDA Phase II experiment. With a subset of the entire GERDA exposure, 11.8 kg$\cdot$yr, the half-life of the process has been determined: $T^{2\nu}_{1/2} = (2.022 \pm 0.018_{stat} \pm 0.038_{sys})\times10^{21}$ yr. This is the most precise determination of the $^{76}$Ge two-neutrino double-$\beta$ decay half-life and one of the most precise measurements of a double-$\beta$ decay process. The relevant nuclear matrix element can be extracted: $M^{2\nu}_{\text{eff}} = (0.101\pm0.001).$, Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

We search for tri-nucleon decays of $^{76}$Ge in the dataset from the GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment. Decays that populate excited levels of the daughter nucleus above the threshold for particle emission lead to disintegration and are not considered. The ppp-, ppn-, and pnn-decays lead to $^{73}$Cu, $^{73}$Zn, and $^{73}$Ga nuclei, respectively. These nuclei are unstable and eventually proceed by the beta decay of $^{73}$Ga to $^{73}$Ge (stable). We search for the $^{73}$Ga decay exploiting the fact that it dominantly populates the 66.7 keV $^{73m}$Ga state with half-life of 0.5 s. The nnn-decays of $^{76}$Ge that proceed via $^{73m}$Ge are also included in our analysis. We find no signal candidate and place a limit on the sum of the decay widths of the inclusive tri-nucleon decays that corresponds to a lower lifetime limit of 1.2x10$^{26}$ yr (90% credible interval). Abstract

Extreme events generated by complex systems have been intensively studied in many fields due to their great impact on scientific research and our daily lives. However, their prediction is still a challenge in spite of the tremendous progress that model-free machine learning has brought to the field. We experimentally generate, and theoretically model, extreme events in a current-modulated, single-mode microcavity laser operating on orthogonal polarizations, where their strongly differing thresholds -- due to cavity birefringence -- give rise to giant light pulses initiated by spontaneous emission. Applying reservoir-computing techniques, we identify in advance the emergence of an extreme event from a time series, in spite of coarse sampling and limited sample length. Performance is optimized through new hybrid configurations that we introduce in this paper. Advance warning times can reach 5ns, i.e. approximately ten times the rise time of the individual extreme event.
