The coordination of ammonia to copper(II) and the solvation of the complex in liquid ammonia are investigated by X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). The spectra reveal that the equatorial ammonia nitrogens and axial nitrogen are 2.00 and 2.19 angstroms away from copper, respectively. However, no data are given on the number of axial nitrogen. The identification of various coordination models is thus made with the use of both X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy and theoretical calculations using the DV-Xalpha method. more...
