The coordination of ammonia to copper(II) and the solvation of the complex in liquid ammonia are investigated by X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS). The spectra reveal that the equatorial ammonia nitrogens and axial nitrogen are 2.00 and 2.19 angstroms away from copper, respectively. However, no data are given on the number of axial nitrogen. The identification of various coordination models is thus made with the use of both X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy and theoretical calculations using the DV-Xalpha method. more...

Liquid ammonia is used as a solvent in extracting the first nine- and five- atom naked clusters of silicon in solution, and the structural characterization of Si9 (super 3-) and Si5 (super 2-) in compounds crystallized from such solutions, is described. A study was conducted to analyze the reduction of lead in liquid ammonia solutions of KI and RbBr at -70 degrees C using voltammetry, potensiostatic and galvanostatic methods. A three-compartment electrochemical cell supporting medium-porosity glass frits was utilized in the study.
