Abstract

Cryogenic liquids are claimed to have a noteworthy impact on the concept of improved future power equipment. The low boiling temperature of liquid helium or liquid nitrogen offers the use of superconducting materials which eliminate ohmic losses in the conductors on the one hand. This yields a high overall current density in the equipment. On the other hand, the liquids seem to be interesting basic insulators with reasonable dielectric performance in the medium high voltage domain. The liquids are chemically inert, and no irreversible compound within the insulation system must be anticipated. Hazards such as fire risk in case of faults can be ruled out. Thermal aging of the insulation system can also be disregarded because no excess temperature must be taken into account during service, even in case of temporary overload operation. Dielectric aging due to partial discharges may be of little concern because the liquids can be easily fully reprocessed by vaporizing and recondensing in a closed cooling circuit; no memory effects then can degrade the liquid. Finally, the liquids are produced from gases which are found in open atmosphere. Thus, the disposal of insulation systems at the end of operational life is straightforward.

Abstract

Analyses of the quench characteristics of bismuth-2223 high temperature superconducting pancake coils operating at liquid helium temperatures is presented. The experimental and numerical studies of the single and four double pancake coils led to the observance of broad resistive transition in the bismuth-2223 coils. The results indicate the major influence of protection resistance on transient voltage, hot-spot temperature and current decaying.

Abstract

The performance of an acoustic microscope is presented. The microscope achieves a high resolution of 15 nm through pressurization of its coupling medium, superfluid helium, to more than 20 bar. The process removes the linear attenuation processes in the fluid, leading to images that may not be obtained from a scanning electron microscope. Meanwhile, the theory of harmonic generation is used to account for nonlinear acoustic effects manifested in the coupling medium.

SHEGs use the quantum nature of liquid helium to provide a stable reference state of zero rotation with regard to inertial space. Cryogenics Managing Director Jeremy Good has contributed to the development of the liquid helium temperature refridgerator. The technique achieves the very low temperature of four degrees Kelvin at greatly reduced cost. Superconducting metals may be used more cheaply as the refridgeration techniques do not boil off helium. Traditional processes use liquefied gas-filled helium cryostats which gradually boil away. Ceramic high-temperature superconductors will also be used more efficiently.
