Indigenous youth comprise a significant and diverse collection of populations. School psychologists are uniquely placed to serve Indigenous students and improve their long-term outcomes. However, in the face of longstanding colonial practices and systemic oppression, which have resulted in poor educational outcomes for Indigenous students, school psychology research broadly underrepresents Indigenous students. This proves problematic considering research informs practice. The goal of this review is to evaluate the current standing of school psychology research focused on Indigenous youth and identify areas of need. The current systematic review yielded 57 articles focusing on Indigenous youth from 10 indexed school psychology journals. A significant portion of the articles were published in the 1980s, with fewer than three publications per year in the two decades following. The articles demonstrated a preference for assessment and related topics, with limited research focused on intervention, culture, and equity. This focus on assessment to compare Indigenous youth with youth of other racial and ethnic backgrounds serves to support the systems of oppression in place. These findings highlight the need for school psychology research to exert a concentrated effort toward Indigenous-focused research with more varied topics beyond assessment. Implications for trainers, researchers, and school psychology journals are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Incremental Rehearsal (IR) and traditional drill (TD) on retention of multiplication facts with 29 students in third and fourth grades with low mathematical skills. Results indicated that IR led to significantly more facts being retained, and was essentially equal to TD for efficiency as measured by number of facts retained per instructional minute. Memory scores accounted for 34% of the variance beyond mathematics calculation scores in retention of multiplication facts for the TD condition, but only 2% of the variance for the IR condition. Thus, retention of multiplication facts seems largely influenced by a student's memory skills when using less effective instructional techniques such as TD, while approaches like IR are likely effective regardless of memory skills. The current study examined the effect of academic interventions and modifications on behavioral outcomes in a meta-analysis of 32 single-case design studies. Academic interventions included modifying task difficulty, providing instruction in reading, mathematics, or writing, and contingent reinforcement for academic performance. There was an overall small to moderate effect (ϕ = .56) on behavioral outcomes, with a stronger effect on increasing time on task (ϕ = .64) than on decreasing disruptive behavior (ϕ = .42). There was a small effect for using a performance-based contingent reinforcer (ϕ = .48). Interventions completed in an individual setting resulted in a moderate to large effects on behavior outcomes. Results of the current meta-analysis suggest that academic interventions can offer both positive academic and behavioral outcomes. Teaching children too many words during a lesson reduces retention. The amount of new information a student can successfully rehearse and recall later is called acquisition rate (AR), which has been reliably measured with students in first, third, and fifth grades. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability of assessing AR for sight words with kindergarten students. A total of 32 kindergarten students from five classrooms across two elementary schools participated in the study. AR was measured twice over a 2-week period, and 1-day retention was measured for the first AR. The AR data resulted in a 2-week delayed alternate form reliability of r = .83, and there was also a strong correlation between AR and number of words retained 1 day later. The limitations, implications, and considerations for the name of the construct being assessed are discussed.

Many English language learners (ELLs) experience difficulties with basic English reading due in part to low language proficiency. The authors examined the relationship between English language proficiency and growth during reading interventions for ELLs. A total of 201 second- and third-grade students with a variety of home languages participated. The students were identified as needing a targeted intervention, because scores on the fall oral reading fluency screening measure fell below the benchmark criterion. Thus, all participating students received reading interventions approximately four times each week throughout the school year. Results indicated that those students identified in the lowest English proficiency stage on the Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State (ACCESS) made the highest growth as indicated in the spring benchmark assessment, and the ACCESS score added negligible variance beyond baseline reading skills.
