We report the results of deep optical follow-up surveys of the first two gravitational-wave sources, GW150914 and GW151226, done by the GRAvitational Wave Inaf TeAm Collaboration (GRAWITA). The VLT Survey Telescope (VST) responded promptly to the gravitational-wave alerts sent by the LIGO and Virgo Collaborations, monitoring a region of $90$ deg$^2$ and $72$ deg$^2$ for GW150914 and GW151226, respectively, and repeated the observations over nearly two months. Both surveys reached an average limiting magnitude of about 21 in the $r-$band. The paper describes the VST observational strategy and two independent procedures developed to search for transient counterpart candidates in multi-epoch VST images. Several transients have been discovered but no candidates are recognized to be related to the gravitational-wave events. Interestingly, among many contaminant supernovae, we find a possible correlation between the supernova VSTJ57.77559-59.13990 and GRB150827A detected by {\it Fermi}-GBM. The detection efficiency of VST observations for different types of electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational-wave events are evaluated for the present and future follow-up surveys., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures- Submitted to MNRAS

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The merger of two neutron stars is predicted to give rise to three major detectable phenomena: a short burst of gamma-rays, a gravitational wave signal, and a transient optical/near-infrared source powered by the synthesis of large amounts of very heavy elements via rapid neutron capture (the r-process). Such transients, named "macronovae" or "kilonovae", are believed to be centres of production of rare elements such as gold and platinum. The most compelling evidence so far for a kilonova was a very faint near-infrared rebrightening in the afterglow of a short gamma-ray burst at z = 0.356, although findings indicating bluer events have been reported. Here we report the spectral identification and describe the physical properties of a bright kilonova associated with the gravitational wave source GW 170817 and gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A associated with a galaxy at a distance of 40 Mpc from Earth. Using a series of spectra from ground-based observatories covering the wavelength range from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared, we find that the kilonova is characterized by rapidly expanding ejecta with spectral features similar to those predicted by current models. The ejecta is optically thick early on, with a velocity of about 0.2 times light speed, and reaches a radius of about 50 astronomical units in only 1.5 days. As the ejecta expands, broad absorption-like lines appear on the spectral continuum indicating atomic species produced by nucleosynthesis that occurs in the post-merger fast-moving dynamical ejecta and in two slower (0.05 times light speed) wind regions. Comparison with spectral models suggests that the merger ejected 0.03-0.05 solar masses of material, including high-opacity lanthanides., Comment: version accepted for publication in Nature. This Supplement provides supporting material for arXiv:1602.08492 . We briefly summarize past electromagnetic (EM) follow-up efforts as well as the organization and policy of the current EM follow-up program. We compare the four probability sky maps produced for the gravitational-wave transient GW150914, and provide additional details of the EM follow-up observations that were performed in the different bands., Comment: For the main Letter, see arXiv:1602.08492

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
A gravitational-wave (GW) transient was identified in data recorded by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors on 2015 September 14. The event, initially designated G184098 and later given the name GW150914, is described in detail elsewhere. By prior arrangement, preliminary estimates of the time, significance, and sky location of the event were shared with 63 teams of observers covering radio, optical, near-infrared, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths with ground- and space-based facilities. In this Letter we describe the low-latency analysis of the GW data and present the sky localization of the first observed compact binary merger. We summarize the follow-up observations reported by 25 teams via private Gamma-ray Coordinates Network circulars, giving an overview of the participating facilities, the GW sky localization coverage, the timeline and depth of the observations. As this event turned out to be a binary black hole merger, there is little expectation of a detectable electromagnetic (EM) signature. Nevertheless, this first broadband campaign to search for a counterpart of an Advanced LIGO source represents a milestone and highlights the broad capabilities of the transient astronomy community and the observing strategies that have been developed to pursue neutron star binary merger events. Detailed investigations of the EM data and results of the EM follow-up campaign are being disseminated in papers by the individual teams., Comment: For Supplement, see https://arxiv.org/abs/1604.07864

Abstract Background Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) presents a significant challenge in the medical field due to its high incidence and resistance to chemotherapy. Chemoresistance in NSCLC diminishes treatment efficacy and contributes to poor patient outcomes. Matrine alkaloids have shown promise in reversing chemotherapy resistance in NSCLC by targeting DNA repair mechanisms. Methods Utilizing molecular dynamics simulations, we explored the interactions between Matrine alkaloids and DNA repair-related proteins to elucidate their impact on NSCLC cells. In vitro experiments involved treating A549/DDP cells with Matrine alkaloids to evaluate their sensitizing effects on lung cancer cells. Additionally, animal model experiments were conducted to validate the therapeutic potential of Matrine alkaloids in NSCLC treatment. Results Our findings demonstrate that Matrine alkaloids disrupt DNA damage repair processes in NSCLC cells, leading to increased sensitivity to chemotherapy. Molecular docking studies revealed the intricate mechanisms by which Matrine alkaloids interact with DNA repair proteins, impacting cell survival and proliferation. Both cell experiments and animal models confirmed the chemosensitizing effects of Matrine alkaloids in NSCLC treatment. Conclusion Matrine alkaloids offer a promising avenue for overcoming chemotherapy resistance in NSCLC by interfering with DNA repair pathways. This study lays a solid foundation for future clinical investigations into the potential of Matrine alkaloids as effective therapeutic agents for enhancing NSCLC treatment outcomes.

- Abstract
A long-term (2004-2015) analysis of the fluctuations of Earth’s thermally emitted radiation, measured by the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on board the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite in the thermal infrared (TIR) spectral range (i.e. 10-12 µm), have been performed in order to investigate the complex process of preparation of earthquakes in that area. Such analysis showed that more than 67% of all identified (space-time persistent) anomalies occur in the pre-fixed space-time window around the occurrence time and location of earthquakes (M≥4), with a false positive rate smaller than 33%. Moreover, Molchan error diagram analysis gave a clear indication of non-casualty of such a correlation, in comparison with the random guess function. In this paper, the characterization of the signal, in terms of punctual expected values and related variability, have been extended up to 2022 and the Robust Satellite Technique (RST) and RETIRA (Robust Estimator of TIR Anomalies) index applied to identify possible Significant Sequences of TIR Anomalies (SSTAs) in 2023 in relation with the seismic sequence that hit the region of Kahramanmaraş starting with the February 6th, M7,8 EQ., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Sepsis is defined as a life-threatening organ dysfunction syndrome caused by dysregulated host response to infection, characterized by a systemic inflammatory response to infection. The use of antibiotics, fluid resuscitation, and organ support therapy has limited prognostic benefit in patients with sepsis, and its incidence is not diminishing, which is attracting increased attention in medicine. Sepsis remains one of the most debilitating and expensive illnesses. One of the main reasons of septic mortality is now understood to be disruption of immune homeostasis. Immunotherapy is revolutionizing the treatment of illnesses in which dysregulated immune responses play a significant role. This “trained immunity”, which is a potent defense against infection regardless of the type of bacteria, fungus, or virus, is attributed to the discovery that the innate immune cells possess immune memory via metabolic and epigenetic reprogramming. Here we reviewed the immunotherapy of innate immune cells in sepsis, the features of trained immunity, and the relationship between trained immunity and sepsis.

We analyzed outcomes of doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide (AC) followed by weekly paclitaxel as neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) for breast cancer (BC), in an everyday practice with long-term follow-up of patients. All patients (n = 200) who received the AC-paclitaxel combination as NAC for BC at the Soroka University Medical Center from 2003 to 2012 were included in this retrospective cohort study. AC was administered on an every 3-week schedule (standard dose) until May, 2007 (n = 99); and subsequently every 2-week dose dense (dd) (n = 101). Clinical pathologic features, treatment course, and outcome information were recorded. Complete pathologic response (pCR) was analyzed according to BC subtype, dose regimen, and stage.Median age was 49 years; 55.5% and 44.5% of patients were clinically stage 2 and 3, respectively. Standard dose patients had more T3 tumors. Subtypes were human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2)-positive 32.5% (of whom 82% received trastuzumab), hormone receptor-positive/HER2-negative 53%, and triple negative 14.5%. Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) was performed in 48.5% of patients; only 9.5% were deemed suitable for BCS prior to NAC. Toxicity was acceptable. The overall pCR rate was 26.0% and was significantly higher in the dd group and HER2-positive patients. With a median follow-up of 9.51 years median event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) are 10.85 years and 12.61 years, respectively. Patients achieving pCR had significantly longer EFS and OS.NAC for BC with AC-paclitaxel can be safely administered in the "real-world' setting with high efficacy. Current efforts are aimed at increasing rates of pCR and identifying patients who may benefit from additional therapy or conversely, de-escalated treatment.

Phase change energy storage technology enhances the integration of renewable resources into low-carbon energy systems for grassland pastoral settlements, further addressing the balance between energy needs and environmental sustainability. This study examines a heating system using an experimental platform in an environmental chamber, where the thermal storage and release processes of phase change energy storage flooring were monitored. The results revealed that phase change energy storage flooring exhibits higher heat transfer efficiency and faster heating rates. Under 40 °C heating conditions, the heating rate of the thermal storage layer increased by 12.5% within 1 h. The flooring also demonstrated superior heat release performance, with the peak heat flux of the thermal storage layer delayed by 15 min. Higher heating temperatures shortened the heating time and extended the heat release duration of the phase change energy storage flooring. Under 45 °C heating conditions, the heat transfer efficiency of the surface temperature of the thermal storage layer increased by 38% within 1 hour and by 24.7% over 4 h. In addition, energy consumption in different tests was analyzed, and thermal conductivity was discussed according to the heat transfer model. Phase change energy storage flooring, when coupled with the abundant solar energy resources available in grassland pastoral areas, presents a viable option for the construction of low-carbon energy systems in grassland pastoral settlements.
