Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of masticatory myofacial pain on the function of the stomatognatic system. Materials and methods: A group of 42 patients with myofacial pain of the masticatiry muscles, aged from 29-52 years (median 40) and group of 42 health controls, aged from 30-57 years (median 40) were examined using RDC/TMD protocol. Mandibular movements (unassisted opening without pain, maximal unassisted opening, maximal assisted opening, maximal right and left laterotrusion, and maximal protrusion) were measured using precise caliper. Results: In myofascial pain group the mean value of unassisted opening without pain was 42.64± ; ; ; ; 8.60 mm, maximal unassisted opening was 48.01± ; ; ; ; 8.43 mm and maximal assisted opening was 49.19± ; ; ; ; 8.58 mm while in health control group mean value of unassisted opening without pain was 51.36± ; ; ; ; 5.35 mm, maximal unassisted opening was 51.37± ; ; ; ; 5.34 mm and maximal assisted opening was 52.43± ; ; ; ; 5.33 mm. The mean value of maximal right laterotrusion was 9.89± ; ; ; ; 2.10 mm, and maximal left laterotrusion was 10.01± ; ; ; ; 2.56 mm in myofascial pain group compared to health control group where the mean value of maximal right laterotrusion was 10.59± ; ; ; ; 2.09 mm, and left laterotrusion was 10.59± ; ; ; ; 1.89 mm. The mean value of maximal protrusion in myofascial pain group was 9.12± ; ; ; ; 2.15 mm ; while in health control group it was 11.12± ; ; ; ; 2.04 mm. Monounsaturated oil (MUFA-diet) such as virgin olive oil (VOO) and polyunsaturated oil (PUFA-diet) such as corn oil (CO) are suggested to have selective physiological effects on membrane in tissues. The spleen polar lipid content and fatty acid composition were examined in 2-3 mo old Male Balb/c mice after three weeks of feeding lipid-supplemented diets containing olive oil (5% w/w, FOO group) and corn oil (5% w/w, FCO group). Total lipids were extracted according to Folch et al., and polar lipids were separated and purified by solid-phase extraction and analysed in form of the fatty acid methyl esters by gas chromatographic analysis. The results are shown as mean b standard deviation. Differences among groups were tested by nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U-test (p ƒŹ 0.05). Similar to total lipids, phospholipids were fatty acids affected by the type of dietary oils in examined tissue. Palmitic (16:0) and stearic (18:0) fatty acids were major saturated fatty acids (SFA) in polar lipids in the spleen tissue. In the FOO and FCO groups, the content of saturated fatty acids was lower than in the control group. In the FCO group, the content of unsaturated fatty acids was higher than in FOO group. Feeding lipid-supplemented diet reduced C20:4/C18:2 ratio in the FOO and FCO groups. The PUFA/MUFA and PUFA/SFA ratios (parameter which display a considerable degree of homeostasis in biomembranes) were lower in the FOO group and higher in FCO group than in control group. The oleic acid (C18:1n-9) content significantly increased in the MUFA diet than in the control and FCO group, and was the major monounsaturated acid in the spleen polar lipid tissue. Arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) was the major polyunsaturated acid in the spleen tissue sample, lower content of arachidonic acid was in FOO diet than in the control and FCO group. It is to conclude that the dietary enriched oils, type PUFA and MUFA affected the fatty acid composition in the total phospholipids of the spleen tissue.
