Objective: Children and adolescents are among the most vulnerable road users, and road traffic accidents (RTAs) can lead to not only physical injuries but also adverse psychological outcomes, particularly posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, estimates of the prevalence of PTSD among children and adolescents following RTAs varied considerably across studies. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of PTSD among this population.Methods: A systematic search for literature was performed in the electronic databases of PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Embase. Heterogeneity was assessed using the Cochran's chi-square test and quantified by the I2 value. Meta-regression analyses were carried out to identify the effects of some potential moderators on the overall heterogeneity. Subgroup analyses were performed to estimate the pooled prevalence of PTSD according to some sample characteristics.Results: Eleven eligible studies with a total of 1532 children and adolescents who were involved in RTAs were included. The overall heterogeneity (I2 = 89.7, P < 0.001) was high across the eligible studies, and the pooled prevalence of PTSD was 19.95% (95% confidence interval, 13.63% to 27.09%) by a random-effects model. No significant moderators of the overall heterogeneity were identified using meta-regression analyses. Subgroup analyses showed that the pooled prevalence of PTSD differed significantly according to the study location and gender (P < 0.05).Conclusions: One-fifth of children and adolescents developed PTSD in the aftermath of RTAs, indicating the need for regular assessment of PTSD and timely and effective psychological interventions among this population. Objective: To assess the utilization of health care services by pregnant women affected by preeclampsia (PE). Design: Population-based study. Setting: Perinatal partnership hospitals in Ontario. Population: Obstetric deliveries in 2005 Canadian province of Ontario (about 95% of births). Methods: For each PE case, four subjects without PE matched by age, parity, plurality, and hospital at childbirth were chosen as the controls. We compared the utilization of intra-partum care services and infant outcomes between the two groups. We also estimated the extra costs to the health care system in Ontario for caesarean delivery and caring of extremely low birth weight infants attributable to PE during the neonatal period and in the first 2 years of life. Main Outcome Measures: Cesarean delivery, hospital stay, extremely low birth weight infants, cost. Results: Of the 120,611 obstetric deliveries included in this analysis, 1240 (1.3%) were diagnosed with PE. Patients with PE and matched controls were similar in maternal age, parity, and other demographic characteristics. Compared with study subjects without PE, those with PE had increased uses of spinal anesthesia, maternal transfer, Cesarean delivery, labour induction, neonatal transfer, newborn resuscitation, longer hospital stay for childbirth, and higher rates of preterm births and low birth weight. The extra costs to the health care system for cesarean delivery and caring of extremely low-birth-weight infants attributable to PE during the neonatal period and in the first 2 years of life in Ontario were $0.5 millions, 3.1 millions, and $5.1 million per year, respectively, if we use the reported PE rate in this database. Abstract: The objective of the study was to construct a short screening scale for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We used data from our previous study on PTSD among flood victims in 1998 and 1999 in Hunan, China, which was a representative population sample of 27,267 subjects from 16 to 94 years old. Multistage sampling was used to select the subjects from the flood areas and PTSD was ascertained with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: 4th Edition (DSM-IV). We randomly assigned 80% (n =21,762) of study subjects to construct the screening scale (construct model) and the remaining 20% (n =5505) to test the model. Logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristic analysis were used to select a subset of items (symptoms) from the full scale that would effectively predict PTSD. A seven-symptom screening scale for PTSD was selected. A score of 3 or more on this scale was used to define positive cases of PTSD, with a sensitivity of 87.9%, specificity of 97.9%, positive predictive value of 81.3%, and negative predictive value of 98.7%. The short screening scale developed in this study is highly valid, reliable, and predictable. It is an efficient tool to screen PTSD in epidemiological and clinical studies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The objective of this paper is to develop a brief screening instrument of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for young victims of natural disasters. Data were derived from flood victims in 1998 and 1999 in Hunan, China. A representative population sample of 6,852 subjects 7-15 years of age was selected. Among them, 6,073 (88.6%) were interviewed. Multistage sampling was used to select the subjects and PTSD was ascertained with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: 4th Edition (DSM-IV). We randomly assigned 80% (4,851) of the study subjects to construct the screening instrument (construct model) and the remaining 20% (1,222) subjects to examine the model (validation model). Logistic regression analysis and receiver operating characteristics curves were utilized to select a subset of symptoms and cutoff point from the pre-structured questionnaires. A seven-symptom instrument for PTSD screening was selected. Scores of 3 or more on this instrument were employed to define positive cases of PTSD with a sensitivity of 96.9%, specificity 99.0%, positive predictive value (PPV) 82.6%, and negative predictive value (NPV) 99.8%. Trace amounts of monoacylglycerols (MAG) were identified during the final stage (30 DAI). Further, gas chromatography analysis showed an increase in the major unsaturated fatty acid (linoleic and linolenic) content from 3 to 10 DAI followed by a slow decline. The process of extracting polyphyllin II and polyphyllin VII by water-assisted extraction was established and optimized in this study. Response surface methodology was used to establish a prediction model to optimize the extraction conditions. Based on the one-way test, the Box–Behnken design with three factors and three levels was used for the experimental program, and the composition analysis was carried out by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The optimal extraction conditions for polyphyllin II and polyphyllin VII were as follows: extraction time of 57 and 21 min, extraction temperature of 36 and 32 °C, solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:10 and 1:5 g/mL, respectively, and the yields of polyphyllin II and polyphyllin VII were 1.895 and 5.010%, which was similar to the predicted value of 1.835 and 4.979%. The results of the ANOVA showed that the model fit was good, and the Box–Behnken response surface method could optimize the water-assisted extraction of saponins from the leaves of Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis. Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl(PFAS) substances are the most common environmental pollutants, which has an inconsistent association with hyperuricemia across different populations. This study explored the relationship between hyperuricemia and different gender PFAS and PFAS mixtures, using data from two cycles of the NHANES from 2015-2018. Weighted logistic regression results showed that the correlation between individual PFAS and hyperuricemia was significant only in men. Compared to the reference quartile, the fourth quartile of n-PFOA increased the risk of hyperuricemia in men (OR: 2.79, 95% CI: 1.50, 5.18). The Qgcomp model results showed that each quartile increase in the serum concentration of PFAS mixtures was associated with an increased likelihood of hyperuricemia in the total population, with odds ratios (OR) for men and women being 1.74 (95% CI: 1.26, 2.40), and 2.04 (95% CI: 1.35, 3.16), respectively. we concluded that PFAS might increase the risk of hyperuricemia in adults. Background: As the population ages, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) become common conditions that often coexist. Evidence has shown that MCI could lead to reduced treatment compliance, medication management, and self‐care ability in T2DM patients. Therefore, early identification of those with increased risk of MCI is crucial from a preventive perspective. Given the growing utilization of decision trees in prediction of health‐related outcomes, this study aimed to identify MCI in T2DM patients using the decision tree approach. Methods: This hospital‐based case–control study was performed in the Endocrinology Department of Xiangya Hospital affiliated to Central South University between March 2021 and December 2022. MCI was defined based on the Petersen criteria. Demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and T2DM‐related information were collected. The study sample was randomly divided into the training and validation sets in a 7:3 ratio. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed, and a decision tree model was established using the chi‐square automatic interaction detection (CHAID) algorithm to identify key predictor variables associated with MCI. The area under the curve (AUC) value was used to evaluate the performance of the established decision tree model, and the performance of multivariate regression model was also evaluated for comparison. Results: A total of 1001 participants (705 in the training set and 296 in the validation set) were included in this study. The mean age of participants in the training and validation sets was 60.2 ± 10.3 and 60.4 ± 9.5 years, respectively. There were no significant differences in the characteristics between the training and validation sets (p >.05). The CHAID decision tree analysis identified six key predictor variables associated with MCI, including age, educational level, household income, regular physical activity, diabetic nephropathy, and diabetic retinopathy. The established decision tree model had 15 nodes composed of 4 layers, and age is the most significant predictor variable. It performed well (AUC =.75 [95% confidence interval (CI):.71–.78] and.67 [95% CI:.61–.74] in the training and validation sets, respectively), was internally validated, and had comparable predictive value compared to the multivariate logistic regression model (AUC =.76 [95% CI:.72–.80] and.69 [95% CI:.62–.75] in the training and validation sets, respectively). Conclusion: The established decision tree model based on age, educational level, household income, regular physical activity, diabetic nephropathy, and diabetic retinopathy performed well with comparable predictive value compared to the multivariate logistic regression model and was internally validated. Due to its superior classification accuracy and simple presentation as well as interpretation of collected data, the decision tree model is more recommended for the prediction of MCI in T2DM patients in clinical practice. Castor (Ricinus communis L.) seeds produce abundant ricinoleic acid during seed maturation, which is important for plant development and human demands. Ricinoleic acid, as a unique hydroxy fatty acid (HFA), possesses a distinct bond structure that could be used as a substitute for fossil fuels. Here, we identified all homologous genes related to glycolysis, hydroxy fatty acid biosynthesis, and triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation in castor seeds. Furthermore, we investigated their expression patterns globally during five seed development stages. We characterized a total of 66 genes involved in the glycolysis pathway, with the majority exhibiting higher expression levels during the early stage of castor bean seed development. This metabolic process provided abundant acetyl-CoA for fatty acid (FA) biosynthesis. Subsequently, we identified 82 genes involved in the processes of de novo FA biosynthesis and TAG assembly, with the majority exhibiting high expression levels during the middle or late stages. In addition, we examined the expression patterns of the transcription factors involved in carbohydrate and oil metabolism. For instance, RcMYB73 and RcERF72 exhibited high expression levels during the early stage, whereas RcWRI1, RcABI3, and RcbZIP67 showed relatively higher expression levels during the middle and late stages, indicating their crucial roles in seed development and oil accumulation. Our study suggests that the high HFA production in castor seeds is attributed to the interaction of multiple genes from sugar transportation to lipid droplet packaging. Therefore, this research comprehensively characterizes all the genes related to glycolysis, fatty acid biosynthesis, and triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation in the castor and provides novel insight into exploring the genetic mechanisms underlying seed oil accumulation in the endosperm of castor beans. Summary: Genomic imprinting refers to parent‐of‐origin‐dependent gene expression and primarily occurs in the endosperm of flowering plants, but its functions and epigenetic mechanisms remain to be elucidated in eudicots. Castor bean, a eudicot with large and persistent endosperm, provides an excellent system for studying the imprinting.Here, we identified 131 imprinted genes in developing endosperms and endosperm at seed germination phase of castor bean, involving into the endosperm development, accumulation of storage compounds and specially seed germination.Our results showed that the transcriptional repression of maternal allele of DNA METHYLTRANSFERASE 1 (MET1) may be required for maternal genome demethylation in the endosperm. DNA methylation analysis showed that only a small fraction of imprinted genes was associated with allele‐specific DNA methylation, and most of them were closely associated with constitutively unmethylated regions (UMRs), suggesting a limited role for DNA methylation in controlling genomic imprinting. Instead, histone modifications can be asymmetrically deposited in maternal and paternal genomes in a DNA methylation‐independent manner to control expression of most imprinted genes.These results expanded our understanding of the occurrence and biological functions of imprinted genes and showed the evolutionary flexibility of the imprinting machinery and mechanisms in plants. Background: Road traffic accident (RTA), an unexpected traumatic event, may not only lead to death and serious physical injuries, but also could put survivors at an increased risk for a wide range of psychiatric disorders, particularly acute stress disorder (ASD). Early assessment of trauma-related psychological responses is important because acute trauma responses in the early post-traumatic period are among the robust predictors of long-term mental health problems. However, estimates of the prevalence of ASD among RTA survivors varied considerably across studies. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to identify the pooled prevalence of ASD among RTA survivors. Methods: A systematic literature search in the databases of PubMed, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, Embase and Web of Science was performed from their inception dates to December 2017. Subject headings were used to identify relevant articles, and the search strategy was adjusted across databases. Heterogeneity across studies was evaluated by Cochran's χ2 test and quantified by the I2 statistic. Subgroup analyses were performed to identify the pooled prevalence in relation to the country of study, instrument used to identify ASD, age, gender and traumatic brain injury. When significant heterogeneity was observed, the influence of some potential moderators was explored using meta-regression analyses. Results: Thirteen eligible studies conducted in 8 countries were included. A total of 2989 RTA survivors were assessed, of which 287 were identified with ASD. The overall heterogeneity was high across studies (I2=96.8%, P < 0.001), and the pooled prevalence of ASD among RTA survivors was 15.81% (95% confidence interval: 8.27–25.14%). Subgroup analyses indicated that the prevalence of ASD among RTA survivors differed significantly with regard to the country of study, instrument used to identify ASD, age and gender (P < 0.05). Meta-regression analyses showed that mean age of participants and quality assessment score were significant moderators for heterogeneity (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Nearly one-sixth of RTA survivors suffer from ASD, indicating the need for regular assessment of early trauma responses among RTA survivors, as well as the importance of implementing early psychological interventions. Background: Little is known about the molecular basis of seed size formation in endospermic seed of dicotyledons. The seed of castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) is considered as a model system in seed biology studies because of its persistent endosperms throughout seed development. Results: We compared the size of endosperm and endospermic cells between ZB107 and ZB306 and found that the larger seed size of ZB107 resulted from a higher cell count in the endosperm, which occupy a significant amount of the total seed volume. In addition, fresh weight, dry weight, and protein content of seeds were remarkably higher in ZB107 than in ZB306. Comparative proteomic and transcriptomic analyses were performed between large-seed ZB107 and small-seed ZB306, using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) and RNA-seq technologies, respectively. A total of 1416 protein species were identified, of which 173 were determined as differentially abundant protein species (DAPs). Additionally, there were 9545 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between ZB306 and ZB107. Functional analyses revealed that these DAPs and DEGs were mainly involved in cell division and the metabolism of carbohydrates and proteins. Conclusions: These findings suggest that both cell number and storage-component accumulation are critical for the formation of seed size, providing new insight into the potential mechanisms behind seed size formation in endospermic seeds. Aim: Long duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) is prevalent and has been shown to be associated with poorer prognosis. Thus, knowledge of its determinants may help to target early interventions to reduce DUP on the needed population. Previous studies seeking to understand determinants of DUP have been inconclusive. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of socio‐demographic characteristics, premorbid functioning, and insight on DUP in patients with first‐episode schizophrenia or schizophreniform disorder. Methods: This cross‐sectional study recruited 110 subjects (aged 18‐65) during a pilot early intervention service for psychosis in Northern Malawi, between June 2009 and September 2012. Short DUP was defined as ≤6 months, whereas long DUP was defined as >6 months. Unadjusted and adjusted analyses were performed to identify determinants of DUP. Results: Of the 110 subjects, 99 (90%) had schizophrenia. Median DUP was 27.5 months, while mean (SD) DUP was 71.24 (92.32) months. In addition, at least 75% had long DUP, which was associated with lower level of education, poor insight, younger age at onset, and at least one parent deceased. Conclusions: Long DUP is prevalent in Northern Malawi. Thus, early interventions to reduce DUP are warranted in this population. Although having at least one parent deceased predicted long DUP in this study, this remains speculative because factors, such as timing of parents' death and grief reactions of the patients were not assessed. PEAR proteins are a type of plant-specific DNA binding with one finger (Dof) transcription factors that play a key role in the regulation of plant growth, especially during phloem cell growth and seed germination in Arabidopsis. However, the identification, characteristics and function of PEAR proteins, particularly in woody plants, need to be further studied. In the present study, 43 candidate PEAR proteins harboring the conserved Zf-Dof domain were obtained in Populus yunnanensis. Based on phylogenetic and structural analysis, 10 representative PEAR candidates were selected, belonging to different phylogenetic groups. The functions of PEAR proteins in the stress response, signal transduction, and growth regulation of stem cambium and roots undergoing vigorous cell division in Arabidopsis were revealed based on their expression patterns as characterized by qRT-PCR analysis, in accordance with the results of cis-element analysis. In vitro experiments showed that the interaction of transcription factor (E2F) and cyclin indirectly reflects the growth regulation function of PEAR through light signaling and cell-cycle regulation. Therefore, our results provide new insight into the identity of PEAR proteins and their function in stress resistance and vigorous cell division regulation of tissues in P. yunnanensis, which may serve as a basis for further investigation of the functions and characteristics of PEAR proteins in other plants. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of anxiety and its associated factors among inpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in China. This study was a cross-sectional study. Inpatients with T2DM admitted to the Endocrinology Department of Xiangya Hospital, Central South University in Hunan Province of China from March 2021 to December 2021 were consecutively included in this study. Participants were interviewed to obtain the data on socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyle characteristics, T2DM-related information, and social support. Anxiety was measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-anxiety subscale by experienced physicians. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the independent contribution of each independent variable to anxiety. A total of 496 inpatients with T2DM were included in this study. The prevalence of anxiety was 21.8% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 18.1%–25.4%). The results of multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that age of at least 60 (adjusted odd ratio [aOR] = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.04–3.08), and having diabetes specific complications (aOR = 4.78, 95% CI: 1.02–22.44) were risk factors for anxiety, and an educational level of high school or above (aOR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.31–0.99), regular physical activity (aOR = 0.36, 95% CI: 0.22–0.58), and high social support (aOR = 0.30, 95% CI: 0.17–0.53) were protective factors for anxiety. A predictive model based on these five variables showed good performance (area under the curve = 0.80). Almost one in five inpatients with T2DM suffered from anxiety in China. Background: Bai people in the Dali Prefecture of Northwest Yunnan, China, have a long history of using plant extracts to dye their traditional costumes and maintain this culture for posterity. However, the development of modern technology, while vastly improving the dyeing efficiency, is also replacing indigenous knowledge which threatens the indigenous practice, causing the latter disappearing gradually. This study sought to examine the indigenous knowledge of plants used for textile dyeing in Bai communities, so as to provide a foundation for their sustainable development. Methods: We conducted a semi-structured interview among 344 informants (above age 36) selected through a snowball sampling method. Free lists and participant observation were used as supplementary methods for the interviews. Three quantitative indicators (informant consensus factor [ICF], use frequency, and cultural importance index [CI]) were used to evaluate the indigenous knowledge of the dye-yielding plants. Results: Twenty-three species belonging to 19 plant taxonomic families were used for dye by Bai communities. We summarized them into four life forms, eight used parts, five colors, three processing methods, and four dyeing methods. Among them, Strobilanthes cusia (Nees) O. Kuntze was the most traditional dyeing plant and has an important cultural value. Location, age, and gender were found to have a significant effect on indigenous knowledge, and the dyeing knowledge was dynamic and influenced by social factors. Conclusions: Diverse plant resources and rich indigenous knowledge of textile dyeing persist at settlements of Bai communities in Dali Prefecture. However, high labor costs and thinning market of traditional products that use plant dye cause repulsion toward traditional practice. To that, a good income in other profession attracts indigenous people to shift from their tradition of making plant-based dye and associated cultural systems at risk of extinction. More research for market development for products that use plant-based dye is necessary for the conservation of this valuable knowledge and biodiversity protection in Bai communities. Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is highly prevalent worldwide and may lead to a higher rate of cognitive dysfunction. This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram‐based model to detect mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in T2DM patients. Methods: Inpatients with T2DM in the endocrinology department of Xiangya Hospital were consecutively enrolled between March and December 2021. Well‐qualified investigators conducted face‐to‐face interviews with participants to retrospectively collect sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, T2DM‐related information, and history of depression and anxiety. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini‐Mental State Examination scale. A nomogram was developed to detect MCI based on the results of the multivariable logistic regression analysis. Calibration, discrimination, and clinical utility of the nomogram were subsequently evaluated by calibration plot, receiver operating characteristic curve, and decision curve analysis, respectively. Results: A total of 496 patients were included in this study. The prevalence of MCI in T2DM patients was 34.1% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 29.9%–38.3%). Age, marital status, household income, diabetes duration, diabetic retinopathy, anxiety, and depression were independently associated with MCI. Nomogram based on these factors had an area under the curve of 0.849 (95% CI: 0.815–0.883), and the threshold probability ranged from 35.0% to 85.0%. Conclusions: Almost one in three T2DM patients suffered from MCI. The nomogram, based on age, marital status, household income, duration of diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, anxiety, and depression, achieved an optimal diagnosis of MCI. Iron walnut (Juglans sigillata Dode) is a native species in southwestern China that exhibits variation in both fruit morphology and shell thickness. However, the underlying molecular processes controlling hardened endocarp development in walnut has not yet been reported. Here, we generated transcriptional profiles of iron walnut endocarp at three developmental stages using "Dapao", the most common commercial variety. Using pairwise comparisons between these three stages, a total of 8555 non-redundant differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, and more than one-half of the total DEGs exhibited significant differential expression in stage I as compared with stage II or stage III, suggesting that the first stage may ultimately determine the final characteristics of the mature walnut shell. Furthermore, in the clustering analysis of the above DEGs, 3682, 2349, and 2388 genes exhibited the highest expression in stages I, II, and III, respectively. GO enrichment analysis demonstrated that the major transcriptional variation among the three developmental stages was caused by differences in cell growth, plant hormones, metabolic process, and phenylpropanoid metabolism. Namely, using the tissue-specific expression analysis and a gene co-expression network, we identified MADS-box transcription factor JsiFBP2 and bHLH transcription factor JsibHLH94 as candidate regulators of endocarp formation in the early stage, and JsiNAC56 and JsiMYB78 might play key roles in regulating the lignification process of endocarp in the late stage. Background: Depression and diabetes are major health challenges, with heavy economic social burden, and comorbid depression in diabetes could lead to a wide range of poor health outcomes. Although many descriptive studies have highlighted the prevalence of comorbid depression and its associated factors, the situation in Hunan, China, remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the prevalence of comorbid depression and associated factors among hospitalized type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in Hunan, China. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 496 patients with T2DM who were referred to the endocrinology inpatient department of Xiangya Hospital affiliated to Central South University, Hunan. Participants' data on socio-demographic status, lifestyle factors, T2DM-related characteristics, and social support were collected. Depression was evaluated using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-depression subscale. All statistical analyses were conducted using the R software version 4.2.1. Results: The prevalence of comorbid depression among hospitalized T2DM patients in Hunan was 27.22% (95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 23.3–31.1%). Individuals with depression differed significantly from those without depression in age, educational level, per capita monthly household income, current work status, current smoking status, current drinking status, regular physical activity, duration of diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, stroke, fatty liver, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy, insulin use, HbA1c, and social support. A multivariable logistic regression model showed that insulin users (adjusted OR = 1.86, 95% CI: 1.02–3.42) had a higher risk of depression, while those with regular physical activity (adjusted OR = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.30–0.77) or greater social support (adjusted OR = 0.20, 95% CI: 0.11–0.34) had a lower risk of depression. The area under the curve of the receiver operator characteristic based on this model was 0.741 with a sensitivity of 0.785 and specificity of 0.615. Conclusions: Depression was moderately prevalent among hospitalized T2DM patients in Hunan, China. Insulin treatment strategies, regular physical activity, and social support were significantly independently associated with depression, and the multivariable model based on these three factors demonstrated good predictivity, which could be applied in clinical practice. An effective method for separating and purifying critical saponins (polyphyllin II and polyphyllin VII) from a Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis extract was developed in this study which was environmentally friendly and economical. Static adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, and the dynamic adsorption-desorption of macroporous resins were investigated, and then the conditions of purification and separation were optimized by fitting with an adsorption thermodynamics equation and a kinetic equation. Effective NKA-9 resin from seven macroporous resins was screened out to separate and purify the two saponins. The static adsorption and dynamic adsorption were chemical and physical adsorption dual-processes on the NKA-9 resin. Under the optimum parameters, the contents of polyphyllin II and polyphyllin VII in the product were 17.3-fold and 28.6-fold those in plant extracts, respectively. The total yields of the two saponins were 93.16%. C2H2 zinc finger (C2H2-ZF) transcription factors participate in various aspects of normal plant growth regulation and stress responses. C1-2i C2H2-ZFs are a special subclass of conserved proteins that contain two ZnF-C2H2 domains. Some C1-2i C2H2-ZFs in Arabidopsis (ZAT) are involved in stress resistance and other functions. However, there is limited information on C1-2i C2H2-ZFs in Populus trichocarpa (PtriZATs). To analyze the function and evolution of C1-2i C2H2-ZFs, eleven PtriZATs were identified in P. trichocarpa, which can be classified into two subgroups. The protein structure, conserved ZnF-C2H2 domains and QALGGH motifs, showed high conservation during the evolution of PtriZATs in P. trichocarpa. The spacing between two ZnF-C2H2 domains, chromosomal locations and cis-elements implied the original proteins and function of PtriZATs. Furthermore, the gene expression of different tissues and stress treatment showed the functional differentiation of PtriZATs subgroups and their stress response function. The analysis of C1-2i C2H2-ZFs in different Populus species and plants implied their evolution and differentiation, especially in terms of stress resistance. Cis-elements and expression pattern analysis of interaction proteins implied the function of PtriZATs through binding with stress-related genes, which are involved in gene regulation by via epigenetic modification through histone regulation, DNA methylation, ubiquitination, etc. Our results for the origin and evolution of PtriZATs will contribute to understanding the functional differentiation of C1-2i C2H2-ZFs in P. trichocarpa. Rapid and efficient construction of expression vectors and subsequent transformation are basic recombinant methods for the investigation of gene functionality. Although novel cloning methods have recently been developed, many laboratories worldwide continue to use traditional restriction digestion-ligation methods to construct expression vectors owing to financial constraints and the unavailability of appropriate vectors. We describe an improved restriction digestion-ligation (IRDL) cloning method that combines the advantage of directional cloning from double digestion-ligation with that of a low background observed by using a positive selection marker gene ccdB to facilitate digestion and ligation in a single tube. The IRDL cloning overcomes the time-consuming and laborious limits of traditional methods, thereby providing an easy-to-use, low-cost, and one-step strategy for directional cloning of target DNA fragments into an expression vector. As a proof-of-concept example, we developed two yeast vectors to demonstrate the feasibility and the flexibility of the IRDL cloning method. Background: Understanding the processes governing angiosperm seed growth and development is essential both for fundamental plant biology and for agronomic purposes. Master regulators of angiosperm seed development are expressed in a seed-specific manner. However, it is unclear how this seed specificity of transcription is established. In some vertebrates, DNA methylation valleys (DMVs) are highly conserved and strongly associated with key developmental genes, but comparable studies in plants are limited to Arabidopsis and soybean. Castor bean (Ricinus communis) is a valuable model system for the study of seed biology in dicots and source of economically important castor oil. Unlike other dicots such as Arabidopsis and soybean, castor bean seeds have a relatively large and persistent endosperm throughout seed development, representing substantial structural differences in mature seeds. Here, we performed an integrated analysis of RNA-seq, whole-genome bisulfite sequencing, and ChIP-seq for various histone marks in the castor bean. Results: We present a gene expression atlas covering 16 representative tissues and identified 1162 seed-specific genes in castor bean (Ricinus communis), a valuable model for the study of seed biology in dicots. Upon whole-genome DNA methylation analyses, we detected 32,567 DMVs across five tissues, covering ~33% of the castor bean genome. These DMVs are highly hypomethylated during development and conserved across plant species. We found that DMVs have the potential to activate transcription, especially that of tissue-specific genes. Focusing on seed development, we found that many key developmental regulators of seed/endosperm development, including AGL61, AGL62, LEC1, LEC2, ABI3, and WRI1, were located within DMVs. ChIP-seq for five histone modifications in leaves and seeds clearly showed that the vast majority of histone modification peaks were enriched within DMVs, and their remodeling within DMVs has a critical role in the regulation of seed-specific gene expression. Importantly, further experiment analysis revealed that distal DMVs may act as cis-regulatory elements, like enhancers, to activate downstream gene expression. Conclusions: Our results point to the importance of DMVs and special distal DMVs behaving like enhancers, in the regulation of seed-specific genes, via the reprogramming of histone modifications within DMVs. Traditional fermented Rosa (TFR) is a typical food and medical product among the Dali Bai people, and its popularity is growing. A few studies have looked into TFR's medicinal advantages, linked germplasm resources, traditional processing procedures, and functional food qualities. Our goal was to look into Rosa's traditional processing, examine the dominant strains in TFR, and prove how these strains affected antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory activities. We used a snowball selection strategy to pick 371 informants for a semi-structured interview, supplemented with direct observations and sample collection. A microbial strain was isolated and identified from a TFR sample collected in the field. We synthesized TFR in the lab using the traditional way. Both of 2, 2-diphenyl-1 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging and tyrosinase inhibitory properties of the fermented solution of Rosa 'Dianhong' have been tested in this study. Altogether 15 species belonging to the genus Rosa, which are utilized in herbal medicine and fermented foods. Rosa 'Dianhong' was the Bai community's principal species with considerable cultural value and consumption. Raw Rosa petals included 15 major flavonoids and phenols, which were identified as TFR's active components. TFR-1 was discovered to be the dominating microbial strain in TFR, increasing total phenolic and flavonoid content in the fermented solution of Rosa 'Dianhong' by 0.45 mg GAE/ml and 0.60 mg RE/ml, respectively, after 30 days. TFR-1 also exhibited promising activity in terms of DPPH free radical scavenging and tyrosinase inhibition. TFR showed potent antioxidant and free-radical scavenger properties and is beneficial in skincare and nutrition, according to the findings. Summary: Background: The aim of this study was to establish the prevalence rate, types and causes of epilepsy, and information on treatment gap of epilepsy in Yueyang city, and to evaluate the diagnosis and treatment status of these patients. Methods: A door-to-door epidemiological survey on epilepsy was conducted by random cluster sampling among the urban and rural populations of Yueyang city, Hunan province, China. The screening questionnaire for epilepsy used in this study was adapted from the WHO and ICBERG standard screening questionnaires. All peoples diagnosed with epilepsy or suspected to be epileptic during screening were rechecked by neurologists. Clinical and treatment data were collected from patients with definitive diagnosis. Results: A total of 32059 peoples were screened. 143 peoples were diagnosed with epilepsy. Lifetime prevalence rate was 4.5‰ and 1-year active prevalence rate was 2.8‰. Prevalence rates were higher in male and rural areas. Secondary generalized tonic–clonic seizure prevailed over other seizure types in frequency. 93.4% of the patients with active epilepsy had treatment gaps without receiving standard and regular antiepileptic drugs before the survey. Conclusions: The prevalence rate of epilepsy in Yueyang is lower than in other areas of China and Asia. The large amount of patients with treatment gaps indicates an urgent need for a rational intervention strategy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L., Euphorbiaceae), a potential biodiesel plant, has created tremendous interest all over the world for the use of its seed oil as a commercial source of biodiesel. Due to the unreliability of oil content in its seeds and low economic returns planting of jatropha in agriculture was restricted. Investigating the molecular basis of storage lipid accumulation during seed development is an immediate need to understand genetic factors regulating storage lipid biosynthesis in jatropha seeds. In this study, we characterized the seed development and lipid accumulation from female flowers pollinated to mature seeds, and investigated temporal expression profiles of 21 lipid genes involved in different steps of the pathways leading to fatty acid and TAG synthesis within jatropha developing seeds using quantitative real-time PCR technology. Concomitantly, 17 genes increased their expression levels in developing seeds compared to their expression in leaf, but showed various temporal expression patterns and different relative-maximum ratio ranging from 2.8 to 1,919,280-fold in developing seeds. Five gene groups with distinct temporal patterns were identified by clustering analysis of expression data. Two gene groups including 15 genes presented up-regulated expression patterns correlated with storage lipid accumulation in developing seeds. This study provided not only the initial information on promoter activity for each gene, but also a first glimpse of the global patterns of gene expression and regulation, which are critical to understand the molecular basis of lipid biosyntheses, identifying the rate-limiting genes during seed development and to create improved varieties by genetic engineering. Abstract: To examine the relationship between fetal gender and postpartum depression, we conducted a cohort study in Changsha, Hunan, China between September 2004 and January 2005. Women aged 18–40 years with their first live birth of a singleton infant who came to hospital for postpartum examination at 6 weeks after childbirth were invited to participate. Women with known psychiatric disorders or a history of psychiatric disorders were excluded. Data on demographic and clinical information were collected. Postpartum depression was assessed by the Chinese version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Fifty-two women (17.3%) were found to have postpartum depression. The rate of postpartum depression in women who gave birth to a female infant was 24.6% while the rate in those women who gave birth to a male infant was 12.2%. The relative risk for postpartum depression of women who gave birth to a female infant as compared with those who gave birth to a male was 2.89, after adjusting for potential confounding by maternal age, education level, family income, living condition, gravidity, number of prenatal care visits, and mode of delivery. We conclude that the risk of postpartum depression is increased in Chinese women who give birth to a female infant as compared to those who gave birth to a male infant. We speculate that this is associated with the negative reactions of family members towards the birth of a female baby. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Because organellar genomes are often uniparentally inherited, chloroplast (cp) and mitochondrial (mt) DNA polymorphisms have become the markers of choice for investigating evolutionary issues such as sex-biased dispersal and the directionality of introgression. To the extent that organellar inheritance is strictly maternal, it has also been suggested that the insertion of transgenes into either the chloroplast or mitochondrial genomes would reduce the likelihood of gene escape via pollen flow from crop fields into wild plant populations. In this paper we describe the adaptation of chloroplast simple sequence repeats (cpSSRs) for use in the Compositae. This work resulted in the identification of 12 loci that are variable across the family, seven of which were further shown to be highly polymorphic within sunflower ( Helianthus annuus). We then used these markers, along with a novel mtDNA restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), to investigate the mode of organellar inheritance in a series of experimental crosses designed to mimic the initial stages of crop-wild hybridization in sunflower. Although we cannot rule out the possibility of extremely rare paternal transmission, our results provide the best evidence to date of strict maternal organellar inheritance in sunflower, suggesting that organellar gene containment may be a viable strategy in sunflower. Background: Homelessness is a compelling public health problem, and homeless individuals are at increased risk for attempting suicide. However, the reported lifetime prevalence of suicidal attempt among homeless individuals in North America varied considerably. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to estimate the pooled lifetime prevalence of suicidal attempt among homeless individuals in North America and explore factors that may moderate this estimation.Methods: The protocol was registered in PROSPERO database (CRD42018102593). A systematic literature search was conducted in the electronic databases of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar. Observational studies exploring the lifetime prevalence of suicidal attempt among homeless individuals in North America were included. Heterogeneity across studies was evaluated using the Cochran Q test and quantified using the I2 statistic. Subgroup analyses were performed to identify possible sources of heterogeneity.Results: Twenty-two eligible studies with a total of 9,727 homeless individuals were included, of which 2,986 reported having attempted suicide in their lifetime. A high degree of heterogeneity (I2=96.4%, P<0.001) was observed, and the pooled lifetime prevalence was 31.83% (95% confidence interval: 26.87%-36.99%). Subgroup analyses showed that the heterogeneity was quite low when estimating the pooled lifetime prevalence of suicidal attempt among heterosexual (I2=0.0, P=0.401) and non-heterosexual homeless individuals (I2=0.0, P=0.405).Limitations: All eligible studies were exclusively conducted in the US and Canada.Conclusions: Nearly three tenths of homeless individuals in North America have attempted suicide in their lifetime, and the differences in sexual orientation might have contributed to the heterogeneity. Pregnancy is a time of increased vulnerability for the development of anxiety and depression. The purpose of this study was to compare the risk of developing adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes between pregnant women with moderate-severe depression and those who had mild depression. Our study was performed in a prospective cohort of 360 depressed pregnant women, recruited and followed up to delivery at the Adventist Hospital in Bekwai Municipality, Ghana. The research began in February 2020 and the follow-up was completed in August 2020. The pregnant women who had depression were classified into two groups: those who had moderate-severe depression (Patient Health Questionnaires-9 (PHQ-9) score ≥15) and those who had mild depression (PHQ-9 score <15). Crude and adjusted relative risk (RR) with their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for women with moderate-severe depression as compared with women with mild depression were then estimated. Out of a total of 360 pregnant women, 43 (11.9%) screened positive for moderate-severe depression. After adjusting for potential confounders, women with moderate-severe depression during pregnancy, as compared with women who had mild depression had an increased risk of pre-eclampsia (RR adjusted = 2.01; 95% CI:1.21–3.33); Caesarean section (RR adjusted = 1.78; 95% CI:1.18–2.70); and episiotomy (RR adjusted = 1.66; 95% CI: 1.06–2.60). On the other hand, no statistically significant association of severity of depression and perinatal outcomes was observed. Compared with mild depression, symptoms of moderate-severe depression in pregnancy significantly increased risks of adverse maternal outcomes such as pre-eclampsia, caesarean section delivery, and episiotomy. Plant dwarfism is a desirable agronomic trait in non-timber trees, but little is known about the physiological and molecular mechanism underlying dwarfism in woody plants. Castor bean (Ricinus communis) is a typical woody oilseed crop. We performed cytological observations within xylem, phloem and cambia tissues, revealing that divergent cell growth in all tissues might play a role in the dwarf phenotype in cultivated castor bean. Based on bulked segregant analyses for a F2 population generated from the crossing of a tall and a dwarf accession, we identified two QTLs associated with plant height, covering 325 candidate genes. One of these, Rc5NG4-1 encoding a putative IAA transport protein localized in the tonoplast was functionally characterized. A non-synonymous SNP (altering the amino acid sequence from Y to C at position 218) differentiated the tall and dwarf plants and we confirmed, through heterologous yeast transformation, that the IAA uptake capacities of Rc5NG4-1Y and Rc5NG4-1C were significantly different. This study provides insights into the physiological and molecular mechanisms of dwarfing in woody non-timber economically important plants, with potential to aid in the genetic breeding of castor bean and other related crops. Previous studies on the association between chemokines concentrations and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) yielded inconsistent results. Therefore, the purpose of this network meta -analysis was to summarize these results. The databases of PubMed, Web of Science, Psyc-ARTICLES, Embase and Cochrane Library were searched for relevant articles published not later than January 15, 2020. Then, eligible studies were selected based on predefined study selection criteria. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated as group differences in chemokines concentrations. Moreover, network meta-analysis was used to rank chemokines effect values according to their respective surface under cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) probabilities. A total of 18 eligible studies that investigated the association between 9 different chemokines and PTSD were identified. They involved 1,510 patients and 2,012 controls. Results of the meta-analysis showed that the concentrations of CCL3, CCL4 and CCL5 in the PTSD patients were significantly higher than that in the controls (SMDs of 4.12, 6.11 and 1.53 respectively). However, although not statistically significant, concentrations of CCL2 tended to be lower in PTSD patients than in the controls (SMD = -0.76); whereas concentrations of CXCL12 tended to be higher in PTSD patients than in the controls (SMD = 0.37). SUCRA probabilities showed that, among all the chemokines studied, the effect of CCL5 was the highest in PTSD patients. Concentrations of CCL3, CCL4 and CCL5 may be associated with a trauma and/or PTSD. Also, CXCL12 and CCL2 may be the underlying biomarkers for trauma and/or PTSD. Thus, future studies with large population based samples are needed to further assess these associations. Accumulating evidence suggests that chemokines may play an important role in the formation and mediating of the immune microenvironment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The purpose of this meta-analysis was to explore the differences in blood or tissues chemokines concentrations between HCC patients and controls. Online databases, namely PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane Library, were systematically searched for relevant articles published on or before 15 January 2020. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals of the chemokines concentrations were calculated as group differences between the HCC patients and the controls. Sixty-five studies met the inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. Altogether they consisted of 26 different chemokines compared between 5828 HCC patients and 4909 controls; and 12 different chemokines receptors compared between 2053 patients and 2285 controls. The results of meta-analysis indicated that concentrations of CCL20, CXCL8 and CXCR4 in the HCC patients were significantly higher than those in the controls (SMD of 6.18, 1.81 and 1.04, respectively). Therefore, higher concentration levels of CCL20, CXCL8 and CXCR4 may indicate the occurrence of HCC Future research should explore the putative mechanisms underlying this linkage. Meanwhile, attempts can be made to replicate the existing findings in prospective cohort populations and explore the cause-and-effect relationships pertaining to this linkage in order to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for HCC. SUMMARY: Natural plant dyes have been developed and used across many traditional societies worldwide. The blue pigment indigo has seen widespread usage across South America, Egypt, Europe, India and China for thousands of years, mainly extracted from indigo‐rich plants. The utilization and genetic engineering of indigo in industries and ethnobotanical studies on the effects of cultural selection on plant domestication are limited due to lack of relevant genetic and genomic information of dye plants. Strobilanthes cusia (Acanthaceae) is a typical indigo‐rich plant important to diverse ethnic cultures in many regions of Asia. Here we present a chromosome‐scale genome for S. cusia with a genome size of approximately 865 Mb. About 79% of the sequences were identified as repetitive sequences and 32 148 protein‐coding genes were annotated. Metabolic analysis showed that the main indigoid pigments (indican, indigo and indirubin) were mainly synthesized in the leaves and stems of S. cusia. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the expression level of genes encoding metabolic enzymes such as monooxygenase, uridine diphosphate‐glycosyltransferase and β‐glucosidase were significantly changed in leaves and stems compared with root tissues, implying their participation in indigo biosynthesis. We found that several gene families involved in indigo biosynthesis had undergone an expansion in number, with functional differentiation likely facilitating indigo biosynthesis in S. cusia. This study provides insight into the physiological and molecular bases of indigo biosynthesis, as well as providing genomic data that provide the basis for further study of S. cusia cultivation by Asia's traditional textile producers. Significance Statement: Here we add a new and comprehensive genomic dataset for dye and the medicinal plant Strobilanthes cusia as well as identify many candidate genes involved in indigo biosynthesis in S. cusia. Methods: A total of 140 subjects with first episode psychosis (FEP) were enrolled from a pilot early intervention service for psychosis in Northern Malawi between June 2009 and September 2012. Logistic regression analyses were used to quantify the associations between variables of interest. Results: Age ranged between 18 and 65 at assessment, with median, 33. Median DUP was 12.5 months. First contact did not independently determine DUP. Long DUP (>6 months) was associated with referral from community based volunteer (CBV) or traditional healer (TH), a unit increase in severity of negative symptoms and having schizophrenia, which was also associated with referral from CBV or TH. Additionally, being unemployed was associated with referral from CBV or TH. However, a unit increase in the number of times religious advice (RA) was sought, GP was contacted and severity of positive symptoms was associated with referral by GP. Conclusions: Mental health awareness is justified for this population and collaboration with THs in identifying and treating patients with psychosis may help reduce treatment delays. Access to mental health services ought to improve, particularly for the unemployed group. Soil salinity is a major source of abiotic plant stress, adversely affecting plant growth, development and productivity. Although the physiological and molecular mechanisms that underlie plant responses to salt stress are becoming increasingly understood, epigenetic modifications, such as histone methylations and their potential regulation of the transcription of masked genes at the genome level in response to salt stress, remain largely unclear. Castor bean, an important nonedible oil crop, has evolved the capacity to grow under salt stress. Here, based on high-throughput RNA-seq and ChIP-seq data, we systematically investigated changes in genomic transcription and histone methylation using typical histone H3 lysine 4 trimethylation (H3K4me3) and histone H3 tri-methylated lysine 27 (H3K27me3) markers in castor bean leaves subjected to salt stress. The results showed that gain or loss of histone methylation was closely associated with activated or repressed gene expression, though variations in both transcriptome and histone methylation modifications were relatively narrow in response to salt stress. Diverse salt responsive genes and switched histone methylation sites were identified in this study. In particular, we found for the first time that the transcription of the key salt-response regulator RADIALIS-LIKE SANT (RSM1), a MYB-related transcription factor involved in ABA(abscisic acid)-mediated salt stress signaling, was potentially regulated by bivalent H3K4me3-H3K27me3 modifications. Combining phenotypic variations with transcriptional and epigenetic changes, we provide a comprehensive profile for understanding histone modification, genomic transcription and their associations in response to salt stress in plants. The interaction of gut microbiota, related metabolites and inflammation factors with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclearly defined. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to synthesize previous study findings to better understand this interaction. Relevant research articles published not later than September, 2019 were searched in the following databases: Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library. The search strategy and inclusion criteria for this study yielded a total of 47 studies, of which only 11 were eligible for meta-analysis. The narrative analysis of these articles found that there is interplay between the key gut microbiota, related metabolites and inflammation factors, which modulate the development and progression of NAFLD. In addition, the results of meta-analysis showed that probiotic supplementation significantly decreased tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in NAFLD patients (standardized mean difference (SMD) = −0.52, confidence interval (CI): −0.86 to −0.18, and p = 0.003) and C-reactive protein (CRP) (SMD = −0.62, CI: −0.80 to −0.43, and p < 0.001). However, whether therapies can target TNF-α and CRP in order treat NAFLD still needs further investigation. Therefore, these results suggest that the interaction of the key gut microbiota, related metabolites and inflammation factors with NAFLD may provide a novel therapeutic target for the clinical and pharmacological treatment of NAFLD. Objective: Anastomotic leakage (AL) is a catastrophic surgical complication affecting the prognosis of patients after colorectal surgery. We aimed to determine the value of the arterial calcification (AC) score in predicting AL. Methods: Medline and Embase were searched through November 2019. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to estimate the association between AC and AL after colorectal surgery. The fixed-effects model or random-effects model was adopted for data pooling. Subgroup analyses were conducted to assess the effect of different aortoiliac trajectories. Results: Four studies involving 496 patients were included. The calcium volume and calcium score measurements of different trajectories revealed a significant difference with regard to the left and right common iliac arteries, the superior mesenteric artery, and the left common iliac artery. Calcification of the internal iliac artery significantly increased the risk of AL compared with no AL (OR = 1.005; 95% CI 1.002–1.009; P = 0.005), as did calcification of the left internal iliac artery (OR = 1.009; 95% CI 1.002–1.016; P = 0.011), but not of the common iliac artery (OR = 1.001; 95% CI 1.000–1.001; P = 0.317) or common and internal iliac artery (OR = 1.000; 95% CI 1.000–1.000; P = 1.000). Objective: Fetuin-A has been associated with the progression of metabolic syndrome, but previous studies found inconsistent results on the relationship between metabolic syndrome and the concentration of fetuin-A. The aim of this study was to perform a meta-analysis to summarize previous findings on this relationship. Method: This study was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews PROSPERO (CRD42019129566). Studies examining the relationship between metabolic syndrome and the concentration of circulating fetuin-A were identified using a systematic search in the electronic databases of Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library before March 2019. A random effects model was used to summarize the effect size of the association in terms of the standardized mean difference (SMD). Results: Fourteen eligible studies compared fetuin-A concentrations between 4,551 metabolic syndrome patients and 8,805 controls. The circulating fetuin-A concentration was significantly higher in the metabolic syndrome patients than in the controls (SMD = 0.65, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.48 to 0.83, Z = 7.18, p<0.001). Besides, circulating fetuin-A was a risk factor for metabolic syndrome (odds ratio 1.23, 95% CI: 1.08 to 1.40). Conclusion: These findings suggest that fetuin-A may be an important indicator for metabolic syndrome, in which case this may lead to new perspectives in early diagnosis, identification of novel biomarkers, and providing novel targets for pharmacological interventions. Objective: Previous studies found inconsistent results on the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and concentrations of 24-hour (24-h) urinary cortisol. This study performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize previous findings on this relationship. Methods: We searched in the databases of Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Psyc-ARTICLES for articles published before September 2018. We used the random-effects model with restricted maximum-likelihood estimator to synthesize the effect sizes by calculating the standardized mean difference (SMD) and assessing its significance. Results: Six hundred and nineteen articles were identified from the preceding databases and 20 of them were included in the meta-analysis. Lower concentrations of 24-h urinary cortisol were observed in patients with PTSD when compared with the controls (SMD = -0.49, 95%CI [-0.91; -0.07], p = 0.02). Subgroup analysis revealed that the concentrations of 24-h urinary cortisol were lower in PTSD patients than in the controls for studies that included female participants or studies that included participants from the United States of America. Conclusions: Overall, decreased levels of 24-h urinary cortisol were linked with the pathophysiology of PTSD. Nonetheless, more studies should be conducted to validate the molecular underpinnings of urine cortisol degeneration in PTSD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The purpose of this study was to gain a general overview of the time management disposition of clinical nursing managers in China and its related factors. Background: Effective time management is important for managers to achieve organizational goals. However, there is a lack of big‐sample research exploring the impact of psychological and socio‐demographic characteristics on time management disposition. Method: The study adopted a cross‐sectional and descriptive design; 531 nursing managers from seven regions of China were recruited. Results: The nursing managers performed best on sense of time's value, followed by time monitoring ability and sense of time efficacy. Time management disposition was predicted by self‐efficacy, SDS scores, managerial experience, the character strength of self‐control and number of children. Conclusion: The "norm" level of the Chinese clinical nursing managers' time management disposition was at a favourable level, but these managers performed poorly in the aspect of time monitoring. It is recommended that actions be taken to improve nursing managers' time management disposition in order to maximize their time‐use efficiency and enhance the quality of nursing management. Implications for Nursing Management: A greater understanding of nursing managers' time management disposition will provide a reference for subsequent actions to improve nursing managers' time management behaviour, which in turn will improve the quality and efficiency of nursing management. Objective: Previous studies found inconsistent results on the relationship between diabetes mellitus and concentrations of omentin-1. This study performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize previous findings on this relationship. Methods: Studies related to this outcome were obtained using a systematic search in the electronic databases of Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, SCOPUS, Google Scholar, gray literature and Web of Science in September 2019. The random effects model was used to measure the strength of the association between diabetes mellitus and concentrations of omentin-1, using standardized mean difference. Results: Forty-two eligible studies were included in the final meta-analysis. There was no significant difference in omentin-1 concentration between patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and the controls. On the other hand, lower concentration levels of omentin-1 were observed in patients with gestational diabetes mellitus (standardized mean difference:-0.44, 95% confidence interval:-0.76; -0.12, p = 0.007), or type 2 diabetes mellitus (standardized mean difference: -1.74, 95% confidence interval: -2.31; -1.16, p< 0.001) than in the controls. Conclusion: Decreased omentin-1 concentrations may be an important indicator for gestational diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Background. Hypertension is an independent risk factor of cardiovascular disease, which is one of the biggest health challenges today. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of the problem and other factors related to hypertension among women who are 25 years and above. Methods. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from September and November 2017. A multistage cluster sampling technique was used to select the study participants. The data was collected using a structured questionnaire and physical measurements adapted from "WHO STEPwise approach to chronic disease risk factor surveillance (STEPS)." Data were examined using the SPSS program IBM version 20. Descriptive statistics, including proportions, frequencies, and cross-tabulations, were used to summarize the study variables. A binary logistic regression was fitted variable with a p value of < 0.7. The bivariable analyses were entered in the multivariable analysis to control the possible effect of confounders. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with hypertension. The Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with a 95 % Confidence Interval (CI) was computed to show the level of certainty. A p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results. The study indicated that the prevalence of hypertension (BP ≥ 140/90 mmHg) was 33.8% (95% CI 27.4-40.2) which increased with age. At the time of the study, women aged 45-64 years [AOR =2.19, (95% CI: 1.11-4.34, p<0.02)] and 65+ years [AOR =5.13, (95% CI: 2.20-11.99), p<0.001] were two to five times as likely as those with age of 25-44 years to be hypertensive. Women who had a higher body mass index (BMI) ≥30 kg/m2 were two times as likely as those with normal weight to be hypertensive [AOR 2.38, (95% CI; 1.14-4.95, p<0.02)]. Women who did not consume fresh fruit daily were three times as likely as those women who consume fresh fruit daily to be hypertensive [AOR 3.17 (95% CI; 1.05-9.55, p<0.04)]. Conclusion. Increasing age, obesity, and women who did not consume fresh fruits daily were associated with hypertension, indicating opportunities for health education and other prevention measures. Background. Dysmenorrhea has been the most common gynecological problem worldwide. Reports of dysmenorrhea are greatest among individuals in their late teens and 20s and usually declining with age. It has also been reported that dysmenorrhea affects more than 80% of women in the reproductive age. The study objective was to examine the predictors of dysmenorrhea, its effect, and coping mechanisms among adolescents in Shai Osudoku District, Ghana. Methods. We conducted a cross-sectional study in September and November 2017 in selected schools in Shai Osudoku District, Ghana. We employed self-administered questionnaire to obtain data from adolescents volunteered to participate in the study. We analyzed the data using the SPSS programme IBM version 20. We used the Pearson chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis to assess the association between exposure variables and the outcome variable. The odds ratio was reported to establish the risk of dysmenorrhea at a confidence interval of 95%, and statistical significance was assumed at p<0.05. Results. The prevalence of dysmenorrhea was 68.1% (95% CI, 65.0–72.0) with one-third recounting their pain as severe. The pain during menstruation negatively influences the daily physical activities (22.5%), school attendance (6.9%), concentration during classes' hours (27.9%), and academic performance (31.1%) of the respondents. Besides, adolescents who do not live with their parent experienced a 53.1% increase in odds of self-reporting dysmenorrhea (AOR, 1.53 (95% CI, 1.02–2.23)). Similarly, respondents who had irregular menstrual cycle experienced a 72.5% increase in odds of self-reporting dysmenorrhea (AOR, 1.73 (95% CI, 1.16–2.57)). Finally, a significant association between irregular menstrual cycle (p<0.01), not lived with their parent (p<0.04), and self-reported dysmenorrhea was found. Conclusion. Background: Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is positive psychological changes after encountering challenging events. The main purpose of this meta-analysis was to summarize the prevalence of moderate-to-high PTG in people who experienced traumatic events and to understand what social-demographic and trauma characteristics distinguish those who show a high rate of PTG from those of low level.Methods: Six electronic databases were searched. Loney's appraisal criteria were used to evaluate the quality of studies. Freeman-Turkey double arcsine transformation method was used to calculate the combined prevalence. Age, time since event, type of trauma and trauma form were analyzed as subgroup factors. According to the source of the trauma, the type of trauma was divided into three different categories: disease, accident and specific profession. Specific profession refers to firefighters, veterans, intensive care staff, etc. The complex working environment, irregular lifestyle, various unpredictable factors, as well as the frequently adverse stimuli from others contribute to great physical and mental pressure.Results: Twenty-six articles were deemed as qualified for this systematic review and meta-analysis. The level of PTG across studies ranged from 10% to 77.3%, and heterogeneity tests showed high heterogeneity (I2 = 92.3%, 95%CI = 90.1%-94.0%, p < 0.01). Random effect model was chosen to calculate the combined prevalence and the prevalence was 52.58% (95%CI = 48.66%-56.48%). People whose age was younger than 60,had shorter time since trauma,worked in a specific profession and suffered from direct trauma reported high rate of moderate-to-high PTG.Limitations: Because the included studies haven't provided adequate PTG-related information, these factors could not be used to performed subgroup analyses. In addition, some studies were excluded due to the different standard may lead to deviation of the combined prevalence.Conclusions: Nearly half of the investigated individuals reported moderate-to-high PTG after experiencing a traumatic event. Summary: Long non‐coding RNAs (lncRNAs) serve as versatile regulators of plant growth and development. The potential functions and inheritance patterns of lncRNAs, as well as the epigenetic regulation of lncRNA itself, remain largely uncharacterized in plant seeds, especially in the persistent endosperm of the dicotyledons. In this study, we investigated diverse RNA‐seq data and catalogued 5356 lncRNAs in castor bean seeds. A small fraction of lncRNAs were transcribed from the same direction as the promoters of protein‐coding genes (PCgenes) and exhibited strongly coordinated expression with the nearby PCgene. Co‐expression analysis with weighted gene co‐expression network analysis (WGCNA) showed these lncRNAs to be involved in differential transcription networks between the embryo and endosperm in the early developing seed. Genomic DNA methylation analyses revealed that the expression level of lncRNAs was tightly linked to DNA methylation and that endosperm hypomethylation could promote the expression of linked lncRNAs. Intriguingly, upon hybridization, most lncRNAs with divergent genome sequences between two parents could be reconciled and were expressed according to their parental genome contribution; however, some deviation in the expression of allelic lncRNAs was observed and found to be partially dependent on parental effects. In triploid endosperm, the expression of most lncRNAs was not dosage sensitive, as only 20 lncRNAs had balanced dosage. Our findings not only demonstrate that lncRNAs play potential roles in regulating the development of castor bean endosperm and embryo, but also provide novel insights into the parental effects, allelic expression and epigenetic regulation of lncRNAs in dicotyledonous seeds. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) is usually a reliable technique to find the binding sites of a transcription factor. In the current study, we developed a suitable ChIP method using developing castor bean seeds. A castor bean seed with large and persistent endosperm contains high amounts of storage lipids (ca. 50–60%) and is often considered as a model material to studying seed biology. In oleaginous seeds, due to the rich oils which could seriously affect immunoprecipitation and DNA isolation, it is often difficult to carry out a successful ChIP experiment. Thus, the development of an efficient ChIP method for oleaginous seeds is required. In this study, we modified different steps, including tissue preparation for cross-linking, chromatin washing, sonication and immunoprecipitation of other existing methods. As exemplified by the targeted gene identification of a master regulator WRI1, which regulates fatty acid biosynthesis, we found that the improved ChIP method worked well. We analyzed percentage input and fold changes of the ChIPed DNA. We also made successful ChIP-seq libraries using this method. This method provides a technical support not only for use on castor bean seeds; it might be used equally to analyze protein-DNA interaction in vivo in other oleaginous seeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seeds are highly specific organs that strongly sink sucrose resources from leaf and stem tissues to trigger seed metabolism and development. In particular, for heterotrophic non-green seeds, the potential molecular mechanism underlying sucrose-driven seed development remains unanswered. Castor bean ( Ricinus communis L.), a typical non-green seed, has been considered as a model plant for seed biology study in dicotyledonous plants due to its heterotrophic seeds with persistent endosperms. In the present study, the fast-developing castor bean seeds were treated with exogenous sucrose and mannitol for four hours. The global transcriptomic data were obtained by high-throughput RNA-seq technique, resulting in 468 differentially expressed genes (DGEs). Further analyses revealed that sucrose functioned as both metabolic substrates and signal molecules. Specifically, 73 DGEs involved in carbohydrate and nitrogen metabolism, 42 differentially expressed transcription factors, and 35 DGEs involved in diverse signaling pathways such as auxin, brassinosteroid, ethelyene, cytokinin, gibberellin, and calcium signals, were identified, suggesting that the sucrose signaling pathway might have complex and multi-connected cross-talks with other signals to regulate castor bean seed development. Taken together, this study provides novel data to improve understanding of the potential molecular mechanisms of sucrose in regulating non-green seed development and storage reservoir accumulation during seed development.
