How do technology resources such as computer ownership help create opportunity equality and facilitate income mobility? This is an important question because opportunity constraint, or the lack of opportunity equality, often manifests in low income mobility in many countries. This study addresses this question by examining the spillover effects of computer ownership of households in terms of household income mobility considering spatial proximity and social proximity. Drawing on knowledge spillovers theory, we hypothesize that households experience upward income mobility due to increased computer ownership among households in spatial proximity. Further, drawing on social capital theory, we hypothesize that households experience higher upward mobility due to increased computer ownership among households in the region that are socially proximate or in the same caste. Our empirical analysis of data from over 32,000 households across all states in India from two waves (2005 and 2011) of the Indian Human Development Survey supports our hypotheses. Our exploratory analyses suggest that households in regions with high social harmony experience higher upward income mobility from increased computer ownership among households in the region. We also found that increased computer ownership among households in the region helps households belonging to disadvantaged castes overcome low income mobility. Overall, the study shows how the returns to computer ownership in terms of household upward income mobility go beyond private returns, and spill over to other households in spatial proximity, particularly to those belonging to the same caste. A key implication for policymakers is to use twin levers of social harmony and technology resources to create opportunity equality to facilitate income mobility, instead of focusing solely on technology resources. Background: Tumor metastasis is responsible for approximately 90% of mortality in lung cancer. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of lung cancer metastasis is crucial for developing new treatment strategies. Cellular prion protein (PrPc), encoded by PRNP gene, was previously found to enhance lung cancer invasiveness. However, research on the post-transcriptional regulation of PRNP remains limited. Methods: Dual-luciferase reporter assays identified miRNAs targeting the PRNP 3'-UTR, and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) confirmed the interaction between miR-193b-3p and PRNP mRNA. Promoter deletions and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays established c-Jun as a transcriptional repressor of miR-193b-3p. Functional validation of the c-Jun-miR-193b-3p-PrPc axis was conducted using transwell assays, LNA-in situ hybridization, RT-PCR, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry. Subcutaneous mouse xenograft models assessed the anti-tumor effects of miR-193b-3p in vivo. Results: We demonstrated that miR-193b-3p downregulates PrPc expression by directly targeting the 3'-UTR of PRNP. Overexpression of miR-193b-3p significantly suppressed PRNP expression at both mRNA and protein levels, and reduced lung cancer cell migration, invasion and proliferation, which was reversed by PrPc overexpression. Conversely, miR-193b-3p silencing enhanced PRNP expression as well as those oncogenic properties, which were mitigated by PRNP knockdown. Spearman correlation analysis revealed a significant negative association between miR-193b-3p and PrPc expression in lung cancer tissues (p = 0.017), and Kaplan–Meier survival analysis demonstrated that high PrPc (p = 0.039) or low miR-193b-3p (p = 0.027) expression correlated with poorer overall survival. Intra-tumoral injection of the miR-193b-3p mimic in mouse xenograft models significantly reduced tumor volume. In addition, c-Jun was identified as a transcriptional repressor of miR-193b-3p. Functional studies revealed that c-Jun knockdown inhibited lung cancer cell migration, invasion, and proliferation, effects that were reversed by either PrPc overexpression or miR-193b-3p inhibitor treatment. A significant association between PrPc and c-Jun expression in lung cancer tissues (p = 0.004) was observed. High expression of PrPc and/or c-Jun was found to be associated with poor overall survival of patients (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study is the first to uncover a novel regulatory pathway where c-Jun acts as a transcriptional repressor of miR-193b-3p, leading to PRNP upregulation, which promotes lung cancer migration and invasion. This previously unrecognized c-Jun-miR-193b-3p-PrPc axis also provides valuable insights for the potential development of new therapeutic strategies against lung cancer metastasis through RNA-targeting technology. Fueled by remarkable developments in mobile and wearable technologies coupled with the power of the Internet a multibillion industry constructed on digital platforms, Connected Fitness, has emerged. Sustained engagement is a crucial prerequisite for healthy behavior, and platforms that offer connected fitness services must contend with the challenge of engaging new users. In this study, we examine whether a virtual race, an event in which runners can participate remotely in an organized activity, can serve as an effective strategy to amplify users' long-term engagement related to healthy behavior. We study the impact of offering virtual races to runners on a digital fitness platform on their engagement with the platform and level of physical activity. Leveraging the match of the theme of the virtual races and users' zodiac signs as the instrument to support causal inference, we find that a virtual race increases the engagement of new users by 42.8 days and total spending on related e-commerce on the platform by 48.4% during our study period. We also find that the positive impact of virtual races transcends the typical mechanism of social connections; results show that virtual races can increase the engagement with the platform even when their social connections are low. Finally, we find that existing users who participate in a virtual race outrun those in the control group by 4.41 km in a three-week period. Our study highlights the potential of new forms of digital interactions, powered by mobile and wearable technologies, on user behavior in fitness platforms. How do investors' risk preferences influence the relationships between investors' online channel use intensity and both their trading behaviors and performance? This study answers this important question even as investors are increasingly rely on the Internet for their trading activities. We leverage rare and unique micro-level historical dataset from more than 7,000 investor accounts over a 44-month period between 2010 and 2013 at a large brokerage firm in China. The dataset and analyses enable us to provide new insights into how investors' online channel use intensity and risk preferences jointly influence their trading behaviors and performance, even though some other aspects of financial markets have changed considerably over the years. The findings reveal that although online channel use intensity is associated with increased trading volume, trading frequency, and investment returns, these effects differ across investors with different risk preferences. We find that while online channel use intensity has strong positive effects on transaction frequency for both risk-seeking and risk-averse investors, it has a much lower effect on trading volume for risk-averse investors than for risk-seeking investors. We further find that risk-averse investors with higher online channel use intensity outperform investors with other risk preferences in terms of investment performance. This paper contributes to the emerging literature at the intersection of information systems and behavioral finance by revealing the moderating role of risk preferences in the relationships between investors' online trading channel use intensity and both their trading behaviors and outcomes. Neuronal loss is a hallmark of stroke and other neurodegenerative diseases, and as such, neuronal loss caused by microglia has been thought to be a contributing factor to disease progression. Here, we show that microglia indeed contribute significantly to neuronal loss in a mouse model of stroke, but this microglial-dependent process of neuronal clearance specifically targets stressed and degenerating neurons in the ischemic cortical region and not healthy non-ischemic neurons. Nonspecific stimulation of microglia decreased the density of neurons in the ischemic cortical region, whereas specific inhibition of MFG-E8 signaling, which is required for microglial phagocytosis of neurons, had the opposite effect. In both scenarios, the effects were microglia specific, as the same treatments had no effect in mice whose microglia were depleted prior to stroke. Finally, even though the inhibition of MFG-E8 signaling increased neuronal density in the ischemic brain region, it substantially exacerbated the development of cortical infarction. In conclusion, microglia through MFG-E8 signaling contribute to the loss of ischemic neurons and, in doing so, minimize the development of cortical infarction after stroke. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the consensus that information security should become an important consideration in information technology (IT) governance rather than the sole responsibility of the IT department, important IT governance decisions are often made on the basis of fulfilling business needs with a minimal amount of attention paid to their implications for information security. We study how an important IT governance mechanism—the degree of centralized decision making—affects the likelihood of cybersecurity breaches. Examining a sample of 504 U.S. higher-education institutions over a four-year period, we find that a university with centralized IT governance is associated with fewer breaches. Interestingly, the effect of centralized IT governance is contingent on the heterogeneity of a university's computing environment: Universities with more heterogeneous IT infrastructure benefit more from centralized IT decision making. In addition, we find the relationship between centralized governance and cybersecurity breaches is most pronounced in public universities and those with more intensive research activities. Collectively, these findings highlight the tradeoff between granting autonomy and flexibility in the use of information systems and enforcing standardized, organization-wide security protocols.
