12. Effects of different drying methods on the reconstituability of kudzu powder-fatty acid complexes

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to improve the reconstituability of kudzu powder. Methods: The kudzu powder-fatty acid complexes were prepared by different drying methods after co-gelatinization of kudzu powder with lauric acid, and investigated the effects of drying methods on the instant properties of the complexes from the changes of crystal structure, microstructure, bulk density, water absorption index and swelling power. Results: The drying method influenced the water absorption capacity of the complexes, there by affected the reconstituability of the complexes. Compared with oven drying and far-infrared drying, the complexes prepared by spray drying and freeze-drying had lower bulk density, more uneven particle surface and more amorphous structures, which made them more absorbent and better reconstituability. Conclusion: The agglomeration rate of the spray-dried and freeze-dried complexes was 4.6%~6.0% after directly mixing with hot water at (95±2) ℃, which was 36.3% lower than that of the native kudzu powder, indicating that the kudzu powder-fatty acid complexes have the potential to be developed into hot water ready-to-eat kudzu powder.

40. Fluorescent phosphine oxide-containing hyperbranched polyesters: design, synthesis and their application for Fe3+ detection.

Abstract

Herein, fluorescent phosphine oxide-containing hyperbranched polyesters (HBPs) were synthesized via the solvent-free polycondensation of 3-((4-((bis(hydroxymethyl)phosphoryl)methyl)phenethyl)thio) propanoic acid (BHPA) or its methyl ester derivative (MBHP) by adding trimethylolpropane as the core for the first time. As a clusteroluminogen (CLgen), the hyperbranched polyesters (HBPn , n = 1–4) carrying no conventional chromophores exhibited bright blue fluorescence under the irradiation of 365 nm ultraviolet light. This photoluminescence was attributed to the clustering of electron-rich moieties (i.e., C＝O, P＝O and OH). HBP2 in dimethylformamide showed clear concentration-enhanced emission (CEE) as well as excitation-dependent emission (EDE) characteristics. In addition, HBP2 was proved to be a selective and sensitive sensor for Fe3+ detection due to its good linearly fluorescence quenching response with a low detection limit (0.59 μM). Abstract

Preparing a polylactide (PLA)/plasticizer system has been regarded as an effective solution to improve the ductility of brittle PLA. In this reach, a novel type of alkyl phosphine oxides consisting of three aliphatic ester substituents was prepared from PH3 tail gas, and its potential to be employed as a PLA plasticizer was studied. Differential scanning calorimeter tests confirmed that the newly‐prepared plasticizer decreased the Tg of PLA (28 wt% plasticizer) from 52°C (neat PLA) to 11°C, and increased the elongation at break from 11% (neat PLA) to 271% (plasticized PLA). X‐ray diffraction results showed that the crystallization degree of PLA (28 wt% plasticizer) increased from 0.12% of neat PLA to 14.04%, while Young's modulus of PLA remained as high as 121.3 MPa, which was much higher than that of the PLA/citrate ester systems with same plasticizer content. These novel phosphorus‐containing plasticizers exhibited excellent thermal stability and a weight‐loss of the system no more than 2.5% at 180°C; therefore, no unpleasant volatiles were released during processing. In contrast, the weight loss of the PLA/citrate system was as high as 10.8% at 180°C, forming heavy fog with an unpleasant smell during thermal mixing. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to observe the microstructure of the PLA/plasticizer systems, which indicated that the carboxylic butyl ester‐containing phosphine oxides was compatible with PLA matrix.
