To investigate why tailings piping break, identify the mechanisms of tailings dam breaches, and discover how mine tailings flood behave, a large-scale physical model of a tailings reservoir was constructed. The model tailings dam was breached and this breaching test was used to study dam breaching and the resulting tailings flood. The results show that a scour channel is formed in the dam by piping and then the upper portion of the dam collapses and lateral scour occurs. The breach goes through three stages: channel expansion, longitudinal undercutting, and transverse expansion. On the basis of these three stages, seven stages of dam breaching are proposed. The velocity of the tailings flood decreases logarithmically with distance. Three stages of dam breaking that include impact velocity, density, and burial depth are proposed based on a power function impact force model. Tailings flood undercut and erode near the dam and tailings are deposited farther away. The tailings flood direction changes at a bend and erosion occurs along the outer side of the bend while tailings are deposited near the inner side. Suggestions for tailings dam protection are put forward. The above research results provide an experimental and theoretical basis for disaster prevention and mitigation of tailings pond issues.

At present, due to the increasing pressures on society and the stress of everyday living, the number of individuals suffering from depression has increased. Therefore, the treatment of depression has also received increasing attention. MicroRNA (miRNA/miR)-135a is a well-studied miRNA. It has been reported that miR-135a is significantly downregulated in patients with depression and may be a potential marker for the diagnosis of the condition. However, the specific mechanisms of action of miR-135a in patients with depression remain unclear. In the present study, it was found that miR-135a was downregulated in patients with depression, and in a mouse model of depression. The effects of miR-135a on depression-related symptoms in mice were then explored. In the mice with chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) that were treated with miR-135a for 3 weeks, a significantly reduced level of weight gain was observed in comparison with the control group. In addition, treatment with miR-135a mimic significantly increased sucrose preference in the sucrose preference test in the mice, and reduced the immobility time in the forced swimming test and tail suspension test. Treatment with miR-135a mimic also inhibited CUMS-induced hippocampal cell apoptosis. Furthermore, treatment with miR-135a mimic and fluoxetine significantly reduced the CUMS-induced increase in the expression levels of inflammatory factors (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) in the hippocampus of the mice. Subsequently, reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis revealed that treatment with miR-135a mimic significantly inhibited the expression of Toll-like receptor 4 in the mouse hippocampus. In conclusion, the findings of the present study indicate that miR-135a may be a novel potential target for the treatment of depression.

The Longquanzhan deposit is one of the largest gold deposits in the Yi-Shu fault zone (central section of the Tan-Lu fault zone) in Shandong Province, China. It is an altered-rock type gold deposit in which ore bodies mainly occur at the contact zone between the overlying Cretaceous rocks and the underlying Neoarchean gneissic monzogranite. Shi et al. reported that this deposit formed at 96 ± 2 Ma using pyrite Rb–Sr dating method and represents a new gold mineralization event in the Shandong Province in 2014. In this paper, we present new He–Ar–S isotopic compositions to further decipher the sources of fluids responsible for the Longquanzhan gold mineralization. The results show that the δ34S values of pyrites vary between 0.9‰ and 4.4‰ with an average of 2.3‰. Inclusion-trapped fluids in ore sulfides have 3He/4He and 40Ar/36Ar ratios of 0.14–0.78 Ra and 482–1811, respectively. These isotopic data indicate that the ore fluids are derived from a magmatic source, which is dominated by crustal components with minor mantle contribution. Air-saturated water may be also involved in the hydrothermal system during the magmatic fluids ascending or at the shallow deposit site. We suggest that the crust-mantle mixing signature of the Longquanzhan gold deposit is genetically related to the Late Cretaceous lithospheric thinning along the Tan-Lu fault zone, which triggers constantly uplifting of the asthenosphere surface and persistent ascending of the isotherm plane to form the gold mineralization-related crustal level magma sources. This genetic model can be applied, to some extent, to explain the ore genesis of other deposits near or within the Tan-Lu fault belt.
