Motivated by Hadwiger's conjecture and related problems for list-coloring, we study graphs $H$ for which every graph with minimum degree at least $|V(H)|-1$ contains $H$ as a minor. We prove that a large class of apex-outerplanar graphs satisfies this property. Our result gives the first examples of such graphs whose vertex cover numbers are significantly larger than half of the number of its vertices, which breaks a barrier for attacking related coloring problems via extremal functions, and recovers all known such graphs that have arbitrarily large maximum degree. Our proof can be adapted to directed graphs to show that if $\vec H$ is the digraph obtained from a directed cycle or an in-arborescence by adding an apex source, then every digraph with minimum out-degree $|V(\vec H)|-1$ contains $\vec H$ as a subdivision or a butterfly minor respectively. These results provide the optimal upper bound for the chromatic number and dichromatic number of graphs and digraphs that do not contain the aforementioned graphs or digraphs as a minor, butterfly minor and a subdivision, respectively. Special cases of our results solve an open problem of Aboulker, Cohen, Havet, Lochet, Moura and Thomass\'{e} and strengthen results of Gishboliner, Steiner and Szab\'{o}.

We introduce peaceful colourings, a variant of $h$-conflict free colourings. We call a colouring with no monochromatic edges $p$-peaceful if for each vertex $v$, there are at most $p$ neighbours of $v$ coloured with a colour appearing on another neighbour of $v$. An $h$-conflict-free colouring of a graph is a (vertex)-colouring with no monochromatic edges so that for every vertex $v$, the number of neighbours of $v$ which are coloured with a colour appearing on no other neighbour of $v$ is at least the minimum of $h$ and the degree of $v$. If $G$ is $\Delta$-regular then it has an $h$-conflict free colouring precisely if it has a $(\Delta-h)$-peaceful colouring. We focus on the minimum $p_\Delta$ of those $p$ for which every graph of maximum degree $\Delta$ has a $p$-peaceful colouring with $\Delta+1$ colours. We show that $p_\Delta > (1-\frac{1}{e}-o(1))\Delta$ and that for graphs of bounded codegree, $p_\Delta \leq (1-\frac{1}{e}+o(1))\Delta$. We ask if the latter result can be improved by dropping the bound on the codegree. As a partial result, we show that $p_\Delta \leq \frac{8000}{8001}\Delta$ for sufficiently large $\Delta$.

A proper conflict-free colouring of a graph is a colouring of the vertices such that any two adjacent vertices receive different colours, and for every non-isolated vertex $v$, some colour appears exactly once on the neighbourhood of $v$. Caro, Petru\v{s}evski and \v{S}krekovski conjectured that every connected graph with maximum degree $\Delta \geq 3$ has a proper conflict-free colouring with at most $\Delta+1$ colours. This conjecture holds for $\Delta=3$ and remains open for $\Delta \geq 4$. In this paper we prove that this conjecture holds asymptotically; namely, every graph with maximum degree $\Delta$ has a proper conflict-free colouring with $(1+o(1))\Delta$ colours.

Weak diameter coloring of graphs recently attracted attention partially due to its connection to asymptotic dimension of metric spaces. We consider weak diameter list-coloring of graphs in this paper. Dvo\v{r}\'{a}k and Norin proved that graphs with bounded Euler genus are 3-choosable with bounded weak diameter. In this paper, we extend their result by showing that for every graph $H$, $H$-minor free graphs are 3-choosable with bounded weak diameter. The upper bound 3 is optimal and it strengthens an earlier result for non-list-coloring $H$-minor free graphs with bounded weak diameter. As a corollary, $H$-minor free graphs with bounded maximum degree are 3-choosable with bounded clustering, strengthening an earlier result for non-list-coloring. When $H$ is planar, we prove a much stronger result: for every 2-list-assignment $L$ of an $H$-minor free graph, every precoloring with bounded weak diameter can be extended to an $L$-coloring with bounded weak diameter. As a corollary, for any planar graph $H$ and $H$-minor free graph $G$, there are exponentially many list-colorings of $G$ with bounded weak diameter (and with bounded clustering if $G$ also has bounded maximum degree); and every graph with bounded layered tree-width and bounded maximum degree has exponentially many 3-colorings with bounded clustering. We also show that the aforementioned results for list-coloring cannot be extended to odd minor free graphs by showing that some bipartite graphs with maximum degree $\Delta$ are $k$-choosable with bounded weak diameter only when $k=\Omega(\log\Delta/\log\log\Delta)$. On the other hand, we show that odd $H$-minor graphs are 3-colorable with bounded weak diameter, implying an earlier result about clustered coloring of odd $H$-minor free graphs with bounded maximum degree.

Assouad-Nagata dimension addresses both large and small scale behaviors of metric spaces and is a refinement of Gromov's asymptotic dimension. A metric space $M$ is a minor-closed metric if there exists an (edge-)weighted graph $G$ satisfying a fixed minor-closed property such that the underlying space of $M$ is the vertex-set of $G$, and the metric of $M$ is the distance function in $G$. Minor-closed metrics naturally arise when removing redundant edges of the underlying graphs by using edge-deletion and edge-contraction. In this paper, we determine the Assouad-Nagata dimension of every minor-closed metric. Our main theorem simultaneously generalizes known results about the asymptotic dimension of $H$-minor free unweighted graphs and about the Assouad-Nagata dimension of complete Riemannian surfaces with finite Euler genus.

Terahertz (THz) communication with ultra-wide available spectrum is a promising technique that can achieve the stringent requirement of high data rate in the next-generation wireless networks, yet its severe propagation attenuation significantly hinders its implementation in practice. Finding beam directions for a large-scale antenna array to effectively overcome severe propagation attenuation of THz signals is a pressing need. This paper proposes a novel approach of federated deep reinforcement learning (FDRL) to swiftly perform THz-beam search for multiple base stations (BSs) coordinated by an edge server in a cellular network. All the BSs conduct deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG)-based DRL to obtain THz beamforming policy with limited channel state information (CSI). They update their DDPG models with hidden information in order to mitigate inter-cell interference. We demonstrate that the cell network can achieve higher throughput as more THz CSI and hidden neurons of DDPG are adopted. We also show that FDRL with partial model update is able to nearly achieve the same performance of FDRL with full model update, which indicates an effective means to reduce communication load between the edge server and the BSs by partial model uploading. Moreover, the proposed FDRL outperforms conventional non-learning-based and existing non-FDRL benchmark optimization methods.

A proper coloring of a graph is \emph{conflict-free} if, for every non-isolated vertex, some color is used exactly once on its neighborhood. Caro, Petru\v{s}evski, and \v{S}krekovski proved that every graph $G$ has a proper conflict-free coloring with at most $5\Delta(G)/2$ colors and conjectured that $\Delta(G)+1$ colors suffice for every connected graph $G$ with $\Delta(G)\ge 3$. Our first main result is that even for list-coloring, $\left\lceil 1.6550826\Delta(G)+\sqrt{\Delta(G)}\right\rceil$ colors suffice for every graph $G$ with $\Delta(G)\ge 10^{8}$; we also prove slightly weaker bounds for all graphs with $\Delta(G)\ge 750$. These results follow from our more general framework on proper conflict-free list-coloring of a pair consisting of a graph $G$ and a "conflict" hypergraph ${\mathcal H}$. As another corollary of our results in this general framework, every graph has a proper $(\sqrt{30}+o(1))\Delta(G)^{1.5}$-list-coloring such that every bi-chromatic component is a path on at most three vertices, where the number of colors is optimal up to a constant factor. Our proof uses a fairly new type of recursive counting argument called Rosenfeld counting, which is a variant of the Lov\'{a}sz Local Lemma or entropy compression. We also prove an asymptotically optimal result for a fractional analogue of our general framework for proper conflict-free coloring for pairs of a graph and a conflict hypergraph. A corollary states that every graph $G$ has a fractional $(1+o(1))\Delta(G)$-coloring such that every fractionally bi-chromatic component has at most two vertices. In particular, it implies that the fractional analogue of the conjecture of Caro et al.\ holds asymptotically in a strong sense.

The clustering of a graph coloring is the maximum size of monochromatic components. This paper studies colorings with bounded clustering in graph classes with bounded layered treewidth, which include planar graphs, graphs of bounded Euler genus, graphs embeddable on a fixed surface with a bounded number of crossings per edge, map graphs, amongst other examples. Our main theorem says that every graph with layered treewidth at most $k$ and with maximum degree at most $\Delta$ is $3$-colorable with clustering $O(k^{19}\Delta^{37})$. This is the first known polynomial bound on the clustering. The defective chromatic number of a graph class is the infimum $k$ such that there exists an integer $d$ such that every graph in this class can be partitioned into at most $k$ induced subgraphs with maximum degree at most $d$. Finding the defective chromatic number is a fundamental graph partitioning problem and received attention recently partially due to Hadwiger's conjecture about coloring minor-closed families. In this paper, we prove that the defective chromatic number of any minor-closed family equals the simple lower bound obtained by the standard construction, confirming a conjecture of Ossona de Mendez, Oum, and Wood. This result provides the optimal list of unavoidable finite minors for infinite graphs that cannot be partitioned into a fixed finite number of induced subgraphs with uniformly bounded maximum degree. As corollaries about clustered coloring, we obtain a linear relation between the clustered chromatic number of any minor-closed family and the tree-depth of its forbidden minors, improving an earlier exponential bound proved by Norin, Scott, Seymour, and Wood and confirming the planar case of their conjecture.

Sparse subspace clustering (SSC) using greedy-based neighbor selection, such as orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP), has been known as a popular computationally-efficient alternative to the popular L1-minimization based methods. This paper proposes a new SSC scheme using generalized OMP (GOMP), a soup-up of OMP whereby multiple neighbors are identified per iteration, along with a new stopping rule requiring nothing more than a knowledge of the ambient signal dimension. Compared to conventional OMP, which identifies one neighbor per iteration, the proposed GOMP method involves fewer iterations, thereby enjoying lower algorithmic complexity; advantageously, the proposed stopping rule is free from off-line estimation of subspace dimension and noise power. Under the semi-random model, analytic performance guarantees, in terms of neighbor recovery rates, are established to justify the advantage of the proposed GOMP. The results show that, with a high probability, GOMP (i) is halted by the proposed stopping rule, and (ii) can retrieve more true neighbors than OMP, consequently yielding higher final data clustering accuracy. Computer simulations using both synthetic data and real human face data are provided to validate our analytic study and evidence the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Proper conflict-free coloring is an intermediate notion between proper coloring of a graph and proper coloring of its square. It is a proper coloring such that for every non-isolated vertex, there exists a color appearing exactly once in its (open) neighborhood. Typical examples of graphs with large proper conflict-free chromatic number include graphs with large chromatic number and bipartite graphs isomorphic to the $1$-subdivision of graphs with large chromatic number. In this paper, we prove two rough converse statements that hold even in the list-coloring setting. The first is for sparse graphs: for every graph $H$, there exists an integer $c_H$ such that every graph with no subdivision of $H$ is (properly) conflict-free $c_H$-choosable. The second applies to dense graphs: every graph with large conflict-free choice number either contains a large complete graph as an odd minor or contains a bipartite induced subgraph that has large conflict-free choice number. These give two incomparable (partial) answers of a question of Caro, Petru\v{s}evski and \v{S}krekovski. We also prove quantitatively better bounds for minor-closed families, implying some known results about proper conflict-free coloring and odd coloring in the literature. Moreover, we prove that every graph with layered treewidth at most $w$ is (properly) conflict-free $(8w-1)$-choosable. This paper presents a novel approach to conduct highly efficient federated learning (FL) over a massive wireless edge network, where an edge server and numerous mobile devices (clients) jointly learn a global model without transporting the huge amount of data collected by the mobile devices to the edge server. The proposed FL approach is referred to as spatio-temporal FL (STFL), which jointly exploits the spatial and temporal correlations between the learning updates from different mobile devices scheduled to join STFL in various training epochs. The STFL model not only represents the realistic intermittent learning behavior from the edge server to the mobile devices due to data delivery outage, but also features a mechanism of compensating loss learning updates in order to mitigate the impacts of intermittent learning. An analytical framework of STFL is proposed and employed to study the learning capability of STFL via its convergence performance. In particular, we have assessed the impact of data delivery outage, intermittent learning mitigation, and statistical heterogeneity of datasets on the convergence performance of STFL. Federated learning (FL) is a promising distributed learning technique particularly suitable for wireless learning scenarios since it can accomplish a learning task without raw data transportation so as to preserve data privacy and lower network resource consumption. However, current works on FL over wireless networks do not profoundly study the fundamental performance of FL over wireless networks that suffers from communication outage due to channel impairment and network interference. To accurately exploit the performance of FL over wireless networks, this paper proposes a novel intermittent FL model over a cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network, which characterizes communication outage from UAV (clients) to their server and data heterogeneity among the datasets at UAVs. We propose an analytically tractable framework to derive the uplink outage probability and use it to devise a simulation-based approach so as to evaluate the performance of the proposed intermittent FL model. Our findings reveal how the intermittent FL model is impacted by uplink communication outage and UAV deployment. This paper studies how to achieve a high and flexible coverage performance of a large-scale cellular network that enables unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) transmission to simultaneously serve multiple users. The considered cellular network consists of a tier of base stations and a tier of UAVs. Each UAV is mounted with an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in order to serve as an aerial IRS reflecting signals between a base station and a user in the network. All the UAVs in the network are deployed based on a newly proposed three-dimensional (3D) point process that leads to a tractable and accurate analysis of the association statistics, which is traditionally difficult to analyze due to the mobility of UAVs. In light of this, we are able to analyze the downlink coverage of UAV-IRS-assisted NOMA transmission for two users and derive the corresponding coverage probabilities. Our coverage analyses shed light on the optimal allocations of transmit power between NOMA users and UAVs to accomplish the goal of ubiquitous and flexible NOMA transmission. For a fixed graph $H$ and for arbitrarily large host graphs $G$, the number of homomorphisms from $H$ to $G$ and the number of subgraphs isomorphic to $H$ contained in $G$ have been extensively studied in extremal graph theory and graph limits theory when the host graphs are allowed to be dense. This paper addresses the case when the host graphs are robustly sparse and proves a general theorem that solves a number of open questions proposed since 1990s and strengthens a number of results in the literature. We prove that for any graph $H$ and any set ${\mathcal H}$ of homomorphisms from $H$ to members of a hereditary class ${\mathcal G}$ of graphs, if ${\mathcal H}$ satisfies a natural and mild condition, and contracting disjoint subgraphs of radius $O(\lvert V(H) \rvert)$ in members of ${\mathcal G}$ cannot create a graph with large edge-density, then an obvious lower bound for the size of ${\mathcal H}$ gives a good estimation for the size of ${\mathcal H}$. This result determines the maximum number of $H$-homomorphisms, the maximum number of $H$-subgraphs, and the maximum number $H$-induced subgraphs in graphs in any hereditary class with bounded expansion up to a constant factor; it also determines the exact value of the asymptotic logarithmic density for $H$-homomorphisms, $H$-subgraphs and $H$-induced subgraphs in graphs in any hereditary nowhere dense class. Hereditary classes with bounded expansion include (topological) minor-closed families and many classes of graphs with certain geometric properties; nowhere dense classes are the most general sparse classes in sparsity theory. Our machinery also allows us to determine the maximum number of $H$-subgraphs in the class of all $d$-degenerate graphs with any fixed $d$.

This paper aims to propose a three-dimensional (3D) point process that can be employed to generally deploy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in a large-scale cellular network and tractably analyze the fundamental network-wide performances of the network. This 3D point process is devised based on a 2D marked Poisson point process in which each point and its random mark uniquely correspond to the projection and the altitude of each point in the 3D point process, respectively. We elaborate on some important statistical properties of the proposed 3D point process and use them to tractably analyze the coverage performances of a UAV-enabled cellular network wherein all the UAVs equipped with multiple antennas are served as aerial base stations. The downlink coverage of the UAV-enabled cellular network is found and its closed-form results for some special cases are explicitly derived as well. Furthermore, the fundamental limits achieved by cell-free massive antenna array are characterized when coordinating all the UAVs to jointly perform non-coherent downlink transmission. The asymptotic dimension is an invariant of metric spaces introduced by Gromov in the context of geometric group theory. In this paper, we study the asymptotic dimension of metric spaces generated by graphs and their shortest path metric and show their applications to some continuous spaces. The asymptotic dimension of such graph metrics can be seen as a large scale generalisation of weak diameter network decomposition which has been extensively studied in computer science. We prove that every proper minor-closed family of graphs has asymptotic dimension at most 2, which gives optimal answers to a question of Fujiwara and Papasoglu and (in a strong form) to a problem raised by Ostrovskii and Rosenthal on minor excluded groups. For some special minor-closed families, such as the class of graphs embeddable in a surface of bounded Euler genus, we prove a stronger result and apply this to show that complete Riemannian surfaces have Assouad-Nagata dimension at most 2. In a heterogeneous cellular network (HetNet) consisting of $M$ tiers of densely-deployed base stations (BSs), consider that each of the BSs in the HetNet that are associated with multiple users is able to simultaneously schedule and serve two users in a downlink time slot by performing the (power-domain) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme. This paper aims at the preliminary study on the downlink coverage performance of the HetNet with the \textit{non-cooperative} and the proposed \textit{cooperative} NOMA schemes. First, we study the coverage probability of the NOMA users for the non-cooperative NOMA scheme in which no BSs are coordinated to jointly transmit the NOMA signals for a particular cell and the coverage probabilities of the two NOMA users of the BSs in each tier are derived. We show that the coverage probabilities can be largely reduced if allocated transmit powers for the NOMA users are not satisfied with some constraints. Next, we study and derive the coverage probabilities for the proposed cooperative NOMA scheme in which the void BSs that are not tagged by any users are coordinated to enhance the far NOMA user in a particular cell. Nash-Williams' Strong Immersion Conjecture states that graphs are well-quasi-ordered by the strong immersion relation. That is, given infinitely many graphs, one graph contains another graph as a strong immersion. In this paper we study the analogous problem for directed graphs. It is known that digraphs are not well-quasi-ordered by the strong immersion relation, but for all known such infinite antichains, paths that change direction arbitrarily many times can be found. This paper proves that the converse statement is true: for every positive integer $k$, the digraphs that do not contain a path that changes direction $k$ times are well-quasi-ordered by the strong immersion relation, even when vertices are labelled by a well-quasi-order. This result is optimal for classes of digraphs closed under taking subgraphs since paths that change direction arbitrarily many times with vertex-labels form an infinite antichain with respect to the strong immersion relation.

This paper aims to propose a three-dimensional (3D) point process model that can be employed to generally deploy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in a large-scale cellular network and tractably analyze the fundamental network-wide performances of the network. The asymptotic dimension of metric spaces is an important notion in geometric group theory introduced by Gromov. The metric spaces considered in this paper are the ones whose underlying spaces are the vertex-sets of graphs and whose metrics are the distance functions in graphs. A standard compactness argument shows that it suffices to consider the asymptotic dimension of classes of finite graphs. In this paper we prove that the asymptotic dimension of any proper minor-closed family, any class of graphs of bounded tree-width, and any class of graphs of bounded layered tree-width are at most 2, 1, and 2, respectively. The first result solves a question of Fujiwara and Papasoglu; the second and third results solve a number of questions of Bonamy, Bousquet, Esperet, Groenland, Pirot and Scott. These bounds for asymptotic dimension are optimal and improve a number of results in the literature. Our proofs can be transformed into linear or quadratic time algorithms for finding coverings witnessing the asymptotic dimension which is equivalent to finding weak diameter colorings for graphs. The key ingredient of our proof is a unified machinery about the asymptotic dimension of classes of graphs that have tree-decompositions of bounded adhesion over hereditary classes with known asymptotic dimension, which might be of independent interest.

Hadwiger and Haj\'{o}s conjectured that for every positive integer $t$, $K_{t+1}$-minor free graphs and $K_{t+1}$-topological minor free graphs are properly $t$-colorable, respectively. Clustered coloring version of these two conjectures which only require monochromatic components to have bounded size has been extensively studied. In this paper we consider the clustered coloring version of the immersion-variant of Hadwiger's and Haj\'{o}s' conjecture proposed by Lescure and Meyniel and independently by Abu-Khzam and Langston. We determine the minimum number of required colors for $H$-immersion free graphs, for any fixed graph $H$, up to a small additive absolute constant. Our result is tight for infinitely many graphs $H$. A key machinery developed in this paper is a lemma that reduces a clustering coloring problem on graphs to the one on the torsos of their tree-cut decomposition or tree-decomposition. A byproduct of this machinery is a unified proof of a result of Alon, Ding, Oporowski and Vertigan and a result of the author and Oum about clustered coloring graphs of bounded maximum degree in minor-closed families.

A graph $G$ contains another graph $H$ as an immersion if $H$ can be obtained from a subgraph of $G$ by splitting off edges and removing isolated vertices. There is an obvious necessary degree condition for the immersion containment: if $G$ contains $H$ as an immersion, then for every integer $k$, the number of vertices of degree at least $k$ in $G$ is at least the number of vertices of degree at least $k$ in $H$. In this paper, we prove that this obvious necessary condition is "nearly" sufficient for graphs with no edge-cut of order 3: for every graph $H$, every $H$-immersion free graph with no edge-cut of order 3 can be obtained by an edge-sum of graphs, where each of the summands is obtained from a graph violating the obvious degree condition by adding a bounded number of edges. The condition for having no edge-cut of order 3 is necessary. A simple application of this theorem shows that for every graph $H$ of maximum degree $d \geq 4$, there exists an integer $c$ such that for every positive integer $m$, there are at most $c^m$ unlabelled $d$-edge-connected $H$-immersion free $m$-edge graphs with no isolated vertex, while there are superexponentially many unlabelled $(d-1)$-edge-connected $H$-immersion free $m$-edge graphs with no isolated vertex. Our structure theorem will be applied in a forthcoming paper about determining the clustered chromatic number of the class of $H$-immersion free graphs.

Robertson and Seymour's celebrated Graph Minor Theorem states that graphs are well-quasi-ordered by the minor relation. Unlike the minor relation, the topological minor relation does not well-quasi-order graphs in general. Among all known infinite antichains with respect to the topological containment, subdivisions of a graph obtained from an arbitrarily long path by duplicating each edge can be found. In the 1980's Robertson conjectured that this is the only obstruction. Formally, he conjectured that for every positive integer $k$, graphs that do not contain the graph obtained from a path of length $k$ by duplicating each edge as a topological minor are well-quasi-ordered by the topological minor relation. The case $k=1$ implies Kruskal's Tree Theorem, and the case $k=2$ implies a conjecture of V\'{a}zsonyi on subcubic graphs. This series of papers dedicates a proof of Robertson's conjecture. We prove Robertson's conjecture for graphs of bounded tree-width in this paper. It is an essential step toward the complete proof of Robertson's conjecture, and the machinery developed in this paper will be applied in future papers of the series. This bounded tree-width case proved in this paper implies all known results about well-quasi-ordering graphs by the topological minor relation that can be proved without using the Graph Minor Theorem, and our proof in this paper is self-contained.

Sparse subspace clustering (SSC) using greedy-based neighbor selection, such as matching pursuit (MP) and orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP), has been known as a popular computationally-efficient alternative to the conventional L1-minimization based methods. Under deterministic bounded noise corruption, in this paper we derive coherence-based sufficient conditions guaranteeing correct neighbor identification using MP/OMP. Our analyses exploit the maximum/minimum inner product between two noisy data points subject to a known upper bound on the noise level. The obtained sufficient condition clearly reveals the impact of noise on greedy-based neighbor recovery. Specifically, it asserts that, as long as noise is sufficiently small so that the resultant perturbed residual vectors stay close to the desired subspace, both MP and OMP succeed in returning a correct neighbor subset. A striking finding is that, when the ground truth subspaces are well-separated from each other and noise is not large, MP-based iterations, while enjoying lower algorithmic complexity, yield smaller perturbation of residuals, thereby better able to identify correct neighbors and, in turn, achieving higher global data clustering accuracy. Extensive numerical experiments are used to corroborate our theoretical study.

It was recently proved that every planar graph is a subgraph of the strong product of a path and a graph with bounded treewidth. This paper surveys generalisations of this result for graphs on surfaces, minor-closed classes, various non-minor-closed classes, and graph classes with polynomial growth. We then explore how graph product structure might be applicable to more broadly defined graph classes. In particular, we characterise when a graph class defined by a cartesian or strong product has bounded or polynomial expansion. Given an infinite family ${\mathcal G}$ of graphs and a monotone property ${\mathcal P}$, an (upper) threshold for ${\mathcal G}$ and ${\mathcal P}$ is a "fastest growing" function $p: \mathbb{N} \to [0,1]$ such that $\lim_{n \to \infty} \Pr(G_n(p(n)) \in {\mathcal P})= 1$ for any sequence $(G_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ over ${\mathcal G}$ with $\lim_{n \to \infty}\lvert V(G_n) \rvert = \infty$, where $G_n(p(n))$ is the random subgraph of $G_n$ such that each edge remains independently with probability $p(n)$. In this paper we study the upper threshold for the family of $H$-minor free graphs and for the graph property of being $(r-1)$-degenerate, which is one fundamental graph property with many applications. Even a constant factor approximation for the upper threshold for all pairs $(r,H)$ is expected to be very difficult by its close connection to a major open question in extremal graph theory. We determine asymptotically the thresholds (up to a constant factor) for being $(r-1)$-degenerate for a large class of pairs $(r,H)$, including all graphs $H$ of minimum degree at least $r$ and all graphs $H$ with no vertex-cover of size at most $r$, and provide lower bounds for the rest of the pairs of $(r,H)$. The results generalize to arbitrary proper minor-closed families and the properties of being $r$-colorable, being $r$-choosable, or containing an $r$-regular subgraph, respectively.

Haj\'os conjectured that every graph containing no subdivision of the complete graph $K_{s+1}$ is properly $s$-colorable. This conjecture was disproved by Catlin. Indeed, the maximum chromatic number of such graphs is $\Omega(s^2/\log s)$. We prove that $O(s)$ colors are enough for a weakening of this conjecture that only requires every monochromatic component to have bounded size (so-called clustered coloring). Our approach leads to more results. Say that a graph is an almost $(\leq 1)$-subdivision of a graph $H$ if it can be obtained from $H$ by subdividing edges, where at most one edge is subdivided more than once. Note that every graph with no $H$-subdivision does not contain an almost $(\leq 1)$-subdivision of $H$. We prove the following (where $s \geq 2$): (1) Graphs of bounded treewidth and with no almost $(\leq 1)$-subdivision of $K_{s+1}$ are $s$-choosable with bounded clustering. (2) For every graph $H$, graphs with no $H$-minor and no almost $(\leq 1)$-subdivision of $K_{s+1}$ are $(s+1)$-colorable with bounded clustering. (3) For every graph $H$ of maximum degree at most $d$, graphs with no $H$-subdivision and no almost $(\leq 1)$-subdivision of $K_{s+1}$ are $\max\{s+3d-5,2\}$-colorable with bounded clustering. (4) For every graph $H$ of maximum degree $d$, graphs with no $K_{s,t}$ subgraph and no $H$-subdivision are $\max\{s+3d-4,2\}$-colorable with bounded clustering. (5) Graphs with no $K_{s+1}$-subdivision are $(4s-5)$-colorable with bounded clustering. Sparse subspace clustering (SSC) relies on sparse regression for accurate neighbor identification. Inspired by recent progress in compressive sensing, this paper proposes a new sparse regression scheme for SSC via two-step reweighted $\ell_1$-minimization, which also generalizes a two-step $\ell_1$-minimization algorithm introduced by E. J. Cand\`es et al in [The Annals of Statistics, vol. 42, no. 2, pp. 669-699, 2014] without incurring extra algorithmic complexity. To fully exploit the prior information offered by the computed sparse representation vector in the first step, our approach places a weight on each component of the regression vector, and solves a weighted LASSO in the second step. We propose a data weighting rule suitable for enhancing neighbor identification accuracy. Then, under the formulation of the dual problem of weighted LASSO, we study in depth the theoretical neighbor recovery rates of the proposed scheme. Specifically, an interesting connection between the locations of nonzeros of the optimal sparse solution to the weighted LASSO and the indexes of the active constraints of the dual problem is established. Afterwards, under the semi-random model, analytic probability lower/upper bounds for various neighbor recovery events are derived. Our analytic results confirm that, with the aid of data weighting and if the prior neighbor information is enough accurate, the proposed scheme with a higher probability can produce many correct neighbors and few incorrect neighbors as compared to the solution without data weighting. Computer simulations are provided to validate our analytic study and evidence the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Consider a large-scale cellular network in which base stations (BSs) serve massive Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. Since IoT devices are powered by a capacity-limited battery, how to prolong their working lifetime is a paramount problem for the success of cellular IoT systems. This paper proposes how to use BSs to manage the active and dormant operating modes of the IoT devices via downlink signaling in an energy-efficient fashion and how the IoT devices perform energy-efficient uplink power control to improve their uplink coverage. We first investigate the fundamental statistical properties of an activation signaling process induced by BSs that would like to activate the devices in their cells, which helps to derive the neat expressions of the true, false and total activation probabilities that reveal joint downlink power control and BS coordination is an effective means to significantly improve the activation performance. We then propose an energy-efficient uplink power control for IoT devices which is shown to save power and ameliorate the uplink coverage probability at the same time. We also propose an energy-efficient downlink power control and BS coordination scheme, which is shown to remarkably improve the activation and uplink coverage performances at the same time., Comment: 15pages, 7 figures

A graph coloring has bounded clustering if each monochromatic component has bounded size. Equivalently, it is a partition of the vertices into induced subgraphs with bounded size components. This paper studies clustered colorings of graphs, where the number of colors depends on an excluded minor and/or an excluded subgraph. We prove the following results (for fixed integers $s,t$ and a fixed graph $H$). First we show that graphs with no $K_{s,t}$ subgraph and with no $H$-minor are $(s+2)$-colorable with bounded clustering. The number of colors here is best possible. This result implies that graphs with no $K_{s+1}$-minor are $(s+2)$-colorable with bounded clustering, which is within two colors of the clustered coloring version of Hadwiger's conjecture. For graphs of bounded treewidth (or equivalently, excluding a planar minor) and with no $K_{s,t}$ subgraph, we prove $(s+1)$-choosability with bounded clustering, which is best possible. We then consider excluding an odd minor. We prove that graphs with no $K_{s,t}$ subgraph and with no odd $H$-minor are $(2s+1)$-colorable with bounded clustering, generalizing a result of the first author and Oum who proved the case $s=1$. Moreover, at least $s-1$ color classes are stable sets. Finally, we consider the clustered coloring version of a conjecture of Gerards and Seymour and prove that graphs with no odd $K_{s+1}$-minor are $(8s-4)$-colorable with bounded clustering, which improves on previous such bounds.

A graph coloring has bounded clustering if each monochromatic component has bounded size. This paper studies such a coloring, where the number of colors depends on an excluded complete bipartite subgraph. This is a much weaker assumption than previous works, where typically the number of colors depends on an excluded minor. This paper focuses on graph classes with bounded layered treewidth, which include planar graphs, graphs of bounded Euler genus, graphs embeddable on a fixed surface with a bounded number of crossings per edge, amongst other examples. Our main theorem says that for fixed integers $s,t,k$, every graph with layered treewidth at most $k$ and with no $K_{s,t}$ subgraph is $(s+2)$-colorable with bounded clustering. The $s=3$ case implies that every graph with a drawing on a fixed surface with a bounded number of crossings per edge is 5-colorable with bounded clustering. This paper aims to exploit the fundamental limits on the downlink coverage and spatial throughput performances of a cellular network comprised of a tier of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) base stations (BSs) using the millimeter wave (mmWave) band and a tier of ground BSs using the ultra high frequency (UHF) band. To reduce handover signaling overhead, the ground BSs take charge of control signaling delivery whereas the UAVs are in charge of payload data transmission so that users need to be simultaneously associated with a ground BS and a UAV in this network with a control-data plane-split architecture. We first propose a three-dimensional (3D) location distribution model of the UAVs using stochastic geometry which is able to generally characterize the positions of the UAVs in the sky. Using this 3D distribution model of UAVs, two performance metrics, i.e., multi-cell coverage probability and volume spectral efficiency, are proposed. Their explicit low-complexity expressions are derived and their upper limits are found when each of the UAVs and ground BSs is equipped with a massive antenna array. We further show that the multi-cell coverage probability and the volume spectral efficiency can be maximized by optimally deploying and positioning the UAVs in the sky and thereby their fundamental maximal limits are found. In this paper, we prove a tight minimum degree condition in general graphs for the existence of paths between two given endpoints, whose lengths form a long arithmetic progression with common difference one or two. This allows us to obtain a number of exact and optimal results on cycle lengths in graphs of given minimum degree, connectivity or chromatic number. More precisely, we prove the following statements by a unified approach. (1) Every graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains cycles of all even lengths modulo $k$; in addition, if $G$ is 2-connected and non-bipartite, then it contains cycles of all lengths modulo $k$. (2) For all $k\geq 3$, every $k$-connected graph contains a cycle of length zero modulo $k$. (3) Every 3-connected non-bipartite graph with minimum degree at least $k+1$ contains $k$ cycles of consecutive lengths. (4) Every graph with chromatic number at least $k+2$ contains $k$ cycles of consecutive lengths. The first statement is a conjecture of Thomassen, the second is a conjecture of Dean, the third is a tight answer to a question of Bondy and Vince, and the fourth is a conjecture of Sudakov and Verstra\"ete. All of the above results are best possible.

Attaining reliable communications traditionally relies on a closed-loop methodology but inevitably incurs a good amount of networking latency thanks to complicated feedback mechanism and signaling storm. Such a closed-loop methodology thus shackles the current cellular network with a tradeoff between high reliability and low latency. To completely avoid the latency induced by closed-loop communication, this paper aims to study how to jointly employ open-loop communication and multi-cell association in a heterogeneous network (HetNet) so as to achieve ultra-reliable and low-latency communications. We first introduce how mobile users in a HetNet adopt the proposed proactive multi-cell association (PMCA) scheme to form their virtual cell that consists of multiple access points (APs) and then analyze the communication reliability and latency performances. We show that the communication reliability can be significantly improved by the PMCA scheme and maximized by optimizing the densities of the users and the APs. The analyses of the uplink and downlink delays are also accomplished, which show that extremely low latency can be fulfilled in the virtual cell of a single user if the PMCA scheme is adopted and the radio resources of each AP are appropriately allocated., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, journal publication

In a heterogeneous cellular network (HetNet) consisting of multiple different types (tiers) of base stations (BSs), the void cell event in which a BS does not have any users has been shown to exist due to user-centric BS association and its probability is dominated by the cell load of each tier. Such a void cell phenomenon has not been well characterized in the modeling and analytical framework of simultaneous wireless information and power transmission (SWIPT) in a HetNet. This paper aims to accurately exploit the fundamental performance limits of the SWIPT between a BS and its user by modeling the cell-load impact on the downlink and uplink transmissions of each BS. We first characterize the power-splitting receiver architecture at a user and analyze the statistical properties and limits of its harvested power and energy, which reveals how much of the average energy can be harvested by users and how likely the self-powered sustainability of users can be achieved. We then derive the downlink and uplink rates that characterize the cell-load and user association effects and use them to define the energy efficiency of a user.
