22. A Comparison of Atmospheric Boundary Layer Height Determination Methods Using GNSS Radio Occultation Data.

Abstract

The accurate determination of Atmospheric Boundary Layer Height (ABLH) is crucial in various atmospheric studies and practical applications. In this study, we present a comprehensive comparative analysis of five distinct methods for estimating ABLH using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Radio Occultation (RO) data. These methods encompass the use of bending angle and refractivity profiles, namely Minimum Gradient methods of the Bending Angle (MGBA) and Refractivity (MGR) profiles, breaking point, Wavelet Covariance Transform (WCT), and Double-Parameter Model Function (DPMF). GNSS-RO data from COSMIC-2 and Spire are used. To establish robust validation, radiosonde data are employed as a reference, ensuring the reliability of our findings. The results reveal notable variations in the performances of these ABLH estimation methods. Specifically, the MGBA, MGR, breaking point, and DPMF methods exhibit strong correlations with the reference data. Conversely, the WCT method displays weaker correlations, higher biases, and elevated root-mean-square-errors, suggesting limitations in capturing the true ABLH. Furthermore, we remove outlier screening to facilitate a comparison of the differences among the five methods. The WCT and DPMF methods can detect strong variations in the profiles near the Earth's surface and consider them as ABLH. However, these variations are caused by errors. The MGBA method emerges as a reliable and stable option, while the WCT and DPMF methods should be used with caution due to the lower quality of the GNSS-RO profiles near the Earth's surface. Abstract

In modern cities, urban public spaces, such as parks, gardens, plazas, and streets, play a big role in people's social activities, physical activities, mental health, and overall well-being. However, the traditional post-occupancy evaluation (POE) process for public spaces such as large urban parks is extremely difficult, especially for long-term user experiences through observations, surveys, and interviews. On the other hand, social media has emerged as a major media outlet recording millions of user experiences to the public, which provides opportunities to inform how public space is used and perceived by users. Furthermore, unlike previous research that primarily presented descriptive characters of park programs, our study employs a network model to elucidate the interactive relationships and intensities among reported park elements, human activities, and experiences. This approach enables us to track the sources within the space that impact people's perceptions, such as weather conditions, food options, and notable landmarks. The utilization of this network model opens avenues for future research to comprehensively investigate the factors shaping people's perceptions in public open spaces. This study uses Bryant Park as an example and presents a new analytical framework, POSE (post-occupancy social media evaluation), to support long-term POE studies for large public spaces. Methods such as data automation, descriptive statistics, and social network analysis were used. The identification and quantification of meaningful park activities, scenes, and sentiments as well as their relationships will help optimize the design and management of park programs. Abstract

Squamous cancer (SqCC) of the lung has a poor prognosis. With the advent of immunotherapy, prognosis has tended to improve; however, pseudoprogression poses a challenge to the management of immunotherapy. Herein, we discuss the case of a 47‐year‐old heavy smoker with advanced SqCC. The patient had recurrent disease after initial successful control of the tumor by concurrent radiochemotherapy, together with ample pleural effusion. Pleural effusion was well controlled with systematic nivolumab and intra‐thoracic recombinant endostatin; however with simultaneous deterioration of performance and tumor progression. Nivolumab was maintained with the addition of nab‐paclitaxel. The combination soon led to a partial response and rapid improvement of the patient's performance. During treatment of this case, we advocated the early control of pleural effusion as an indicator for pseudoprogression. Our experience might be helpful to identify pseudoprogression for the clinical management of immunotherapy.
