8. Optimization Algorithm-Based Approach for Modelling Large Deflection of Cantilever Beam Subjected to Tip Load

Abstract

Beam mechanism and beam theory have attracted substantial attention from researchers, as they have been widely used in many fields such as compliant mechanisms and soft robots. The modeling of beam mechanisms becomes complicated due to the geometric nonlinearity that is proved to be significant with large deflection. A new method, called optimization algorithm-based approach (OABA), is proposed to predict the large deflection of cantilever beams, in which an optimization algorithm is exploited to find the locus of the beam tip. With the derived locus of the beam tip, the deflection curve of the cantilever beam can be calculated. The optimization algorithm in this paper is embodied in a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed method can precisely predict the deflection of the uniform and non-uniform cantilever beams. The maximum error is limited to 4.35% when the normalized maximum transverse deflection reaches 0.75. Given that, the proposed OABA would be a universal approach to model the large deflection of cantilever beams subjected to tip loads.

Abstract

Electroactive liquid crystal elastomers (eLCEs) are used to make actuators and soft robotics. However, most eLCEs are monofunctional with one type of deformation (bending or contraction). Recently, a trilayer eLCE are reported by combining ion‐conducting LCE and ionic electroactive polymer device (i‐EAD). This i‐EAD‐LCE is bifunctional and performs either bending or contractile deformation by controlling low‐voltage stimulation. Nevertheless, it has a Young's modulus of only 1.63 MPa. To improve the mechanical performance, the i‐EAD‐IPN‐LCE is prepared here, whose central membrane is composed of interpenetrating LCE and ionogel (i‐IPN‐LCE) instead of a single ion‐conducting LCE. This i‐EAD‐IPN‐LCE with a typical thickness of 0.5 mm can function not only as linear and bending actuators, but also as a sensor. As a linear actuator, its Young's modulus, actuation stress, and strain are 51.6 MPa, 0.14 MPa and 9%, respectively, reaching skeletal muscles' values. As a bending actuator, its bending strain difference Δε is 1.18% with 3 mN output force. It can also operate as a sensor producing 0.4 mV Open‐Circuit‐Voltage to respond to bending deformation (Δε = 9%). Therefore, this i‐EAD‐IPN‐LCE is a promising system for the fabrication of robust electroactive devices and sensors with multiple degrees of freedom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) play critical roles in driving the pathogenesis of allergic airway inflammation. The mechanisms underlying the regulation of ILC2s remain to be fully understood. Here, we identified neuropilin‐1 (NRP1) as a surface marker of ILC2s in response to IL‐33 stimulation. NRP1 was abundantly expressed in ILC2s from lung under steady state, which was significantly reduced upon IL‐33 stimulation. ILC2s with high expression of NRP1 (NRP1high) displayed lower response to IL‐33, as compared with NRP1low ILC2s. Transcriptional profiling and flow cytometric analysis showed that downregulation of AKT–mTOR signalling participated in the diminished functionality of NRP1high ILC2s. These observations revealed a potential role of NRP1 in ILC2s responses under allergic inflammatory condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Defect suppression via precursor additives is crucial to achieving high efficiency and stable perovskite quantum dot light‐emitting diodes (Pe‐QLEDs). Herein, a strategy using 4‐dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) is developed to simultaneously suppress halide interstitial and vacancy defects by tuning the crystallization process of perovskite quantum dots (Pe‐QDs) through coordinate bonding and chemical circumstance modulation, leading to faster radiative recombination and less carrier accumulation in the device. Meanwhile, the Pe‐QDs with defect suppression demonstrate higher ion migration activation energies. Thanks to the defect suppression strategy with the aid of the alkyl sulfonic group, the obtained Pe‐QDs exhibit an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of up to 20.4% and an operating lifetime of over 100 h in QLED, which is the leading performance of green Pe‐QLEDs. 45. Design, Control, and Validation of a Novel Cable-Driven Series Elastic Actuation System for a Flexible and Portable Back-Support Exoskeleton

Abstract

Various active back-support exoskeletons have been developed to assist manual materials handling work for low back injury prevention. Existing back-support exoskeleton actuation either suffers from rigid transmission structure, or fails to efficiently generate assistance via portable actuation system with flexible transmissions. In this article, a novel cable-driven series elastic actuation (CSEA) system is proposed to realize a flexible and portable back-support exoskeleton design with safe, efficient, and sufficient assistive torque output capability. The CSEA system realizes a flexible actuation based on cable transmission for an ergonomic human–exoskeleton interaction. Based on a torsion spring–support beam mechanism, it achieves an efficient assistance output capability to prevent high cable force demand and resultant lumbar compression, assuring a safe and synergistic operation for flexible exoskeleton actuation. Meanwhile, this mechanism enables the CSEA system to integrate series elastic actuator (SEA) with cable transmission and operates with multiple statuses to leverage SEA advantages and to overcome its torque output limitation. Dynamic model is established for the CSEA system, and a unified torque controller is designed for stable, continuous, and accurate torque control of the CSEA system despite its discontinuous dynamics during operation status transition. The efficacy of the closed-loop CSEA system to enable an ergonomic and efficient back-support exoskeleton actuation with the capability of accurately delivering desired level of assistance is verified via bench tests and human tests. Results verified that the CSEA system actuated exoskeleton can effectively reduce activity of relevant muscles during trunk flexion and extension motions compared to no exoskeleton case, validating successful application of the CSEA system on the exoskeleton for an effective back support effect.
