3. Psychometric Properties of the Subhealth Measurement Scale V1.0 for Assessing Suboptimal Health Status of Midwives: A Multicentre Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Aim. Midwives are prone to suboptimal health status (SHS), while there is a lack of unified measurement standard of SHS for them to early detect and prevent SHS. This study aimed to evaluate validity and reliability of Subhealth Measurement Scale V1.0 (SHMS V1.0) in midwives. Design and Methods. The cross-sectional study had 842 midwives from 46 midwifery institutions in southeastern China completing the SHMS V1.0 with 39 items. Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and concurrent validity of SHMS V1.0 were assessed. Project analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed to assess construct validity. Results. SHMS V1.0 had acceptable reliability with Cronbach's alpha and a test-retest reliability coefficient of 0.908 and 0.804, respectively. The correlation coefficients between each item and corresponding dimension and those between dimension and corresponding subscale were all greater than 0.4. The CFA supported the structure of SHMS V1.0 with strong factor loadings and excellent fit indexes in the first-order and modified second-order factor model, illustrating that SHMS V1.0 had good construct validity among midwives. The concurrent validity for SHMS V1.0 showed large correlation with FS-14, but the social subscale showed medium correlations with fatigue, inferring that SHMS V1.0 can more comprehensively reflect SHS of midwives than FS-14, especially for social health symptoms. Practice Implications. SHMS V1.0 with excellent psychometric properties can accurately and reliably evaluate the SHS of midwives. Abstract

The economical removal of organics from sodium aluminate solutions has been required for decades. Based on security filtration using tricalcium aluminate hexahydrate (TCA) as a filter aid, a novel short process to eliminate impurity particles and remove organics simultaneously was presented. Ultrafine TCA samples with poor crystallization, high TCA content, high surface free energy, and large lattice distortion were prepared in the concentrated sodium aluminate solution. The zeta potential of the TCA binary mixture in alkaline solutions was linearly depended on the TCA content, suggesting the additivity of the zeta potential in the binary mixture. The variation in the electrical double layer of the TCA binary mixture was demonstrated in the alkaline solution. Furthermore, the ultrafine TCA exhibited a high adsorption capacity for organics with long alkyl chains and high relative-molecular-mass. The adsorption capacity of 69.69 mg/g organic carbon for sodium humate was achieved, whereas the digestion at a high temperature remarkably reduced the adsorption capacity of TCA.

Abstract

Background: Parenting sense of competence is not only indispensable to the wellbeing of the parents of premature infants, but is also pivotal to the overall development of these infants. This study examined the level of parenting sense of competence and its associated factors in Chinese parents of preterm infants. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed at a university teaching hospital in Fuzhou (China) from December 2021 to April 2022. Data were collected using the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, Social Support Rating Scale, Parenting Care Knowledge Subscale, Parenting Care Skill Subscale, and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Results: A total of 401 Chinese parents were included in the analysis. The average parenting sense of competence scale score was 70.93 ± 13.06. After controlling for demographic characteristics, parenting knowledge (β = 0.149, P = 0.013), parenting skills (β = 0.241, P < 0.001), social support (β = 0.184, P < 0.001) and depression (β = −0.272, P < 0.001), were significantly associated with the parenting sense of competence score, and explained 43.60% of the variance in this score. Conclusions: Chinese parents of preterm infants were found to have a moderate parenting sense of competence. This could be further improved through efforts aimed at reducing depressive symptoms and increasing parenting knowledge, parenting skills, and social support. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We aimed to assess the feeding pattern and influencing factors within six weeks postpartum on exclusive breastfeeding duration among Chinese mothers. This study was conducted using 2:1 matched case-control study. Cases and controls were matched for maternal age, parity and mode of birth. A total of 210 women were included. Approximately 67.9% of women stopped exclusive breastfeeding within the first six weeks postpartum. Maternal non-exclusive breastfeeding intention, lower maternal educational level, mother-infant skin to skin contact over one hour, unsatisfied breastfeeding self-evaluation and maternal unhealthy condition within the first six weeks were risk factors for ceasing exclusive breastfeeding early.
