16. Changes in plasma biomarkers differentiate clinical stages of Alzheimer's disease using immunomagnetic reduction assays.

Abstract

Background: Many groups have been using immunomagnetic reduction (IMR) for assaying plasma amyloid-β 1-40 (Aβ1-40) peptide, Aβ1-42 peptide and total tau protein (T-Tau) in cognitively normal controls (NC), patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD). Tremendous results have been independently reported. Objective: We used traditional knowledge databases (e.g., PubMed, Embase), papers published at international conferences, and private communications to obtain data involving the use of IMR assay for plasma biomarkers of plasma Aβ1-40, Aβ1-42, and T-Tau in NC, aMCI, and ADD. Methods: Results of thirty studies were analyzed, including twenty-five studies published in papers, two studies presented at conferences and three unpublished studies. Results: Among the thirty studies, there were 1189 subjects of NC, 544 aMCI patients and 853 ADD patients. The average value of plasma Aβ1-40 in subjects significantly decreased from NC (59.72 pg/ml) to aMCI (45.92 pg/ml, p < 0.0001), which was no significant different from ADD (48.34 pg/ml, p > 0.05). The average level of plasma Aβ1-42 significantly increased from NC (15.72 pg/ml) to aMCI (17.66 pg/ml, p < 0.0001), which was not significantly different from ADD (19.39 pg/ml, p > 0.05). However, the average level of plasma T-Tau significantly increased from NC (17.92 pg/ml) to aMCI (28.26 pg/ml, p < 0.0001), further significantly increased to AD (35.51 pg/ml, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Plasma Aβ1-40, Aβ1-42, and T-Tau levels are able to discriminate NC from patients with aMCI and ADD. Plasma T-Tau levels are disease-severity dependent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. Nurturing and Enhancing Creativity of Nursing Students in Taiwan: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Abstract

Creativity and innovation are considered important measures of core competence in Taiwan for students of all levels, including nursing students. Integrating creativity with interdisciplinary teaching modules could increase creativity for nursing students; however, this has not been empirically determined. The purpose of this study was to determine if incorporating interdisciplinary teaching into a teaching for creativity module (TCM) could enhance creative thinking and creative abilities of nursing students. Students enrolled in a capstone nursing course for the development of healthcare-related products were divided into 2 groups. Both groups participated in the 18-week course; however, one group received creativity training with interdisciplinary teaching during the course, which was taught by nursing faculty who completed a TCM workshop. Students who received the interdisciplinary TCM intervention scored significantly higher than controls on measures of creative thinking. Our findings suggest a TCM program, which incorporates interdisciplinary teaching, and instruction in techniques for creativity, such as brainstorming, attribute listing, assessment matrix, and paired comparison, can stimulate divergent thinking abilities of nursing students.

39. Cognitive impairment and risk of future stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract

BackgroundSeveral studies have assessed the link between cognitive impairment and risk of future stroke, but results have been inconsistent. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies to determine the association between cognitive impairment and risk of future stroke.MethodsWe searched MEDLINE and Embase (1966 to November 2013) and conducted a manual search of bibliographies of relevant retrieved articles and reviews. We included cohort studies that reported multivariable adjusted relative risks and 95% confidence intervals or standard errors for stroke with respect to baseline cognitive impairment.ResultsWe identified 18 cohort studies (total 121 879 participants) and 7799 stroke events. Pooled analysis of results from all studies showed that stroke risk increased among patients with cognitive impairment at baseline (relative risk [RR] 1.39, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.24-1.56). The results were similar when we restricted the analysis to studies that used a widely adopted definition of cognitive impairment (i.e., Mini-Mental State Examination score < 25 or nearest equivalent) (RR 1.64, 95% CI 1.46-1.84). Cognitive impairment at baseline was also associated with an increased risk of fatal stroke (RR 1.68, 95% CI 1.21-2.33) and ischemic stroke (RR 1.65, 95% CI 1.41-1.93).InterpretationBaseline cognitive impairment was associated with a significantly higher risk of future stroke, especially ischemic and fatal stroke.
