Abstract

The Super $\tau$-Charm facility (STCF) is an electron-positron collider proposed by the Chinese particle physics community. It is designed to operate in a center-of-mass energy range from 2 to 7 GeV with a peak luminosity of $0.5\times 10^{35}{\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$ or higher. The STCF will produce a data sample about a factor of 100 larger than that by the present $\tau$-Charm factory -- the BEPCII, providing a unique platform for exploring the asymmetry of matter-antimatter (charge-parity violation), in-depth studies of the internal structure of hadrons and the nature of non-perturbative strong interactions, as well as searching for exotic hadrons and physics beyond the Standard Model. The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This document presents the physics opportunities at the STCF, describes conceptual designs of the STCF detector system, and discusses future plans for detector R\&D and physics case studies.

Abstract

We present the first direct measurement of the atomic mass of a superheavy nuclide. Atoms of $^{257}$Db ($Z$=105) were produced online at the RIKEN Nishina Center for Accelerator-Based Science using the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{208}$Pb($^{51}$V, 2n)$^{257}$Db. The gas-filled recoil ion separator GARIS-II was used to suppress both the unreacted primary beam and some transfer products, prior to delivering the energetic beam of $^{257}$Db ions to a helium gas-filled ion stopping cell wherein they were thermalized. Thermalized $^{257}$Db$^{3+}$ ions were then transferred to a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph for mass analysis. An alpha particle detector embedded in the ion time-of-flight detector allowed disambiguation of the rare $^{257}$Db$^{3+}$ time-of-flight detection events from background by means of correlation with characteristic $\alpha$-decays. The extreme sensitivity of this technique allowed a precision atomic mass determination from 11 events. The mass excess was determined to be $100\,063(231)_\textrm{stat}(132)_\textrm{sys}$~keV/c$^2$. Comparing to several mass models, we show the technique can be used to unambiguously determine the atomic number as $Z$=105 and should allow similar evaluations for heavier species in future work., Comment: Submitted to PRC as Rapid Comm., 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Using a sample of $1.31\times 10^9$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector, we report the first observation of spin polarization of $\Lambda$ and $\bar\Lambda$ hyperons from the coherent production in the $J/\psi\to\Lambda\bar\Lambda$ decay. We measure the phase between the hadronic form factors to be $\Delta\Phi=(42.4\pm0.6\pm0.5)^\circ$. The decay parameters for $\Lambda\to p\pi^-$ ($\alpha_-$), $\bar\Lambda\to\bar p\pi^+$ ($\alpha_+$) and $\bar\Lambda\to\bar n\pi^0$ ($\bar\alpha_0$) are measured to be $\alpha_-=0.750\pm0.009\pm0.004$, $\alpha_+=-0.758\pm0.010\pm0.007$ and $\bar\alpha_0=-0.692\pm0.016\pm0.006$, respectively. The obtained value of $\alpha_-$ is higher by $(17\pm 3)\%$ than the current world average. In addition, the $CP$ asymmetry of $-0.006\pm0.012\pm0.007$ is extracted with substantially improved precision. The ratio $\bar{\alpha}_0/\alpha_{+} = 0.913\pm 0.028 \pm 0.012$ is also measured., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental physical process in various astrophysical, space, and laboratory environments. Many pieces of evidence for magnetic reconnection have been uncovered. However, its specific processes that could be fragmented and turbulent have been short of direct observational evidence. Here, we present observations of a super-hot current sheet during SOL2017-09-10T X8.2-class solar flare that display the fragmented and turbulent nature of magnetic reconnection. As bilateral plasmas converge toward the current sheet, significant plasma heating and non-thermal motions are detected therein. Two oppositely directed outflow jets are intermittently expelled out of the fragmenting current sheet, whose intensity shows a power-law distribution in spatial frequency domain. The intensity and velocity of the sunward outflow jets also display a power-law distribution in temporal frequency domain. The length-to-width ratio of the current sheet is estimated to be larger than theoretical threshold of and thus ensures occurrence of tearing mode instability. Abstract

High-spin structure of $^{109}$In has been investigated with the $^{100}$Mo($^{14}$N, 5$n$)$^{109}$In reaction at a beam energy of 78 MeV using the in-beam $\gamma$ spectroscopic method. The level scheme of $^{109}$In has been modified considerably and extended by 46 new $\gamma$-rays to the highest excited state at 8.979 MeV and $J^{\pi}$=(45/2$^{+}$). The new level scheme consists of eight bands, six of which are identified as dipole bands. The configurations have been tentatively assigned with the help of the systematics of neighboring odd-$A$ indium isotopes and the experimental aligned angular momenta. The dipole bands are then compared with the titled axis cranking calculation in the framework of covariant density function theory (TAC-CDFT). The results of theoretical calculation based on the configurations, which involve one proton hole at the $g_{9/2}$ orbital and two or four unpaired neutrons at $g_{7/2}$, $d_{5/2}$ and $h_{11/2}$ orbitals, show that the shape of $^{109}$In undergoes an evolution on both $\beta$ and $\gamma$ deformations and possible chirality is suggested in $^{109}$In., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables, 75 conference

Abstract

CRISPR-Cas systems provide bacteria and archaea with programmable immunity against mobile genetic elements. Evolutionary pressure by CRISPR-Cas has driven bacteriophage to evolve small protein inhibitors, anti-CRISPRs (Acrs), that block Cas enzyme function by wide-ranging mechanisms. We show here that the inhibitor AcrVA4 uses a previously undescribed strategy to recognize the L. bacterium Cas12a (LbCas12a) pre-crRNA processing nuclease, forming a Cas12a dimer, and allosterically inhibiting DNA binding. The Ac. species Cas12a (AsCas12a) enzyme, widely used for genome editing applications, contains an ancestral helical bundle that blocks AcrVA4 binding and allows it to escape anti-CRISPR recognition. Using biochemical, microbiological, and human cell editing experiments, we show that Cas12a orthologs can be rendered either sensitive or resistant to AcrVA4 through rational structural engineering informed by evolution. Together, these findings explain a new mode of CRISPR-Cas inhibition and illustrate how structural variability in Cas effectors can drive opportunistic co-evolution of inhibitors by bacteriophage.

Abstract

Fragmentation cross section of $^{28}$Si + $^{9}$Be reaction at 75.8 MeV/u was analyzed for studying the decay mode of single-proton emission in $^{21}$Al (the proton-rich nucleus with neutron closed-shell of $N = 8$ and $T_z = -5/2$). With the comparison between the measured fragmentation cross section and the theoretical cross section produced by EPAX3.1a for the observed nuclei (i.e. $^{20}$Mg, $^{21}$Al and $^{22}$Si), the expected yield for a particle stable $^{21}$Al was estimated. With the exponential decay law, an upper limit of half-life of $13$ ns was determined. Using the single-proton penetration model, the upper limit of single-proton separation energy of $-105$ keV was deduced. This deduced mass limit agrees with the microscopic calculation based on nucleon-nucleon (NN) + three-nucleon (3N) forces in $sdf_{7/2}p_{3/2}$ valence space, which indicates the importance of 3N forces in $^{21}$Al., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures

12. Single‐Hemisphere Oxygen Outflow From Earth's Subauroral Zone.

Abstract

Besides the cusp, polar cap, and auroral oval, the nightside subauroral zone has also recently been reported as a source region of the ionospheric oxygen outflows. However, the detailed mass and energy sources of these ions remain open questions. Here, we address this issue from the perspective of the response of conjugate hemispheres. Investigation of Van Allen Probes data demonstrates a notable preference of oxygen outflows from the nightside subauroral zone from the sunlit hemisphere. This characteristic eliminates the possibility of nightside auroral precipitation playing a significant role, as it is more prominent in darkness. Instead, it highlights sunlight‐induced ionization as the mass source and enhanced plasma waves from the magnetotail as the energy source. The results presented here further support the nightside subauroral zone as an independent source of magnetospheric oxygen ions. Plain Language Summary: Single‐charged oxygen ions, believed to ultimately originate from the ionosphere, are the main carriers of the ring current during severe space weather, including super geomagnetic storms and substorms. Therefore, comprehending where and how they come from is crucial for understanding the magnetosphere and space weather. Recent studies have reported the nightside subauroral zone as a source region, besides the usually cited cusp, polar cap, and auroral oval. However, the detailed mechanisms for the subauroral oxygen outflows remain open questions. In this study, we address this issue by studying how opposite hemispheres react simultaneously in subauroral oxygen outflow events observed by the Van Allen Probes. Data analysis reveals that these outflows tend to occur in the local summer hemisphere, where the nightside subauroral ionosphere receives more sunlight compared to the opposite hemisphere. This feature rules out nightside auroral precipitation playing a significant role, as it is more noticeable in the dark. Instead, it points to sunlight‐induced ionization as the source of mass and enhanced plasma waves from the magnetotail as the source of energy. Our findings reinforce the idea that the nightside subauroral zone is an important source of ionospheric oxygen outflows. Abstract

We report the observation of unidirectional magnetoresistance (UMR) in the ferrimagnetic insulator CoFe2O4(CFO)/Pt heterostructures, which stem from the giant interfacial Rashba–Edelstein effect. Furthermore, UMR has been found to show sign reversal and amplitude enhancement characteristics with decrease in temperature. We have ascribed it to the modulated distortion of Fermi contours due to pronounced spin canting at low temperatures. The presence of spin canting induced interfacial magnetic state has also been demonstrated by spin Hall magnetoresistance in CFO/Pt/Co/Al2O3 films. Our work reveals the interfacial magnetic state modulated UMR in CFO/Pt bilayers, thereby paving the way for extending its applications in ferrimagnet-based spintronic devices. Abstract

Studies commonly assumed that variations in ionospheric conductance were insignificant and proposed that vorticities can be a reliable proxy or diagnostic for ionospheric field‐aligned currents (FACs). We propose a complete method for measuring FACs using data from the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network radar and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program. In our method, the FACs are determined by three terms. The first term is referred to as magnetospheric‐origin FACs, while the second and third terms are known as ionospheric‐origin FACs. This method incorporates height‐integrated conductances based on observational data, thereby addressing the limitation of assuming uniform conductances. Different from previous works, we can calculate FACs at a low altitude of 250 km and obtain high‐resolution measurements within observable areas. Another advantage of this method lies in its ability to directly calculate and analyze the impact of ionospheric vorticity and conductance on FACs. We apply this method to obtain FACs in the Northern Hemisphere from 2010 to 2016 and analyze the distributions of height‐integrated conductances and total FACs. Our analysis reveals that the average FACs clearly exhibit the large‐scale R1 and R2 FAC systems. We conduct statistical analysis on magnetospheric‐origin FACs and ionospheric‐origin FACs. Our findings show that within the auroral oval, ionospheric‐origin FACs reach a comparable level to magnetospheric‐origin FACs. However, ionospheric‐origin FACs are significantly minor and almost negligible in other regions. This implies that height‐integrated conductance gradients and vorticities play equally significant roles within the auroral oval, whereas vorticities dominate in other regions. Our findings reveal that both height‐integrated conductance gradients and vorticities significantly influence FACs in auroral emission areas. However, the influence of vorticities is more pronounced in other areas. Abstract

This article reports an improved independent measurement of neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment. Electron antineutrinos were identified by inverse $\beta$-decays with the emitted neutron captured by hydrogen, yielding a data-set with principally distinct uncertainties from that with neutrons captured by gadolinium. With the final two of eight antineutrino detectors installed, this study used 621 days of data including the previously reported 217-day data set with six detectors. The dominant statistical uncertainty was reduced by 49%. Intensive studies of the cosmogenic muon-induced $^9$Li and fast neutron backgrounds and the neutron-capture energy selection efficiency, resulted in a reduction of the systematic uncertainty by 26%. The deficit in the detected number of antineutrinos at the far detectors relative to the expected number based on the near detectors yielded $\sin^22\theta_{13} = 0.071 \pm 0.011$ in the three-neutrino-oscillation framework. Abstract

The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) refers to a region where the strength of the magnetic field is notably weaker compared to a dipole field. While previous studies have primarily focused on its effects on the inner radiation belt, this study investigates its impact on the aurora system. By analyzing 2 years' worth of data obtained by the Fengyun‐3E/ACMag instrument, we discover that magnetic fluctuations within the auroral oval are significantly weaker in the longitude sector corresponding to the SAA, as compared to those outside this area. This characteristic remains permanent and independent of seasons and geomagnetic activities. Additional investigation using Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (DMSP/SSUSI) observations reveals a similar phenomenon in the auroral intensity. Therefore, our results demonstrate that the SAA substantially weakens the aurora system, shedding new light on the effects of magnetic anomalies on planetary auroras and magnetosphere‐ionosphere‐thermosphere coupling. Plain Language Summary: The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is a unique location on Earth where the magnetic field is weaker than normal. This region has drawn a lot of attention because its weakened magnetic field brings the inner Van Allen radiation belt unusually close to the Earth's surface, which poses a threat to satellites passing through it. Here, we uncovered another interesting aspect of the SAA: its impact on the aurora system. To investigate this, we first examined 2 years' worth of data from the ACMag instruments on the Fengyun‐3E satellite, which orbits the Earth at an altitude of 836 km in a dawn‐dusk, Sun‐synchronous orbit. Our findings reveal that the magnetic fluctuations within the southern auroral oval are significantly weaker in the region that aligns with the SAA. This weakening effect is consistently present, regardless of the season or the level of geomagnetic activity. To reinforce our results, we also analyzed auroral intensity from the Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (SSUSI) instrument on the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellite, and it corroborated the same weakening trend in this data set. In conclusion, our observations demonstrate that the SAA has a substantial impact on weakening the aurora system. This discovery deepens our understanding of how magnetic anomalies can influence planetary auroras. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the therapeutic effect of open reduction and internal fixation with hollow nail internal fixation for Pauwels type III femoral neck fracture. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 2016 to February 2021, a total of 100 eligible patients with Pauwels type III femoral neck fracture were involved in this study and divided into two groups randomly: the combined remedy group and the closed therapy group, with 50 patients in each group. After that, 50 subjects in the combined remedy group were treated with open reduction and support plate combined with hollow screw internal fixation, and the treatment conditions were observed and recorded. The closed therapy group received routine treatment. RESULTS: A mong the 1 00 p atients s elected, the operation time of the combined remedy group was significantly lower than that of the closed therapy group, and the intraoperative bleeding was also significantly less. In the closed therapy group, the time of getting out of bed after the operation and the excellent and good rate were better; moreover, the functional score and pain score of three months after the operation were significantly better than that of one month after the operation. The functional score and pain score of one month after the operation were not statistically significant for the combined remedy group or the closed therapy group. CONCLUSIONS: In the treatment of Pauwels type III femoral neck fracture with open reduction and internal fixation combined with hollow nail internal fixation, the operation time and intraoperative bleeding volume were significantly decreased, but the postoperative recovery time was enhanced compared to that of total joint replacement. After the operation, the functional score and pain score had a significant relationship with the recovery time, and there was no significant relationship with the type of treatment. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to predict the mechanism of Osteoking in preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the lower limb by network pharmacology and molecular docking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The relevant active components and targets of Osteoking were collected through the TCMSP database, and the relevant disease targets of DVT were collected through the GeneCards, OMIM, and DisGeNET databases. The intersecting gene targets of Osteoking and DVT were obtained using Venny 2.1.0 software. PPI network construction and core target selection using Cytoscape 3.9.0 software. The Metascape database was used for GO and KEGG enrichment analysis of relevant targets. Finally, the molecular docking of the main active components and key targets was carried out. RESULTS: There are 361 potential targets and 71 core targets of Osteoking in preventing deep vein thrombosis of the lower limb. Signal pathways are involved in various diseases such as cancer, diabetic complications, atherosclerosis, and more. Some of the most common pathways include AGE-RAGE signaling pathway and Calcium signaling pathway. Molecular docking results showed that the main active components of Osteoking had relatively stable binding activities with the key targets. CONCLUSIONS: Osteoking can play a role through multiple targets and multiple signal pathways to prevent the formation of deep venous thrombosis of the lower limb after fracture. 40. A two-dimensional adsorption kinetic model for thermal hysteresis activity in antifreeze proteins

Abstract

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) and antifreeze glycoproteins (AFGPs), collectively abbreviated as AF(G)Ps, are synthesized by various organisms to enable their cells to survive in subzero environments. Although the AF(G)Ps are markedly diverse in structure, they all function by adsorbing to the surface of embryonic ice crystals to inhibit their growth. This adsorption results in a freezing temperature depression without an appreciable change in the melting temperature. The difference between the melting and freezing temperatures, termed thermal hysteresis (TH), is used to detect and quantify the antifreeze activity. Insights from crystallographic structures of a number of AFPs have led to a good understanding of the ice-protein interaction features. Computational studies have focused either on verifying a specific model of AFP-ice interaction or on understanding the protein-induced changes in the ice crystal morphology. In order to explain the origin of TH, we propose a novel two-dimensional adsorption kinetic model between AFPs and ice crystal surfaces. The validity of the model has been demonstrated by reproducing the TH curve on two different beta-helical AFPs upon increasing the protein concentration. In particular, this model is able to accommodate the change in the TH behavior observed experimentally when the size of the AFPs is increased systematically. Our results suggest that in addition to the specificity of the AFPs for the ice, the coverage of the AFPs on the ice surface is an equally necessary condition for their TH activity.
