More and more biological valves have been used in aortic valve replacement in the world due to their unique advantages; however, due to the poor durability of biological valves and other reasons, valve deterioration is an inevitable problem of artificial biological valves. Once severe valve deterioration occurs, it can lead to valve stenosis or regurgitation, which may result in cardiac enlargement and cardiac insufficiency and often require valve re-replacement. Surgical valve replacement has long been the gold standard for the treatment of aortic valve deterioration, but since biological valves are mostly used in the elderly and there is a high risk of surgical valve re-replacement, many patients are rejected from surgery. In recent years, due to the accumulation of experience in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and related technical advances, it has been increasingly applied in the treatment of biological valve deterioration, especially the application of “valve-in-valve” TAVR.

This study aims to clarify the mechanism of slurry support and its effect at different stages of slurry infiltration in shield construction. The analysis of various expressions of slurry support throughout the entire excavation cycle is based on the theories of slurry infiltration effects and the cutting action of the cutters. Furthermore, the limit support pressure calculation method at the tunnel face is modified considering the slurry support mechanism observed during different slurry infiltration stages. Some of the main conclusions drawn are as follows. (1) When slurry deep infiltration occurs, the main form of slurry support is the seepage force acting on the soil skeleton. At this stage, the limit support pressure from the filter cake model will not be sufficient to meet the tunnel face stability requirements. (2) The effectiveness of slurry support is influenced by both the slurry infiltration state and the cutting action of the cutterhead. Slurry infiltration and shield tunneling together create a quasi-static equilibrium state, in which slurry support is effective only when the infiltration velocity corresponding to this state is greater than the critical velocity. (3) And the influence of shield tunneling parameters on the slurry support mechanism is significant. Compared with the cutter's penetration degree, the cutter's rotational speed has a more pronounced effect on the conversion rate of slurry support pressure at the shield tunnel face. Using the Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine (VSM) for shaft construction is an emerging modern technology, which is also currently one of the most advanced techniques in the field of shaft sinking. Current research on VSM technology primarily focuses on mechanical and technical issues, neglecting the impact of the construction on the surrounding soil and the structure itself. This oversight leaves structural design lacking a reliable foundation. Additionally, there is insufficient information on the role of reinforcement design during construction in soft soils. These engineering challenges have hindered the widespread implementation of this new technology. Therefore, a series of numerical models were used to analyse the mechanical behaviour of shaft and soil during or after the sinking process, with the aim of addressing these gaps by investigating the influence of shafts constructed using VSM technology, and providing a scientific basis for reinforcement design in soft soil. The case study shows that increasing the soil-cement strength does not have a significant effect on the overall deformation of the soil surrounding the shaft, but leads to a notable reduction in the plastic zone volume, subsequently enhancing the overall stability of the neighbouring soil. The ring bottom beam design effectively reduces convergence deformation by about 50%, while also improving the horizontal internal force distribution near the cutting edge.
