5. Homogenizing elastic properties of large digital rock images by combining CNN with hierarchical homogenization method

Abstract

Determining effective elastic properties of rocks from their pore-scale digital images is a key goal of digital rock physics (DRP). Direct numerical simulation (DNS) of elastic behavior, however, incurs high computational cost; and surrogate machine learning (ML) model, particularly convolutional neural network (CNN), show promises to accelerate homogenization process. 3D CNN models, however, are unable to handle large images due to memory issues. To address this challenge, we propose a novel method that combines 3D CNN with hierarchical homogenization method (HHM). The surrogate 3D CNN model homogenizes only small subimages, and a DNS is used to homogenize the intermediate image obtained by assembling small subimages. The 3D CNN model is designed to output the homogenized elastic constants within the Hashin-Shtrikman (HS) bounds of the input images. The 3D CNN model is first trained on data comprising equal proportions of five sandstone (quartz mineralogy) images, and, subsequently, fine-tuned for specific rocks using transfer learning. The proposed method is applied to homogenize the rock images of size 300x300x300 and 600x600x600 voxels, and the predicted homogenized elastic moduli are shown to agree with that obtained from the brute-force DNS. The transferability of the trained 3D CNN model (using transfer learning) is further demonstrated by predicting the homogenized elastic moduli of a limestone rock with calcite mineralogy. The surrogate 3D CNN model in combination with the HHM is thus shown to be a promising tool for the homogenization of large 3D digital rock images and other random media, Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

11. Computation of effective elastic moduli of rocks using hierarchical homogenization

Abstract

This work focuses on computing the homogenized elastic properties of rocks from 3D micro-computed-tomography (micro-CT) scanned images. The accurate computation of homogenized properties of rocks, archetypal random media, requires both resolution of intricate underlying microstructure and large field of view, resulting in huge micro-CT images. Homogenization entails solving the local elasticity problem computationally which can be prohibitively expensive for a huge image. To mitigate this problem, we use a renormalization method inspired scheme, the hierarchical homogenization method, where a large image is partitioned into smaller subimages. The individual subimages are separately homogenized using periodic boundary conditions, and then assembled into a much smaller intermediate image. The intermediate image is again homogenized, subject to the periodic boundary condition, to find the final homogenized elastic constant of the original image. An FFT-based elasticity solver is used to solve the associated periodic elasticity problem. The error in the homogenized elastic constant is empirically shown to follow a power law scaling with exponent -1 with respect to the subimage size across all five microstructures of rocks. We further show that the inclusion of surrounding materials during the homogenization of the small subimages reduces error in the final homogenized elastic moduli while still respecting the power law with the exponent of -1. This power law scaling is then exploited to determine a better approximation of the large heterogeneous microstructures based on Richardson extrapolation

Abstract

LiCoO2 coated with graphene and PSS:PEDOT（GP-LCO）is synthesized by a facile and scalable method. The structure and morphology of LiCoO2（LCO）and GP-LCO have been investigated by X-ray diffraction（XRD）and scanning electron microscopy（SEM）. Transmission electron microscopy（TEM）further demonstrate the existence of graphene and PSS:PEDOT. The electrochemical properties of the composites are investigated by cyclic voltammetry and AC impedance measurements, which show that the conductive film of graphene（1%）and PSS:PEDOT（2%）on the surface significantly decreases the charge transfer resistance and improves the cycle stability of LiCoO2. Galvanostatic charge-discharge test reveals that with only 2% Super P as conductive additive, the GP-LCO delivers a capacity of 173.9 mAh/g at 0.1 C and 118.0 mAh/g at 10 C, which are higher than the pristine LCO in the potential range of 3.0-4.5 V（vs. Li/Li+）. Moreover, it is clearly noticed that the GP-LCO exhibits a capacity retention of 76.6% after 100 cycles at 0.1C, while the LCO only presents a capacity retention of 41.1%.

Abstract

Abstract. Mountain pine beetle (MPB) outbreaks in the western United States result in widespread tree mortality, transforming forest structure within watersheds. While there is evidence that these changes can alter the timing and quantity of streamflow, there is substantial variation in both the magnitude and direction of hydrologic responses, and the climatic and environmental mechanisms driving this variation are not well understood. Herein, we coupled an eco-hydrologic model (RHESSys) with a beetle effects model and applied it to a semiarid watershed, Trail Creek, in the Bigwood River basin in central Idaho, USA, to examine how varying degrees of beetle-caused tree mortality influence water yield. Simulation results show that water yield during the first 15 years after beetle outbreak is controlled by interactions between interannual climate variability, the extent of vegetation mortality, and long-term aridity. During wet years, water yield after a beetle outbreak increased with greater tree mortality; this was driven by mortality-caused decreases in evapotranspiration. During dry years, water yield decreased at low-to-medium mortality but increased at high mortality. The mortality threshold for the direction of change was location specific. The change in water yield also varied spatially along aridity gradients during dry years. In wetter areas of the Trail Creek basin, post-outbreak water yield decreased at low mortality (driven by an increase in ground evaporation) and increased when vegetation mortality was greater than 40 % (driven by a decrease in canopy evaporation and transpiration). In contrast, in more water-limited areas, water yield typically decreased after beetle outbreaks, regardless of mortality level (although the driving mechanisms varied). Our findings highlight the complexity and variability of hydrologic responses and suggest that long-term (i.e., multi-decadal mean) aridity can be a useful indicator for the direction of water yield changes after a disturbance.
