Abstract

Some animal-derived fatty acids, including conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), appear to inhibit carcinogenesis and there is some evidence to suggest that increased milk consumption is linked to reduced risk of breast cancer. A new study seeks to obtain concentrated natural CLA from milk fat by urea complexation. Results show there is a potential to concentrate natural CLA to a biologically effective level using crystallization.

Abstract

A study used 2 different strawberry cultivations to compare the effects of controlled atmosphere treatments on the physical qualities and antioxidant compounds, antioxidant activity and antiproliferative activity. Elevated [CO.sub.2] atmospheres showed delay in color changes and increased the firmness of the strawberry but the anthocyanins and flavonoids, and total antioxidant activity were higher in air-stored fruit than in [CO.sub.2] stored fruit.

Abstract

The magnetic response of the Sm[O.sub.1-x][F.sub.x]FeAs family of superconductors is examined as a function of pressure up to 1.2 GPa. The results have formed a stringent test of competing models for the interpretation of the superconducting pairing mechanism in fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxyarsenides.
