As the primary standard protocol for modern cars, the Controller Area Network (CAN) is a critical research target for automotive cybersecurity threats and autonomous applications. As the decoding specification of CAN is a proprietary black-box maintained by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), conducting related research and industry developments can be challenging without a comprehensive understanding of the meaning of CAN messages. In this paper, we propose a fully automated reverse-engineering system, named ByCAN, to reverse engineer CAN messages. ByCAN outperforms existing research by introducing byte-level clusters and integrating multiple features at both byte and bit levels. ByCAN employs the clustering and template matching algorithms to automatically decode the specifications of CAN frames without the need for prior knowledge. Experimental results demonstrate that ByCAN achieves high accuracy in slicing and labeling performance, i.e., the identification of CAN signal boundaries and labels. Integrating sharded blockchain with IoT presents a solution for trust issues and optimized data flow. Sharding boosts blockchain scalability by dividing its nodes into parallel shards, yet it's vulnerable to the $1\%$ attacks where dishonest nodes target a shard to corrupt the entire blockchain. Balancing security with scalability is pivotal for such systems. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) adeptly handles dynamic, complex systems and multi-dimensional optimization. This paper introduces a Trust-based and DRL-driven (\textsc{TbDd}) framework, crafted to counter shard collusion risks and dynamically adjust node allocation, enhancing throughput while maintaining network security. With a comprehensive trust evaluation mechanism, \textsc{TbDd} discerns node types and performs targeted resharding against potential threats. The model maximizes tolerance for dishonest nodes, optimizes node movement frequency, ensures even node distribution in shards, and balances sharding risks. Rigorous evaluations prove \textsc{TbDd}'s superiority over conventional random-, community-, and trust-based sharding methods in shard risk equilibrium and reducing cross-shard transactions.

We for the first time propose, implement, and evaluate a practical Split Unlearning framework by enabling SISA-based machine unlearning (SP'21) in Split Learning (SL). We introduce SplitWiper and SplitWiper+, which leverage the inherent "Sharded" structure of SL and address the issues where existing SL methods compromise the "Isolated" principle of SISA due to the tight coupling between clients and the server. This coupling involves frequent bidirectional data flows and iterative training across all clients. We resolve these challenges by designing a new one-way-one-off propagation scheme. Our design decouples the propagation of neural signals between clients and between clients and the server, enabling SISA-based unlearning in SplitWiper, even with absent clients. SplitWiper+ further enhances client label privacy against the server under this scheme by using differential privacy. Our extensive experiments across diverse data distributions and tasks demonstrate that SplitWiper, which involves only the requesting clients, achieves 0% unlearning accuracy and is over 108% more effective in retaining accuracy than existing SL methods, while maintaining constant overhead through its one-way-one-off propagation, reducing computational and communication costs by over 99%. SplitWiper+ preserves over 90% of label privacy when sharing masked labels with servers.

As a distributed learning, Federated Learning (FL) faces two challenges: the unbalanced distribution of training data among participants, and the model attack by Byzantine nodes. In this paper, we consider the long-tailed distribution with the presence of Byzantine nodes in the FL scenario. A novel two-layer aggregation method is proposed for the rejection of malicious models and the advisable selection of valuable models containing tail class data information. We introduce the concept of think tank to leverage the wisdom of all participants. Preliminary experiments validate that the think tank can make effective model selections for global aggregation.

The demand for intelligent industries and smart services based on big data is rising rapidly with the increasing digitization and intelligence of the modern world. This survey comprehensively reviews Blockchained Federated Learning (BlockFL) that joins the benefits of both Blockchain and Federated Learning to provide a secure and efficient solution for the demand. We compare the existing BlockFL models in four Internet-of-Things (IoT) application scenarios: Personal IoT (PIoT), Industrial IoT (IIoT), Internet of Vehicles (IoV), and Internet of Health Things (IoHT), with a focus on security and privacy, trust and reliability, efficiency, and data heterogeneity. Our analysis shows that the features of decentralization and transparency make BlockFL a secure and effective solution for distributed model training, while the overhead and compatibility still need further study. It also reveals the unique challenges of each domain presents unique challenges, e.g., the requirement of accommodating dynamic environments in IoV and the high demands of identity and permission management in IoHT, in addition to some common challenges identified, such as privacy, resource constraints, and data heterogeneity. Furthermore, we examine the existing technologies that can benefit BlockFL, thereby helping researchers and practitioners to make informed decisions about the selection and development of BlockFL for various IoT application scenarios.

Location privacy is critical in vehicular networks, where drivers' trajectories and personal information can be exposed, allowing adversaries to launch data and physical attacks that threaten drivers' safety and personal security. This survey reviews comprehensively different localization techniques, including widely used ones like sensing infrastructure-based, optical vision-based, and cellular radio-based localization, and identifies inadequately addressed location privacy concerns. We classify Location Privacy Preserving Mechanisms (LPPMs) into user-side, server-side, and user-server-interface-based, and evaluate their effectiveness. Our analysis shows that the user-server-interface-based LPPMs have received insufficient attention in the literature, despite their paramount importance in vehicular networks. Further, we examine methods for balancing data utility and privacy protection for existing LPPMs in vehicular networks and highlight emerging challenges from future upper-layer location privacy attacks, wireless technologies, and network convergences. By providing insights into the relationship between localization techniques and location privacy, and evaluating the effectiveness of different LPPMs, this survey can help inform the development of future LPPMs in vehicular networks.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can potentially combat jamming attacks by diffusing jamming signals. This paper jointly optimizes user selection, channel allocation, modulation-coding, and RIS configuration in a multiuser OFDMA system under a jamming attack. This problem is non-trivial and has never been addressed, because of its mixed-integer programming nature and difficulties in acquiring channel state information (CSI) involving the RIS and jammer. We propose a new deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based approach, which learns only through changes in the received data rates of the users to reject the jamming signals and maximize the sum rate of the system. The key idea is that we decouple the discrete selection of users, channels, and modulation-coding from the continuous RIS configuration, hence facilitating the RIS configuration with the latest twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) model. Another important aspect is that we show a winner-takes-all strategy is almost surely optimal for selecting the users, channels, and modulation-coding, given a learned RIS configuration. Simulations show that the new approach converges fast to fulfill the benefit of the RIS, due to its substantially small state and action spaces. Federated learning (FL) provides an effective machine learning (ML) architecture to protect data privacy in a distributed manner. However, the inevitable network asynchrony, the over-dependence on a central coordinator, and the lack of an open and fair incentive mechanism collectively hinder its further development. We propose \textsc{IronForge}, a new generation of FL framework, that features a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG)-based data structure and eliminates the need for central coordinators to achieve fully decentralized operations. \textsc{IronForge} runs in a public and open network, and launches a fair incentive mechanism by enabling state consistency in the DAG, so that the system fits in networks where training resources are unevenly distributed. In addition, dedicated defense strategies against prevalent FL attacks on incentive fairness and data privacy are presented to ensure the security of \textsc{IronForge}. Experimental results based on a newly developed testbed FLSim highlight the superiority of \textsc{IronForge} to the existing prevalent FL frameworks under various specifications in performance, fairness, and security. To the best of our knowledge, \textsc{IronForge} is the first secure and fully decentralized FL framework that can be applied in open networks with realistic network and training settings.

Uplink sensing in perceptive mobile networks (PMNs), which uses uplink communication signals for sensing the environment around a base station, faces challenging issues of clock asynchronism and the requirement of a line-of-sight (LOS) path between transmitters and receivers. The channel state information (CSI) ratio has been applied to resolve these issues, however, current research on the CSI ratio is limited to Doppler estimation in a single dynamic path. This paper proposes an advanced parameter estimation scheme that can extract multiple dynamic parameters, including Doppler frequency, angle-of-arrival (AoA), and delay, in a communication uplink channel and completes the localization of multiple moving targets. Our scheme is based on the multi-element Taylor series of the CSI ratio that converts a nonlinear function of sensing parameters to linear forms and enables the applications of traditional sensing algorithms. Using the truncated Taylor series, we develop novel multiple-signal-classification grid searching algorithms for estimating Doppler frequencies and AoAs and use the least-square method to obtain delays. Both experimental and simulation results are provided, demonstrating that our proposed scheme can achieve good performances for sensing both single and multiple dynamic paths, without requiring the presence of a LOS path.

Web3 is leading a wave of the next generation of web services that even many Web2 applications are keen to ride. However, the lack of Web3 background for Web2 developers hinders easy and effective access and transition. On the other hand, Web3 applications desire for encouragement and advertisement from conventional Web2 companies and projects due to their low market shares. In this paper, we propose a seamless transition framework that transits Web2 to Web3, named WebttCom, after exploring the connotation of Web3 and the key differences between Web2 and Web3 applications. We also provide a full-stack implementation as a use case to support the proposed framework, followed by interviews with five participants that show four positive and one natural response. In certain Blockchain systems, multiple Blockchains are required to operate cooperatively for security, performance, and capacity considerations. This invention defines a cross-chain mechanism where a main Blockchain issues the tokens, which can then be transferred and used in multiple side Blockchains to drive their operations. A set of witnesses are created to securely manage the token exchange across the main chain and multiple side chains. The system decouples the consensus algorithms between the main chain and side chains. We investigate the tamper-resistant property of Blockchain and its effectiveness for IoT systems. In particular, we implemented an IoT testbed, and built a Blockchain into the testbed. A number of tamper-resistance experiments were conducted and analyzed to corroborate the process of block validation in Blockchain. Our analysis and experimental results demonstrate the tamper-resistant capability of Blockchain in securing trust in IoT systems. Obfuscating a dataset by adding random noises to protect the privacy of sensitive samples in the training dataset is crucial to prevent data leakage to untrusted parties for edge applications. We conduct comprehensive experiments to investigate how the dataset obfuscation can affect the resultant model weights - in terms of the model accuracy, Frobenius-norm (F-norm)-based model distance, and level of data privacy - and discuss the potential applications with the proposed Privacy, Utility, and Distinguishability (PUD)-triangle diagram to visualize the requirement preferences. Our experiments are based on the popular MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets under both independent and identically distributed (IID) and non-IID settings. Significant results include a trade-off between the model accuracy and privacy level and a trade-off between the model difference and privacy level. As distributed ledgers, blockchains run consensus protocols which trade capacity for consistency, especially in non-ideal networks with incomplete connectivity and erroneous links. Existing studies on the tradeoff between capacity and consistency are only qualitative or rely on specific assumptions. This paper presents discrete-time Markov chain models to quantify the capacity of Proof-of-Work based public blockchains in non-ideal networks. The comprehensive model is collapsed to be ergodic under the eventual consistency of blockchains, achieving tractability and efficient evaluations of blockchain capacity. A closed-form expression for the capacity is derived in the case of two miners. Another important aspect is that we extend the ergodic model to analyze the capacity under strong consistency, evaluating the robustness of blockchains against double-spending attacks. Validated by simulations, the proposed models are accurate and reveal the effect of link quality and the distribution of mining rates on blockchain capacity and the ratio of stale blocks.

Accurate channel parameter estimation is challenging for wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) large-scale hybrid arrays, due to beam squint and much fewer radio frequency (RF) chains than antennas. This paper presents a novel joint delay and angle estimation approach for wideband mmWave fully-connected hybrid uniform cylindrical arrays. We first design a new hybrid beamformer to reduce the dimension of received signals on the horizontal plane by exploiting the convergence of the Bessel function, and to reduce the active beams in the vertical direction through preselection. The important recurrence relationship of the received signals needed for subspace-based angle and delay estimation is preserved, even with substantially fewer RF chains than antennas. Then, linear interpolation is generalized to reconstruct the received signals of the hybrid beamformer, so that the signals can be coherently combined across the whole band to suppress the beam squint. As a result, efficient subspace-based algorithm algorithms can be developed to estimate the angles and delays of multipath components. The estimated delays and angles are further matched and correctly associated with different paths in the presence of non-negligible noises, by putting forth perturbation operations. Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) will change the modes of road safety and traffic management, especially at intersections without traffic lights, namely unsignalized intersections. Existing researches focus on vehicle control within a small area around an unsignalized intersection. In this paper, we expand the control domain to a large area with multiple intersections. In particular, we propose a Multi-intersection Vehicular Cooperative Control (MiVeCC) to enable cooperation among vehicles in a large area with multiple unsignalized intersections. Firstly, a vehicular end-edge-cloud computing framework is proposed to facilitate end-edge-cloud vertical cooperation and horizontal cooperation among vehicles. Then, the vehicular cooperative control problems in the cloud and edge layers are formulated as Markov Decision Process (MDP) and solved by two-stage reinforcement learning. Furthermore, to deal with high-density traffic, vehicle selection methods are proposed to reduce the state space and accelerate algorithm convergence without performance degradation. A multi-intersection simulation platform is developed to evaluate the proposed scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed MiVeCC can improve travel efficiency at multiple intersections by up to 4.59 times without collision compared with existing methods.

Channel estimation is challenging for hybrid millimeter wave (mmWave) large-scale antenna arrays which are promising in 5G/B5G applications. The challenges are associated with angular resolution losses resulting from hybrid front-ends, beam squinting, and susceptibility to the receiver noises. Based on tensor signal processing, this paper presents a novel multi-dimensional approach to channel parameter estimation with large-scale mmWave hybrid uniform circular cylindrical arrays (UCyAs) which are compact in size and immune to mutual coupling but known to suffer from infinite-dimensional array responses and intractability. We design a new resolution-preserving hybrid beamformer and a low-complexity beam squinting suppression method, and reveal the existence of shift-invariance relations in the tensor models of received array signals at the UCyA. Exploiting these relations, we propose a new tensor-based subspace estimation algorithm to suppress the receiver noises in all dimensions (time, frequency, and space). The algorithm can accurately estimate the channel parameters from both coherent and incoherent signals. Reducing cost and power consumption while maintaining high network access capability is a key physical-layer requirement of massive Internet of Things (mIoT) networks. Deploying a hybrid array is a cost- and energy-efficient way to meet the requirement, but would penalize system degree of freedom (DoF) and channel estimation accuracy. This is because signals from multiple antennas are combined by a radio frequency (RF) network of the hybrid array. This paper presents a novel hybrid uniform circular cylindrical array (UCyA) for mIoT networks. We design a nested hybrid beamforming structure based on sparse array techniques and propose the corresponding channel estimation method based on the second-order channel statistics. As a result, only a small number of RF chains are required to preserve the DoF of the UCyA. We also propose a new tensor-based two-dimensional (2-D) direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm tailored for the proposed hybrid array. The algorithm suppresses the noise components in all tensor modes and operates on the signal data model directly, hence improving estimation accuracy with an affordable computational complexity. In this paper, we study optimal waveform design to maximize mutual information (MI) for a joint communication and (radio) sensing (JCAS, a.k.a., radar-communication) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) downlink system. We consider a typical packet-based signal structure which includes training and data symbols. We first derive the conditional MI for both sensing and communication under correlated channels by considering the training overhead and channel estimation error (CEE). Then, we derive a lower bound for the channel estimation error and optimize the power allocation between the training and data symbols to minimize the CEE. Based on the optimal power allocation, we provide optimal waveform design methods for three scenarios, including maximizing MI for communication only and for sensing only, and maximizing a weighted sum MI for both communication and sensing. We also present extensive simulation results that provide insights on waveform design and validate the effectiveness of the proposed designs.

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) can cost-efficiently provide network services by running different virtual network functions (VNFs) at different virtual machines (VMs) in a correct order. This can result in strong couplings between the decisions of the VMs on the placement and operations of VNFs. This paper presents a new fully decentralized online approach for optimal placement and operations of VNFs. Building on a new stochastic dual gradient method, our approach decouples the real-time decisions of VMs, asymptotically minimizes the time-average cost of NFV, and stabilizes the backlogs of network services with a cost-backlog tradeoff of $[\epsilon,1/\epsilon]$, for any $\epsilon > 0$. Our approach can be relaxed into multiple timescales to have VNFs (re)placed at a larger timescale and hence alleviate service interruptions. While proved to preserve the asymptotic optimality, the larger timescale can slow down the optimal placement of VNFs. A learn-and-adapt strategy is further designed to speed the placement up with an improved tradeoff $[\epsilon,\log^2(\epsilon)/{\sqrt{\epsilon}}]$. Numerical results show that the proposed method is able to reduce the time-average cost of NFV by 30\% and reduce the queue length (or delay) by 83\%, as compared to existing benchmarks.

This article investigates the prominent dilemma between capacity and reliability in heterogeneous ultra-dense distributed networks, and advocates a new measure of effective capacity to quantify the maximum sustainable data rate of a link while preserving the quality-of-service (QoS) of the link in such networks. Recent breakthroughs are brought forth in developing the theory of the effective capacity in heterogeneous ultra-dense distributed networks. Potential applications of the effective capacity are demonstrated on the admission control, power control and resource allocation of such networks, with substantial gains revealed over existing technologies. This new measure is of particular interest to ultra-dense deployment of the emerging fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks in the unlicensed spectrum, leveraging the capacity gain brought by the use of the unlicensed band and the stringent reliability sustained by 5G in future heterogeneous network environments.
