This paper explores the relationship between the student-supervisor relationship (SSR) and postgraduate students' subjective well-being. Based on a longitudinal survey of Beijing college students, the present study suggests that in China, the SSR is a supervisor-centred, top-down hierarchical relationship. The reciprocity level of the SSR is positively related to the students' subjective well-being. The trust level of the SSR also has a positive relationship with students' subjective well-being; improving the trust level may also mitigate the possible negative implications of the low level of reciprocity in the relationship. The present study further reveals that it is more difficult for first-generation students to establish sound SSR than non-first-generation students. Additionally, a good SSR is more important for first-generation students' positive well-being. The findings provide implications for educational practices on how to improve postgraduate students' subjective well-being by improving the SSR.

University rankings have become increasingly popular and have penetrated higher education globally. However, it is disputable whether rankings can contribute to the quality assurance of higher education institutions. The present study examined this issue by exploring the mechanism of rankings as an external force influencing university change. It investigated the case of the Chinese Disciplinary Ranking (CDR) and found that university behaviour changed to some extent in terms of resource allocation and internal policies. Priority was placed on areas that were more important for universities to obtain higher rankings. However, the contributions of those changes to quality assurance and improvement were not very evident at either the institutional or systemic levels. The analysis determined that the consequences of the CDR were the result of the interaction between higher education institutions and external ranking schemes. Rankings have inherent limitations as an external force in contributing to quality assurance in higher education.

Neo-liberal reforms have triggered the emergence of new professionalism of teachers. This study adopts the perspective of inhabited institutionalism theory and proposes that teachers are not passively influenced by the new professionalism but that they can also respond to it differently based on their own sense-making. Using in-depth interview data from Chinese high school teachers, this study finds that two contradictory but coexisting forms of managerial professionalism strongly influence teachers: examination-oriented professionalism and quality-oriented professionalism. Meanwhile, three patterns of teachers' reactions to externally-imposed professionalism are identified: 'Why bother?', 'Struggling', and 'Meaningless'. This paper analyzes a higher education policy issued in China in 2002: "the Quality Assessment of Undergraduate Education Policy." It examines students' perceptions of the policy impacts and students' roles in the evaluation process by semi-structured interviews and questionnaire surveys. It reveals that the quality assessment in China has facilitated the improvement of teaching infrastructure and led to the intensification of school discipline in evaluated higher education institutions significantly. However, its impacts on teaching/learning are not noticeable. As an information publisher, quality assessment seems not very influential for students. Moreover, students do not think their voices have been demonstrated in the current quality assessment sufficiently, and expect their roles to be enhanced. Based on students' perceptions of the policy impacts, this study ends up with an examination of the problems with quality assessment approaches and related suggestions to improve them.

This research examined migrant children education (MCE) policies implemented in China since the late 1990s. The empirical study in Beijing demonstrated that MCE policies pushed public schools to enrol migrant children, but the policy objective of educational equality has not been fully realised. The policy implementers' capabilities and motivation did not meet expectations. The policy design and its implementing environment are also reflected upon. It was found that MCE policy objectives were legitimate and ambitious, but the policy design was vague. The central government did not provide support or pressure for policy implementation, thus the policy design was not favourable for effective implementation. Under the current political system, local governments have certain autonomy to decide the extent to which MCE policies are implemented; this is done in accordance with reciprocity between central and local government.

Globalizing forces have both transformed the higher education sector and made it increasingly homogenous. Growing similarities among universities have been attributed to isomorphic pressures to ensure and/or enhance legitimacy by imitating higher education institutions that are perceived as successful internationally, particularly universities that are highly ranked globally (Cantwell & Kauppinen, 2014; DiMaggio and Powell, 1983). In this study, we compared the strategic plans of 78 high-ranked, low-ranked, and unranked universities in 33 countries in 9 regions of the world. In analyzing the plans of these 78 universities, the study explored patterns of similarity and difference in universities' strategic positioning according to Suchman's (1995) 3 types of legitimacy: cognitive, pragmatic, and moral. We found evidence of stratified university strategies in a global higher education landscape that varied by institutional status. In offering a corrective to neoinstitutional theory, we suggest that patterns of globalization are mediated by status-based differences in aspirational behavior (Riesman, 1958) and "old institutional" forces (Stinchcombe, 1997) that contribute to differently situated universities pursuing new paths in seeking to build external legitimacy.

Doctoral student creativity is critical for technological innovation and knowledge production. Based on the extended scientific and technical human capital (STHC) theory, a moderated mediation model was constructed to explore how supportive supervision is associated with doctoral student creativity through the simultaneous mediating effects of academic buoyancy and network ties and the moderating role of family support. A sample of 637 doctoral students from China participated in this study. In particular, the findings suggest that supportive supervision is positively related to doctoral student creativity through the simultaneous indirect effects of both academic buoyancy and network ties, while the mediating effect of academic buoyancy is stronger than that of network ties. Moreover, the significant moderation effect of family support on the relationship between network ties, academic buoyancy, and creativity reveals that students with greater family support are more likely to benefit from the academic buoyancy while leading the mediating effect of network ties to be dispensable, implying that family support can be a double-edged sword. The findings provide implications for supervision that can improve doctoral student creativity by attaching importance to social capital and psychological capital while considering the nuanced influence that family support may exert. China has become a main host country for international students, but its international programmes for higher education still need improvement. This study aimed to examine the academic challenges that international postgraduates in China face based on Luc Boltanski's idea of ordinary critique. A qualitative research approach was adopted, and data were collected from 18 international students in two universities in China through semi structured interviews. The ordinary critique of academic difficulties by international postgraduates suggests that Westernized learning content is not sufficiently present in curricula, teachers do not have strong academic recognition from Western journals, the value of diplomas is questioned, and English is not regarded in local institutions as a mark of internationalization.Thus, they equate higher education internationalization with Westernization. These findings are analysed in light of common standards for the internationalization of higher education and offer possible implications for higher education internationalization in the future. This paper focuses on the education of migrant children in Beijing. As of the late 1990s, the Chinese Government has developed several policies to address educational issues among migrant children. The present study analyses data from interviews with key education personnel in Beijing to explore the outcomes of the implementation of such migrant children's education (MCE) policies and the reasons for variation from policy design. The data suggest that there is poorer equality in terms of education among migrant vs. local children than the government has reported. Migrant children are faced with numerous strict admission procedures for public schools. The Chinese Government has not prioritised educational equality, despite professing to do so. The capability and motivation of local institutions for policy implementation are less adequate than might be expected. Using Honig's model of policy implementation, this research shows that the outcomes of the MCE policies are a product of interaction between policy design, participants and implementation context.

This research analyses an external higher education quality assessment scheme in China, namely, the Quality Assessment of Undergraduate Education (QAUE) scheme. Case studies were conducted in three Chinese universities with different statuses. Analysis shows that the evaluated institutions responded to the external requirements of the QAUE actively, but the actual effects of the QAUE on university operations were not as high as expected. The empirical study of the QAUE indicates that quality assessments can trigger university change as an external force, but genuine change can only occur when it is integrated with internal motivation and capacities for change. The external and internal forces involved in the process are detailed. The analysis also shows that there is limited impetus for quality assessment as an external force driving university change. This is determined by the functional mechanism of quality assessment per se.

Shadow education helps students become academically competitive. Currently, little is known about whether shadow education can effectively fulfill either remedial or enrichment purposes in China. Using the nationally representative data from the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS) collected in 2013 and 2014, this paper explored the opportunity gap in shadow education and its impact on Chinese eighth-grade students' mathematics and English reading performance. This study further examined how this effect differs by students' prior performance and school ranks by hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). The results show that affluent socioeconomic resources and parental pressure predicted larger chances of students using shadow education. On average, supplementary tutoring had a positive effect on academic achievement. After re-estimating the effect by groups, this study found that students disadvantaged by prior knowledge and quality of schooling benefited more from supplementary tutoring. The findings suggest that the expansion of shadow education may contribute to social reproduction within the current education system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research analyzes the scheme proposed to assess the quality of higher education institutions in China, namely, the Quality Assessment of Undergraduate Education (QAUE) scheme. This article aims to determine the impact of the QAUE on universities and explore the reasons that intended effects have or have not been generated in the evaluated universities by conducting case studies of three Chinese universities with different statuses. The empirical studies show the effects on the various dimensions of quality provisions at different universities were not the same. It was found that the impact of the QAUE was not a linear consequence of policy implementation, but the result of an interaction between the external quality assessment scheme and the evaluated universities. Quality assessment is regarded to be an external force to cause universities to change. This empirical study of the QAUE shows that changes will only take place when the external force is integrated with the evaluated universities' internal motivation and capacity.

This paper analyses a higher education policy issued in China in 2002: the Quality Assessment of Undergraduate Education Policy. The policy was designed with four main objectives: improvement, compliance, information and accountability. However, it has not completely fulfilled its objectives, especially regarding improvement and accountability, and it has had some unexpected consequences. Reflections on the quality assessment policy show that both inevitable and contingent factors have led to low efficiency. The authors identify the main reasons for this and propose ways to improve the policy based on the principles of the incremental and rational models of policy making and reform.
