The supernova remnant (SNR) G150.3+4.5 was first identified in radio, exhibiting a hard GeV spectrum and a $\sim 1.5^\circ$ radius. Radio observations revealed a bright arc with an index of $\sim -0.40$, which stands in contrast to the index of $\sim -0.69$ for the rest. This arc is coincident with the point-like \emph{Fermi} source 4FGL J0426.5+5434 and KM2A source 1LHAASO J0428+5531. The rest of the SNR has a hard GeV spectrum and a soft TeV spectrum, implying a spectral cut-off or break near 1 TeV. Since there is no X-ray counterpart and no pulse signal detected, the gamma-ray $(\gamma$-ray) emission mechanism from the SNR and the point-like source appear puzzling. In this work, we reanalyse the $\gamma$-ray emission using 14 yr data recorded by \emph{Fermi} Large Area Telescope and find that the spectrum of the northern half-sphere is compatible with a broken power law with a break at 146 $\pm$ 11 GeV and photon indices of $\Gamma_{\rm{Northlobe}}$ =$1.54\pm0.04_{\rm{stat}}\pm0.07_{\rm{syst}}$ ($2.28\pm0.08_{\rm{stat}}\pm0.12_{\rm{syst}}$) below (above) the break. In addition, the southern half-sphere can be described well with a single power law with $\Gamma_{\rm{Southlobe}}$ =$1.95\pm0.07_{\rm{stat}}\pm0.09_{\rm{syst}}$. Since the southern half-sphere is well correlated with CO emission, we propose that the $\gamma$-ray emission of the northern half-sphere could be dominated by relativistic electrons via inverse-Compton processes, while the southern half-sphere is dominated by cosmic rays via hadronic processes. 4FGL J0426.5+5434 may result from the illumination of a cloud by escaping cosmic rays or recent shock-cloud interaction. Observations from LHAASO-KM2A thus favour the possibility of a cosmic-ray PeVatron candidate, however, leptonic scenarios cannot be ruled out. Within the classical convection--diffusion approximation, we show that the angular distribution of cosmic rays (CRs) in a highly turbulent flow may exhibit significant small-scale anisotropies. The CR intensity angular power spectrum $ C_\ell $ is then a direct reflection of interstellar turbulence, from which one expects $ C_\ell\propto\ell^{-\gamma -1} $ for $ \ell\gg 1 $, where $ \gamma $ is the power-law turbulence spectral index. Observations by IceCube and HAWC at TeV energies can be explained approximately with the Kolmogorov law $ \gamma =5/3 $ with a convection velocity dispersion of 20 km/s on the scale of 10 pc., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) algorithms are widely adopted in tackling complex tasks that require collaboration and competition among agents in dynamic Multi-Agent Systems (MAS). However, learning such tasks from scratch is arduous and may not always be feasible, particularly for MASs with a large number of interactive agents due to the extensive sample complexity. Therefore, reusing knowledge gained from past experiences or other agents could efficiently accelerate the learning process and upscale MARL algorithms. In this study, we introduce a novel framework that enables transfer learning for MARL through unifying various state spaces into fixed-size inputs that allow one unified deep-learning policy viable in different scenarios within a MAS. We evaluated our approach in a range of scenarios within the StarCraft Multi-Agent Challenge (SMAC) environment, and the findings show significant enhancements in multi-agent learning performance using maneuvering skills learned from other scenarios compared to agents learning from scratch. Furthermore, we adopted Curriculum Transfer Learning (CTL), enabling our deep learning policy to progressively acquire knowledge and skills across pre-designed homogeneous learning scenarios organized by difficulty levels. Distributed decision-making in multi-agent systems presents difficult challenges for interactive behavior learning in both cooperative and competitive systems. To mitigate this complexity, MAIDRL presents a semi-centralized Dense Reinforcement Learning algorithm enhanced by agent influence maps (AIMs), for learning effective multi-agent control on StarCraft Multi-Agent Challenge (SMAC) scenarios. In this paper, we extend the DenseNet in MAIDRL and introduce semi-centralized Multi-Agent Dense-CNN Reinforcement Learning, MAIDCRL, by incorporating convolutional layers into the deep model architecture, and evaluate the performance on both homogeneous and heterogeneous scenarios. The results show that the CNN-enabled MAIDCRL significantly improved the learning performance and achieved a faster learning rate compared to the existing MAIDRL, especially on more complicated heterogeneous SMAC scenarios. We further investigate the stability and robustness of our model. The orbital energy and momentum of the compact binary systems will loss due to gravitational radiation. Based on the mass and mass-current multipole moments of the binary system with the spin vector defined by Boh\'{e} et al. [Class. Quantum Grav. 30, 075017 (2013)], we calculate the loss rates of energy, angular and linear momentum induced by the next-to-leading spin-orbit effects. Nonintegrable dynamical systems have complex structures in their phase space. Motion of a test charged particle in a dipole magnetic field can be reduced to a 2 degree-of-freedom (2 d.o.f.) nonintegrable Hamiltonian system. We carried out a systematic study of orbits of charged particles with an azimuthal initial velocity in a dipole field via calculation of their Lyapunov characteristic exponents (LCEs) and escape times for a dimensionless energy less and greater than 1/32, respectively. Meridian plane periodic orbits symmetric with respect to the equatorial plane are then identified. We found that 1) symmetric periodic orbits can be classified into several classes based on their number of crossing points on the equatorial plane; 2) the initial conditions of these classes locate on closed loops or closed curves going through the origin; 3) most isolated regions of stable quasi-periodic orbits are associated asymmetric stable periodic orbits; 4) classes of asymmetric periodic orbits either go through the origin or terminate at flat equatorial plane orbits with the other end approaching centers of spiral structures; 5) there are apparent self-similarities in the above features with the decrease of energy.

HESS J1356-645 is considered to be a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) associated with the pulsar PSR J1357-6429. We reanalyze the GeV gamma-ray emission in the direction of HESS J1356-645 with more than 13 years of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) data. The extended gamma-ray emission above 5 GeV is found to be spatially coincident with HESS J1356-645. The spectrum in the energy range of 1 GeV-1 TeV can be described by a power law with an index of $\Gamma=1.51\pm0.10$. The broadband spectrum of HESS J1356-645 can be reproduced by a leptonic model with a broken power-law electronic spectrum. In addition, we found evidence that the morphology of the GeV emission from HESS J1356-645 varies with energy, a behavior which is similar to that of the PWN Vela-X. How ions are energized and heated is a fundamental problem in the study of energy dissipation in magnetized plasmas. In particular, the heating of heavy ions (including ${}^{4}\mathrm{He}^{2+}$, ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}^{2+}$ and others) has been a constant concern for understanding the microphysics of impulsive solar flares. In this article, via two-dimensional hybrid-kinetic Particle-in-Cell simulations, we study the heating of Helium ions (${}^{4}\mathrm{He}^{2+}$) by turbulence driven by cascading waves launched at large scales from the left-handed polarized Helium ion cyclotron wave branch of a multi-ion plasma composed of electrons, protons, and Helium ions. We find significant parallel (to the background magnetic field) heating for both Helium ions and protons due to the formation of beams and plateaus in their velocity distribution functions along the background magnetic field. The heating of Helium ions in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field starts with a lower rate than that in the parallel direction, but overtakes the parallel heating after a few hundreds of the proton gyro-periods due to cyclotron resonances with mainly obliquely propagating waves induced by the cascade of injected Helium ion cyclotron waves at large scales. There is however little evidence for proton heating in the perpendicular direction due to the absence of left-handed polarized cyclotron waves near the proton cyclotron frequency. Our results are useful for understanding the preferential heating of ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ and other heavy ions in the ${}^{3}\mathrm{He}$-rich solar energetic particle events, in which Helium ions play a crucial role as a species of background ions regulating the kinetic plasma behavior., Comment: accepted by ApJ

Under nonuniform convection, the distribution of diffusive particles can exhibit dipole and quadrupole anisotropy induced by the fluid inertial and shear force, respectively. These convection-related anisotropies, unlike the Compton-Getting effect, typically increase with the cosmic-ray (CR) energy, and are thus candidate contributors for the CR anisotropy. In consideration of the inertial effect, CR observational data can be used to set an upper limit on the average acceleration of the local interstellar medium in the equatorial plane to be on the order of 100 $ \mu \text{m}/\text{s}^2 $. Using Oort constants, the quadrupole anisotropy above 200 TeV may be modeled with the shear effect arising from the Galactic differential rotation., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

Using a three-component, multi-scale diffusion model, we show that the cosmic-ray (CR) proton and helium spectra and the dipole anisotropy can be explained with reasonable parameters. The model includes a nearby source associated with the supernova remnant (SNR) that gave rise to the Geminga pulsar, a source at the Galactic center, and a component associated with the Galactic disk. The CR flux below TeV is dominated by the disk component. The center source with a continuous injection of CRs starting about 18 Myr ago is needed to explain the anisotropy above 100 TeV. With the assumption of universal CR spectra injected by all SNRs, the nearby source can produce a TeV spectral bump observed at Earth via slow diffusion across the interstellar magnetic field, which needs to have an angle $ \theta \approx 5^{\circ} $ between the field line and the line of sight toward the source, and have weak magnetic turbulence with the Alfv\'{e}n Mach number $ M_{\text{A}}\approx 0.1 $. Considering the modulation of the Galactic-scale anisotropy by this magnetic field, in a quasi-local approach the field may be directed at a right ascension about $ -90^{\circ} $ and a declination about $ -7.4^{\circ} $ in the equatorial coordinate system., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental physical process converting magnetic energy into not only plasma energy but also particle energy in various astrophysical phenomena. In this letter, we show a unique dataset of a solar flare where various plasmoids were formed by a continually stretched current sheet. EUV images captured reconnection inflows, outflows, and particularly the recurring plasma blobs (plasmoids). X-ray images reveal nonthermal emission sources at the lower end of the current sheet, presumably as large plasmoids with a sufficiently amount of energetic electrons trapped in. In the radio domain, an upward slowly drifting pulsation structure, followed by a rare pair of oppositely drifting structures, was observed. These structures are supposed to map the evolution of the primary and the secondary plasmoids formed in the current sheet. Our results on plasmoids at different locations and scales shed important light on the dynamics, plasma heating, particle acceleration, and transport processes in the turbulent current sheet and provide observational evidence for the cascading magnetic reconnection process., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2 appendix

Magnetic reconnection in solar flares can efficiently generate non-thermal electron beams. The energetic electrons can, in turn, cause radio waves through microscopic plasma instabilities as they propagate through the ambient plasma along the magnetic field lines. We aim at investigating the wave emission caused by fast moving electron beams (FEBs) with characteristic non-thermal electron velocity distribution functions (EVDFs) generated by kinetic magnetic reconnection: two-streaming EVDFs along the separatrices and in the diffusion region, and perpendicular crescent-shaped EVDFs closer to the diffusion region. For this purpose, we utilized 2.5D fully kinetic Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code simulations in this study. We found that:(1) the two-streaming EVDFs plus the background ions are unstable to electron/ion (streaming) instabilities which cause ion acoustic waves and Langmuir waves due to the net current. This can lead to multiple harmonic plasma emission in the diffusion region and the separatrices of reconnection. (2) The perpendicular crescent-shaped EVDFs can cause multiple harmonic electromagnetic electron cyclotron waves through the electron cyclotron maser instabilities in the diffusion region of reconnection. Our results are applicable to diagnose the plasma parameters which control magnetic reconnection in solar flares by means of radio waves observations., Comment: 12 figures, 3 tables. Supernova remnant RX J1713.7-3946 (also named as G347.3-0.5) has exhibited largest surface brightness, detailed spectral and shell-type morphology, it is one of the brightest TeV sources. The recent H.E.S.S. observation of RX J1713.7-3946 revealed \textbf{a} broken power-law spectrum of GeV-TeV gamma-ray spectrum and more extended gamma-ray spatial radial profile than that in the X-ray band. Based on the diffusion shock acceleration model, we solve spherically symmetric hydrodynamic equations and transport equations of particles, and investigate multi-band non-thermal emission of RX J1713.7-3946 and radial profiles of its surface brightness for two selected zones in the leptonic scenario for the $\gamma$-ray emission. We found (1) the diffusion coefficient has a weak energy-dependent, and the Kolmogorov type is favored; (2) the magnetic field strength could vary linearly or nonlinearly with radius for different surrounding environments because of possible turbulence in shock downstream region, and a compressional amplification is likely to exist at the shock front; (3) the non-thermal photons from radio to X-ray bands are dominated by synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons, if the GeV-TeV gamma-rays are produced by inverse Compton scattering from these electrons interacting with the background photons, then the X-ray and gamma-ray radial profiles can be reproduced except for the more extended $\gamma$-ray emission., Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures

As the standard gamma-ray burst (GRB) prompt-emission model, the internal shock (IS) model can reproduce the fast-rise and slow-decay features of the pulses in the GRB light curve. The time- and energy-dependent polarization can deliver important physical information on the emission region and can be used to test models. Polarization predictions for the GRB prompt phase with the magnetized IS model should be investigated carefully. The magnetic field of the magnetized IS model is very likely to be mixed and decays with radius. The synchrotron emission in the presence of such a decaying magnetic field can recover the Band-like spectrum of the GRB prompt phase. We investigate the dependence of the polarization of GRB prompt emission on both time and energy in the framework of the magnetized IS model. Due to the large range of parameters, it is hard to distinguish the magnetized IS model and the magnetic-reconnection model through polarization degree (PD) curves. The energy-dependent PD could increase toward the high-energy band for the magnetized IS model, while it decreases to zero above the megaelectronvolt band for the dissipative photosphere model. Therefore, we conclude that the energy dependence of PD can be used to distinguish these two models for the GRB prompt emission. Finally, we find that, independent of the observational energy band, the profiles of the $\xi_B-PD$ curve for the time-integrated and time-resolved PDs are very similar, where $\xi_B$ is the magnetic field strength ratio of the ordered component to the random component., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ApJ

The emission mechanism for hard $\gamma$-ray spectra from supernova remnants (SNRs) is still a matter of debate. Recent multi-wavelength observations of TeV source HESS J1912+101 show that it is associated with an SNR with an age of $\sim 100$ kyrs, making it unlikely produce the TeV $\gamma$-ray emission via leptonic processes. We analyzed Fermi observations of it and found an extended source with a hard spectrum. HESS J1912+101 may represent a peculiar stage of SNR evolution that dominates the acceleration of TeV cosmic rays. By fitting the multi-wavelength spectra of 13 SNRs with hard GeV $\gamma$-ray spectra with simple emission models with a density ratio of GeV electrons to protons of $\sim 10^{-2}$, we obtain reasonable mean densities and magnetic fields with a total energy of $\sim 10^{50}$ ergs for relativistic ions in each SNR. Among these sources, only two of them, namely SN 1006 and RCW 86, favor a leptonic origin for the $\gamma$-ray emission. The magnetic field energy is found to be comparable to that of the accelerated relativistic ions and their ratio has a tendency of increase with the age of SNRs. The detection of almost 100% linearly polarized emission from the fast radio burst source FRB 121102 implies coherent emission of relativistic electrons moving in perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field. The origin of such a particle distribution is very intriguing. Given that FRB 121102 is likely driven by a neutron star, we explored orbits of charged particles trapped in a dipole magnetic field (the St\"ormer problem). Most previous studies focused on particles with relatively low energies so that the guiding center approximation may be applied. High energy particles usually have chaotic orbits except those on a periodic orbit or near stable periodic orbits. Via evaluation of the maximum Lyapunov exponent of orbits of particles launched from the equatorial plane with an axial velocity (the angular velocity sets the length and energy scales of the system), we found prominent regions of quasi-periodic orbits around stable periodic orbits in the equatorial plane at high-energies. Particles in these orbits oscillate around the equatorial plane and their radial distance from the dipole can vary by a factor of/,2. Relativistic electrons in such orbits may be responsible for the almost 100% polarized emission from FRB 121102.

Via evaluation of the Lyapunov exponent, we report the discovery of three prominent sets of phase space regimes of quasi-periodic orbits of charged particles trapped in a dipole magnetic field. Besides the low energy regime that has been studied extensively and covers more than 10% in each dimension of the phase space of trapped orbits, there are two sets of high energy regimes, the largest of which covers more than 4% in each dimension of the phase space of trapped orbits. Particles in these high energy orbits may be observed in space and be realized in plasma experiments on the Earth. It is well-known that there are quasi-periodic orbits around stable periodic orbits in Hamiltonian systems with 2 degrees of freedom and these quasi-periodic orbits are stable as well. Since periodic orbits appear to have a negligible measure in the phase space, they are difficult to realize in nature. Quasi-periodic orbits, on the other hand, may occupy a finite volume in the 4 dimensional (4D) phase space and be readily detectable. A chaotic orbit has at least one positive Lyapunov exponent. The Lyapunov exponents of quasi-periodic orbits, on the other hand, should be zero. Via calculation of the Lyapunov exponent of orbits of trapped charged particles in a dipole magnetic field, we scanned the corresponding phase space and found several prominent regimes of quasi-periodic orbits associated with stable periodic orbits in the equatorial plane. These regimes appear to be connected to some small regimes of quasi-periodic orbits associated with stable periodic orbits in the Meridian plane. Our numerical results also show a continuous spectrum of these orbits from stable periodic, to quasi-periodic with vanishing Lyapunov exponents, and eventually to chaotic ones with at least one positive Lyapunov exponent and there are unstable periodic orbits with a positive maximum Lyapunov exponent.

DAMPE observation on the cosmic ray electron spectrum hints a narrow excess at $\sim$ 1.4 TeV. Although the excess can be ascribed to dark matter particles, pulsars and pulsar wind nebulae are believed to be a more natural astrophysical origin: electrons injected from nearby pulsars at their early ages can form a bump-like feature in the spectrum due to radiative energy losses. In this paper, with a survey of nearby pulsars, we find 4 pulsars that may have notable contributions to $\sim$ 1.4 TeV cosmic ray electrons. Among them, PSR J0855$-$4644 has a spin down luminosity more than 50 times higher than others and presumably dominates the electron fluxes from them. X-ray observations on the inner compact part (which may represent a tunnel for the transport of electrons from the pulsar) of PWN G267.0$-$01.0 are then used to constrain the spectral index of high energy electrons injected by the pulsar. We show that high-energy electrons released by PSR J0855$-$4644 could indeed reproduce the 1.4 TeV spectral feature hinted by the DAMPE with reasonable parameters., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Recent observations of VER J2227+608 reveal a broken power $\gamma$-ray spectrum with the spectral index increasing from $\sim 1.8$ in the GeV energy range to $\sim 2.3$ in the TeV range. Such a spectral break can be attributed to radiative energy loss of energetic electrons in the leptonic scenario for the $\gamma$-ray emission, which, in combination with characteristic age of the nearby pulsar, can be used to constrain magnetic field in the emission region. We show that the radio and X-ray observations can also be explained in such a scenario. In the hadronic scenario, the spectral break can be attributed to diffusion of energetic ions in a turbulent medium and detailed spectral measurement can be used to constrain the diffusion coefficient. Type III radio bursts are radio emissions associated with solar flares. They are considered to be caused by electron beams traveling from the solar corona to the solar wind. Magnetic reconnection is a possible accelerator of electron beams in the course of solar flares since it causes unstable distribution functions, and density inhomogeneities (cavities). The properties of radio emission by electron beams in an inhomogeneous environment are still poorly understood. We capture the non-linear kinetic plasma processes of generation of beam-related radio emissions in inhomogeneous plasmas by utilizing fully-kinetic Particle-In-Cell (PIC) code numerical simulations. Our model takes into account initial electron velocity distribution functions (EVDFs) as they are supposed to be created by magnetic reconnection. We focus our analysis on low-density regions with strong magnetic fields. The assumed EVDFs allow two distinct mechanisms of radio wave emissions: plasma emissions due to wave-wave interactions and so-called electron cyclotron maser emissions (ECME) due to direct wave-particle interactions. We investigate the effects of density inhomogeneities on the conversion of free energy from the electron beams into the energy of electrostatic and electromagnetic waves via plasma emission and ECME, as well as the frequency shift of electron resonances caused by perpendicular gradients in the beam EVDFs. Our most important finding is that the number of harmonics of Langmuir waves increases due to the presence of density inhomogeneities. Hybrid free space optical (FSO)/radio frequency (RF) systems have been proved to be reliable links for high-data-rate wireless backhauls. In this paper, we present a unified performance analysis of the hybrid FSO/RF transmission system which transmits the identical data in both links and implements two popular diversity combining schemes, namely, selection combining (SC) and maximal ratio combining (MRC), in the receiver. Specially, for the FSO link, the Gamma-Gamma turbulence with pointing errors under heterodyne detection (HD) and intensity modulation/direction detection (IM/DD) is considered in our analysis while the general \k{appa}-{\mu} shadowed fading which unifies popular RF fading models is employed for the analysis of the RF link. As a result, unified closed-form expressions of outage probabilities and average bit error rates for different modulation schemes are derived. Analytical and Monte Carlo simulation results are provided to characterize the performance of the hybrid FSO/RF link which is compared to the single FSO link and the single RF link. The agreement between the analytical and simulation results confirms the unification of various FSO channels and RF fading scenarios into a single closed-form expression.

Crowd scene analysis receives growing attention due to its wide applications. Grasping the accurate crowd location (rather than merely crowd count) is important for spatially identifying high-risk regions in congested scenes. In this paper, we propose a Compressed Sensing based Output Encoding (CSOE) scheme, which casts detecting pixel coordinates of small objects into a task of signal regression in encoding signal space. CSOE helps to boost localization performance in circumstances where targets are highly crowded without huge scale variation. In addition, proper receptive field sizes are crucial for crowd analysis due to human size variations. We create Multiple Dilated Convolution Branches (MDCB) that offers a set of different receptive field sizes, to improve localization accuracy when objects sizes change drastically in an image. Also, we develop an Adaptive Receptive Field Weighting (ARFW) module, which further deals with scale variation issue by adaptively emphasizing informative channels that have proper receptive field size. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, which achieves state-of-the-art performance across four mainstream datasets, especially achieves excellent results in highly crowded scenes. More importantly, experiments support our insights that it is crucial to tackle target size variation issue in crowd analysis task, and casting crowd localization as regression in encoding signal space is quite effective for crowd analysis.

We propose a self-similar (SS) solution to hydrodynamic non-relativistic flow behind a spherical strong blast wave (BW) passing through a homogeneous plasma with efficient relativistic particle acceleration at the shock front. The flow is described by an ideal two-fluid model with a relativistic component so that the post-shock gas has an effective SS adiabatic index $ \gamma $ varying from $ 5/3 $ to $ 4/3 $. This solution is calculated numerically and compared with the standard Sedov solution. We find that the BW center in our solution is dominated by the relativistic component with $ \gamma =4/3 $ for the divergence of expansion there, and the relativistic component dominates the interior for a moderate acceleration efficiency at the shock front. The overall efficiency of relativistic particle acceleration can be enhanced by a factor of $ 2 $ due to the slower adiabatic energy loss rate of the relativistic component during expansion. The spectra fits to a sample of 34 supernova remnants (Zeng et al., 2019) are updated. $\gamma$-ray spectra of 20 supernova remnants (SNRs) with a soft TeV spectrum are further analyzed. We found that 17 of them can be fitted in the hadronic scenario with a single power-law ion distribution with an index of $\sim$ 2.6, which is significantly softer than the ion distribution inferred from $\gamma$-ray observations of star-burst galaxies. Observations by HAWC and Milagro have detected spatially extended TeV sources surrounding middle-aged ($t\sim100-400 \,{\rm kyr}$) pulsars like Geminga and PSR B0656+14, which have been named "TeV Halos", representing very extended TeV pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) powered by relatively old pulsars. A few more HAWC-detected sources have been suggested to be TeV halo candidates. In this paper, we search for possible GeV counterparts of three TeV halo candidates with Fermi Large Area Telescopes. We detect a new spatially extended GeV source in the vicinity of the TeV halo candidate 2HWC J1912+099, which is also detected by HESS (HESS J1912+101). We find that the size of the GeV source is significantly larger than that of the TeV emission measured by HESS, and a spatial template characteristic of a PWN can fit the GeV data. We suggest that the GeV source is an extended PWN powered by the central middle-aged pulsar PSR J1913+1011. This discovery favors the TeV halo scenario for the TeV source 2HWC J1912+099 (HESS J1912+101), although the possible shell-like morphology measured by HESS challenges this interpretation. Alternatively, the TeV emission could be dominated by a supernova remnant (SNR) via the hadronic process. Future multi-wavelength observations of the source and more precise measurements of the spatial profile of the TeV emission will be useful to distinguish between the two scenarios., Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 7 pages, 6 figures

We report the detection of GeV $\gamma$-ray emission from the very-high-energy (VHE) $\gamma$-ray source VER J2227+608 associated with the "tail" region of SNR G106.3+2.7. The GeV $\gamma$-ray emission is extended and spatially coincident with molecular clouds traced by CO emission. The broadband GeV to TeV emission of VER J2227+608 can be well fitted by a single power-law function with an index of 1.90$\pm$0.04, without obvious indication of spectral cutoff toward high energies. The pure leptonic model for the $\gamma$-ray emission can be marginally ruled out by the X-ray and TeV data. In the hadronic model, the low energy content of CRs and the hard $\gamma$-ray spectrum, in combination with the center-bright source structure, suggest that VER J2227+608 may be powered by the PWN instead of shocks of the SNR. And the cutoff energy of the proton distribution needs to be higher than $\sim$ 400 TeV, which makes it an attractive PeVatron candidate. Future observations by the upcoming Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) and the Cherenkov Telescope Array in the north (CTA-North) could distinguish these models and constrain the maximum energy of cosmic rays in supernova remnants., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

High-energy particle transport in pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) plays an essential role in explaining the characteristics revealed in multiwavelength observations. In this paper, the TeV-gamma-ray-emitting electrons in the Vela X PWN are approximated to be injected impulsively when the cocoon is formed due to the interaction between the SNR reverse shock and the PWN. By solving the diffusion-loss equation analytically, we reproduce the broadband spectral energy distribution and surface brightness profile simultaneously. The diffusion coefficient of TeV electrons and positrons, which is well constrained by the spectral and spatial properties of the TeV nebula, is thus determined to be $1 \times 10^{26}$\,cm$^{2}$\,s$^{-1}$ for 10\,TeV electrons and positrons. This coefficient is more than three orders of magnitude lower than that in the interstellar medium, in agreement with a constraint recently obtained from HAWC observations of a TeV nebula associated with the Geminga pulsar. Since the science white paper of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) published on arXiv in 2019 [e-Print: 1905.02773 (astro-ph.HE)], LHAASO has completed the transition from a project to an operational gamma-ray astronomical observatory LHAASO is a new generation multi-component facility located in Daocheng, Sichuan province of China, at an altitude of 4410 meters. It aims at measuring with unprecedented sensitivity the spectrum, composition, and anisotropy of cosmic rays in the energy range between 10$^{12}$ and 10$^{18}$~eV, and acting simultaneously as a wide aperture (one stereoradiant) continuously operating gamma-ray telescope in the energy range between 10$^{11}$ and $10^{15}$~eV with the designed sensitivity of 1.3\% of the Crab Unit (CU) above 100 TeV. LHAASO's capability of measuring simultaneously different shower components (electrons, muons, and Cherenkov/fluorescence light), will allow it to investigate the origin, acceleration, and propagation of CR through measurement of the energy spectrum, elemental composition, and anisotropy with unprecedented resolution. The remarkable sensitivity of LHAASO will play a key role in CR physics and gamma-ray astronomy for a general and comprehensive exploration of the high energy universe and will allow important studies of fundamental physics (such as indirect dark matter search, Lorentz invariance violation, quantum gravity) and solar and heliospheric physics. Over the past decade, $\gamma$-ray observations of supernova remnants (SNRs) and accurate cosmic-ray (CR) spectral measurements have significantly advanced our understanding of particle acceleration in SNRs. In combination with multiwavelength observations of a large sample of SNRs, it has been proposed that the highest energy particles are mostly accelerated in young remnants, and the maximum energy that middle-age and old SNRs can accelerate particles to decreases rapidly with the decrease in shock speed. If SNRs dominate the CR flux observed at Earth, a large number of particles need to be accelerated in old SNRs for the soft CR spectrum even though they cannot produce very high-energy CRs. With radio, X-ray, and $\gamma$-ray observations of seven middle-age shell-type SNRs, we derive the distribution of high-energy electrons trapped in these remnants via a simple one-zone leptonic emission model and find that their spectral evolution is consistent with such a scenario. In particular, we find that particle acceleration by shocks in middle-age SNRs with an age of $t$ can be described by a unified model with the maximum energy decreasing as $t^{-3.1}$ and the number of GeV electrons increasing as $t^{2.5}$ in the absence of escape from SNRs., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication for ApJ

Cassiopeia A, a well-observed young core-collapse supernova remnant (SNR), is considered as one of the best candidates for studying very high-energy particle acceleration up to PeV via the diffusive shock mechanism. Recently, MAGIC observations revealed a $\gamma$-ray spectral cutoff at $\sim3.5$ TeV, suggesting that if the TeV $\gamma$-rays have a hadronic origin, SNR Cas A can only accelerate particles to tens of TeV. Here, we propose a two-zone emission model for regions associated with the forward (zone 1) and inward/reverse shocks (zone 2). Given the low density in zone 1, it dominates the high-frequency radio emission, soft X-ray rim via the synchrotron process and TeV $\gamma$-ray via the inverse Comptonization. With a relatively softer particle distribution and a higher cut-off energy for electrons, emissions from zone 2 dominate the low-frequency radio, hard X-ray via the synchrotron process and GeV $\gamma$-ray via hadronic processes. There is no evidence for high-energy cutoffs in the proton distributions implying that Cas A can still be a PeVatron. Hadronic processes from zone 1 dominate very high-energy gamma-ray emission. Estimating the cosmic-ray acceleration efficiency $ \epsilon $ in supernova remnants (SNRs) through observations is a challenging task in general. Based on the Rankine-Hugoniot shock conditions, we find an anticorrelation between $ \epsilon $ and the power-law spectral index $ \alpha $ of relativistic particle distribution produced via diffusive particle acceleration by nonrelativistic shocks, implying more efficient acceleration in older SNRs with harder radio spectra. Then $ \epsilon $ may be estimated from some hard radio spectral index measurements. Assuming the particle distribution in downstream of strong shocks to be a nonrelativistic Maxwellian plus a relativistic power law with a high-energy cutoff, we also find that the injection rate for relativistic particles $ \eta $ needs to $ \gtrsim 10^{-6} $ for a prominent decrease of the adiabatic index in SNRs, which implies higher compression ratio and lower values of $ \alpha $. This threshold of $ \eta $ increases with the shock speed $ u_1 $, which may explain the relatively harder radio spectra of older SNRs with lower $ u_1 $. We show that $ \eta $ and/or the relativistic cutoff momentum $ p_\text{m} $ need to be low for old SNRs, and expect a gradual increase of $ \epsilon $ as SNR evolves with gradually decreasing $ \eta $ and $ p_\text{m} $., Comment: Published in MNRAS

Supernova remnants (SNRs) have been considered as the dominant contributors to Galactic cosmic rays. However, the relation between high-energy particles trapped in SNRs and cosmic rays observed at the Earth remains obscure. In this paper, we fit the spectral energy distributions of 35 SNRs with a simple one-zone emission model and analyze correlations of model parameters to uncover the evolution of high-energy particle distribution in SNRs. We find that (1) the particle distribution in general can be described by a broken power-law function with a high-energy cutoff for all SNRs; (2) the low-energy spectrum becomes harder and the break energy decreases with aging of SNRs, (3) for most middle-age SNRs, the energy loss timescale of electrons at the high-energy cutoff is approximately equal to the age of the corresponding remnant implying quenching of very high-energy electron acceleration; for young SNRs, this energy loss timescale is shorter than the age of SNRs implying continuous electon acceleration at the cutoff energy; and for a few old age SNRs, the energy loss timescale is longer than the corresponding age which may suggest escaping of higher energy particles from SNRs. We have investigated the linear X-ray filament, G359.944-0.052, previously identified as a likely X-ray counterpart of a parsec-scale jet from the Galactic Center super-massive black hole (SMBH), Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), using a total of ~5.6 Ms ultra-deep Chandra observations taken from September 1999 to July 2017. This unprecedented dataset enables us to examine flux and spectral variations that might be related to intrinsic properties of the weakly accreting SMBH. We find no flux or spectral variation in G359.944-0.052 after the G2 periapsis passage around early 2014, however, a moderate flux increase of ~2 sigma significance might be associated with the periapsis passage of G1 in early 2001. The filament exhibits an unusually hard spectrum (photon-index < 1) in its portion closest to Sgr A* (i.e., near-side) and a significant spectral softening in the more distant portion, which can be interpreted as synchrotron cooling of the relativistic electrons moving along the jet path. In particular, the hard spectrum of the near-side suggests a piling up of quasi-monoenergetic electrons caused by rapid radiative cooling. The spectral and temporal properties of G359.944-0.052 strengthen the case of it being the X-ray counterpart of a jet launched by Sgr A*., Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures, accepted by ApJ
