We address the controversy over the proximity effect between topological materials and high T$_{c}$ superconductors. Junctions are produced between Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ and materials with different Fermi surfaces (Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ \& graphite). Both cases reveal tunneling spectra consistent with Andreev reflection. This is confirmed by magnetic field that shifts features via the Doppler effect. This is modeled with a single parameter that accounts for tunneling into a screening supercurrent. Thus the tunneling involves Cooper pairs crossing the heterostructure, showing the Fermi surface mis-match does not hinder the ability to form transparent interfaces, which is accounted for by the extended Brillouin zone and different lattice symmetries.

Recently there has been reinvigorated interest in the superconducting proximity effect, driven by predictions of the emergence of Majorana fermions. To help guide this search, we have developed a phenomenological model for the tunneling spectra in anisotropic superconductor-normal metal proximity devices. We combine successful approaches used in s-wave proximity and standard d-wave tunneling to reproduce tunneling spectra in d-wave proximity devices, and clarify the origin of various features. Different variations of the pair potential are considered, resulting from the proximity-induced superconductivity. Furthermore, the effective pair potential felt by the quasiparticles is momentum-dependent in contrast to s-wave superconductors. The probabilities of reflection and transmission are calculated by solving the Bogoliubov equations. Our results are consistent with experimental observations of the unconventional proximity effect and provide important experimental parameters such as the size and length scale of the proximity induced gap, as well as the conditions needed to observe the reduced and full superconducting gaps., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

High-temperature superconductors exhibit a wide variety of novel excitations. If contacted with a topological insulator, the lifting of spin rotation symmetry in the surface states can lead to the emergence of unconventional superconductivity and novel particles. In pursuit of this possibility, we fabricated high critical-temperature (Tc ~ 85 K) superconductor/topological insulator (Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta/Bi2Te2Se) junctions. Below 75 K, a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) emerges in the differential conductance spectra of this junction. The magnitude of the ZBCP is suppressed at the same rate for magnetic fields applied parallel or perpendicular to the junction. Furthermore, it can still be observed and does not split up to at least 8.5 T. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the excitation we observe appears to fall outside the known paradigms for a ZBCP.

To achieve and utilize the most exotic electronic phenomena predicted for the surface states of 3D topological insulators (TI),it is necessary to open a "Dirac-mass gap" in their spectrum by breaking time-reversal symmetry. Use of magnetic dopant atoms to generate a ferromagnetic state is the most widely used approach. But it is unknown how the spatial arrangements of the magnetic dopant atoms influence the Dirac-mass gap at the atomic scale or, conversely, whether the ferromagnetic interactions between dopant atoms are influenced by the topological surface states. Here we image the locations of the magnetic (Cr) dopant atoms in the ferromagnetic TI Cr$_{0.08}$(Bi$_{0.1}$Sb$_{0.9}$)$_{1.92}$Te$_3$. Simultaneous visualization of the Dirac-mass gap $\Delta(r)$ reveals its intense disorder, which we demonstrate directly is related to fluctuations in $n(r)$, the Cr atom areal density in the termination layer. We find the relationship of surface-state Fermi wavevectors to the anisotropic structure of $\Delta(r)$ consistent with predictions for surface ferromagnetism mediated by those states. Moreover, despite the intense Dirac-mass disorder, the anticipated relationship $\Delta(r)\propto n(r)$ is confirmed throughout, and exhibits an electron-dopant interaction energy $J^*$=145$meV\cdot nm^2$. These observations reveal how magnetic dopant atoms actually generate the TI mass gap locally and that, to achieve the novel physics expected of time-reversal-symmetry breaking TI materials, control of the resulting Dirac-mass gap disorder will be essential.

In three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TI) nanowires, transport occurs via gapless surface states where the spin is fixed perpendicular to the momentum[1-6]. Carriers encircling the surface thus acquire a \pi Berry phase, which is predicted to open up a gap in the lowest-energy 1D surface subband. Inserting a magnetic flux ({\Phi}) of h/2e through the nanowire should cancel the Berry phase and restore the gapless 1D mode[7-8]. However, this signature has been missing in transport experiments reported to date[9-11]. Here, we report measurements of mechanically-exfoliated 3D TI nanowires which exhibit Aharonov-Bohm oscillations consistent with topological surface transport. The use of low-doped, quasi-ballistic devices allows us to observe a minimum conductance at {\Phi} = 0 and a maximum conductance reaching e^2/h at {\Phi} = h/2e near the lowest subband (i.e. the Dirac point), as well as the carrier density dependence of the transport., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures with additional Supplement

The temperature dependence of the in-plane optical conductivity has been determined for Fe$_{1.03}$Te above and below the magnetic and structural transition at $T_N\simeq 68$ K. The electron and hole pockets are treated as two separate electronic subsystems; a strong, broad Drude response that is largely temperature independent, and a much weaker, narrow Drude response with a strong temperature dependence. Spectral weight is transferred from high to low frequency below $T_N$, resulting in the dramatic increase of both the low-frequency conductivity and the related plasma frequency. The change in the plasma frequency is due to an increase in the carrier concentration resulting from the closing of the pseudogap on the electron pocket, as well as the likely decrease of the effective mass in the antiferromagnetic state., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures with 1 table

The characteristics of topological insulators are manifested in both their surface and bulk properties, but the latter remain to be explored. Here we report bulk signatures of pressure-induced band inversion and topological phase transitions in Pb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$Se ($x=$0.00, 0.15, and 0.23). The results of infrared measurements as a function of pressure indicate the closing and the reopening of the band gap as well as a maximum in the free carrier spectral weight. The enhanced density of states near the band gap in the topological phase give rise to a steep interband absorption edge. The change of density of states also yields a maximum in the pressure dependence of the Fermi level. Thus our conclusive results provide a consistent picture of pressure-induced topological phase transitions and highlight the bulk origin of the novel properties in topological insulators.

Indium substitution turns the topological crystalline insulator (TCI) Pb$_{0.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$Te into a possible topological superconductor. To investigate the effect of the indium concentration on the crystal structure and superconducting properties of (Pb$_{0.5}$Sn$_{0.5}$)$_{1-x}$In$_{x}$Te, we have grown high-quality single crystals using a modified floating-zone method, and have performed systematic studies for indium content in the range $0\leq x\leq 0.35$. We find that the single crystals retain the rock salt structure up to the solubility limit of indium ($x\sim0.30$). Experimental dependences of the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) and the upper critical magnetic field ($H_{c2}$) on the indium content $x$ have been measured. The maximum $T_c$ is determined to be 4.7 K at $x=0.30$, with $\mu_0H_{c2}(T=0)\approx 5$ T., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Superconducting condensation energy $U_0^{int}$ has been determined by integrating the electronic entropy in various iron pnictide/chalcogenide superconducting systems. It is found that $U_0^{int}\propto T_c^n$ with $n$ = 3 to 4, which is in sharp contrast to the simple BCS prediction $U_0^{BCS}=1/2N_F\Delta_s^2$ with $N_F$ the quasiparticle density of states at the Fermi energy, $\Delta_s$ the superconducting gap. A similar correlation holds if we compute the condensation energy through $U_0^{cal}=3\gamma_n^{eff}\Delta_s^2/4\pi^2k_B^2$ with $\gamma_n^{eff}$ the effective normal state electronic specific heat coefficient. This indicates a general relationship $\gamma_n^{eff} \propto T_c^m$ with $m$ = 1 to 2, which is not predicted by the BCS scheme. The so-called "strange metal phase" [1] of high temperature (high Tc) superconductors remains at the heart of the high Tc mystery. Better experimental data and insightful theoretical work would improve our understanding of this enigmatic phase. In particular, the recent advance in angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) [2, 3], incorporating low photon energies (about 7 eV), has given a much more refined view of the many body interaction in these materials. Here, we report a new ARPES feature of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d that we demonstrate to have the key ability to distinguish between different classes of theories of the normal state. This feature---the anomaly in the nodal many body density of states (nMBDOS)---is clearly observed in the low energy ARPES data, but also observed in more conventional high energy ARPES data, when a sufficient temperature range is covered. We show that key characteristics of this anomaly are explained by a strong electron correlation model; the electron-hole asymmetry and the momentum dependent self energy emerge as key required ingredients.
