18. Object-sensitive Type Analysis for Python

Abstract

Python is an interpreted, interactive and object-oriented programming language that stresses code readability. In Python, objects interact with each other to accomplish various tasks. Such interaction is usually achieved by attribute lookup, storage and deletion. We consider whether Python's attribute access semantics with different precision affect the precision of type analysis. Type inference for Python is hard due to the extensive use of external libraries and the dynamic language features. In this thesis we propose an object-sensitive type analysis for Python based on an extension of the notion of monotone frameworks to deal with dynamic flow manipulation. In addition, we also implement a type parser to partially support retrieving types from Python stub files. Our results show that the analysis precision is not improved substantially when employing sophisticated attribute access semantics.

22. Risk of hypoglycemia following intensification of metformin treatment with insulin versus sulfonylurea

Abstract

Background: Hypoglycemia remains a common life-threatening event associated with diabetes treatment. We compared the risk of first or recurrent hypoglycemia event among metformin initiators who intensified treatment with insulin versus sulfonylurea. Methods: We assembled a retrospective cohort using databases of the Veterans Health Administration, Medicare and the National Death Index. Metformin initiators who intensified treatment with insulin or sulfonylurea were followed to either their first or recurrent hypoglycemia event using Cox proportional hazard models. Hypoglycemia was defined as hospital admission or an emergency department visit for hypoglycemia, or an outpatient blood glucose value of less than 3.3 mmol/L. We conducted additional analyses for risk of first hypoglycemia event, with death as the competing risk. Results: Among 178 341 metformin initiators, 2948 added insulin and 39 990 added sulfonylurea. Propensity score matching yielded 2436 patients taking metformin plus insulin and 12 180 taking metformin plus sulfonylurea. Patients took metformin for a median of 14 (interquartile range [IQR] 5-30) months, and the median glycated hemoglobin level was 8.1% (IQR 7.2%-9.9%) at intensification. In the group who added insulin, 121 first hypoglycemia events occurred, and 466 first events occurred in the group who added sulfonylurea (30.9 v. 24.6 events per 1000 person-years; adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 1.30, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.06-1.59). For recurrent hypoglycemia, there were 159 events in the insulin group and 585 events in the sulfonylurea group (39.1 v. 30.0 per 1000 person-years; adjusted HR 1.39, 95% CI 1.12-1.72). In separate competing risk analyses, the adjusted HR for hypoglycemia was 1.28 (95% CI 1.04-1.56). Interpretation: Among patients using metformin who could use either insulin or sulfonylurea, the addition of insulin was associated with a higher risk of hypoglycemia than the addition of sulfonylurea. 33. Low Reporting Quality of the Meta-Analyses in Diagnostic Pathology

Abstract

Context.--Little is known regarding the reporting quality of meta-analyses in diagnostic pathology. Objective.--To compare reporting quality of meta-analyses in diagnostic pathology and medicine and to examine factors associated with reporting quality of diagnostic pathology meta-analyses. Design.--Meta-analyses were identified in 12 major diagnostic pathology journals without specifying years and 4 major medicine journals in 2006 and 2011 using PubMed. Reporting quality of meta-analyses was evaluated using the 27-item checklist of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement published in 2009. A higher PRISMA score indicates higher reporting quality. Results.--Forty-one diagnostic pathology meta-analyses and 118 medicine meta-analyses were included. Overall, reporting quality of meta-analyses in diagnostic pathology was lower than that in medicine (median [interquartile range] = 22 [15, 25] versus 27 [23, 28], P < .001). Compared with medicine meta-analyses, diagnostic pathology meta analyses less likely reported 23 of the 27 items (85.2%) on the PRISMA checklist, but more likely reported the data items. Higher reporting quality of diagnostic pathology meta-analyses was associated with recent publication years (later than 2009 versus 2009 or earlier, P = .002) and non-North American first authors (versus North American, P = .001), but not journal publisher's location (P = .11). Interestingly, reporting quality was not associated with adjusted citation ratio for meta-analyses in either diagnostic pathology or medicine (P = .40 and P = .09, respectively). Conclusions.--Meta-analyses in diagnostic pathology had lower reporting quality than those in medicine. Reporting quality of diagnostic pathology meta-analyses is linked to publication year and first author's location, but not to journal publisher's location or article's adjusted citation ratios. More research and education on meta-analysis methodology may improve the reporting quality of diagnostic pathology meta-analyses. Abstract

In order to promote the possible application of direct fluorination for the performance improvement of epoxy spacers, the alumina-filled composite epoxy samples were prepared with the same formulation and technology as those for commercial epoxy spacers and were fluorinated. Surface physicochemical characteristics and basic properties of the fluorinated epoxy sample layer were investigated. ATR-IR analysis and SEM cross section observation do not show obvious differences in chemistry and thickness of the fluorinated layer between the composite epoxy sample and the unfilled “pure” epoxy sample, while SEM surface observation clearly indicates the influence of alumina particles on surface morphology of the fluorinated layer due to the likely fluorination of the particles and the interface damage. Surface potential decay measurements show that the fluorination led to an increase in surface conduction of the composite epoxy sample, similar to but not as significant as the case of the pure epoxy sample. Contact angle measurements show that the fluorination decreased the water contact angle on the composite epoxy sample, but increased the diiodomethane contact angle, also similar to the pure epoxy sample, showing a small influence of the particles on the wettability. The influences of the particles on surface physicochemical characteristics and properties should be closely associated with fluorination condition.

Abstract

Silicone rubber (SIR) has multiple formulations and three basic types of room temperature vulcanized, high temperature vulcanized, and liquid SIR. Whether or not a robust fluorinated surface layer can be formed on SIR is the prerequisite for the potential application of direct fluorination in the improvement in its surface properties. This report preliminarily demonstrates an influence of SIR formulation on the structural integrity of the fluorinated SIR surface layer, and shows the necessity or harmfulness of the presence of nanosilica fillers or micro alumina trihydrate to obtain a robust fluorinated surface layer. Further, this report investigates the properties of the robust fluorinated layers, and shows that the robust fluorinated layers have high hydrophobicity, an increased or decreased conductivity, and high resistance to surface discharge.
