Abstract

The discrete element method is used to study the deformation process and failure mechanism of rock masses under uniaxial compression when the initial joint frequency increases. In this study, a systematic analysis is carried out to investigate failure mechanisms in rock masses with special emphasis on macroscopic deformation processes and the micromechanical origin. The influences of joints on strength, deformability, stress–strain relationship, and failure mode are studied at the macroscopic level. The tensile and shear crack distribution, fragment characteristics, and energy dissipation are also analyzed to advance the understanding of the deformation process and failure mechanism of jointed rock masses. The microevolution of fabric and forces anisotropy during loading and contact force distribution provide insights into the effect of increasing initial joint frequency on the macroscopic deformation behavior of rocks. The results reveal that with the increasing initial joint frequency, the specimen exhibits brittle-ductile characteristics, and the failure mode changes from splitting to sliding along the joint surfaces. They also show how the deceleration in the growth of fabric and contact forces anisotropy develops and confirm that the increase in initial joints and corresponding microstructural changes can suppress the development of anisotropy, thereby significantly reducing the strength of rock samples. Abstract

Amyloid-β oligomer is an important biomarker and a potential therapeutic target of Alzheimer's disease in its early stage. Here, we combined superhydrophobic carbon fiber paper (CFP) with AuPt alloy nanoparticles to prepare a CFP/AuPt nanocomposite with larger specific surface area and hydrophobic surface. On this basis, we constructed an electrochemical aptasensor based on CFP/AuPt for the ultrasensitive detection of amyloid-β oligomers. The surface-coated AuPt nanoparticles greatly enhanced the electroactive area, and the hydrophobic surface increased the resisting nonspecific adsorption performance of sensor. A combination of these two features significantly improved the sensitivity and specificity of the sensor. This electrochemical aptasensor based on CFP/AuPt displayed a low detection limit of 0.16 pg/mL. This work shows a promising future in clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and provides a possible solution to electrochemical biosensors that are susceptible to interference in biological fluids.

Abstract

The highly efficient detection method for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has been attracting significant attention. In this study, AuPd alloy-modified polydopamine (AuPd-PDA) nanotubes were prepared, and an electrochemical nonenzymatic sensor based on the AuPd-PDA nanotubes was developed. A single AuPd alloy on the surface of PDA nanotubes consisted of many smaller nanoparticles of size ranging several nanometers, which greatly enhanced the catalytic activity. In addition, PDA nanotubes, as carriers of AuPd alloys, were used to amplify the signal and improve the sensitivity of H2O2sensors. Owing to its synergistic effect and structural advantage, the H2O2sensor based on AuPd-PDA nanotubes exhibited good sensing performances, including a high sensitivity of 314.2 μA mM−1cm−2, a wide linear range from 1.0 μM to 11.22 mM and a low detection limit of 0.26 μM (S/N, 3 : 1). Moreover, the detection of H2O2in HeLa and Raw 264.7 cells was also achieved, which indicated that the sensors based on AuPd-PDA nanotubes could be used for real-time monitoring of H2O2in physiological and pathological processes in a clinic.
