1. Towards a mathematical framework for modelling cell fate dynamics

Abstract

An adult human body is made up of some 30 to 40 trillion cells, all of which stem from a single fertilized egg cell. The process by which the right cells appear to arrive in their right numbers at the right time at the right place -- development -- is only understood in the roughest of outlines. This process does not happen in isolation: the egg, the embryo, the developing foetus, and the adult organism all interact intricately with their changing environments. Conceptual and, increasingly, mathematical approaches to modelling development have centred around Waddington's concept of an epigenetic landscape. This perspective enables us to talk about the molecular and cellular factors that contribute to cells reaching their terminally differentiated state: their fate. The landscape metaphor is however only a simplification of the complex process of development; it for instance does not consider environmental influences, a context which we argue needs to be explicitly taken into account and from the outset. When delving into the literature, it also quickly becomes clear that there is a lack of consistency and agreement on even fundamental concepts; for example, the precise meaning of what we refer to when talking about a `cell type' or `cell state.' Here we engage with previous theoretical and mathematical approaches to modelling cell fate -- focused on trees, networks, and landscape descriptions -- and argue that they require a level of simplification that can be problematic. We introduce random dynamical systems as one natural alternative. These provide a flexible conceptual and mathematical framework that is free of extraneous assumptions. Abstract

Previous graph neural networks (GNNs) usually assume that the graph data is with clean labels for representation learning, but it is not true in real applications. In this paper, we propose a new multi-teacher distillation method based on bi-level optimization (namely BO-NNC), to conduct noisy node classification on the graph data. Specifically, we first employ multiple self-supervised learning methods to train diverse teacher models, and then aggregate their predictions through a teacher weight matrix. Furthermore, we design a new bi-level optimization strategy to dynamically adjust the teacher weight matrix based on the training progress of the student model. Finally, we design a label improvement module to improve the label quality. Extensive experimental results on real datasets show that our method achieves the best results compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract

Although current prompt learning methods have successfully been designed to effectively reuse the large pre-trained models without fine-tuning their large number of parameters, they still have limitations to be addressed, i.e., without considering the adverse impact of meaningless patches in every image and without simultaneously considering in-sample generalization and out-of-sample generalization. In this paper, we propose an adaptive multi-modality prompt learning to address the above issues. To do this, we employ previous text prompt learning and propose a new image prompt learning. The image prompt learning achieves in-sample and out-of-sample generalization, by first masking meaningless patches and then padding them with the learnable parameters and the information from texts. Moreover, each of the prompts provides auxiliary information to each other, further strengthening these two kinds of generalization. Experimental results on real datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms SOTA methods, in terms of different downstream tasks.

Abstract

Food traceability is an important means to ensure food quality and safety. For the purpose of providing a reference for future research on food traceability in China, a comprehensive bibliometric and visual analysis of papers concerning global food traceability included in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) database from 2001 to 2022 was performed. The results showed that 3 020 authors from 1 136 research institutions in 80 countries/regions published their research on food traceability in 255 journals, indicating frequent cross-national and cross-regional cooperation and cross-disciplinary integration. China, Italy, the United States, Spain, the Netherlands produced a large volume of research and built strong cooperation. The overall quality of food traceability research in Italy, the United States, the Netherlands, and Spain was high. The research fields were concentrated in food science and technology, chemistry, agriculture, and engineering. Additionally, many research achievements were made in the fields of computer science, ecology and environmental science, nutrition and dietetics. The research focuses included food quality and safety, food supply chain management, geographical origin, traceability technology, food authentication and certification, and willingness to pay. In the future, the academic frontier will focus on three aspects: intelligent food traceability system based on Industry 4.0, food authentication and detection technology represented by genomics and next-generation sequencing technology, and the mechanisms of the motivation of participants, interest game and premium payment in food traceability system.

37. Symptom clusters in patients with hypertensive cerebral haemorrhage during the acute phase and their correlation with prognostic quality of life

Abstract

Objective To explore the composition of symptom clusters in the acute phase of patients with hypertensive cerebral haemorrhage and to analyse their correlation with prognostic quality of life. Methods From July 2021 to June 2022, 396 patients with hypertensive cerebral haemorrhage hospitalised in neurosurgery departments of two tertiary care hospitals in Tangshan City were selected and surveyed using the General Information Questionnaire, the Memory Symptom Assessment Scale and the Stroke-Specific Quality of Life Scale. An exploratory factor method was used to extract symptom clusters and Biased correlation analysis was applied to analyse the correlation between symptom clusters and quality of life. Results Symptoms with a higher incidence in the acute phase in patients with hypertensive cerebral hemorrhage included loss of appetite (77.3%), low energy/weakness (74.0%), pain (72.9%), weight loss (71.5%), and feeling nervous (70.7%); symptoms with a higher degree of severity included loss of appetite (2.01±1.22), low energy/weakness (2.00±1.32), pain (1.97±1.30), vomiting/nausea (1.83±1.21), difficulty concentrating (1.81±1.30); symptoms with higher levels of distress included pain (2.27±1.53), vomiting/nausea (2.20±1.48), vomiting (1.98±1.59), low energy/weakness (1.96±1.30), dizziness (1.81±1.40). A total of six symptom clusters were extracted by the exploratory factor method, namely digestive symptom cluster, psychological symptom cluster, pain-fatigue related symptom cluster, physical-cognitive impairment symptom cluster, speech-swallowing disorder symptom cluster and pneumonia related symptom cluster, all of which were negatively correlated with prognostic quality of life with correlation coefficients of-0.261,-0.388,-0.335,-0.513,-0.304,-0.273. Conclusion The presence of six symptom clusters in the acute phase of hypertensive cerebral haemorrhage patients, all of which were negatively associated with prognosis of quality of life, suggests that medical staff should identify or predict symptom clusters in a timely and accurate manner and optimise symptom management strategies to improve patients ‘ prognosis of quality of life.

Abstract

To adhere to the stringent time and budget requirements of construction projects, contractors are utilizing prefabricated construction methods to expedite the construction process. Prefabricated construction methods require an adequate schedule and understanding by the contractors and constructors to be successful. The specificity of prefabricated construction often leads to inefficient scheduling and costly rework time. The designer, contractor, and constructors must have a strong understanding of the assembly process to experience the full benefits of the method. At the root of understanding the assembly process is visualizing how the process is intended to be performed. Currently, a virtual construction model is used to explain and better visualize the construction process. However, creating a virtual construction model is currently time consuming and requires experienced personnel. The proposed simulation of the virtual assembly will increase the automation of virtual construction modeling by implementing the data available in a building information modeling (BIM) model. This paper presents various factors (i.e., formalization of construction sequence based on the level of development (LOD)) that needs to be addressed for the development of automated virtual assembly. Two case studies are presented to demonstrate these factors.
