Purpose The purpose of this paper is to prepare metal/polymer composite materials prepared by additive manufacturing (AM) technology. Design/methodology/approach The effect of sintering parameters including laser power, scanning speed and slice thickness on strength and accuracy of selective laser sintering (SLS) parts were analyzed experimentally. Then, the laser sintering mechanism of nylon-12 coated copper was discussed through analyzing the interfacial reaction of nylon-12 and copper. The SLS parts were infiltrated with epoxy resin to meet the strength requirements of injection molding. Findings In this study, mechanical mixed nylon-12/copper and nylon-12 coated copper composite powders were investigated and compared as SLS materials. An effective dissolution–precipitation method was proposed to prepare nylon-12 coated copper powders with better processing and mechanical properties. The bending strength and modulus of fabricated parts after infiltration with epoxy reach 65.3 MPa and 3,200 MPa, respectively. Originality/value The composite materials can be used in the manufacture of injection molds with a conformal cooling channel for the production of common plastics in prototype quantities, showing a broad application prospect in rapid tooling.

As a promising metalwork processing technology, electromagnetic induction heating (EMIH) method has been applied in dealing with bolted flange joints in turbomachinery. In this study, a 3-D finite element model of electromagnetic induction heating system for the bolted flange joint is established, and the specific governing equations are derived based on Maxwell’s principle. The alternately-coupled magneto-thermal analysis is carried out considering temperature-dependent material properties to obtain the temperature distribution, followed with the uncoupled thermal-mechanical analysis to acquire the axial stress and deformation in EMIH process. The magnetic induction intensity mainly concentrates at the inner wall region, attenuates seriously along the radial direction, and reduces to almost zero at the outer wall. Due to the skin effect, the heat transfers radially and axially outward, indicating a diamondlike-shaped development from the center to the surrounding region. The axial stress with and without initial pretension are also discussed respectively. Then the corresponding experiments are introduced and carried out to validate the reliability of numerical simulation results. By comparing the results of the center point of inner surface and outer surface, the numerical simulation is proved reliable with a 5∼10% reasonable deviation. Further, the induction heating process has been improved through the optimization method based on pattern search algorithm. By adopting the stepped input current density optimized in the study, the optimal thermal stress tends to be constant and the final heating time reduces by 20.5% in the safe range of stress.

Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) porous structures are recognized as the most promising bionic artificial structures for tissue engineering. The fatigue properties of additive manufactured porous structures are essential for long-term use in a dynamical bio-skeletal environment. The aim of this study is to study the compression–compression fatigue behaviour and the underlying fatigue mechanism of Gyroid cellular structures (GCS), a typical TPMS porous structure. The high-cycle fatigue results show that both cyclic ratcheting and fatigue damage phenomena contribute to the failure of GCS during fatigue testing. For most fatigue loading stress, the failure samples have nearly 45° fracture bands along the diagonal surface. The fatigue ratio of GCS reaches 0.35 for as-built samples and can be raised to 0.45 after sandblasting treatment. The fatigue ratio values are higher than most of the other bending-dominated lattice structures, suggesting superior fatigue resistance properties of GCSs due to the smooth surface connection between struts. Besides, a systematic investigation of the crack initiation and propagation was conducted by both deformation analysis and finite element method to support experimental phenomena. The results also indicate that the fatigue resistance properties of GCSs are significantly enhanced by sandblasting post-treatment, through removing the adhered powder particles, inducing compressive residual stress on the surface and generating a nanocrystalline zone.

In order to adapt to the high-efficiency and low-resistance performances required by the new generation of gas turbine, a new type of two-pass rectangular channel with cross bridge and oval-shaped dimple structure is proposed for internal cooling of blade mid chord region. Firstly, the flow structure, heat transfer and friction characteristics of the novel channels under stationary and rotating conditions are numerically analyzed and compared in detail. Then the effects of cross bridge type/layout and dimple dimension/arrangement on the cooling performance are discussed. And the coupling mechanism of cross bridge, turning bend, oval-shaped dimple and rotation effect is revealed. The results show that the introduction of the cross bridge enables the coolant flow into the second pass in a distributed manner, which weakens the flow aggregation and extrusion in the tip turning bend region, thus the flow structure is optimized. Although the heat transfer is slightly weakened, the friction factor is reduced by 66.3% and 51.4%, and the overall thermal performance is improved by 16.7% and 11.6% (different cases) at most, for stationary and rotating conditions, respectively. The oval-shaped dimple achieves local heat transfer enhancement by controlling flow separation and reattachment. Furthermore, the optimized cross bridge type/layout and dimple dimension/arrangement are also obtained. This research will provide important reference data for the development of high-efficiency mid chord cooling technology for gas turbine blade.

The cylindrical film seal, with prominent advantages of non-contact, little wear, long durability and high stability, is suitable for high-speed turbomachinery theoretically. To improve the leakage problem and design seals with significant performance for supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) turbomachinery, this paper establishes a spiral-grooved cylindrical film seal structure and aims to numerically investigate the effects of structural and operating parameters. The hydrodynamic characteristics are obtained by the computational fluid dynamics method. It indicates that with the increase of eccentricity, the leakage, floating force, friction torque and Nu all ascend. When the film thickens, the leakage increases while the floating force and friction torque decrease, and there is a transition from heat dissipation to absorption. The rotating speed and inlet pressure have a significant influence on the sealing performance under different working conditions. The leakage, floating force, friction torque and Nu all rise up with the increase of inlet pressure. The leakage and Nu decrease while the floating force and friction torque increase with the escalation of rotating speed. In addition, great results are obtained by arranging cylindrical film seal on the impeller back of a SCO2 radial-inflow turbine. Its power and efficiency are only slightly reduced by 0.58% and 0.41% respectively compared with the configuration without considering leakage, which suggests the potential applicability of cylindrical film seal to SCO2 turbomachinery.

According to the composite design, a series of black TiO2/graphene composites were synthesized to improve its photocatalytic activity. TiO2 is generated in situ on the surface of graphene by a facile sol-gel method. The combination of graphene and TiO2 was beneficial for eliminating the opportunity of photogenerated electron-hole recombination due to the excellent conductivity of graphene. In the subsequent hydrogenation process, the self-doping Ti3+ was introduced accompanied by the crystallization of amorphous TiO2. The narrowed bandgap caused by self-doping Ti3+ enhanced the visible light absorption and make the composites appear black. Both of them improved the photocatalytic performance of the synthesized black TiO2/graphene composites. The band structure of the composite was analyzed by valence band XPS, revealing the reason for the high visible light catalytic performance of the composite. The results proved that the black TiO2/graphene composites synthesized show attractive potential for applications in environmental and energy issues.

The Strategy of choosing local region in the facial image of LRPCA makes it perform efficiently in human face recognition. One kernel of LRPCA is the Local Region Choose. So prefer the better performs of LRPCA on human face recognition, the region choose strategy is proposed to be the key. By the discussion of the some region templates, a well strategy is given by experiments.
