Abstract Objectives Our study aimed to investigate the prevalence of cognitive impairment(CI) and the associated risk factors among elderly people in Shanghai urban area, China. Methods A population-based survey was conducted among people aged 55 years or older in urban areas of Shanghai. Face-to-face interviews were carried out to collect information including demographic characteristics, medical history, and medication use, etc. The validated Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE) was used to screen subjects with CI, and the criteria of CI were adjusted for education levels. Results A total of 3,176 home-living residents (≥55 years old) were included in the study. Among them, 266 people (102 men and 164 women) were identified as cognition impaired, with a prevalence of 8.38% (266/3,176, 95% CI: (8.26, 8.49)) for both genders, 9.21% (102/1,107,95% CI: (9.18, 9.33)) for men and 7.93% (164/2,069, 95% CI: (7.80, 8.09)) for women, respectively. Furthermore, we found that several significant risk factors, including social factors(education, number of children, marriage status, and family structure), physiological factors (age, blood glucose level, and obesity), factors on living styles(physical exercise, diet & chronic diseases), and genetic factor(ApoE), associated with CI onset. Conclusions This study confirms the high prevalence of CI among the elderly population in the Shanghai urban in China, similar to previous epidemiologic studies in Western countries. The putative risk factors associated with CI merit further investigated.

Abstract Background Before 1986, scrub typhus was only found endemic in southern China. Because human infections typically occur in the summer, it is called "summer type". During the autumn-winter period of 1986, a new type of scrub typhus was identified in Shandong and northern Jiangsu province of northern China. This newly recognized scrub typhus was subsequently reported in many areas of northern China and was then called "autumn-winter type". However, clinical characteristics of associated cases have not been reported. Methods From 1995 to 2006, all suspected scrub typhus cases in five township hospitals of Feixian county, Shandong province were enrolled. Indirect immunofluorescent assay (IFA) was used as confirmatory serodiagnosis test. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) connected with restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and sequence analyses were used for genotyping of O. tsutsugamushi DNAs. Clinical symptoms and demography of confirmed cases were analyzed. Results A total of 480 scrub typhus cases were confirmed. The cases occurred every year exclusively between September and December with a peak occurrence in October. The case numbers were relatively higher in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 2000 than in other years. 57.9% of cases were in the group aged 21–50. More cases occurred in male (56%) than in female (44%). The predominant occupational group of the cases was farmers (85.0%). Farm work was reported the primary exposure to infection in 67.7% of cases. Fever, rash, and eschar were observed in 100.0%, 90.4%, and 88.5% of cases, respectively. Eschars formed frequently on or around umbilicus, abdomen areas, and front and back of waist (34.1%) in both genders. Normal results were observed in 88.7% (WBC counts), 84.5% (PLT counts), and 89.7% (RBC counts) of cases, respectively. Observations from the five hospitals were compared and no significant differences were found. Conclusion The autumn-winter type scrub typhus in northern China occurred exclusively from September to December with a peak occurrence in October, which was different from the summer type in southern China. In comparison with the summer type, complications associated with autumn-winter type scrub typhus were less severe, and abnormalities of routine hematological parameters were less obvious.

Sugar substitutes are popular due to their akin taste and low calories. However, excessive use of aspartame and erythritol can have varying effects. While D‐allulose is presently deemed a secure alternative to sugar, its excessive consumption is not devoid of cellular stress implications. In this study, the evolution of Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN) is directed to utilize allulose as sole carbon source through a combination of adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) and fluorescence‐activated droplet sorting (FADS) techniques. Employing whole genome sequencing (WGS) and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats interference (CRISPRi) in conjunction with compensatory expression displayed those genetic mutations in sugar and amino acid metabolic pathways, including glnP, glpF, gmpA, nagE, pgmB, ybaN, etc., increased allulose assimilation. Enzyme‐substrate dynamics simulations and deep learning predict enhanced substrate specificity and catalytic efficiency in nagE A247E and pgmB G12R mutants. The findings evince that these mutations hold considerable promise in enhancing allulose uptake and facilitating its conversion into glycolysis, thus signifying the emergence of a novel metabolic pathway for allulose utilization. The recovery of carbon dioxide (CO2) through carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology to produce valuable chemicals has good industrial prospects, and it is also an effective method to solve the problem of global warming and achieve sustainable development. Unfortunately, catalysts are needed to realize the chemical conversion of CO2 due to its low reactivity. In this work, we selected transition metal copper ions and rigid triazole organic ligand 4-(1H-1,2, 4-triazol-1-yl)-benzoic acid to synthesize two-dimensional(2D) bilayer coordination polymer containing pentanuclear copper cluster by solvothermal synthesis method, and its molecular formula is [Cu5(TABC)4(COO)2(μ-O)2(NO3)2(H2O)·11H2O] (Cu-TABC). The pentanuclear [Cu5O2(COO)6] cluster forms a 2D layered structure by connecting to linear ligands, and the three-dimensional(3D) supramolecular structure with one-dimensional(1D) channels is formed by π–π interaction between layers and further parallel stacking, in which the channel window is quadrilateral and the size is 11.6 × 11.5 Å. Simultaneously, coordination unsaturated copper ions can be used as Lewis acid sites to catalyze the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides. Importantly, Cu-TABC exhibits excellent catalytic performance, recoverability and significant size effect under solvent-free and mild conditions (0.1 MPa and 25 °C). A pentanuclear Cu(II)-based 2D bilayer coordination polymer was used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides with high activity under mild conditions. BACKGROUND: Pesticide resistance is a long‐standing and growing problem in the chemical control of invertebrate pests. Molecular diagnostic methods can facilitate pesticide resistance management by accurately and efficiently detecting resistant mutations and their frequency. In this study, the kompetitive allele specific PCR (KASP) approach, a technology for high‐throughput single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping, is validated as a useful method for characterizing genotypes at a pesticide‐resistance locus for the first time. We focus on the spinetoram resistance mutation of G275E in the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor alpha 6 (nAChR α6) subunit gene of Thrips palmi. RESULTS: Of the 341 individuals of Thrips palmi tested, 98.24% were successfully genotyped, with 100% concordance with Sanger sequencing results. We then quantitatively mixed genomic DNA of known genotypes to establish 21 DNA mixtures with a resistant allele frequency ranging from 0 to 100% at steps of 5%. The linear discriminant analysis (LDA) showed that 75.8% of original grouped cases were correctly classified; six groups had no overlap in membership (resistant allele frequency: 0%, 5%, 10–75%, 80–85%, 90–95%, and 100%). When we chose 11 pooled samples with 10% steps for LDA, 84.4% of original grouped cases were correctly classified; seven groups had no overlap in membership (0%, 10%, 20–30%, 40–70%, 80%, 90%, 100%). The results indicated that KASP applied to pooled samples may provide a semi‐quantitative estimate of resistance. CONCLUSIONS: Our study points to the suitability of KASP for high‐throughput genotyping of genotypes affecting pesticide resistance and semi‐quantitative assessments of resistance allele frequencies in populations. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.
