5. Enhanced Chromium (VI) Removal by Micron-Scale Zero-Valent Iron Pretreated with Aluminum Chloride under Aerobic Conditions.

Abstract

Micron-scale zero-valent iron (ZVI)-based material has been applied for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) decontamination in wastewater treatment and groundwater remediation, but the passivation problem has limited its field application. In this study, we combined aluminum chloride solution with ZVI (pcZVI-AlCl3) to enhance Cr(VI) removal behavior under aerobic conditions. The optimal pre-corrosion conditions were found to be 2.5 g/L ZVI, 0.5 mM AlCl3, and a 4 h preconditioning period. Different kinds of techniques were applied to detect the properties of preconditioned ZVI and corrosion products. The 57Fe Mössbauer spectra showed that proportions of ZVI, Fe3O4, and FeOOH in pcZVI-AlCl3 were 49.22%, 34.03%, and 16.76%, respectively. The formation of Al(OH)3 in the corrosion products improved its pHpzc (point of zero charge) for Cr(VI) adsorption. Continuous-flow experiments showed its great potential for Cr(VI) removal in field applications. The ZVI and corrosion products showed a synergistic effect in enhancing electron transfer for Cr(VI) removal. The mechanisms underlying Cr(VI) removal by pcZVI-AlCl3 included adsorption, reduction, and precipitation, and the contribution of adsorption was less. 6. The effects of small-needle-knife therapy on pain and mobility from knee osteoarthritis: A pilot randomized controlled study

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effect of small needle-knife therapy in people with painful knee osteoarthritis. Design Pilot randomised, controlled trial. Setting. Rehabilitation hospital. Subjects. In-patients with osteo-arthritis of the knee. Interventions: Either 1-3 small needle-knife treatments over 7 days or oral Celecoxib. All patients stayed in hospital three weeks, receiving the same mobility-focused rehabilitation. Measures. Oxford Knee Score (OKS), gait speed and kinematics were recorded at baseline, at 3 weeks (discharge) and at three-months (OKS only). Withdrawal from the study, and adverse events associated with the small needle knife therapy were recorded. Results: 83 patients were randomized: 44 into the control group, of whom 10 were lost by 3 weeks and 12 at 3 months; 39 into the experimental group of whom 8 were lost at 3 weeks and 3 months. The mean (SE) OKS scores at baseline were Control 35.86 ( 1.05), Exp 38.38 ( 0.99); at three weeks 26.64 (0.97) and 21.94 (1.23); and at three months 25.83 (0.91) and 20.48 (1.14) The mean (SE) gait speed at baseline was 1.07 (0.03) m/sec (Control) and 0.98 (0,03), and at three weeks was 1.14 (0.03) and 1.12 (0.03) (p < 0.05). Linear mixed model statistical analysis showed that the improvements in the experimental group were statistically significant for total OKS score at discharge and three months. Conclusions: Small needle-knife therapy added to standard therapy for patients with knee osteoarthritis, was acceptable, safe, and reduced pain and improved global function on the Oxford Knee Score. Further research is warranted.

7. Potential benefits of a ketogenic diet to improve response and recovery from physical exertion in people with Myalgic encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS): A feasibility study

Abstract

Background. Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) affects approximately 250,000 people in the UK. The condition varies in severity causing long-term physical and cognitive fatigue which is not alleviated by rest. Whilst the pathology is not understood, recent evidence suggests metabolic abnormalities may be associated with the manifestation of symptoms, particularly involving the metabolism of glucose and energy production. The use of ketone bodies as an alternative energy substrate may be beneficial to people with ME/CFS, in order to by-pass the glycolytic pathway, enhance energy production and reduce fatiguing outcomes. Study Design and Methods. Using a pragmatic collective case study with repeated measures methodology we investigated the feasibility of following a ketogenic diet and potential effects of the high fat, low carbohydrate diet on response to physical activity in people with ME/CFS (n=3) and healthy controls (n=3) using a submaximal exercise stress test both with and without dietary intervention. Exercise tolerance (mins), rate of oxygen consumption (VO2) to workload (75W), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), rate of perceived effort (RPE) and lactate response were measured throughout and descriptive statistics performed. Results. We found that the ketogenic diet was followed, with compliance higher in the pwME/CFS. Variations in response following the ketogenic diet was observed across individuals in minutes performed, VO2, HR, RER, and RPE post diet but the KD only limited exercise capacity in the control individuals. Individuals responded differently to the KD but group trends have been reported as means and standard deviation. The KD resulted in a decrease in RER at submax in the controls with a mean change of 0.07 from baseline (0.86 ± 0.1) to post intervention (0.79 ± 0.1) compared to a mean change of 0.02 in the ME/CFS from baseline (1.03 ± 0.1) to post intervention (1.01 ± 0.1). Abstract

Objective: To investigate whether inhalable particulate matters can cause the damage of chromosome or mitotic apparatus to produce micronucleus, and to evaluate genetic toxicology of moxa smoke on chromosome., Methods: By MTT method, the 24 h half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of moxa smoke condensation (MSC) on Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells was 0.087 mg/mL. CHO cells, which were cultured in vitro, were divided into a solvent control group, a positive control group (cyclophosphamide as solvent), a low concentration group, a moderate concentration group and a high concentration group. The low concentration group, moderate concentration group and high concentration group were set approximately 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 of IC50, respectively. Whether micronucleus had dose-effect response induced by the damage of chromosome or mitotic apparatus was observed after CHO cells were contaminated by MSC in the low concentration group, moderate concentration group and high concentration group., Results: The rate of micronucleus induced by MSC in the low concentration group, moderate concentration group and high concentration group was higher than that in the solvent control group (all P < 0.05), which presented dosage-effect response. The experiment was repeated 3 times, indicating it was repeatable with statistical significance., Conclusion: High concentration of MSC shows toxicity to induce chromosome damage, which disappears at low concentration. The genetic toxicology is also dependent on concentration, and the concentration of moxa smoke is essential. In clinical treatment, it is noted to control the level of moxa smoke, while the clinical safety standard of moxa smoke concentration is in need of further study.

Abstract

Objective: To observe the effects of intervention of moxa smoke with different concentrations on superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum and lung of male rats, so as to explore the safety concentration of moxa smoke., Methods: A total of 32 Wistar male rats were randomly divided into a control group, a low-concentration group, a moderate-concentration group and a high-concentration group, 8 rats in each one. All the rats were exposed in the full-automatic toxicant exposure cabinet, and the overshadow of moxa smoke was set at 0%, 10%, 40% and 70%, respectively. Each rat was exposed for 20 min per day. After 26 weeks, the activities of SOD and content of MDA in serum, lung organ and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid were tested., Results: Compared with the control group, the activities of serum SOD in the high-concentration group were reduced (P< 0. 05), but those in the low-concentration group and moderate-concentration group were not significantly different (both P>0. 05). Compared with the control group, the content of serum MDA in the low-concentration group, moderate-concentration group and high-concentration group was increased insignificantly (all P>0. 05). There were no significant differences regarding activities of SOD and content of MDA in lung organ and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid among each moxa smoke group (all P>0. 05)., Conclusion: There is no obvious toxic reaction in the low-concentration group and moderate-concentration group; in the high-concentration group the antioxidant ability is damaged due to long-term exposure.
