This paper is a tutorial introduction to the field of unsourced multiple access (UMAC) protocols. We first provide a historical survey of the evolution of random access protocols, focusing specifically on the case in which uncoordinated users share a wireless broadcasting medium. Next, we highlight the change of perspective originated by the UMAC model, in which the physical and medium access layer's protocols cooperate, thus reframing random access as a novel coding-theoretic problem. By now, a large variety of UMAC protocols (codes) emerged, necessitating a certain classification that we indeed propose here. Although some random access schemes require a radical change of the physical layer, others can be implemented with minimal changes to existing industry standards. As an example, we discuss a simple modification to the 5GNR Release 16 random access channel that builds on the UMAC theory and that dramatically improves energy efficiency for systems with even moderate number of simultaneous users (e.g., $5-10$ dB gain for $10-50$ users), and also enables handling of high number of users, something completely out of reach of the state-of-the-art., Comment: Proceedings of the IEEE, accepted for publication

This report summarizes some considerations on possible evolutions of grant-free random access in the next generation of the 3GPP wireless cellular standard. The analysis is carried out by mapping the problem to the recently-introduced unsourced multiple access channel (UMAC) setup. By doing so, the performance of existing solutions can be benchmarked with information-theoretic bounds, assessing the potential gains that can be achieved over legacy 3GPP schemes. The study focuses on the two-step random access (2SRA) protocol introduced by Release 16 of the 5G New Radio standard, investigating its applicability to support large MTC / IoT terminal populations in a grant-free fashion. The analysis shows that the existing 2SRA scheme may not succeed in providing energy-efficient support to large user populations. Modifications to the protocol are proposed that enable remarkable gains in both energy and spectral efficiency while retaining a strong resemblance to the legacy protocol., Comment: Version 1.0 of the report

We analyze the performance of enhanced spread spectrum Aloha (E-SSA) in the framework of unsourced multiple access (UMAC). The asynchronous, unframed transmission of E-SSA is modified to enable a direct comparison with framed UMAC schemes and with Polyanskiy's achievability bound. The design of E-SSA is tailored to the UMAC setting, resorting to short polar codes and the use of a timing channel to improve the energy efficiency of the protocol. We assess the impact of the preamble length and of the spreading factor on the system efficiency. The resulting scheme exhibits simplicity at the transmitter and linear complexity with respect to the number of active users at the receiver, approaching the UMAC achievability bound in close competition with the best known UMAC schemes., Comment: Pre-print version of the IEEE Communications Letter

Most low-density parity-check (LDPC) code constructions are considered over finite fields. In this work, we focus on regular LDPC codes over integer residue rings and analyze their performance with respect to the Lee metric. Their error-correction performance is studied over two channel models, in the Lee metric. The first channel model is a discrete memoryless channel, whereas in the second channel model an error vector is drawn uniformly at random from all vectors of a fixed Lee weight. It is known that the two channel laws coincide in the asymptotic regime, meaning that their marginal distributions match. For both channel models, we derive upper bounds on the block error probability in terms of a random coding union bound as well as sphere packing bounds that make use of the marginal distribution of the considered channels. We estimate the decoding error probability of regular LDPC code ensembles over the channels using the marginal distribution and determining the expected Lee weight distribution of a random LDPC code over a finite integer ring. By means of density evolution and finite-length simulations, we estimate the error-correction performance of selected LDPC code ensembles under belief propagation decoding and a low-complexity symbol message passing decoding algorithm and compare the performances. The analysis developed in this paper may serve to design regular LDPC codes over integer residue rings for storage and cryptographic application.

Chase-Pyndiah decoding is widely used for decoding product codes. However, this method is suboptimal and requires scaling the soft information exchanged during the iterative processing. In this paper, we propose a framework for obtaining the scaling coefficients based on maximizing the generalized mutual information. Our approach yields gains up to 0.11 dB for product codes with two-error correcting extended BCH component codes over the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel compared to the original Chase-Pyndiah decoder with heuristically obtained coefficients. We also introduce an extrinsic version of the Chase-Pyndiah decoder and associate product codes with a turbo-like code ensemble to derive a Monte Carlo-based density evolution analysis. The trade-off between reliability, latency, and energy-efficiency is a central problem in communication systems. Advanced hybrid automated repeat request (HARQ) techniques can reduce the number of retransmissions required for reliable communication, but they have a significant computational cost. On the other hand, strict energy constraints apply mainly to devices, while the access point receiving their packets is usually connected to the electrical grid. Therefore, moving the computational complexity required for HARQ schemes from the transmitter to the receiver may provide a way to overcome this trade-off. To achieve this, we propose the Reinforcement-based Adaptive Feedback (RAF) scheme, in which the receiver adaptively learns how much additional redundancy it requires to decode a packet and sends rich feedback (i.e., more than a single bit), requesting the coded retransmission of specific symbols. Simulation results show that the RAF scheme achieves a better trade-off between energy-efficiency, reliability, and latency, compared to existing HARQ solutions and a fixed threshold-based policy. Our RAF scheme can easily adapt to different modulation schemes, and since it relies on the posterior probabilities of the codeword symbols at the decoder, it can generalize to different channel statistics.

A class of rate-adaptive protograph MacKay-Neal (MN) codes is introduced and analyzed. The code construction employs an outer distribution matcher (DM) to adapt the rate of the scheme. The DM is coupled with an inner protograph-based low-density parity-check (LDPC) code, whose base matrix is optimized via density evolution analysis to approach the Shannon limit of the binary-input additive white Gaussian noise (biAWGN) channel over a given range of code rates. The density evolution analysis is complemented by finite-length simulations, and by a study of the error floor performance.

We study a system in which two-state Markov sources send status updates to a common receiver over a slotted ALOHA random access channel. We characterize the performance of the system in terms of state estimation entropy (SEE), which measures the uncertainty at the receiver about the sources' state. Two channel access strategies are considered: a reactive policy that depends on the source behaviour and a random one that is independent of it. We prove that the considered policies can be studied using two different hidden Markov models and show through a density evolution analysis that the reactive strategy outperforms the random one in terms of SEE while the opposite is true for age of information. Furthermore, we characterize the probability of error in the state estimation at the receiver, considering a maximum a posteriori and a low-complexity (decode & hold) estimator. Our study provides useful insights on the design trade-offs that emerge when different performance metrics are adopted. Moreover, we show how the source statistics significantly impact the system performance.

We study the dynamic behavior of frameless ALOHA, both in terms of throughput and age of information (AoI). In particular, differently from previous studies, our analysis accounts for the fact that the number of terminals contending the channel may vary over time, as a function of the duration of the previous contention period. The stability of the protocol is analyzed via a drift analysis, which allows us to determine the presence of stable and unstable equilibrium points. We also provide an exact characterization of the AoI performance, through which we determine the impact of some key protocol parameters, such as the maximum length of the contention period, on the average AoI. We present a finite blocklength performance bound for a DNA storage channel with insertions, deletions, and substitutions. The considered bound -- the dependency testing (DT) bound, introduced by Polyanskiy et al. in 2010 -- provides an upper bound on the achievable frame error probability and can be used to benchmark coding schemes in the practical short-to-medium blocklength regime. In particular, we consider a concatenated coding scheme where an inner synchronization code deals with insertions and deletions and the outer code corrects remaining (mostly substitution) errors. The bound depends on the inner synchronization code. Thus, it allows to guide its choice. We then consider low-density parity-check codes for the outer code, which we optimize based on extrinsic information transfer charts. The present paper focuses on an IoT setting in which a large number of devices generate time-stamped updates addressed to a common gateway. Medium access is regulated following a grant-free approach, and the system aims at maintaining an up-to-date knowledge at the receiver, measured through the average network age of information (AoI). In this context, we propose a variation of the irregular repetition slotted ALOHA (IRSA) protocol. The scheme, referred to as age-threshold IRSA (AT-IRSA), leverages feedback provided by the receiver to admit to the channel only devices whose AoI exceeds a dynamically adapted target value. By means of detailed networks simulations, as well as of a simple yet tight analytical approximation, we demonstrate that the approach can more than halve the average network AoI compared to plain IRSA, and offers notable improvements over feedback-based state-of-the-art slotted ALOHA solutions recently proposed in the literature.

We provide a characterization of the peak age of information (AoI) achievable in a random-access system operating according to the frameless ALOHA protocol. Differently from previous studies, our analysis accounts for the fact that the number of terminals contending the channel may vary over time, as a function of the duration of the previous contention period. The exact characterization of the AoI provided in this paper, which is based on a Markovian analysis, reveals the impact of some key protocol parameters such as the maximum length of the contention period, on the average peak AoI. Specifically, we show that setting this parameter so as to maximize the throughput may result in an AoI degradation.

The problem of scalar multiplication applied to vectors is considered in the Lee metric. Unlike in other metrics, the Lee weight of a vector may be increased or decreased by the product with a nonzero, nontrivial scalar. This problem is of particular interest for cryptographic applications, like for example Lee metric code-based cryptosystems, since an attacker may use scalar multiplication to reduce the Lee weight of the error vector and thus to reduce the complexity of the corresponding generic decoder. The scalar multiplication problem is analyzed in the asymptotic regime. Furthermore, the construction of a vector with constant Lee weight using integer partitions is analyzed and an efficient method for drawing vectors of constant Lee weight uniformly at random from the set of all such vectors is given.

We study the performance of nonbinary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over finite integer rings over two channels that arise from the Lee metric. The first channel is a discrete memory-less channel (DMC) matched to the Lee metric. The second channel adds to each codeword an error vector of constant Lee weight, where the error vector is picked uniformly at random from the set of vectors of constant Lee weight. It is shown that the marginal conditional distributions of the two channels coincide, in the limit of large block length. Random coding union bounds on the block error probability are derived for both channels. Moreover, the performance of selected LDPC code ensembles is analyzed by means of density evolution and finite-length simulations, with belief propagation decoding and with a low-complexity symbol message passing algorithm and it is compared to the derived bounds.

Group testing allows saving chemical reagents, analysis time, and costs, by testing pools of samples instead of individual samples. We introduce a class of group testing protocols with small dilution, suited to operate even at high prevalence ($5\%-10\%$), and maximizing the fraction of samples classified positive/negative within the first round of tests. Precisely, if the tested group has exactly one positive sample then the protocols identify it without further individual tests. The protocols also detect the presence of two or more positives in the group, in which case a second round could be applied to identify the positive individuals. With a prevalence of $5\%$ and maximum dilution 6, with 100 tests we classify 242 individuals, $92\%$ of them in one round and $8\%$ requiring a second individual test. This letter analyzes a class of information freshness metrics for large IoT systems in which terminals employ slotted ALOHA to access a common channel. Considering a Gilbert- Elliot channel model, information freshness is evaluated through a penalty function that follows a power law of the time elapsed since the last received update, in contrast with the linear growth of age of information. By means of a signal flow graph analysis of Markov processes, we provide exact closed form expressions for the average penalty and for the peak penalty violation probability.

We present our vision for a departure from the established way of architecting and assessing communication networks, by incorporating the semantics of information for communications and control in networked systems. We define semantics of information, not as the meaning of the messages, but as their significance, possibly within a real time constraint, relative to the purpose of the data exchange. We argue that research efforts must focus on laying the theoretical foundations of a redesign of the entire process of information generation, transmission and usage in unison by developing: advanced semantic metrics for communications and control systems; an optimal sampling theory combining signal sparsity and semantics, for real-time prediction, reconstruction and control under communication constraints and delays; semantic compressed sensing techniques for decision making and inference directly in the compressed domain; semantic-aware data generation, channel coding, feedback, multiple and random access schemes that reduce the volume of data and the energy consumption, increasing the number of supportable devices., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, 1500 words

We explore the problem of deriving a posteriori probabilities of being defective for the members of a population in the non-adaptive group testing framework. Both noiseless and noisy testing models are addressed. The technique, which relies of a trellis representation of the test constraints, can be applied efficiently to moderate-size populations. In this paper we investigate the performance of caching schemes based on fountain codes in a heterogeneous satellite network. We consider multiple cache-aided hubs which are connected to a geostationary satellite through backhaul links. With the aimof reducing the average number of transmissions over the satellite backhaul link, we propose the use of a caching scheme based on fountain codes. We derive a simple analytical expression of the average backhaul transmission rate and provide a tightupper bound on it. A product code with single parity-check component codes can be described via the tools of a multi-kernel polar code, where the rows of the generator matrix are chosen according to the constraints imposed by the product code construction. Following this observation, successive cancellation decoding of such codes is introduced. In particular, the error probability of single parity-check product codes over binary memoryless symmetric channels under successive cancellation decoding is characterized. A bridge with the analysis of product codes introduced by Elias is also established for the binary erasure channel. Successive cancellation list decoding of single parity-check product codes is then described. For the provided example, simulations over the binary input additive white Gaussian channel show that successive cancellation list decoding outperforms belief propagation decoding applied to the code graph. Finally, the performance of the concatenation of a product code with a high-rate outer code is investigated via distance spectrum analysis. We propose a novel soft-aided iterative decoding algorithm for product codes (PCs). The proposed algorithm, named iterative bounded distance decoding with combined reliability (iBDD-CR), enhances the conventional iterative bounded distance decoding (iBDD) of PCs by exploiting some level of soft information. In particular, iBDD-CR can be seen as a modification of iBDD where the hard decisions of the row and column decoders are made based on a reliability estimate of the BDD outputs. The reliability estimates are derived using extrinsic message passing for generalized low-density-parity check (GLDPC) ensembles, which encompass PCs. We perform a density evolution analysis of iBDD-CR for transmission over the additive white Gaussian noise channel for the GLDPC ensemble. We consider both binary transmission and bit-interleaved coded modulation with quadrature amplitude modulation.We show that iBDD-CR achieves performance gains up to $0.51$ dB compared to iBDD with the same internal decoder data flow. This makes the algorithm an attractive solution for very high-throughput applications such as fiber-optic communications.

The society as a whole, and many vertical sectors in particular, is becoming increasingly digitalized. Machine Type Communication (MTC), encompassing its massive and critical aspects, and ubiquitous wireless connectivity are among the main enablers of such digitization at large. The recently introduced 5G New Radio is natively designed to support both aspects of MTC to promote the digital transformation of the society. However, it is evident that some of the more demanding requirements cannot be fully supported by 5G networks. Alongside, further development of the society towards 2030 will give rise to new and more stringent requirements on wireless connectivity in general, and MTC in particular. Driven by the societal trends towards 2030, the next generation (6G) will be an agile and efficient convergent network serving a set of diverse service classes and a wide range of key performance indicators (KPI). A new protograph-based framework for message passing (MP) decoding of low density parity-check (LDPC) codes with Hamming weight amplifiers (HWAs), which are used e.g. in the NIST post-quantum crypto candidate LEDAcrypt, is proposed. The scheme exploits the correlations in the error patterns introduced by the HWA using a turbo-like decoding approach where messages between the decoders for the outer code given by the HWA and the inner LDPC code are exchanged. Decoding thresholds for the proposed scheme are computed using density evolution (DE) analysis for belief propagation (BP) and ternary message passing (TMP) decoding and compared to existing decoding approaches. The proposed scheme improves upon the basic approach of decoding LDPC code from the amplified error and has a similar performance as decoding the corresponding moderate-density parity-check (MDPC) code but with a significantly lower computational complexity.

The performance of short polar codes under successive cancellation (SC) and SC list (SCL) decoding is analyzed for the case where the decoder messages are coarsely quantized. This setting is of particular interest for applications requiring low-complexity energy-efficient transceivers (e.g., internet-of-things or wireless sensor networks). We focus on the extreme case where the decoder messages are quantized with 3 levels. We show how under SCL decoding quantized log-likelihood ratios lead to a large inaccuracy in the calculation of path metrics, resulting in considerable performance losses with respect to an unquantized SCL decoder. We then introduce two novel techniques which improve the performance of SCL decoding with coarse quantization. The first technique consists of a modification of the final decision step of SCL decoding, where the selected codeword is the one maximizing the maximum-likelihood decoding metric within the final list. The second technique relies on statistical knowledge about the reliability of the bit estimates, obtained through a suitably modified density evolution analysis, to improve the list construction phase, yielding a higher probability of having the transmitted codeword in the list. The effectiveness of the two techniques is demonstrated through simulations.

The performance and the decoding complexity of a novel coding scheme based on the concatenation of maximum distance separable (MDS) codes and linear random fountain codes are investigated. Differently from Raptor codes (which are based on a serial concatenation of a high-rate outer block code and an inner Luby-transform code), the proposed coding scheme can be seen as a parallel concatenation of a MDS code and a linear random fountain code, both operating on the same finite field. Upper and lower bounds on the decoding failure probability under maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding are developed. It is shown how, for example, the concatenation of a $(15,10)$ Reed-Solomon (RS) code and a linear random fountain code over a finite field of order $16$, $\mathbb {F}_{16}$, brings to a decoding failure probability $4$ orders of magnitude lower than the one of a linear random fountain code for the same receiver overhead in a channel with a erasure probability of $\epsilon=5\cdot10^{-2}$. It is illustrated how the performance of the novel scheme approaches that of an idealized fountain code for higher-order fields and moderate erasure probabilities. This letter proposes successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding of product codes with Reed--Muller (RM) component codes. SCL decoding relies on a product code description based on the $2\times 2$ Hadamard kernel, which enables interpreting the code as an RM subcode. The focus is on a class of product codes considered in wireless communication systems, based on single parity-check and extended Hamming component codes. For short product codes, it is shown that SCL decoding with a moderate list size performs as well as (and, sometimes, outperforms) belief propagation (BP) decoding. Furthermore, by concatenating a short product code with a high-rate outer code, SCL decoding outperforms BP decoding by up to $1.4$ dB., Comment: accepted for publication in IEEE Communications Letters

We use density evolution to optimize the parameters of binary product codes (PCs) decoded based on the recently introduced iterative bounded distance decoding with scaled reliability. We show that binary PCs with component codes of 3-bit error correcting capability provide the best performance-complexity trade-off.

This work considers the design of short non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over finite fields of order m, for channels with phase noise. In particular, m-ary differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) modulated code symbols are transmitted over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with Wiener phase noise. At the receiver side, non-coherent detection takes place, with the help of a multi-symbol detection algorithm, followed by a non-binary decoding step. Both the detector and decoder operate on a joint factor graph. As a benchmark, finite length bounds and information rate expressions are computed and compared with the codeword error rate (CER) performance, as well as the iterative threshold of the obtained codes. As a result, performance within 1:2 dB from finite-length bounds is obtained, down to a CER of 1e-3.

We present a novel decoding algorithm for q-ary low-density parity-check codes, termed symbol message passing. The proposed algorithm can be seen as a generalization of Gallager B and the binary message passing algorithm by Lechner et al. to q-ary codes. We derive density evolution equations for the q-ary symmetric channel, compute thresholds for a number of regular low-density parity-check code ensembles, and verify those by Monte Carlo simulations of long channel codes. Wireless random access protocols are attracting a revived research interest as a simple yet effective solution for machine-type communications. In the quest to improve reliability and spectral efficiency of such schemes, the use of multiple receivers has recently emerged as a promising option. We study the potential of this approach considering a population of users that transmit data packets following a simple slotted ALOHA policy to a set of non-cooperative receivers or relays (uplink phase). These, in turn, independently forward - part of - what decoded towards a collecting sink (downlink phase). For an on-off fading channel model, we provide exact expressions for uplink throughput and packet loss rate for an arbitrary number of relays, characterising the benefits of multi-receiver schemes. Moreover, a lower bound on the minimum amount of downlink resources needed to deliver all information collected on the uplink is provided. The bound is proven to be achievable via random linear coding when no constraints in terms of latency are set. We complement our study discussing a family of simple forwarding policies that require no packet-level coding, and optimising their performance based on the amount of available downlink resources. The behaviour of both random linear coding and simplified policies is also characterised when receivers are equipped with finite buffers, revealing non-trivial tradeoffs.

This short paper proposes the use of modern random access for IoT applications in 6G. A short overview of recent advances in uncoordinated medium access is provided, highlighting the gains that can be achieved by leveraging smart protocol design intertwined with advanced signal processing techniques at the receiver. Low complexity decoding algorithms are necessary to meet data rate requirements in excess of 1 Tbps. In this paper, we study one and two bit message passing algorithms for belief propagation decoding of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and analyze them by density evolution. The variable nodes (VNs) exploit soft information from the channel output. To decrease the data flow, the messages exchanged between check nodes (CNs) and VNs are represented by one or two bits. The newly proposed quaternary message passing (QMP) algorithm is compared asymptotically and in finite length simulations to binary message passing (BMP) and ternary message passing (TMP) for spectrally efficient communication with higher-order modulation and probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS). To showcase the potential for high throughput forward error correction, spatially coupled LDPC codes and a target spectral efficiency (SE) of 3 bits/QAM symbol are considered. Gains of about 0.7 dB and 0.1 dB are observed compared to BMP and TMP, respectively. The gap to unquantized belief propagation (BP) decoding is reduced to about 0.75 dB. We propose a novel binary message passing decoding algorithm for product-like codes based on bounded distance decoding (BDD) of the component codes. The algorithm, dubbed iterative BDD with scaled reliability (iBDD-SR), exploits the channel reliabilities and is therefore soft in nature. However, the messages exchanged by the component decoders are binary (hard) messages, which significantly reduces the decoder data flow. The exchanged binary messages are obtained by combining the channel reliability with the BDD decoder output reliabilities, properly conveyed by a scaling factor applied to the BDD decisions. We perform a density evolution analysis for generalized low-density parity-check (GLDPC) code ensembles and spatially coupled GLDPC code ensembles, from which the scaling factors of the iBDD-SR for product and staircase codes, respectively, can be obtained. For the white additive Gaussian noise channel, we show performance gains up to $0.29$ dB and $0.31$ dB for product and staircase codes compared to conventional iterative BDD (iBDD) with the same decoder data flow. A lower bound on the maximum likelihood (ML) decoding error exponent of linear block code ensembles, on the erasure channel, is developed. The lower bound turns to be positive, over an ensemble specific interval of erasure probabilities, when the ensemble weight spectral shape function tends to a negative value as the fractional codeword weight tends to zero. For these ensembles we can therefore lower bound the block-wise ML decoding threshold. Two examples are presented, namely, linear random parity-check codes and fixed-rate Raptor codes with linear random precoders. While for the former a full analytical solution is possible, for the latter we can lower bound the ML decoding threshold on the erasure channel by simply solving a 2 x 2 system of nonlinear equations., Comment: 6 pages

A pilot-assisted transmission (PAT) scheme is proposed for short blocklengths, where the pilots are used only to derive an initial channel estimate for the list construction step. The final decision of the message is obtained by applying a non-coherent decoding metric to the codewords composing the list. This allows one to use very few pilots, thus reducing the channel estimation overhead. The method is applied to an ordered statistics decoder for communication over a Rayleigh block-fading channel. Gains of up to $1.2$ dB as compared to traditional PAT schemes are demonstrated for short codes with QPSK signaling. We propose a binary message passing decoding algorithm for product codes based on generalized minimum distance decoding (GMDD) of the component codes, where the last stage of the GMDD makes a decision based on the Hamming distance metric. The proposed algorithm closes half of the gap between conventional iterative bounded distance decoding (iBDD) and turbo product decoding based on the Chase--Pyndiah algorithm, at the expense of some increase in complexity. The design of block codes for short information blocks (e.g., a thousand or less information bits) is an open research problem that is gaining relevance thanks to emerging applications in wireless communication networks. In this paper, we review some of the most promising code constructions targeting the short block regime, and we compare them with both finite-length performance bounds and classical error-correction coding schemes. The work addresses the use of both binary and high-order modulations over the additive white Gaussian noise channel. We implement a 1-Tb/s 0.63-pJ/bit soft-assisted product decoder in a 28-nm technology. The decoder uses one bit of soft information to improve its net coding gain by 0.2 dB, reaching 10.3-10.4 dB, which is similar to that of more complex hard-decision staircase decoders.

We study the performance of caching schemes based on LT under peeling (iterative) decoding algorithm. We assume that users ask for downloading content to multiple cache-aided transmitters. Transmitters are connected through a backhaul link to a master node while no direct link exists between users and the master node. Each content is fragmented and coded with LT code. Cache placement at each transmitter is optimized such that transmissions over the backhaul link is minimized. We derive a closed form expression for the calculation of the backhaul transmission rate. We compare the performance of a caching scheme based on LT with respect to a caching scheme based on maximum distance separable codes. Finally, we show that caching with \acl{LT} codes behave as good as caching with maximum distance separable codes.

We propose a coded distributed computing scheme based on Raptor codes to address the straggler problem. In particular, we consider a scheme where each server computes intermediate values, referred to as droplets, that are either stored locally or sent over the network. Once enough droplets are collected, the computation can be completed. A ternary message passing (TMP) decoding algorithm for low-density parity-check codes is developed. All messages exchanged between variable and check nodes have a ternary alphabet, and the variable nodes exploit soft information from the channel. A density evolution analysis is developed for unstructured and protograph-based ensembles. For unstructured ensembles the stability condition is derived. Optimized ensembles for TMP decoding show asymptotic gains of up to 0.6 dB with respect to ensembles optimized for binary message passing decoding. Finite length simulations of codes from TMP-optimized ensembles show gains of up to 0.5 dB under TMP compared to protograph-based codes designed for unquantized belief propagation decoding.

A new approach for combining non-binary low-density parity-check (NB-LDPC) codes with higher-order modulation and probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) is presented. Instead of symbol-metric decoding (SMD), a bit-metric decoder (BMD) is used so that matching the field order of the non-binary code to the constellation size is not needed, which increases the flexibility of the coding scheme. In this paper upper and lower bounds on the probability of decoding failure under maximum likelihood decoding are derived for different (nonbinary) Raptor code constructions. In particular four different constructions are considered; (i) the standard Raptor code construction, (ii) a multi-edge type construction, (iii) a construction where the Raptor code is nonbinary but the generator matrix of the LT code has only binary entries, (iv) a combination of (ii) and (iii). The latter construction resembles the one employed by RaptorQ codes, which at the time of writing this article represents the state of the art in fountain codes. We address the use of linear randon fountain codes caching schemes in a heterogeneous satellite network. We consider a system composed of multiple hubs and a geostationary Earth orbit satellite. Coded content is memorized in hubs' caches in order to serve immediately the user requests and reduce the usage of the satellite backhaul link. We derive the analytical expression of the average backhaul rate, as well as a tight upper bound to it with a simple expression. Furthermore, we derive the optimal caching strategy which minimizes the average backhaul rate and compare the performance of the linear random fountain code scheme to that of a scheme using maximum distance separable codes. Our simulation results indicate that the performance obtained using fountain codes is similar to that of maximum distance separable codes.

We study low-complexity iterative decoding algorithms for product codes. We revisit two algorithms recently proposed by the authors based on bounded distance decoding (BDD) of the component codes that improve the performance of conventional iterative BDD (iBDD). We then propose a novel decoding algorithm that is based on generalized minimum distance decoding of the component codes. The proposed algorithm closes over 50% of the performance gap between iBDD and turbo product decoding (TPD) based on the Chase-Pyndiah algorithm. Moreover, the algorithm only leads to a limited increase in complexity with respect to iBDD and has significantly lower complexity than TPD. The studied algorithms are particularly interesting for high-throughput fiber-optic communications.

We propose a modified iterative bounded distance decoding of product codes. The proposed algorithm is based on exchanging hard messages iteratively and exploiting channel reliabilities to make hard decisions at each iteration. Performance improvements up to 0.26 dB are achieved.

A finite length analysis is introduced for irregular repetition slotted ALOHA (IRSA) that enables to accurately estimate its performance in the moderate-to-high packet loss probability regime, i.e., in the so-called waterfall region. The analysis is tailored to the collision channel model, which enables mapping the description of the successive interference cancellation process onto the iterative erasure decoding of low-density parity-check codes. We show how the iterative decoding threshold of tailbiting spatially coupled (SC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensembles can be improved over the binary input additive white Gaussian noise channel by allowing the use of different transmission energies for the codeword bits. We refer to the proposed approach as energy shaping. We focus on the special case where the transmission energy of a bit is selected among two values, and where a contiguous portion of the codeword is transmitted with the largest one. Given these constraints, an optimal energy boosting policy is derived by means of protograph extrinsic information transfer analysis. We show that the threshold of tailbiting SC-LDPC code ensembles can be made close to that of terminated code ensembles while avoiding the rate loss (due to termination). In this paper, ensembles of quasi-cyclic moderate-density parity-check (MDPC) codes based on protographs are introduced and analyzed in the context of a McEliece-like cryptosystem. The proposed ensembles significantly improve the error correction capability of the regular MDPC code ensembles that are currently considered for post-quantum cryptosystems without increasing the public key size. The proposed ensembles are analyzed in the asymptotic setting via density evolution, both under the sum-product algorithm and a low-complexity (error-and-erasure) message passing algorithm. The asymptotic analysis is complemented at finite block lengths by Monte Carlo simulations.
