- Abstract
More than 4 decades have passed since the birth of the first in vitro fertilized baby in 1978. The use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) to overcome infertility has increased steadily with the simultaneous increase in the number of fertility centers in every part of the world. Access to infertility clinics is playing an important role in the treatment of different forms of infertility (like tubal disease, ovarian aging, or ovarian dysfunction). This book captures the state of current and recent advances in assisted reproduction technology in humans and livestock in an easy and comprehensive way for non-experts and learners. 10 chapters cover the biology of reproduction, and male ART methods (sperm retrieval and freezing) and female ART methods (oocyte activation, and cryopreservation), and finally embryo ARTs (assisted hatching and cloning techniques) with simple definitions and explanations. Tips to overcome problems are also presented where appropriate along with references for further reading. This book is a simple primer for students who are involved in courses in embryology or reproductive technologies as part of programs in biology, biotechnology, medicine, and physiology.

- Abstract
Breeds are fascinating entities. They depend on individual breeders for their continuing existence. Although breeders may come and go, each of them is important and has the potential to make positive contributions to the breed. Multiple factors can guarantee breeders long-term successful management. These include biological aspects, consistent market demand, and the important and sometimes politically charged role of breed associations as the main advocates for breeds today. Strategies for success have been detailed in the first and second editions of Managing Breeds for a Secure Future. The third edition explores this further, providing more strategies that can assure long-term survival for breeds of livestock, poultry, and dogs. Managing Breeds for a Secure Future Third Edition is re-organized to flow better, and has additional chapters on specific protocols for maintaining breeds. It also delves more deeply into rescuing rare populations, through both theory and practice. Updates to the new edition include: biological issues, population analysis, pedigree-based analyses, managing a genetic defect, and specific rescue principles and practices.

- Abstract
For animal breeders colour coat genetics is one of the fundamental elements of breeding, along with health and conformation. Breeders need to know about colour coats for showing purposes and where the fibre is used in industry, for example sheep and alpaca wool. The science behind breeding for genetic traits is complex because of dominant and recessive traits. Because animals inherit two alleles for the base coat colour, it is possible that their phenotype, or visual appearance, does not reflect their underlying genotype. This book is a practical guide for breeders on the biology behind colour coats in large animals directing breeders on how to implement breeding strategies to achieve desired results.

- Abstract
Prenatal life is the period of maximal development in animals, and it is well recognised that factors that alter development can have profound effects on the embryonic, fetal and postnatal animal. Scientists involved in research on livestock productivity have for decades studied postnatal consequences of fetal development on productivity. Recently, however, there has been a surge in interest in how to manage prenatal development to enhance livestock health and productivity. This has occurred largely due to the studies that show human health in later life can be influenced by events during prenatal life, and establishment of the Fetal Origins and the Thrifty Phenotype Hypotheses. This book, Managing the Prenatal Environment to Enhance Livestock Productivity reviews phenotypic consequences of prenatal development, and provides details of mechanisms that underpin these effects in ruminants, pigs and poultry. The chapters have been divided into three parts: Quantification of prenatal effects on postnatal productivity, mechanistic bases of postnatal consequences of prenatal development and regulators of fetal and neonatal nutrient supply. Managing the Prenatal Environment to Enhance Livestock Productivity is a reference from which future research to improve the level of understanding and capacity to enhance productivity, health and efficiency of livestock in developing and developed countries will evolve. It is particularly timely given the development of molecular technologies that are providing new insight into regulation and consequences of growth and development of the embryo, fetus and neonate.

- Abstract
Nowadays extensive livestock farming is facing a complex socio-economic context. The coexistence between extensive production and the conservation of biodiversity has raised tensions between livestock farmers and the public administration of the Alt Pirineu Natural Park (PNAP). A clear example is the reintroduction of the brown bear (Ursus arctos), in 1996, due to a LIFE program of the European Union deployed by the French government, with the support of the Catalan government. As a result of the reintroduction there has been some discomfort among some members of the primary sector due to the damage caused by the attacks, especially to sheep. In addition, it is assumed that the presence of large predators such as bears can cause increased vigilance in cattle (Bos taurus), penalizing the time spent on other behaviours, such as grazing, and can indirectly compromise the productive performance of herds. Vigilance is an anti-predator behaviour often associated with the presence of predators but may be due to other causes. The study was carried out from spring to winter of 2021 in the PNAP, where there is currently presence of brown bears, and in the Vall d'en Bas, where there is no presence of bears (control area). This study aims to determine whether vigilance 1) can reduce maintenance behaviour (e.g., grazing, ruminating and resting), 2) is produced or increased by the presence of bears, 3) is related to the size of the herd, 4) can vary according to the position of the animal within the herd and 5) is affected by the type of habitat. Non-manipulative observational methodologies focal and scan were used to collect the behavioural data of herds in the field. Cattle exhibited a vigilant behaviour the 10 ± 1.0% of the time. No significant differences (P = 0.47) were found in the vigilance of individuals between the PNAP and the control area. There were also no differences in vigilance based on herd size (P = 0.99) or the position of the individual within-herd (P = 0.98)., La ramaderia extensiva s’enfronta actualment a un context socieconòmic complex. There were also no differences in vigilance based on herd size (P = 0.99) or the position of the individual within-herd (P = 0.98). A negative correlation was observed between the time spent on scanning and grazing (r = -0.50; P < 0.05), stronger than in other maintenance behaviours. Individuals were found to increase vigilance in areas travelled by humans and other animals (e.g., pathway, trail) compared to areas of forest or scrub. Cattle exhibited vigilance behaviour, but it has not been related to the presence of bears, the size of the herd, the position or the type of habitat. Therefore, vigilance cannot be associated with predation risk but could be caused by social interactions or other disturbances. In conclusion, according to the behavioural data collected, there are no signs that the reintroduction of the brown bear causes a state of alertness or a perception of danger in extensive cattle of the Pyrenees that entails a decrease in grazing behaviour and, therefore, could cause a reduction in cattle potential productive performance. - Abstract
Reproduction could be considered the most important production trait on a cow-calf operation. Economic outputs are sustained when cattle rebreed and calve every year in a timely manner. However, when cattle are unable to rebreed efficiently, profits may decrease for producers. It is well known that heat stress can negatively impact reproduction in cattle (Jordan, 2003). The Intermountain West has been impacted by drought and increasing temperatures, both of which can impact reproduction rates in cattle. This fact sheet helps producers understand the consequences of heat stress on cattle reproduction and how they can manage reproduction during increasing temperatures.

- Abstract
In the past half century great progress has been made in the reproductive management of farm animals, both mammals and birds. This book aims to review developments and indicate which reproductive technologies can be used commercially or in research. It begins by discussing artificial insemination and how this has recently been refined in semen sexing technology. Embryo transfer, in vitro embryo production technology and the control of oestrus and ovulation are then reviewed. Subsequent chapters consider the control of postpartum ovarian activity, seasonal breeding, multiple births and litter size, pregnancy testing, parturition, and the onset of puberty. The author then describes more recent developments in cloning and the production of transgenic animals, before a final chapter on suppressing reproductive activity.
