Montbau es va pensar com una ciutat jardí, amb tots els elements necessaris per fer del barri una comunitat. En aquest article posem en valor el seu patrimoni verd per poder-lo protegir. Un conjunt de jardins projectats i construïts pels arquitectes jardiners del Moviment Modern Lluís Riudor i Joaquim Maria Casamor.

Descripció del recurs: 1 abril 2019 Fa dos anys vam establir una col·laboració entre l’Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona i l’Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol de Badalona. L’objectiu de la col·laboració era donar contingut a un taller que havia de completar la formació de joves arquitectes a punt de graduar-se. El taller “Arquitectura i complexitat” semblava una bona ocasió per a l’Hospital de nodrir-se d’idees i reflexions sobre les seves mancances arquitectòniques i garantia un seguit d’emocions fortes els estudiants i docents que buscaven un cas d’estudi urbanístic i arquitectònic complex i de difícil abordatge. L’experiència es resumeix en la publicació que teniu davant els vostres ulls. Els estudiants ja són arquitectes i els problemes del Campus Can Ruti, sobretot de l’Hospital, segueixen condicionant el nostre dia a dia i el de milers de persones que diàriament utilitzen el nostre servei. Malgrat tot, com veureu si llegiu les següents pàgines, tots hem tret valuosos aprenentatges d’aquest treball conjunt. Fins i tot hem aconseguit que els arquitectes pensin una mica com a metges i escriguin aquesta memòria com si es tractes d’un manual de medicina. En ella hi ha remeis molt diversos pels mals del nostre hospital i del nostre campus. Alguns d’ells m’atreviria a dir que originals i prometedors, si algun dia es poden dur a la pràctica. Amb tot, el major benefici per metges i arquitectes ha estat el d’haver de pensar diferent. Hem contaminat les nostres maneres de fer i d’abordar els problemes. Hem entès la importància de la salut per a l’arquitectura i a la inversa, de l’arquitectura com a condicionant de la salut de les persones.

Aquest treball ha estat realitzat en el marc de l’Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya i forma part de les activitats del Grup de recerca REARQ (Rehabilitació i Restauració Arquitectònic), amb la col·laboració de membres del Grup de Recerca CERCLE (Cercle d’Arquitectura) Finançament a càrrec de l’Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca (AGAUR) de la Generalitat de Catalunya al Grup de recerca REARQ (2014-SGR-440) Descripció del recurs: 26 de juliol de 2017 Text en català i castellà Aquesta publicació pretén ser una recopilació que permeti conèixer i valorar el què s’ha fet i el com s’ha fet en el patrimoni arquitectònic que ens va deixar el segle XX. Doncs si bé a mesura que passen els anys els requeriments i les exigències establertes sobre els sistemes i els processos de l’obra construïda han canviat substancialment, certs valors i una idea estètica sobre la modernitat ens acompanyen i dificulten una visió distanciada de quins són els seus atributs i com aquests atributs es poden mantenir prolongant la vida útil dels edificis. La intenció del que s’exposa en aquest seguit de casos no serà llavors el de jutjar el valor d’unes obres ni tampoc el de les seves intervencions, sinó el d’apropar la gran diversitat de maneres d’afrontar-les i la complexitat dels factors amb els que es troben els projectistes alhora d’intervenir en el patrimoni modern. Sobretot el que es pretén amb aquest document és mostrar la necessitat de fer ajustos i expandir les maneres de conèixer, avaluar i actuar en el patrimoni modern per part de tots els agents que intervenen: des de l’usuari, les administracions, constructors i arquitectes. Tot això, per tal de prendre consciencia d’aquestes obres més enllà de l’objecte i gaudir de les qualitats, valors i idees que les fan ésser considerades com a part del nostre patrimoni històric i cultural. Un patrimoni al mateix temps útil i eficaç. Esta publicación pretende ser una recopilación que permita conocer y valorar lo que se ha hecho y como se ha hecho en el patrimonio arquitectónico que nos dejó el siglo XX. Pues si bien a medida que pasan los años los requisitos y las exigencias establecidas sobre los sistemas y los procesos de la obra construida han cambiado substancialmente, ciertos valores y una idea estética sobre la modernidad nos acompañan y dificultan una visión distanciada de cuáles son sus atributos y como estos atributos se pueden mantener prolongando la vida útil de los edificios. La intención de lo que se expone en este conjunto de casos no será entonces el de juzgar el valor de unes obras ni tampoco el de sus intervenciones, sino el de acercar la gran diversidad de maneras de afrontarlas y la complejidad de los factores que es preciso tener presente cuando se requiere intervenir en el patrimonio moderno. Lo que es pretende, sobre todo, con este documento es mostrar la necesidad de hacer ajustes y expandir las formas de conocer, evaluar y actuar en el patrimonio moderno por parte de todos los agentes que intervienen: desde el usuario, las administraciones, constructores y arquitectos. Todo ello, con motivo de tomar consciencia de estas obras más allá del objeto y disfrutar de las cualidades, valores y ideas que las hacen ser consideradas como parte de nuestro patrimonio histórico y cultural. Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona Descripció del recurs: 12 de juny de 2017 El llibre recull els projectes del primer curs del Taller PFC del MArqEtsaB, així com els programes docents de les diferents intensificacions i textos complementaris.

Le Corbusier va visitar Barcelona el 1928 i va fer un croquis de les façanes posteriors de l’Eixample. La revista del GATCPAC també fa un elogi de les “façanes de pati” de les cases de l’Eixample de Barcelona, de les quals diu que són perfectament modernes sense pretendre-ho. Aquestes façanes són estructures de vidre i fosa que suporten tot un complex sistema de proteccions solars: dobles façanes, terrasses, galeries, persianes enrotllables, porticons graduables i ventilació, molta ventilació. Semblen com petits antecedents dels gratacels de vidre i acer camufl ats entre les cases de l’Eixample. Francesc Mitjans havia estat soci estudiant del GATCPAC durant la Segona República. La seva primera obra va ser la casa Oller, un edifi ci d’habitatges on va situar la façana posterior de l’Eixample a la façana principal de l’edifi ci, invertint tota la tradició constructiva del segle XIX. Mitjans posava en primer terme una imatge molt més “funcional” i “moderna” i encetava una nova tradició de l’arquitectura moderna mediterrània. El propi Mitjans explica que l’edifi ci va causar un cert impacte entre els joves arquitectes de l’època, que veien com després la guerra es tornaven a posar en pràctica les teories del GATCPAC. Le Corbusier visited Barcelona in 1928 and made a sketch of the rear facades of the Eixample. The magazine of the GATCPAC makes an eulogy of the “courtyard façades” of the Eixample’s houses in Barcelona, which says they are perfectly modern unintentionally. These façades are glass and cast structures that support a complex system of sun protections: double façades, terraces, galleries, blinds, adjustable shutters and ventilation, a lot of ventilation. They look like little backgrounds of the glass and steel skyscrapers camoufl aged between the Eixample’s houses. Francesc Mitjans had been a student partner of the GATCPAC during the Second Republic. His fi rst job was the Oller house, an apartment building where he stood the rear façade of the Eixample in the front façade of the building, inverting the whole building tradition of the nineteenth century. Mitjans put in the foreground an image much more “functional” and “modern”, and started a new tradition of Mediterranean modern architecture. Mitjans himself says that the building caused some impact among young architects of the time, who saw how after the war the GATCPAC theories were put back into practice

In this thesis we discover a model of city developed jointly by the architect Mies van der Rohe and the city planner Ludwig Hilberseimer, which we have called the Metropolis as a Garden City. This name comes from a sketch by Hilberseimer in 1927, where we can see how he wanted to incorporate the architectural prototype of the Weissenhof colony in his city planning schemes. The Metropolis as a Garden City is a model of an ecological, sustainable, and socially just city, which remained completely hidden because of the disciplinary division their own authors established. To reconstruct it, we have decided to establish a double look analyzing the architecture of Mies through the eyes of Hilberseimer, and the city planning of Hilberseimer through the eyes of Mies. In the first part, we analyze the historical and cultural context where the Metropolis as a Garden City is produced, that is to say, its SUPERSTRUCTURE. From the analysis of a text by Mies and another by Hilberseimer, we discover that the antecedents of the Metropolis as a Garden City are in the theory of the Linear City by Arturo Soria (1882), and in the theory of the Garden Cities by Ebenezer Howard (1898). In the second part, we analyze the city planning model of the Metropolis as a Garden City. We arrive to the conclusion that the great contribution of Hilberseimer is produced in the field of the INFRASTRUCTURES, and we create the hypothesis that the first city planning models by Hilberseimer are applications of the theory of the Linear City. The next step was to introduce the variable of the landscape through the architectural model of the Weissenhof. In the third part, we analyze the transformation of the urban space from the architecture, which Mies calls STRUCTURES. Mies propose to redefine the texture of the city from the concept of mixed height, that is to say, mixing the architecture of the city and the architecture of the suburb. We create the hypothesis that this mixture is an application of the theory of the Garden Cities. The first example is the Weissenhof colony. If we bear in mind the refusal which the city planning of Le Corbusier suffered after the Second World War; the necessity to “deconstruct” the political and philosophical systems in the 60s and 70s; and the serious social and environmental pathologies we suffer now, maybe we would appraise the possibility to put the Metropolis as a Garden City in practice, and to convert it in a framework to our own generation and to the future generations, En aquesta tesi es descobreix un model de ciutat desenvolupat conjuntament per l'arquitecte Mies van der Rohe i l'urbanista Ludwig Hilberseimer, el que hem anomenat la metròpoli com la Ciutat Jardí. Aquest nom prové d'un esbós de Hilberseimer el 1927, en el qual podem veure com es volia incorporar el prototip arquitectònic de la colònia Weissenhof en els seus esquemes de planificació de la ciutat. La Metròpoli com Ciutat Jardi és un model d'una ciutat ecològica, sostenible i socialment justa, que va quedar completament ocult a causa de la divisió disciplinària seus propis autors van establir. Per reconstruir-lo, hem decidit establir una doble mirada analitzar l'arquitectura de Mies a través dels ulls de Hilberseimer, i la planificació de la ciutat de Hilberseimer a través dels ulls de Mies . A la primera part, s'analitza el context històric i cultural en què es produeix la metròpoli com a ciutat jardí, és a dir, la seva superestructura. A partir de l'anàlisi d'un text de Mies i un altre per Hilberseimer, vam descobrir que els antecedents de la Metròpoli com Garden City estan en la teoria de la Ciutat Lineal d'Arturo Soria ( 1882 ), i en la teoria de les Ciutats Jardí d'Ebenezer Howard ( 1898 ). A la segona part , s'analitza el model de planificació de la ciutat de la metròpoli com la Ciutat Jardí. Arribem a la conclusió que la gran aportació de Hilberseimer es produeix en el camp de les infraestructures, i vam crear la hipòtesi que els primers models de planificació de la ciutat per Hilberseimer són aplicacions de la teoria de la Ciutat Lineal. El següent pas va ser la introducció de la variable del paisatge a través del model arquitectònic de la Weissenhof. A la tercera part, s'analitza la transformació de l'espai urbà de l'arquitectura, que Mies diu ESTRUCTURES. Mies proposa redefinir la textura de la ciutat des del concepte d'altura mixt, és a dir, la barreja de l'arquitectura de la ciutat i l'arquitectura del barri. Creem la hipòtesi que aquesta barreja és una aplicació de la teoria de les ciutats - jardí. El primer exemple és la colònia Weissenhof . Si tenim en compte la negativa que la planificació de la ciutat de Le Corbusier va patir després de la Segona Guerra Mundial, la necessitat de "deconstruir" els sistemes polítics i filosòfics en els anys 60 i 70 , i les greus patologies socials i ambientals que patim ara, potser podríem avaluar la possibilitat de posar la metròpoli com ciutat jardí a la pràctica, i per convertir-lo en un marc per a la nostra generació i per a les generacions futures, En esta tesis se descubre un modelo de ciudad desarrollado conjuntamente por el arquitecto Mies van der Rohe y el urbanista Ludwig Hilberseimer, lo que hemos llamado la metrópoli como la Ciudad Jardín. Este nombre proviene de un boceto de Hilberseimer en 1927, en el que podemos ver cómo quería incorporar el prototipo arquitectónico de la colonia Weissenhof en sus esquemas de planificación de la ciudad. La metrópolis como ciudad jardin es un modelo de una ciudad ecológica, sustentable y socialmente justa, que quedó completamente oculto debido a la división disciplinaria sus propios autores establecieron. This thesis aims to generate a new vision for the park division and introduce a new model of parks called Urban Park. Urban Park should follow specific features and unique characteristics that made it suitable to be integrated into any urban fabric. Therefore, a study on the available groups of parks helps the thesis to compare their characteristics and facilities and formulate a complex of design principles for urban Park. It helps the study to go through formulating a flexible architectural model for Urban Park that can respond to the current and future needs of the inhabitant. This thesis is composed of three chapters that generally are studying on three periods in park design as former time, modern time, and the present time. The first chapter based on bibliographical research leads the thesis to study the concept of paradise and relates it to gardens. Historiography and itinerary review clarifies that the first signs of the park from the current vision date back to 500BC in the Persian Empire that created gardens with the concept of paradise. It clarifies that those gardens were royal and private gardens that were open to the public sporadically in local and national festivals, events, and holidays. The characteristics and elements of the Persian paradises made them a reference for the western world for centuries. Comparing and analyzing Persian gardens helped the thesis to find important and structural elements of these parks that served to illuminate those other characteristics of the contemporary urban park. The second chapter refers to modern times and begins with the first public park that broke the boundaries of the symmetrical design that had been implemented by the Persian garden model and offers a new attitude to park design. A comparison of the case studies shows the evolution of public parks to urban parks. Study and comparison of the plan of Randel for Manhattan and the plan of Cerdà for Barcelona clarify fundamental elements of the urban renewal of these two urban fabric. Moreover, analyzing the evolution of greenery in Barcelona and Manhattan, and also different techniques of redrawing Central Park and urban blocks of both cities served as fundamental references to clarify the idea of what an urban park is. Besides, it also helps the thesis to differentiate an Urban Park from a green park and enlighten the characteristics of the contemporary Urban Parks. The third and final chapter studies the present moment and tries to introduce a green pattern for the built cities. Therefore, it took as reference the two urban models of Kevin Lynch as Star model and Galaxy model. According to the purpose of the thesis and also based on the information obtained from analyzing Kevin Lynch's selected models the thesis introduced the Star-Galaxy model. The new model is containing characteristics that are the basis of the contemporary Urban Park model. Moreover, this chapter clarifies the characteristics of the modern metropolis with its relation to urban nature and select Barcelona as a reference. This chapter opens a new vision of Barcelona city with the maximum expression of the relationship between the urban fabric of metropolises and nature. It explains the characteristics of the new system of urban greenery and introduced the new Urban Park of the Plaça de Les Glòries. At the end of this tour of the parks from the Persian era to the present day transferring all the data coming out from research methodologies into a theory had been done. It can be purposed that the model being implemented in Barcelona urban fabric can be considered as a contemporary model for Urban Parks. It opens a vision to the new generation of urban greenery system and can be considered as a reference for further interventions in metropolises. Esta tesis aspira a generar una nueva visión dentro de las características de los parques introduciendo un nuevo concepto llamada Parque Urbano. El Parque Urbano tiene unos rasgos característicos y definidos que lo hacen adecuado a estar integrado en cualquier tejido urbano. Por lo que, un estudio de un significativo grupo de parques ha permitido comparar tanto las características de dichos parques como así mismo sus instalaciones y servicios para poder poder formular unos principios de diseño para un parque urbano. Ayuda al estudio el recorrer la formulación de un modelo flexible para un Parque Urbano que pueda responder a las actuales y futuras necesidades de los habitantes. Esta tesis está compuesta por tres capítulos que principalmente estudia tres periodos en el diseño del parque: el tiempo pasado, el tiempo moderno y el tiempo contemporáneo. El primer capítulo está basado en una investigación bibliográfica que conduce la tesis a estudiar el concepto de Paraíso y relacionarlos con los jardines. Un itinerario historiográfico clarifica que los primeros indicios de lo que es un parque se remontan al año 500 AC en el Imperio Persa donde se crearon jardines unidos al concepto de paraíso. Se clarifica que esos jardines eran jardines reales y privados que eran abiertos al público solo esporádicamente cuando se realizaban festivales locales o nacionales y en las vacaciones. Las características y elementos de los paraísos persas hicieron de ellos un referente para el mundo occidental durante siglos. Comparando y analizando los jardines persas la tesis encontró importantes y estructurales elementos en estos jardines y parques que sirvieron para iluminar otras características del para urbano contemporáneo. El segundo capítulo se refiere al periodo moderno y se inicia con el primer parque público que rompió los límites del diseño simétrico que hasta entonces había sido implementado hasta entonces por el modelo del jardín persa y que ofrecía una nueva actitud al diseño de los parques. Una comparación de los casos de estudio muestra la evolución de los parques públicos en parques urbanos. El estudio y la comparación del plan de Randel para Manhattan y plan para Barcelona de Cerdá clarifican los elementos fundamentales para la renovación de estos dos tejidos urbanos. Además, analizando la evolución de la vegetación en Barcelona y Manhattan, y también diversas técnicas de redibujo de Central Park y edificios de ambas ciudades sirvió como referencias fundamentales para clarificar la idea qué es un parque urbano y explicar las características del parque urbano contemporáneo. El tercer y último capítulo estudia el momento presente y trata de introducir un patrón verde para las ciudades. Por esto se tomaron como referencia los dos modelos de Kevin Lynch como el modelo Star y el modelo Galaxy. De acuerdo al propósito de la tesis y también de la información obtenida del análisis de los modelos seleccionados de Lynch, Star y Galaxy. El nuevo modelo contiene características que son la base del parque urbano contemporáneo. Además, este capítulo clarifica las características de la metrópolis moderna y su relación con la naturaleza urbana seleccionando Barcelona como referencia. Este capítulo abre una nueva visión de la ciudad de Barcelona en la que se encuentra la máxima expresión entre el tejido urbano construido y la naturaleza. Explica las características del nuevo sistema de la vegetación urbana a través del nuevo Parque Urbano de la Plaza de Las Glorias. Al final de este tour desde la era Persa a los días presentes, transfiriendo toda la información que va de la investigación de metodologías a las teorías de hoy. El modelo implementado en el tejido urbano de Barcelona puede ser considerado como un modelo contemporáneo de referencia para un parque urbano. Treball Final del Màster universitari en Estudis Avançats en Arquitectura-BarcelonaArch (MBArch). The Contemporary Project Transportation systems are one of the most essential structures of cities, which, with developments and expansions, have gradually become barriers in cities. In the aspect of development, transportation is the obvious element of barriers, such as railroads and trans-stations. Transportation systems also have a strong presence in urban areas which brings a big impact on natural landscapes. Railways are able to generate fractures and interruptions of the urban fabric, which alters the development of public capacities. The strategy to fix these issues is to reconnect the fractures and interruptions in cities. We are planning carefully the elements which must be put into the barrier in order to heal the fractures and interruptions while having the opportunities to find some potential areas for developing into the city's public spaces. Transportation used to be the primary topic for discussions with urban developers, but now Social activity become the center of discussions. Barcelona is a model of urban planning. Both the development of transportation and the design of city spaces are very prominent and impressive in Barcelona. The goal of this research is to reconnect the interactions between Barcelona and L'Hospitalet on a large urban scale and to use the spatial barriers which were cut by the railways as a basis for improvements. The idea is to use a gentle approach with tinyscale urban design in order to change the railroads and the surrounding areas. The elevated gardens of Rambla de Santa are the perfect material for this research. The original concept of this plan is to form a green linear connecting axis from the mountain to the sea, along with other green public spaces. Rambla de Santa is considered an antecedent and the initial catalyst for this proposal. A comprehensive study is conducted in this context, covering the area between Sants station and L'Hospitalet station. This study is focused on how to propose the solution of reconnecting public spaces and improving the community's environment on both sides of the railways from Barcelona to the L'Hospitalet de Llobregat neighborhood. In conclusion, this project is included an exploration of the interpretation of public space interventions, with a particular focus on how to reconnect the barriers in the city.

La present tesi explora el concepte d'espai públic i com es veu afectat per l'evolució històrica de la ciutat, com pot crear situacions i ser un punt de vida en el teixit de la ciutat. A més, la percepció de la història i la identitat arquitectònica així com el seu respecte són conceptes que s'exploren en aquesta tesi, amb el cas d'estudi de la plaça Riga Feraiou a la ciutat de Volos, Grècia. El valor històric i arquitectònic de la plaça, així com la seva ubicació dins la ciutat i el seu estat actual són criteris clau per a aquesta selecció i exploració de les possibilitats espacials que es poden plantejar a través del seu redisseny i regeneració. La presente tesis explora el concepto de espacio público y cómo se ve afectado por la evolución histórica de la ciudad, cómo puede crear situaciones y ser un punto vivo en el tejido de la ciudad. Además, la percepción de la historia y la identidad arquitectónica, así como su respeto, son conceptos que se exploran en esta tesis, con el caso de estudio de la plaza Riga Feraiou en la ciudad de Volos, Grecia. Furthermore, the perception of history and architectural identity as well as its respect are concepts that are explored in this thesis, with the study case of Riga Feraiou Square in the city of Volos, Greece. The historical and architectural value of the square, as well as its location within the city along with its current condition are key criteria for this selection and exploration of the spatial possibilities that can arise through its redesign and regeneration.

The aim is to encourage socio-cultural engagement and strengthen identity through the social re-appropriation of these ignored urban traces. The proposal seeks to raise awareness about the city's cultural and urban heritage and promote controlled expansion - appropriate building height, materials, and spatial quality by incorporating educational institutions and social condensers that blend harmoniously with the surrounding environment. The concept revolves around the use of traditional carpet patterns as pavement - carpetscape, linking the social condensers and creating a sense of belonging and attachment to public spaces. The first social condenser, a trade and training center, is designed to revive the spirit of the former Alexander Nevsky Cathedral site, once a vibrant multicultural hub for trade routes. The complex acts as a hub for community interaction, cultural exchange, and learning about carpets and their historical significance. The second one transforms the former stock market area into a library and amphitheater, evoking the past functions. The third social condenser is located in the former Sovietski residential district, which was gentrified and transformed into a park, leaving a vacant area adjacent to Old Baku. This research recounts the crisis of natural sources whereby the catenary was implemented. Specifically, it is about the phenomenon of “wine cathedrals”; a set of cellars that came from the cooperation between the Catalan wine society in the early 20th century. In response to the crisis, the implementation of the “balanced arch” became a functional, economic and aesthetic solution. But do these arches truly follow a catenary curve? Oftentimes, the analysis of these geometries requires sophisticated mathematical calculus. Therefore, during the experimental part, this question is approached through parametric modeling, a more suitable language for today’s architecture. To sum up, this research aims to elucidate how the catenary curve is applied in a traditional construction system, being analysed with up-to-date tools.

The aim of this thesis is the elucidation of the concept of architectural recycling as an environmentally sustainable alternative to demolition and preservation. More precisely, the research aim relates to the redefinition of recycling design principles in the context of the sustainable architectural design. The process of architectural recycling was placed in the context of a sustainable architectural design, as the global concept of sustainable development is imposed as a general context for all building related questions in the last few decades. Industrial architecture is the most appropriate type of architecture for the research on architectural recycling due to its physical characteristics, i.e. large flexible spaces with great adaptability potential. The focus of this research is on the exploration and redefinition of the recycling design principles. More precisely, the focus is on the creation of the so-called 'recycling model', consisting of three redefined recycling design principles, which stem from the analogy between the domains of biology and architecture. The analogy was conducted in a systematic manner, applying the set of criteria which refer to structure, material, form and spatial organisation, i.e. their relationship between both existing building and new intervention. The general research hypothesis refers to the advantages of the architectural recycling over demolition and preservation, seen as the most frequently applied methods of dealing with the existing building stock. This assumption is based on the view that processes of demolition and replacement simply contribute to the endless circle of production, consumption and waste, given that the building sector constitutes one of the biggest waste streams produced in Europe, and is unquestionably the biggest polluter. On the other hand, preservation persists in maintaining status quo and prevents the building to adapt to changing condition through alterations and change of use. A systematic review of the concepts of preservation, restoration, destruction and sustainable design, is presented based on the sources by John Ruskin, William Morris, Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and Rem Koolhaas, respectively. The analysis enabled the elucidation of the concept of architectural recycling as preservation through change: in the context of a sustainable architectural design. The second hypothesis refers to the adequacy of biological analogies for the definition of the recycling design principles. lt is assumed that the biological concept of symbiosis is the most adequate one for the definition of the possible relationships between the original industrial building and the new intervention. From the concept of symbiosis stem three redefined design principles of recycling, namely: commensalism, mutualism, and parasitism. The final research hypothesis refers to the relationship between the physical characteristic of an underused industrial building and the most environmentally sustainable design principle for its recycling. lt is assumed that in order for the recycling intervention to produce least environmental damage, the original building should be exploited to a high degree. Hence, it is assumed that the election of the most environmentally sustainable recycling design principle depends on the current condition of the existing industrial building. The value of the 'recycling model' (consisting of three redefined recycling design principles) is seen in its multidisciplinary character and its systematic approach to the topic of recycling architecture, i.e. the principles embedded in this model relate to the aspects of structure, material, form and spatial organization. The birth of railroad transportation became an evolution in transportation history, which was followed by the appearance of railway stations which evolved from simple cottages to cathedrals and palaces. Due to their “node” and “place” characters, station buildings became a convergence place of various social classes during history until the fall of railroad transportation in mid of 20th century and the abandonment of railway stations. On the contrary, stations, rather than being places keeping people away, have a very powerful potential to be hedonistic public spaces in contemporary cities through the five qualities that station buildings have. Thus, the research examines deeply three case studies that follow different strategies for the readaptation of abandoned 19th-century stations. Atocha Railway Station has been extended linearly behind the former station, and the historical building is used as a public space amidst the tropical garden. Railroads in Orsay Station have been moved laterally under the ground level, and the former station transformed into a museum which is a contemporary public space. The last case study, which is proposed by the author in Haydarpasa Railway Station, creates a new centrality by detaching the station terminal from the historical building. The former station is functioned as a cultural center, while the public space between the old and new station becomes a convergence place. Since railroad transportation is the strongest candidate to be the main actor of green and sustainable transportation in the near future, most 19th-century station buildings would gain importance to be the central point of dense transportation traffic. They are located and acquire an invisible character through integration into the environment, which means that we can maintain a stable state and a traceable and sustainable evolution of public space over a long period through restained, minimal, rational, and humble interventions. In terms of innovativeness, this paper provides an appropriate critique and rethinking of the evolution of typologies and the relationship between typologies and urban public space. In terms of locality, this paper proposes a specific way to apply typologies that originated in Western urban contexts to Eastern urban public space, taking a Chinese city, Quanzhou, as an example to add Award-winning

Since its second foundation at the end of the 16th century, the urban fabric of the city of Buenos Aires has been organized as an orthogonal regular grid, struc- tured by 100m x 100m blocks. With the growth of the city in the 20th century, as well as its increasing density, every block in the city was divided into a regular number of plots each 8.66m wide, with a unique lot shape: Narrow and deep. Over time, the city has been molded by its demography and urban regulations. However, in December 2001 the most dramatic and deep-seated crisis in Argen- tina’s history erupted and gave place to what became known as “El Corralito”. This crisis has had a huge impact on the social fabric of the city and has led to a housing deficit that lasts until these days. This thesis develops a strategy that would allow the city to densify and solve its housing crisis. A strategy that proposes to use the fixed width of the plots of Buenos Aires to deploy in its layout an Absolute Architecture. To this end, each of the articles that make up this thesis will delve into the idio- syncrasy, physiognomy, and architecture of Buenos Aires in an attempt to reveal its essence, an essence that will be the material from which to imagine the con- temporary city.

Màster Universitari en Estudis Avançats en Arquitectura-Barcelona: The Contemporary Project La tendencia mundial hacia la disminución de la presencia del automóvil privado dentro de los centros históricos ha permitido cuestionar el excesivo espacio urbano que se le ha entregado al tráfico motorizado y cómo este se ha visto deteriorado. La inminente expulsión del automóvil de los centros urbanos detonará, por una parte, una resignificación y reapropiación del peatón en el espacio vial, y por otra, un proceso de obsolescencia funcional en infraestructuras cuyo rol estaba directamente relacionado a la presencia del automóvil en la ciudad: los edificios de estacionamientos. Tal condición, abre interrogantes sobre cuál será el futuro de dichas estructuras; ¿habrá que demolerlas, hacer tabula rasa y empezar desde cero en su espacio urbano, asumiendo el gasto económico y ambiental que ello significa?, o ¿podrán ser repensadas, reutilizadas y adaptadas a un nuevo rol urbano como soporte de nuevos usos? En este contexto, y como respuesta a los escenarios que plantea la ciudad contemporánea, donde los cambios en las dinámicas de habitar y los sistemas de movilidad urbana afectan el territorio, surge el principal objetivo de esta tesis: Repensar el espacio urbano que ocupan aquellas infraestructuras, directamente relacionadas con el uso del automóvil en la ciudad, en un contexto futuro que no las incluye y las considera en un proceso de obsolescencia funcional inminente. Esta investigación, por tanto, pretende especular, debatir y mirar el futuro cercano de la ciudad de Santiago y abordar esta condición que se encuentra en desarrollo. Más precisamente, se enfoca en el estudio De la calle Miraflores, un importante eje en el centro histórico de Santiago, lugar donde se congregan la mayor cantidad de edificios de estacionamientos. Esta porción de ciudad se trabajará como un laboratorio urbano de exploraciones y reflexiones sobre la reversibilidad del inminente proceso de obsolescencia de dichas estructuras, en favor de su reutilización. The worldwide trend towards the decrease in the presence of the private automobile within historic centers has allowed us to question the excessive urban space that has been given to motorized traffic and how this has deteriorated. The imminent expulsion of the automobile from urban centers will trigger, on the one hand, a resignification and reappropriation of the pedestrian in the road space, and on the other hand, a process of functional obsolescence in infrastructures whose role was directly related to the presence of the automobile in the city: parking buildings. This condition opens up questions about the future of these structures; will they have to be demolished, make a clean slate and start from scratch in their urban space, assuming the economic and environmental cost that this means, or can they be rethought, reused and adapted to a new urban role as a support for new uses? In this context, and as a response to the scenarios posed by the contemporary city, where changes in the dynamics of living and urban mobility systems affect the territory, the main objective of this thesis arises: to rethink the urban space occupied by those infrastructures, directly related to the use of the automobile in the city, in a future context that does not include them and considers them in a process of imminent functional obsolescence. This research, therefore, aims to speculate, discuss and look at the near future of the city of Santiago and address this developing condition. More precisely, it focuses on the study of Miraflores Street, an important axis in the historic center of Santiago, where the largest number of parking buildings congregate. This portion of the city will be worked as an urban laboratory of explorations and reflections on the reversibility of the imminent process of obsolescence of these structures, in favor of their reuse.

MBArch - Màster Universitari en Estudis Avançats en Arquitectura-Barcelona: The Contemporary Project Analysing contemporary architectural methods of dealing with abandoned buildings, and architects can create common grounds in divided cities, in this thesis, the case of Beirut. Forgetting is not an act of erasing memories but transforming them into new ones by removing the emotional responses that are produced by our recollection of these memories. Like memories in our brains, buildings that have been recognized as sites of traumatic events are held back in an endless cycle of recollection and repression of memories. Opposed to destruction and demolition, this thesis explores the historic, material, and structural value of preservation in sites of decay. Showing that neglected buildings can be a part of the urban life when rehabilitated and redesigned to serve the community well, to create a better social life for the residents where opportunities are created, social cohesion can be facilitated.

MBArch - Màster Universitari en Estudis Avançats en Arquitectura-Barcelona: The Contemporary Project Sound exists in architecture and architecture exists in sound. The objective of this research is to demonstrate the relationship between sound and space, specifically their mutual effect on bringing physical alterations to interiors as well as modifications in music. A process will be explained in which buildings and sound interact, inspiring new ideas, creating creative structures, and acting as both factors and subjects in their continuos interaction. The fundamentals of architectural acoustics will be explained in theory and through a study of various types of buildings with their purpose of musical experience, through formal auditoriums and concert halls to reused industrial buildings and ephemeral music pavilions. The conducted research results in a design proposal focused on Berlin's industrial ruins, which combines various spaces for musical experience, at the same time protecting Berlin's cultural vibrancy and emphasizing the importance of music venues in a city.

The city of Lima suffers from an extreme lack of public space, an essential part of any city and key to its citizens’ wellbeing. The neighbourhood of Surquillo Cercado is a particularly striking case, with the highest population density in the city and almost no green area. The commercially rich and market filled neighbourhood also suffers from overbuilding, overcrowding, crime, inequality and hard borders, as a consequence of the lack of public space and other factors. In spite of being located in the high earning city centre, Surquillo Cercado is heavily segregated from its rich neighbours and at a disadvantage economically and socially, creating a cluster of inequality. Public space is the starting point for regenerating this disadvantaged area. The public space urban regeneration strategies of the superblocks and the inner patios offer solutions for consolidated cities to create public space within the existing urban fabric in order to regenerate areas. We argue that these strategies are appropriate for an overbuilt and overcrowded South American neighbourhood such as Surquillo Cercado. The regeneration proposal has three parts: a conceptual part that highlights the theoretical importance of public space, a research strategy that analyses Surquillo Cercado and its existing public space, and an urban planning and urban design plan that applies the superblocks and inner patios to the area in different scales.

Several urban revitalization projects have been carried out in different parts of Korea to enhance the neighborhood quality of life. Most of these revitalization and/ or urban regeneration projects were concentrated into housing and residential projects or costly urban spaces while trying to copycat Seoul. The negative impact of COVID-19 during the past two years caused many local businesses to shut down beside the psychological effect of the lockdown and the massive loss of lives, not only in Korea but all over the world. My research will focus on the following four aspects: • Local economy: Post-COVID-19 economic re-boot • Sustainability: Enhance quality of life and environment • Social interaction: Identifying commercial architecture social impact on customers, and local communities • Architectural identity: A symbiosis between form and function For this purpose, I am researching commercial architecture in Korea as a catalyst element between people and their built environment by answering the following question: How postCOVID-19 commercial architecture can improve quality of life, local economy, and bring a new architectural experience to people in Ulsan City center while having a very specific architectural identity? It is not about replicating Korean traditional architecture; rather, it is about developing a distinct character for Ulsan's commercial architecture.

Aquest projecte planteja reubicar diferents equipaments ja existents, que es troben en mal estat de conservació i localitzacions temporals, en un nou edifici públic per al poble de Castelldefels. Aquest nou edifici serà un element transitori entre un bosc lineal, ja existent, i el front marítim construït en els anys 50. Continuant amb la modulació de les construccions existents, es planteja aquest nou equipament modular, amb elements prefabricats i amb la capacitat d'ajustar-se a futures necessitats. Este proyecto plantea reubicar distintos equipamientos ya existentes, que se hallan en mal estado de conservación y localizaciones temporales, en un nuevo edificio público para el pueblo de Castelldefels. Este nuevo edificio será un elemento transitorio entre un bosque lineal, ya existente, y el frente marítimo construido en los años 50. Continuando con la modulación de las construcciones existentes, se plantea este nuevo equipamiento modular, con elementos prefabricados y con la capacidad de ajustarse a futuras necesidades. This project proposes to relocate different existing facilities, which are in poor condition and temporary locations, into a new public building for the town of Castelldefels. This new building will be a transitory element between a linear forest, already existing, and the seafront built in the 50s. Continuing with the modulation of the existing constructions, this new modular equipment is proposed, with prefabricated elements, with the ability to adjust to future needs.

El projecte és “la peça que falta, és gran i diferent”, dialoga amb les traces existents i amb el gest urbà d’enllaç dels dos eixos més important de la ciutat, el carrer peatonal de la catedral i la rambla verda del barri de les roses. Amb la voluntat d’aprofitar la nova situació estratègica després del projecte de soterrament, la nova connectivitat amb Barcelona a través de la xarxa pública de metro, Tram i tren i tractant d’oferir un programa que dinamitzi el centre del municipi, el projecte situa la nova Facultat d’Arquitectura, Arts i Disseny a Sant Feliu de Llobregat. El lloc escollit té un desnivell de cota de 6.5m, que de manera escalonada mor en un mur a les vies. La proposta té la voluntat de solucionar la diferència de cota de manera arquitectònica i urbana aprofitant el projecte de soterrament de les vies del tren. Situa un edifici de quatre nivells, donant un front més urbà de pb+3 al nou eix i de pb+2 a la rambla superior. Generant un front més urbà a l’escala del nou corredor verd i un front més amable a una rambla de barri. L’edifici tracta de millorar les condicions urbanes dels equipaments existents al lloc, obrint-se a les piscines i abraçant el complex esportiu. La nova plaça obre un accés a les piscines i encara la façana d’aquestes amb el nou edifici. El projecte abraça El Complex Esportiu, aquesta façana urbana es prolonga en planta baixa amb un volum porxat que acull programes nous, dinamitzant tot un tram actualment sense activitat. El porxo li dona un basament més permeable al volum opac del complex millorant el contacte de l’arquitectura amb l’espai públic. La peça s’entén com quatre grans lloses lleugeres de formigó que reposen al lloc, la façana de fusta enretirada deixa veure els pilars de formigó circulars que sustenten els grans voladissos de les lloses. Aquest voladís perimetral serveix de protecció solar i aporta al conjunt arquitectònic una linealitat i lleugeresa que es contraposa amb els volums opacs dels edificis existents. El proyecto es “la pieza que falta, es grande y diferente”, dialoga con las trazas existentes y con el gesto urbano de enlace de los dos ejes más importante de la ciudad, la calle peatonal de la catedral y la rambla verde del barrio de las rosas. Con la voluntad de aprovechar la nueva situación estratégica después del proyecto de soterramiento, la nueva conectividad con Barcelona a través de la red pública de metro, Tramo y tren y tratante de ofrecer un programa que dinamice el centro del municipio, el proyecto sitúa la nueva Facultad de Arquitectura, Artes y Diseño en Sant Feliu de Llobregat. El lugar escogido tiene un desnivel de cota de 6.5m, que de manera escalonada muere en un muro a las vías. La propuesta tiene la voluntad de solucionar la diferencia de cota de manera arquitectónica y urbana aprovechando el proyecto de soterramiento de las vías del tren. Sitúa un edificio de cuatro niveles, dando un frente más urbano de pb+3 al nuevo eje y de pb+2 en la rambla superior. Generando un frente más urbano en la escala del nuevo corredor verde y un frente más amable en una rambla de barrio. El edificio trata de mejorar las condiciones urbanas de las equipaciones existentes al lugar, abriéndose a las piscinas y abrazando el complejo deportivo. La nueva plaza abre un acceso a las piscinas y encara la fachada de estas con el nuevo edificio. El proyecto abraza El Complejo Deportivo, esta fachada urbana se prolonga en planta baja con un volumen porchado que acoge programas nuevos, dinamizando todo un tramo actualmente sin actividad. La pieza se entiende como cuatro grandes losas ligeras de hormigón que reposan al lugar, la fachada de madera retirada deja ver los pilares de hormigón circulares que sustentan los grandes voladizos de las losas. Este voladizo perimetral sirve de protección solar y aporta al conjunto arquitectónico una linealidad y ligereza que se contrapone con los volúmenes opacos de los edificios existentes. The project is "the missing piece, it is large and different" and it dialogues with the existing traces and the urban gesture of linking the two most important axes of the city, the pedestrian street of the cathedral and the green branch of the roses neighborhood. With the will to take advantage of the new strategic situation after the underground project, the new connectivity with Barcelona through the public network of subway, Tram and Train and trying to offer a program that will stimulate the centre of the municipality, the project places the new Faculty of Architecture, Arts and Design in Sant Feliu de Llobregat. The chosen site has a height gradient of 6.5m, which staggeredly dies in a wall on the tracks. The proposal has the will to resolve the difference in terms of architecture and urbanity by taking advantage of the project to underground the railway tracks. It is a four-level building, giving a more urban front from pb+3 to the new axis and pb+2 to the upper branch. Generating a more urban front on the staircase of the new green corridor and a nicer front on a neighborhood bouquet. The building seeks to improve the urban conditions of existing equipment on the site, opening up to the pools and embracing the sports complex. The new square opens access to the pools and still the façade of these with the new building. The project embraces The Sports Complex, this urban façade extends on the ground floor with a porch volume hosting new programs, endorsing an entire stretch currently unactivityless. The piece is understood as four large light concrete slabs that stand on the site, the retracted wooden façade shows the circular concrete pillars that support the large slabs. This perimeter flyby serves as solar protection and gives the architectural ensemble a linearity and lightness that contrasts with the opaque volumes of existing buildings.

Nos encontramos en el Pirineo Catalán, una zona con mucho potencial del Pallars Sobirá. En este proyecto de estudio nos centraremos en el municipio de Sort, que descansa entre el Valle de Assua y el río Noguera Pallaresa. En todas las fases del análisis y diseño siempre se ha intentado analizar desde tres miradas diferentes; la naturaleza (la cima), los recorridos (el camino) y por último, la arquitectura (la memoria del lugar). Tras analizar todas las capas del sitio, se identifican tres tejidos urbanos muy diferenciados. El primero tejido es el casco antiguo de Sort, en forma de villa cerrada debido al perímetro amurallado del casco antiguo. En el siguiente tejido refleja un ‘boom’ turístico de los años 70, lo cual provocó una construcción masiva de bloques grandes cerca del casco antiguo. Este hecho dejó encasillado al núcleo histórico y marcó un eje longitudinal muy marcado dominado por la carretera C-13. Por último, el aumento del turismo de montaña provocó la construcción de segundas residencias apartadas en el pueblo, sin tener relación con la traza urbana. El proyecto trabajará el eje transversal del pueblo, descongestionando así el eje longitudinal tan explotado por los coches y cosiendo los diferentes tejidos de Sort. A través del camino se consigue un hilo conductor que teje todo el pueblo, desde el punto más alto, el castillo de Sort, hasta el punto más bajo, el río, recorriendo todos los tejidos urbanos propios del lugar. El lugar donde se asentará el proyecto se encuentra en la transición entre lo urbano y la naturaleza. Nos situamos justo en el final del casco antiguo, cerca de una plaza existente que quedó desdibujada y debajo del castillo. El proyecto trata de generar un punto clave de encuentro, el único centro cívico del pueblo. El edificio se entiende como una pieza que abraza al edificio existente donde se interviene, con el jardín central como elemento de unión.

Utilitzar l'arquitectura per tornar a cosir la història amb el lloc, enllaçar el poble i trencar els límits a través de la creació d'experiències albergades en aquest nou centre de relació social. La proposta emmena la partida de les contraposicions, el dubte de la quasi inexistent frontera entre oposats i l’harmonia del contrapunt gràcies al respecte. Es busca l'harmonia entre els diferents aspectes del projecte i és que, com s'anirà relatant, la proposta neix gràcies a un conjunt de tensions, de preguntes i respostes, de contrastos que ajuden a trobar la simplicitat de la complexitat. Un edifici simple en aparença, però complex d’intensions, agermana i esdevé una nova porta al nucli antic de la vila agramuntina sempre des del respecte per l'existent, per la història i la memòria de la població. Utilizar la arquitectura para volver a coser la historia con el lugar, enlazar el pueblo y romper los límites a través de la creación de experiencias albergadas en este nuevo centro de relación social. La propuesta activa la partida de las contraposiciones, la duda de la casi inexistente frontera entre opuestos y la armonía del contrapunto gracias al respeto. Se busca la armonía entre los diferentes aspectos del proyecto y es que, como se irá relatando, la propuesta nace gracias a un conjunto de tensiones, de preguntas y respuestas, de contrastes que ayudan a encontrar la simplicidad de la complejidad. Un edificio simple en apariencia, pero complejo en intenciones, une y acontece una nueva puerta al núcleo antiguo de la villa agramuntina siempre desde el respeto por el existente, por la historia y la memoria de la población. Use the architecture to re-sew history with the site, link the village and break the boundaries through the creation of experiences hosted in this new center of social relationship. The proposal activates the departure of the oppositions, the doubt of the almost non-existent border between the opposing sides and the harmony of the counterpoint. It seeks harmony between the different aspects of the project and that is that, as it will be reported, the proposal is born out of a set of tensions, questions and answers, of contrasts that help to find the simplicity of complexity. A simple building in appearance, but complex of intentions, which becomes a new door to the old core of the village, always from respect for the existing one, for the history and memory of the population.

La propuesta pretende favorecer el tránsito de peatones a través de un entorno agradable mejorando una de las puertas de entrada más utilizada y recorrida por los visitantes de la ciudad. Es necesario mejorar todo este sector deprimido para fomentar el asentamiento de población y cambiar radicalmente su imagen creando una zona de interés para vecinos y visitantes se puede revalorizar la zona, atrayendo población e iniciativas comerciales que devuelvan vida al lugar. Las entradas a las ciudades son la primera impresión que se llevan los visitantes además de ser lugares con mucho tránsito turístico y suelen ser espacios muy cuidados. Se propone regenerar todo el sector situado en torno a la calle de San Agustín para que constituya un verdadero nexo de unión entre las dos áreas catalogadas y que sirva de transición entre el espacio urbano de la ciudad y el espacio natural de las márgenes del río Duero a través de una visión unitaria de la calle.

El proyecto se sitúa al final de la calle Progres en Hospitalet de Llobregat donde actualmente encontramos una barrera física que desfavorece a la vida cotidiana y interacción social del barrio de Collblanc y La Torrassa, la intervención busca conectar vertical y horizontalmente un espacio urbano privatizado para volver a tejer los lazos del Distrito II con la naturaleza y la historia.

Intervenció al nucli de la Vila de Cambrils. Es proposa un centre cultural recuperant la muralla medieval i altres preexstències del nucli.
