Researchers from the University of Birmingham, UK, presented a method for the removal of alpha-emitting actinicides neptunium (V) generated by the nuclear fuel cycle. Np(V) can be removed by using Citrobacter sp. and Shewanella putrefaciens microorganisms together.

Abstract

A possibility of release of an extracellular c-type cytochrome by Geobacter sulfurreducens is discussed. Results indicate that 9.6-kDa cytochrome is not an effective shuttle between G. sulfurreducens and Fe(III) oxide.

Abstract

Resting cells of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ATCC 29577 were employed to reduce soluble Pd2+ to elemental, cell-bound palladium supported by pyruvate, formate of H2 as the electron donor without biochemical cofactors. The employment of hydrogen as the electron donor suggests the possible use of hydrogenase with cytochrome c activity in Pd reduction, in accordance with the periplasmic localization of many hydrogenases in the sulfate-reducing bacteria and their inhibition in Cu2+.

16. Effect of complexing agents on reduction of Cr(VI) by <TOGGLE>Desulfovibrio vulgaris</TOGGLE> ATCC 29579

Abstract

The reduction of Cr(VI) at the expense of molecular hydrogen was studied using resting cells of Desulfovibrio vulgaris ATCC 29579 in anaerobic resting cell suspensions in MOPS buffer. Bioreduction occurred only in the presence of ligands or chelating agents (CO32−, citrate, NTA, EDTA, DTPA). The stimulatory effect of these ligands on the rate of Cr(VI) reduction was correlated (r = 0.988) with the strength of the ligand/chelate complex of Cr(III). The data are examined with respect to likely solution and redox equilibria in the ionic matrix of the carrier solution, and with respect to the potential for bioremediation of Cr(VI). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
