Abstract

The effect of toroidal rotation on both turbulent and neoclassical transport of tungsten (W) in tokamaks is investigated using the flux-driven, global, nonlinear 5D gyrokinetic code GYSELA. Nonlinear simulations are carried out with different levels of momentum injection that drive W to the supersonic regime, while the toroidal velocity of the main ions remains in the subsonic regime. The numerical simulations demonstrate that toroidal rotation induces centrifugal forces that cause W to accumulate in the outboard region, generating an in-out poloidal asymmetry. This asymmetry enhances neoclassical inward convection, which can lead to central accumulation of W in cases of strong plasma rotation. The core accumulation of W is mainly driven by inward neoclassical convection. However, as momentum injection continues, roto-diffusion, proportional to the radial gradient of the toroidal velocity, becomes significant and generate outward turbulent flux in the case of ion temperature gradient (ITG) turbulence. Abstract

Charged particle velocity-space diffusion in a prescribed one-dimensional turbulent electric field is investigated through numerical trajectories in phase-space and compared against quasi-linear theory (QL), including resonance broadening (RB). A Gaussian spectrum electric field of variable amplitude E is studied in conjunction with two plasma dispersion relations, namely, the Langmuir and ion-acoustic dispersion. A first parameter scan shows that RB effects become significant for a Kubo number K of a few percent. A Kubo number scan shows that diffusion increases as a power law of D∝K3∝E3/2 for large Kubo numbers. Moreover, at large Kubo numbers, transport processes include significant diffusion measured at velocities much higher than the resonant region, where QL and RB predict negligible diffusion. For times much larger than the trapped particle flight time τb and the autocorrelation time τ0, the velocity distribution departs from a Gaussian. Nevertheless, measurements show that the variance increases linearly in time, with a Hurst parameter of H∼0.5, where the diffusion scales as K5/2∝E5/4 and K3/2∝E3/4 for small and large Kubo number, respectively.

Abstract

Invasive candidiasis remains one of the most prevalent systemic mycoses, and several studies have documented the presence of mixed yeast (MY) infections. Here, we describe the epidemiology, clinical, and microbiological characteristics of MY infections causing invasive candidiasis in a multicenter prospective study. Thirty-four centers from 14 countries participated. Samples were collected in each center between April to September 2018, and they were sent to a reference center to confirm identification by sequencing methods and to perform antifungal susceptibility testing, according to the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST). A total of 6895 yeast cultures were identified and MY occurred in 150 cases (2.2%). Europe accounted for the highest number of centers, with an overall MY rate of 4.2% (118 out of 2840 yeast cultures). Of 122 MY cases, the most frequent combinations were Candida albicans/C. glabrata (42, 34.4%), C. albicans/C. parapsilosis (17, 14%), and C. glabrata/C. tropicalis (8, 6.5%). All Candida isolates were susceptible to amphotericin B, 6.4% were fluconazole-resistant, and two isolates (1.6%) were echinocandin-resistant. Accurate identification of the species involved in MY infections is essential to guide treatment decisions.

28. Anxiety and Self-Esteem as Mediators of the Relation between Family Communication and Indecisiveness in Adolescence

Abstract

In this study, we explored the unique and common contributions of anxiety, self-esteem, and family communication on indecisiveness among adolescents. Three hundred and fifty pupils from 13 to 16 years of age completed self-report measures on indecisiveness, quality of family communication, trait anxiety, and self-esteem. The findings in this study showed that students' indecisiveness is predicted by family communication mediated by anxiety and self-esteem. These results have important implications for practice as it stresses the importance of anxiety and self-esteem. Nevertheless, the counselors could also focus on enhancing relationship-building skills by introducing the adolescents' career formation as an adolescent-parent joint project.

30. New Insight into the genotype-phenotype correlation of PTH1Rvariants and primary failure of tooth eruption on an Italian Cohort

Abstract

Primary failure of tooth eruption (PFE) is an autosomal dominant disease with penetrance defect. While the clinical phenotype is relatively well-defined since the 70 s of the last centuries, much more need to be clarified about the genetic causes of this condition. In our previous paper we established clinical criteria to better identify PFE patients carrying PTH1Rgene variants. We examined a new cohort of 32 patients, including one or more relatives for 7 patients (43 cases in total), referred to have PFE and recruited from our Hospital and from external outpatients. Sequencing analysis of the PTH1Rcoding sequence in this cohort of patients revealed 9 different variants, 4 exonic and 5 intronic. Through in silico prediction tools and databases, 3 of them (2 exonic and 1 in a splicing site) had been considered potentially involved in the PFE phenotype. Sequencing of cDNA was unsuccessfully attempted due to the low levels of PTH1Rexpression in the analysed tissues. The yield of the genetic test increases when the clinical selection of the patients with dental eruption failure is well-characterized. Dental eruption failure with pure clinical findings of PFE associated with familial history revealed variants in PTH1Rgene, offering a diagnostic test for the family. Characterization of novel variants in the most relevant responsible gene of the PFE could bring to a more accurate diagnosis and therapeutic approach in the future and to a deeper comprehension of the disease.

41. The Development of Research Capabilities of Key Puerto Rico Professionals in Vocational-Technical Education.

Abstract

Summarized are the results of efforts exerted by the Puerto Rico Research Coordinating Unit to expand the Puerto Rico research capability in vocational education by: (1) identifying relevant legislation and its historical antecedents, (2) identifying the administrative structure responsible for conducting research in occupational education, (3) exploring and identifying resources and materials available for research and development, (4) developing skills fundamental in identifying research problems, and (5) developing competencies in proposal writing. A total of twenty educational professionals in key leadership positions participated in the 3-component project which includes: a research development seminar, tutorial sessions, and evaluations. Findings indicate that the project's success can be attributed largely to the quality of the administrative personnel, intensive planning, and balanced coordination. (SN)

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical outcomes of 4 surgical techniques in patients with recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation, glenoid bone loss (GBL) <15% and Instability Severity Index (ISI) score >3. A retrospective multicenter study was conducted on 226 patients who underwent 1 of 4 different techniques (Bankart plus arthroscopic subscapularis augmentation (ASA), Bankart plus remplissage, Latarjet, Arthro-Latarjet). The inclusion criteria were: recurrent dislocation, GBL <15%, and ISI score >3. The exclusion criteria were: GBL >15%, voluntary instability, multidirectional instability, preexisting osteoarthritis, throwing athletes' first dislocation, and ISI score<3. Follow-up ranged from 24 months to 6 years. Hyperlaxity was clinically evaluated according to Neer and Coudane–Walch tests. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the Rowe score and the Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index (WOSI) for each technique. Before surgery, all patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scanning. The Pico area method was used to assess the percentage of GBL. The operations were performed by 10 experienced surgeons; the functional outcomes were evaluated by 2 independent observers. A total of 226 patients who met the inclusion criteria were included in the present series. A total of 89.2% of patients in the ASA group reported an excellent Rowe score at the final follow-up, and their scores on the WOSI scale, improved from 838 to 235 points. A total of 79.9% of patients in remplissage (R) group reported an excellent Rowe score at the final follow-up, and their scores on the WOSI scale improved from 1146 to 465 points. A total of 98.5% of patients in the Latarjet (L) group reported an excellent Rowe score at the final follow-up, and their scores on the WOSI scale improved from 1456 to 319 points. A total of 81.6% of patients in the Arthro-Latarjet (AL) group reported an excellent Rowe score at the final follow-up, and their scores on the WOSI scale improved from 1250 to 221 points. The recurrence rates were as follows: ASA group (7%), remplissage group (6.1%), L group (1.5%), Arthro-Latarjet group (0%). Patients in the open L group had 15.5% (10/66) more complications. The use of ASA and remplissage to augment the Bankart repair have been demonstrated to be effective for restoring joint stability, yielding good clinical outcomes similar to the L procedure in patients affected by recurrent anterior dislocation with GBL <15% and an ISI score score >3. Soft tissues augmentations of the Bankart repair have been demonstrated to be effective for addressing anterior soft tissue deficiency dysfunction and critical Hill–Sachs lesions. Abstract

New dynamics of local development have shed the light on the possible revitalization of European rural and mountain areas. A key element in these dynamics is the international migration fluxes that have these areas as new destinations. Newcomers' arrivals to rural and mountain areas represent both an opportunity and a challenge. They can fill in the gaps in local job markets left by the out-migration of young and the depopulation of remaining locals, but migrants' integration can present hurdles. Within the complex composition of the integration process, this research analyses the economic aspects related to local entrepreneurs' behaviours, migrant self-entrepreneurship, the role of the social economy and its effects on local communities. This paper presents results from secondary sources produced by the work of ten research teams – which collaborate on a European project MATILDE Horizon 2020 – based in as many European countries. The consortium agreed on a qualitative research approach, the use of semi-structured interviews, focus groups and participatory observation for data collection, and the "Foundational Economy" as the principal theoretical framework. Then, our research team carried out data extraction and comparison. Results show the diverse features of economic integration, encompassing local economic actors' solutions, reactions in the communities, the role of the social economy and migrant entrepreneurship. • A broader perspective on the examination of dynamic of international migrants' economic integration. • Data and information from 14 European regions in 10 countries. • Findings about the role of local economic agents in favour migrants' economic integration to revitalize rural areas. • Importance of migrants' self-entrepreneurship. • The key role of social economy in migrants' economic integration in rural areas.
