Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) appear to be one of the possible solutions for limiting greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector. Hence, the transport sector must be redesigned to allow the installation of EV charging stations powered by renewable energy from photovoltaic (PV) panels. Described as a new innovation, the social acceptability of these PV-powered charging stations should be studied alongside the technical study aiming at improving the project as well as increasing public knowledge. The goal of this study is to determine whether this innovative energy system is socially accepted or not and to analyze the concept limitations from a public point of view. The PV-powered charging station is a system composed mainly of PV sources, stationary storage, and public grid connection as back-up power. The intelligent controller is able to manage the system for EVs charging as well as the new associated services such as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) that can be integrated. The social acceptability revealed a very good prospect for electromobility coupled with renewable energies. Regarding the social acceptance the study shows that the majority of those polled are eager to use PV-powered charging stations and the new associated services V2G and V2H; however, this acceptance is conditional on a number of users' needs and constraints.

Abstract

The contribution of electric vehicles (EVs) in reducing greenhouse gas emissions depends on the energetic mix of the public grid. On the other hand, the public grid may become vulnerable when EVs number drastically increase, as predicted in many worldwide scenarios. Considering several scenarios, i.e., passenger EVs number, charging power values, EV consumption, and average daily urban/peri-urban trip of 20 - 60 km, and based on French power grid data, this paper investigates the power grid issues regarding the EVs charging. The results show that the total required energy for EVs charging can be assumed by the grid while the total required power may represent an issue. In order to overcome this issue, a photovoltaic (PV) powered EV charging station, including stationary storage and public grid connection as power source backups, is introduced. Based on a classic real time power management (rule-based algorithm), three case studies are analyzed. The simulation tests show that for an average daily urban/peri-urban trip of 20 - 40 km and a daily EV charging based on a slow charging terminal associated with PV-powered charging station may bring large advantage for the public grid as well for the environmental footprint.

Abstract

The overlapping method is a very convenient method to connect nonconforming meshes. It has been already developed in 2-D and in 3-D with hexahedron meshes. In this paper, we propose an extension to 3-D tetrahedron meshes. This extension is not obvious because the elements do not overlap on hedrahedra anymore but on polyhedra. In this paper, we propose a method to overcome that issue. First, the overlapping method is presented and the implementation in a finite-element method calculation code as well. Then, the overlapping method is tested successfully on two examples. Index Terms--Electromagnetism, finite-element methods (FEMs), mesh generation, overlapping elements.

Abstract

This paper deals with easy-to-implement control strategies when a seven-phase axial flux permanent magnet machine supplied by a seven-leg voltage source inverter is in fault operation mode. Using a vectorial multimachine description, a seven-phase machine presenting a heightened ability to be controlled with one or two open-circuited phases has been designed. The machine is first presented, and experimental results are provided when one or two phases are open circuited. Based on a vectorial approach, new current references are calculated to avoid high-torque ripples. Index Terms--Fault tolerance, multiphase synchronous machine, reliability, torque ripple.

Abstract

In this paper, a 7-phase axial-flux double-rotor permanent magnet synchronous machine is studied using analytical and finite element methods. This type of machine shows a higher sensitivity to the inductance harmonics and electromotive force (emf) compared with the 3-phase machines. So, the conventional analytical modeling method, in which only the first harmonic is taken into account, leads to significant errors in the determination of the control parameters, e.g., the frequency of pulse width modulation voltage source inverter. A multimachine model explains the reasons for this sensitivity and a more sophisticated analytical method is used. Results are compared with those obtained by the 3-D FEM. Abstract

The intermittent and highly variable nature of photovoltaic (PV) sources is always the major obstacle to the growth of their deployment. Research work is increasingly demonstrating that PV generation should not only be maximized but also flexible based on the system requirements. This article presents a simple and flexible PV control mechanism, which can seamlessly switch between maximum power point tracking mode and power limiting mode. It can be integrated into a DC microgrid for efficient energy management. The proposed mechanism has two configurations that respectively converge to a lower and a higher PV panel voltage to perform PV shedding. The experimental validation carried out in this study shows that this control can effectively adjust the PV generation despite some physical constraints. The limitations of the control mechanism and the energy efficiency are also analyzed. It can be concluded that each configuration can be particularly useful depending on the different application scenarios.
