Rapid progress in precision nanofabrication and atomic design over the past 50 years has ushered in a succession of transformative eras for molding the generation and flow of light. The use of nanoscale and atomic features to design light sources and optical elements-encapsulated by the term nanophotonics-has led to new fundamental science and innovative technologies across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, with substantial emphasis on the microwave to visible regimes. In this review, we pay special attention to the impact and potential of nanophotonics in a relatively exotic yet technologically disruptive regime: high-energy particles such as X-ray photons and free electrons-where nanostructures and atomic design open the doors to unprecedented technologies in quantum science and versatile X-ray sources and optics. As the practical generation of X-rays is intrinsically linked to the existence of energetic free or quasi-free-electrons, our review will also capture related phenomena and technologies that combine free electrons with nanophotonics, including free-electron-driven nanophotonics at other photon energies. In particular, we delve into the demonstration and study of quantum recoil in the X-ray regime, the study of nanomaterial design and free-electron wave shaping as means to enhance and control X-ray radiation, examine the free-electron generation enabled by nanophotonics, and analyze the high-harmonic generation by quasi-free electrons. We also discuss applications of quantum nanophotonics for X-rays and free electrons, including nanostructure waveguides for X-rays, photon pair enhanced X-ray imaging, mirrors, and lenses for X-rays, among others.

A readout system based on the Timepix4 ASIC, is being developed for photon science. The TEMPUS detector can be operated in two distinct modes: a photon counting mode, which allows for conventional full-frame readout at rates up to 40 kfps; and an event-driven time-stamping mode, which allows excellent time resolution in the nanosecond regime in measurements with moderate X-ray flux. In this paper, we introduce the initial prototype, a single-chip system, and present the first results obtained at PETRA III and ESRF., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

M\"ossbauer nuclei constitute exceptionally clean quantum-optical systems with transitions in the hard x-ray energy range, which, placed in x-ray waveguides, are a uniquely capable platform to study collective radiative effects in waveguide quantum electrodynamics (QED). In this work, we design and demonstrate the so-far unexplored nuclear resonant x-ray propagation in thin-film waveguides coupled in forward incidence, resolving excitation and collective evolution of M\"ossbauer nuclei in both time and position. To describe the effects of geometry on propagation and collective evolution, we present a unifying theoretical model. Our findings not only open up a new design space for experiments in nuclear resonant scattering and nuclear quantum optics, but also demonstrate a nanometer-sized x-ray source with extreme temporal and spatial coherence. %which previously were limited to either unstructured foil samples or translation-invariant reflectivity and diffraction configurations. This gives access to a new regime of waveguide QED with hard x-rays and furthermore paves a new route to coherent spectro-microscopic investigations at the nanoscale.

X-ray near field holography has proven to be a powerful 2D and 3D imaging technique with applications ranging from biomedical research to material sciences. To reconstruct meaningful and quantitative images from the measurement intensities, however, it relies on computational phase retrieval which in many cases assumes the phase-shift and attenuation coefficient of the sample to be proportional. Here, we demonstrate an efficient phase retrieval algorithm that does not rely on this homogeneous-object assumption and is a generalization of the well-established contrast-transfer-function (CTF) approach. We then investigate its stability and present an experimental study comparing the proposed algorithm with established methods. The algorithm shows superior reconstruction quality compared to the established CTF-based method at similar computational cost. Our analysis provides a deeper fundamental understanding of the homogeneous object assumption and the proposed algorithm will help improve the image quality for near-field holography in biomedical applications

Thin-film nanostructures with embedded M\"ossbauer nuclei have been successfully used for x-ray quantum optical applications with hard x-rays coupling in grazing incidence. Here we address theoretically a new geometry, in which hard x-rays are coupled in forward incidence (front coupling), setting the stage for waveguide QED with nuclear x-ray resonances. We present in a self-contained manner a general model based on the Green's function formalism of the field-nucleus interaction in one dimensional waveguides, and show that it combines aspects of both nuclear forward scattering, visible as dynamical beating in the spatio-temporal response, and the resonance structure from grazing incidence, visible in the spectrum of guided modes. The interference of multiple modes is shown to play an important role, resulting in beats with wavelengths on the order of tens of microns, on the scale of practical photolithography. This allows for the design of special sample geometries to explore the resonant response or micro-striped waveguides, opening a new toolbox of geometrical design for hard X-ray quantum optics., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures

Based on phase retrieval, lensless coherent imaging and in particular holography offers quantitative phase and amplitude images. This is of particular importance for spectral ranges where suitable lenses are challenging, such as for hard x-rays. Here, we propose a phase retrieval approach for inline x-ray holography based on Tikhonov regularization applied to the full nonlinear forward model of image formation. The approach can be seen as a nonlinear generalization of the well-established contrast-transfer-function (CTF) reconstruction method. While similar methods have been proposed before, the current work achieves nonlinear, constrained phase retrieval at competitive computation times. We thus enable high-throughput imaging of optically strong objects beyond the scope of CTF. Using different examples of inline holograms obtained from illumination by a x-ray waveguide-source, we demonstrate superior image quality even for samples which do not obey the assumption of a weakly varying phase. Since the presented approach does not rely on linearization, we expect it to be well suited also for other probes such as visible light or electrons, which often exhibit strong phase interaction.
