Abstract

The streamer formation in a point-to-plane gap filled with atmospheric-pressure air has been experimentally studied using a streak camera and a four-channel intensified charge-coupled device camera with simultaneously recording waveforms of voltage and discharge current pulses. A large diameter streamer was observed at various amplitudes of nanosecond voltage pulses. The instantaneous streamer velocity was measured using the streak camera. It was found that the streamer has a high velocity at the initial stage of development, but it rapidly decreases. The minimum streamer velocity corresponds to the maximum diameter. The streamer velocity increases again by an order of magnitude when it approaches the opposite electrode. It was found that the streamer velocity correlates with the value of a displacement current induced by its propagation. At the initial stage of the streamer development during subnanosecond breakdown, the displacement current can reach several kiloamperes; this is comparable to the conduction current after the breakdown. Abstract

In this paper, the generation of supershort avalanche electron beams (SAEBs) from the plasmas of nanosecond diffuse discharges in air and other gases at atmospheric pressure was investigated. It is shown that, in the mode of SAEB generation, the plasma in the discharge gap with an inhomogeneous electric field can be produced in a time no greater than 100 ps with the charged-particle density sufficient to force out the electric field from the discharge-gap region occupied by the dense plasma. It is demonstrated that decreasing the voltage pulsewidth in the discharge gap (to ~100-ps FWHM) reduces the optimum gap for SAEB generation. It is also found that the difference in electron path toward the foil center and the foil edge affects the SAEB current pulsewidth. For lower voltages across the gap (~25 kV), the SAEB pulsewidth at half maximum is ~200 ps. Index Terms--Avalanche electrons beam, nanosecond diffuse discharge, runaway electrons.

Abstract

This paper presents research data on cathodoluminescence, photoluminescence, and Cherenkov radiation at 200–800 nm excited in crystals with different refractive indices by a subnanosecond runaway electron beam and by KrCl excilamp radiation with a peak wavelength of 222 nm. The data include spectral and amplitude-time characteristics measured with a resolution of up to ∼100 ps for natural and synthetic diamonds of type IIa, sapphire, CsI, ZnS, CaF2, ZrO2, Ga2O3, CaCO3, CdS, and ZnSe. The research suggests that cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence should be accounted for in Cherenkov-type detectors of runaway electrons. The results can be useful for detecting high-energy electrons in tokamaks

Abstract

In this article we report on work where the formation of a spark in nanosecond high-voltage discharges was studied in nitrogen, nitrogen-methane mixtures, and air at increased pressures under the conditions of runaway electron generation. Voltage pulses of amplitude ∼90 and ∼250 kV were applied to a point-to-plane gap with a planar anode and a cathode of small curvature radius. Cathode spots appeared early in the discharge, within ∼200 ps of a corona discharge at high rate of rise of the voltage (∼5 × 1014 V/s) across centimeter point-to-plane gap spacing. The spark leader that bridged the point-to-plane gap propagated from the planar anode with cathode spots and a voltage pulse rise time of less than 1 ns. The discharge from diffuse clouds took the form of diffuse jets with increasing pulse repetition rate, thus achieving the accumulation effect in a repetitively pulsed discharge. Abstract

An innovative class of sources of spontaneous ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet radiation, the so-called excilamps, based on the nonequilibrum radiation of exciplex or excimer molecules, is described. The design and some technical characteristics of traditional excilamps excited by a dielectric barrier discharge are presented. The data concerning newly developed types of excilamps excited by runaway- electrons-preionized diffuse discharge both in single and pulse-periodic modes are given as well. Some novel applications of excilamps in photochemistry, the effect of ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet radiation on the physiological action of living organisms, photosynthesis, and growth of plants, and the use of excilamps for pre-sowing treatment of seeds are explained in detail.
