3. Experiences of place attachment and mental well-being in the context of neighbourhood regeneration : an interpretative phenomenological analysis

Abstract

Regeneration of the built environment is an important focus of policy across the European Union (EU) and at any one time, there are numerous projects being delivered across Member States. Studies of neighbourhoods and communities highlight the significant role of the physical environment in life and how the inhabitants of existing communities cope with the changes to their socio-spatial environment should be considered. Despite its pervasiveness, however, minimal research has explored the underlying processes involved with residents’ interpretation of changes brought about through neighbourhood regeneration. The current research sought to address this through the adoption of the philosophical position of critical realism and the utilisation of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Qualitative interviews were conducted with nine residents of the Pendleton area of Salford, a city in the North West of England, which is currently undergoing a long-term, £650m regeneration project. The interview schedule was developed according to Smith et al.’s (2009) guide for good interview practice in studies utilising IPA. To facilitate the exploration of mental well-being, characteristics of change process research (CPR) were also drawn upon: a methodology commonly used to explain how psychotherapy leads to change in clients. The findings provided greater insight into residents’ experiences of neighbourhood regeneration. Explored are the underlying processes involved in residents’ renegotiation of place attachments, as the area in which they live undergoes transformation. Three super-ordinate themes were identified: feelings of control; social and community relations; as well as understandings and definitions of place. The findings demonstrate the potential for regeneration to lead to adverse consequences for sense of belonging and mental well-being, which highlights the necessity for continued, in-depth research into the phenomenon. Existing government guidance for the implementation of regeneration is reflected on in light of this fresh insight. The limitations of the project and further research avenues are also discussed.

Abstract

Research shows that natural environments have a beneficial effect on cognition and mental health. However, there is limited understanding of what properties within environments are most beneficial. Research in this area is limited by a lack of standardised, open-source, rated image databases dedicated to natural scenes. In this study we will address this by having participants rate images from a database of 500 natural images on specific cognitive restoration properties (pleasantness, familiarity etc.) as well as approach-avoidance, arousal and valence. Physical characteristics of the images will also be reported. Participants will also provide demographic information to understand how individual differences might affect how people rate natural environments. The outcome of this will be a standardised database of rated images which are freely available to facilitate research in this area.

Abstract

This study explored the correlates of climate anxiety in a diverse range of national contexts. We analysed cross-sectional data gathered in 32 countries (N = 12,246). Our results show that climate anxiety is positively related to rate of exposure to information about climate change impacts, the amount of attention people pay to climate change information, and perceived descriptive norms about emotional responding to climate change. Climate anxiety was also positively linked to pro-environmental behaviours and negatively linked to mental wellbeing. Notably, climate anxiety had a significant inverse association with mental wellbeing in 31 out of 32 countries. In contrast, it had a significant association with pro-environmental behaviour in 24 countries, and with environmental activism in 12 countries. Our findings highlight contextual boundaries to engagement in environmental action as an antidote to climate anxiety, and the broad international significance of considering negative climate-related emotions as a plausible threat to wellbeing.

Abstract

We use the Capabilities Approach to understand the ways in which e-scooters, as transportation resources, provide qualities that contribute to the ability of the transport system to enable people to participate in society. Government-led trials have been taking place in the UK since autumn 2020, focused on the provision of sharing schemes and with the intention of creating an evidence base on usership and contextual issues. This paper draws from a mixed-methods study in Greater Manchester, combining online surveys, reference groups and qualitative interviews. The findings suggest that e-scooters have a potential role in expanding the reach and boosting the reliability and flexibility of the transport system. Their relationship with safety is complex. Road safety concerns and issues relating to sharing space present barriers. Conversely, in relation to personal safety, e-scooters provide an alternative to walking through areas in which people may otherwise feel unsafe. For some, e-scooters offer a more affordable alternative to public transport and ride-hailing, but the unpredictability of cost, stemming from the per-minute costing model, can pose challenges for others. The low level of exertion can distinguish e-scooters from other micromobility options and, whilst some might therefore question their value in health terms when compared with other active modes of transport, people with conditions that mean they need to carefully manage their energy expenditure can therefore find e-scooters useful. Abstract

Climate change threatens mental health via increasing exposure to the social and economic disruptions created by extreme weather and large-scale climatic events, as well as through the anxiety associated with recognising the existential threat posed by the climate crisis. Considering the growing levels of climate change awareness across the world, negative emotions like anxiety and worry about climate-related risks are a potentially pervasive conduit for the adverse impacts of climate change on mental health. In this study, we examined how negative climate-related emotions relate to sleep and mental health among a diverse non-representative sample of individuals recruited from 25 countries, as well as a Norwegian nationally-representative sample. Overall, we found that negative climate-related emotions are positively associated with insomnia symptoms and negatively related to self-rated mental health in most countries. Our findings suggest that climate-related psychological stressors are significantly linked with mental health in many countries and draw attention to the need for cross-disciplinary research aimed at achieving rigorous empirical assessments of the unique challenge posed to mental health by negative emotional responses to climate change.
